Chapter Eighty-Three: Life’s Journey
byChapter Eighty-Three: Life's Journey
Since their universities were in close proximity, Lu Nian and Qin Si would return home together during every winter and summer break.
Lu Yunhua and Gan Shu essentially treated Qin Si as their own son. Although Qin Si was initially reserved during his visits, over time, he became accustomed to their warm embrace.
One year, Lu Nian stayed back at school for summer courses, while Qin Si headed to a distant place for an internship. It was a rare occurrence in their synchronised journey, marking the first time they had been separated by such a distance.
Consequently, a daily routine of phone and video calls naturally unfolded.
After finishing her class, Lu Nian returned from the outside, the weather was sweltering, and despite the dormitory being just ten minutes away from the classroom, she was drenched in sweat.
"I'm going to take a shower," she said, placing her phone on the table and picking up her shower caddy before descending the stairs.
Unexpectedly, just a few minutes after Lu Nian had left, her phone vibrating on the table.
He Xueqiao glanced at the caller ID.
When Lu Nian returned, she put down her chips and said, "Your husband just called."
A burst of laughter filled the dormitory.
Lu Nian, who was used to such comments, checked and indeed it was Qin Si.
Although they hadn't graduated and were not officially married, those acquainted with her were practically all familiar with Qin Si, and their jesting knew no bounds.
They would unabashedly refer to him as "your husband" or "your man".
Initially, Lu Nian found it somewhat embarrassing, but over time, she grew accustomed to the teasing.
She returned Qin Si's call.
Qin Si had booked her a flight ticket back to Ancheng, scheduled to arrive slightly later than him, mentioning that he would pick her up at that time.
In fact, having not seen each other for quite a while, she wished to have a longer conversation with Qin Si.
However, witnessing her roommates eagerly eavesdropping, she could only shake her head in amusement and tell him, "I have something to take care of shortly, I'll call you again in the evening."
"Why aren't you continuing the call?" He Xueqiao was clearly unsatisfied.
"Can you guys tone it down a bit?" Lu Nian urged, "Don't use those nicknames in front of him."
She was absolutely certain that Qin Si, with his shy disposition, would turn a different hue if she used terms like "husband" or "my man" in his presence.
He Xueqiao remarked, "Isn't it just a matter of time?"
According to He Xueqiao, or rather the consensus among all her roommates based on their observations.
Qin Si truly loved her, and if Lu Nian didn't marry him, they suspected he would remain single forever. It would be a pity to let such a high-quality man remain single, hence after all the roundabouts, it was certain that Lu Nian would have to marry him.
And they stated this with full conviction.
Aside from these playful remarks, those who knew them well were aware of their deep affection for each other. After all, Qin Si had met Lu Nian's parents and received their approval. Considering their proximity and Qin Si's background…
Curious, He Xueqiao asked Lu Nian, "So, when you both go back, does he stay with you in your room?"
Lu Nian replied, "Absolutely not!"
Given that her parents, Lu Yunhua and Gan Shu, were in the house, Qin Si generally wouldn't stay over. If he did, he would occupy a separate room.
At the very least... when Lu Yunhua and Gan Shu are around, he would absolutely refrain from spending the night in her room, even visiting infrequently.
"Your family is getting a son-in-law without any effort," Lin Lan commented, "In the future, disputes over whose house to visit during the Lunar New Year and where to reside will be nonexistent."
He Xueqiao chimed in, "Where did he scoop him up from? I've realized that I quite fancy this type as well."
Where was he scooped up from?
Lu Nian pondered over this question,
"Picked up from the roadside?" She couldn't fully comprehend it herself.
She remembered feeling quite perplexed back then. Despite their first encounter, the way he looked at her seemed more akin to a long-awaited reunion, as if he had finally found her in the vast sea of humanity.
Like a star suddenly illuminating the vast dark night, or like a lifeline discovered by someone who had been drowning for a long time.
The young man had extraordinarily beautiful eyes, initially cold and indifferent, but when he gazed at her in that manner, she wondered, what girl wouldn't have her heart stirred?
However, having no previous connections, she was sure she did not know Qin Si at that time.
Could it indeed be the legendary love at first sight?
Although she was beautiful, Qin Si seemed not to be a person overly concerned with appearances, showing an aloofness to whether a woman was attractive or not. Having been together for so long, she was certain this couldn't be feigned.
So, what was the real reason?
She planned to inquire about this thoroughly when she returned home after the course concluded.
Qin Si's current company prospects were promising, and his university mentor couldn't stop praising him. Originally, he had not planned to pursue further studies after his undergraduate course, intending to enter the workforce directly, which frustrated his mentor to the extent of calling Lu Nian.
It was only after she threatened a breakup that Qin Si finally agreed to attend school obediently. Nonetheless, his part-time job now sufficiently covered his tuition fees, even providing a surplus to support both of them comfortably.
Regarding this aspect, Lu Nian was indifferent. On the other hand, he cared deeply, always eager to pamper her and buy her various items, while being indifferent to his own expenses. Consequently, Lu Nian was in charge of organizing his clothing and daily necessities, always keen on finding ways to make her boyfriend appear even more handsome.
Summer school finally came to an end, and Lu Nian returned to Ancheng.
As expected, Qin Si was already waiting for her at the airport.
Amidst the bustling crowd, knowing her boyfriend's shy nature, she merely held his hand, smiling warmly, as they headed home together.
Lu Yunhua and Gan Shu had prepared a lavish meal.
In the evening, after a refreshing bath, Lu Nian felt rejuvenated. Having not returned home and seen Qin Si for a long time, the thought of him brought a gentle tingling sensation in her heart. She texted him directly, "Want to come over?"
He replied, "Your parents are home."
Lu Nian retorted, "...It's not like we're having an affair!"
After all, Lu Yunhua and Gan Shu were well aware of their relationship.
"If you don't come, I have to visit my grandma tomorrow to check on her. I'm certain you won't accompany me," Lu Nian typed languidly. "When I return to my hometown, it is usually for at least half a month. If they insist on me staying this time, I might end up staying until the school reopens in September."
Qin Si, "..."
Lu Nian knew this tactic would be most effective on him.
She glanced outside; it seemed that Lu Yunhua and Gan Shu had already gone to bed, leaving the living room engulfed in darkness.
Soon, the gentle sound of the door opening echoed.
She buried her face in the pillow, her laughter muffled.
As expected, he's a bit of an introverted tease.
He appeared fresh and invigorated. Skilled at the act, Lu Nian sat on his lap, reaching up to ruffle his hair. The tips were slightly damp. She muttered, "You should dry your hair before bed, or it'll stand on end by morning."
His hair was of the type that was soft, feeling cool and silky to the touch, a real pleasure to caress.
"Shall I blow-dry it for you?" she proposed, suddenly feeling enthusiastic.
Unexpectedly, he caught her hand, the roots of his ears turning a bit red, "Nevermind."
"Why?"
"Don't you like it?"
Pressed, he admitted, "...It makes noise, too much noise."
Lu Nian blinked, "Afraid my parents might hear?"
Qin Si, "..."
Although he didn't respond, judging by his expression, that seemed to be the case.
Lu Nian's eyes curved with her smile, nearly failing to suppress her laughter.
She deliberately tilted her face up, attempting to peck his lips.
Having been apart for so long, he simply couldn't resist her teasing, responding with considerable passion.
"We might get caught, you know," she said, her gaze drifting upwards, feigning seriousness.
Yet, her actions completely contradicted her words.
Outside, in the pitch-black darkness, faint stars were visible. He held her loosely, kissing her intermittently, gentle and without urgency, purely an expression of affection, a constant desire to be close to her.
Suddenly, Lu Nian remembered something, "There's something I've always wanted to ask you."
He kissed her ear gently, his voice slightly husky and tinged with a lazy fatigue, "What is it?"
Lu Nian asked with a serious demeanor, "The first time we met, why did you seem so familiar with me? Did you know me beforehand?"
Qin Si, "..." His movements abruptly froze.
He didn't know how to articulate it.
Suddenly, he recalled his lengthy dream, which was also the beginning of such a dreamlike encounter.
It seemed that Lu Nian genuinely wanted to ask.
He didn't want to lie to her. In her presence, he was all too willing to share everything, as long as she wanted to know. Although at times it made him feel embarrassed and somewhat uneasy, in the end, he would always disclose it.
Therefore,
"Where have you seen me before?" she asked once more.
"In a dream," he finally admitted.
He didn't know how to describe that long and somewhat absurd dream.
Noticing his subtle change in expression, Lu Nian's almond eyes curved in a playful manner.
"A dream?" She wrapped her arms around his waist, nuzzling her head into his chest gently, she said in a soft whisper, "You are quite the lascivious one, aren't you?"
"Even this time, when we've been apart only for a few days..." she murmured in a feathery voice, casting a reproachful gaze upon him.
His face turned a deep shade of red, offering no rebuttal, silently enduring her playful accusation.
Finally, Lu Nian ceased teasing him.
She said, "So, it's because you saw me in your dream?" She still found it somewhat strange.
Because even if one dreams of a stranger, encountering them in reality would mostly evoke surprise.
But his expression back then didn't resemble surprise in the slightest.
"In that dream, I was deeply in love with you," he said softly, "just as I am now."
Lu Nian fell silent.
She understood the weight of his words.
"I observed for a long time," Qin Si said. "In the dream, I had a completely different life trajectory, but I never met you."
Back then, he was indifferent, solitary, rebellious, living like a walking corpse, devoid of goals and hope.
Only in his nightly dreams did he witness the life of another version of himself.
He thought, it was merely his fortune, and not truly his.
Hence, when he saw that girl on the street, who walked gracefully towards him, bearing a face identical to hers.
For the first time, he experienced that kind of feeling.
It seemed like some sort of prophecy.
The woman who belonged to him appeared in his world on this day, at last.
He didn't even try to hide it, just kept gazing at her intently until she disappeared from his view.
Lu Nian hugged him a bit tighter.
She suddenly felt very happy.
"It might be possible that it was all real, not a dream," she pondered aloud.
"I believe she would love that version of you as well," she whispered gently.
She had never mentioned this to Qin Si before.
When she first met him, seeing the aloof young man standing in the wind, their eyes met. Facing the scrutiny of a completely unfamiliar youth for the first time, instead of feeling disgusted, she found herself drawn to his beautiful dark eyes, involuntarily experiencing a quickened heartbeat.
No matter how many times they would meet again, she would still be captivated by him.
Just like him.
Chapter 84: Epilogue (Part One) – Zhao Yayuan's perspective.
Zhao Yayuan had been frail since birth, seemingly residing in the hospital as far back as his memory could reach.
After countless transfers, the figures he saw the most were doctors in white coats.
Zhao Tingyuan was older and had always been obedient and physically healthy, easing the worries of the family. As a result, the younger son's illness consumed all of Jiang Wenyin's attention. Since Zhao Yayuan's birth, Zhao Tingyuan had been mostly taken care of by nannies, with all eyes fixed on the fragile younger son.
Occasionally, when Zhao Yayuan would come home, Zhao Tingyuan would just be dragged to visit his younger brother. The adults would instruct him, "Tingyuan, as the elder brother, you must take good care of Xiaoya."
The relationship between Zhao Yayuan and him was quite subtle; due to their separation during childhood, they hadn't spent much time together. Zhao Yayuan had a personality that wasn't easily affectionate towards others, making their brotherly relationship somewhat lukewarm.
Later, as Zhao Yayuan grew a little older and the weather occasionally improved, he was allowed to go out and play with Zhao Tingyuan. Following their parents' instructions, Zhao Tingyuan would play with him and look after him.
At that time, Zhao Yayuan truly liked his older brother.
Subsequently, as Zhao Yayuan's condition worsened, the Zhao family sought medical help everywhere. In the end, they managed to persuade Jiang Wenyin to change his living environment.
When Zhao Yayuan was sent to Nuan'an, Zhao Tingyuan went to see him off.
The little boy was pale and thin, remaining silent, but in the end, he handed his favorite Ultraman toy to Zhao Tingyuan.
Zhao Tingyuan stored the toy away in a box, never taking it out to play, intending to return it when Zhao Yayuan came back, as he was mature for his age and had little interest in toys.
At that time, he didn't expect that Zhao Yayuan's departure would last several years.
Indeed, the air and water quality in Nuan'an was much better than in Haicheng. Zhao Yayuan adapted very well there. Initially a premature baby with underdeveloped lungs, the climate and air in Nuan'an suited him exceptionally well.
However, after experiencing some improvement in his physical condition, he encountered another issue.
Loneliness.
Situated against the backdrop of Nánqiáo Mountain, the small town of Nánqiáo was where Zhao Yayuan first landed. Initially, Qiulan's family lived in the mountains, where no more than ten households resided permanently. Every few days, Qiulan would lead him down the mountain to the town of Nánqiáo to purchase essentials and meats.
The fruits and vegetables were all home-grown.
Once pampered and spoiled at home, Zhao Yayuan was now gradually learning to water the vegetables and fend off pests in the garden.
However, apart from these chores, he had an abundance of time on his hands, with nowhere to spend it.
There were children in Nánqiáo town about his age, but at that time, Zhao Yayuan couldn't speak the local dialect, and his clothing and belongings were of a different class compared to the local children.
While his health had improved significantly compared to when he was at home, he naturally faced rejection at times when compared to the agile and energetic children of Nánqiáo who could run, jump, and climb trees and walls.
Zhao Yayuan wasn't keen on joining the crowd either, his personality a tad quirky. Since those kids didn't want to play with him, he didn't want to engage with them either.
Occasionally, he would amuse himself with games, or sit alone in the yard, watching the stream flowing through the mountains, losing track of time throughout the afternoon.
He still remembers that day, at the transition between spring and summer, under a clear sky with a gentle breeze blowing.
Due to the excellent weather, Qiulan allowed Zhao Yayuan to venture a bit farther, instructing him to avoid the waterfront and steep areas.
Zhao Yayuan, who was not accustomed to being supervised at home, had become quite familiar with the surroundings during his time in Nánqiáo. Therefore, he somewhat disobeyed the instructions, catching a few beetles and picking wild vegetables, which he carelessly stuffed into his pockets.
Unwittingly, he wandered off further than intended.
He continued to follow the stream, with towering cliffs beside him. They lived roughly halfway up Nánqiáo Mountain, and Zhao Yayuan had never ventured any higher, as Qiulan forbade it.
So, when Zhao Yayuan saw the small figure lying beside the stream, the wild vegetables in his hand fell to the ground.
It was a young boy, appearing to be about the same age as him.
Zhao Yayuan squatted beside him, calling out a few times, but there was no response.
He wondered if the boy had died.
Given his fragile health and frequent hospital visits from a young age, having himself skirted the edge of death once, he didn't find the concept of "dying" particularly astonishing.
He reached out, gently turning the boy over to find blood still flowing from his forehead, his eyes tightly closed, and his face pale.
However, noticing the subtle rise and fall of the boy's chest, indicating he was still breathing, Zhao Yayuan, despite his young age and thanks to his time spent in hospitals, recognized that this semblance seemingly indicated the boy was still alive.
But, there was no response to his calls.
After pondering for a while, Zhao Yayuan left the wild vegetables beside the boy and hurried back the way he came to call Qiulan.
Qiulan swiftly brought the boy back to their home.
The injuries were not severe, appearing to be mostly superficial wounds.
When Lu Zuo woke up, the first thing he saw was an unfamiliar ceiling. Beside him sat a young boy perched on a tall stool, swinging his legs, engrossed in a comic book. With considerable effort, Lu Zuo turned his head to observe him. Only after flipping through several pages did Zhao Yayuan realize that he had awakened.
"You're awake?" Zhao Yayuan closed the book, hopped off the stool, and handed him a glass of water.
Lu Zuo accepted it gratefully, feeling a thirst so profound, as though he hadn't drunk water in years. He gulped down the water greedily, with some even spilling from the corners of his mouth.
Accustomed to being pampered as a young master, Zhao Yayuan wasn't adept at caregiving, but he watched him finish drinking nonetheless.
He asked, "Can you speak? What's your name? How old are you?"
With a still raspy throat, he struggled to utter, "…Yes."
He remembered being pushed off a cliff.
Realizing their scheme was on the verge of exposure, the kidnappers wanted to silence him permanently, pushing him off a cliff before fleeing Nanqiao with the money from the Lu family.
His sister had abandoned him.
His mind was a jumble, possibly due to the head trauma, making speaking an exhausting task.
"This child is incredibly fortunate," Qiu Lan remarked.
Due to his young age and light weight, his fall from the cliff had been cushioned by hitting branches several times, miraculously avoiding a fatal outcome or severe injuries.
Qiu Lan had intended to seek further medical attention for him, but Nanqiao town only housed a small clinic.
The boy recovered remarkably fast, his physical wounds healing well, though he became reticent.
Despite Qiu Lan’s repeated inquiries about his name and if he belonged to a family that might be looking for him, he remained unresponsive, eventually claiming ignorance.
It seemed he had lost his memory due to the impact on his head.
Qiu Lan, having spent her entire life on Mount Nanqiao, had scant knowledge of the outside world.
Bereft of relatives, her only son had passed away in a car accident while working abroad, his wife abandoning them, leaving behind a baby wrapped in swaddling clothes, her grandson Qiu Li.
Qiu Li had been Qiu Lan’s sole companion, until a year ago when he ventured out to forage for wild vegetables and never returned. From noon till dusk, Qiu Lan waited before braving the rain with a rush-hat in search of him.
Despite scouring all possible locations, the expansive Mount Nanqiao proved too vast. Qiu Lan harbored a deep-seated aversion to the outside world, attributing her son's demise to his fascination with it, a punishment from the mountain god, even denying him a return to Nanqiao in death.
She never officially reported Qiu Li's disappearance, brushing off inquiries with vague explanations of him visiting relatives, thus concealing the truth.
She remained here, waiting for Qiu Li’s return.
Soon after, Zhao Yayuan arrived. Being of similar age as Qiu Li and frail in health, he quickly became the new focal point of Qiu Lan’s life. She devoted herself to caring for him as if he were her own grandson.
She held a deep affection for the new arrival.
It seemed as though there was a predestined notion at play; the mountain that had taken away one of her children had, on the same day one year later, bestowed upon her another.
Lu Zhuo's health was improving day by day.
The first conversation between the two children began one afternoon, with Zhao Yayuan habitually engrossed in a comic book, while Lu Zhuo silently appeared behind him at some point.
Lu Zhuo pursed his lips, pointing at a part of the comic book, he seriously remarked, “This is a villain.”
Zhao Yayuan looked up at him, “Can you read?”
Of course, he could read.
However, Lu Zhuo did not respond.
Zhao Yayuan flipped several pages backward and realized that the character Lu Zhuo pointed out indeed turned out to be a villain. He then asked, “How did you know?”
“I’ve read what happens later,” Lu Zhuo replied.
Zhao Yayuan did not ponder where Lu Zhuo might have read it before.
Lu Zhuo did not reveal his name, where he was from, his age, or anything else about himself, almost as if he had genuinely lost all memories of his past.
Zhao Yayuan was not particularly concerned about Lu Zhuo’s past.
Given that Lu Zhuo could read, had read comics, could play games with him, and spoke Mandarin, Zhao Yayuan enjoyed his company very much.
From that day on, he had a new playmate.
Having spent a month in Nanqiao, Lu Zhuo had basically recovered. He had no intention of leaving, instead learning to assist Qiu Lan in her chores with newfound attentiveness and understanding.
He seemed exceptionally adept and accustomed to pleasing others; although he clearly lacked initial skills, he learned quickly. Now he managed household tasks like wiping tables, helping with watering the plants, and buying groceries very well.
He bore a striking resemblance to Qiu Li.
Both had pale skin, large almond eyes, and a demeanor that was both well-behaved and delicate.
Sometimes, as Qiu Lan watched the little boy helping her out, she would even hallucinate, feeling as if her grandson had returned to her.
Lu Zhuo could sense it too.
That day, when the elderly lady's murky eyes settled on him and she called him "Little Qiu."
The young boy responded obediently and affectionately with a call of, "Grandma."
Henceforth, there was an unspoken consensus among them, and he became ‘Qiu Li’, severing ties with his past and embracing a new identity and life.
The only person privy to this secret was Zhao Yayuan.
He didn’t care what he was called, as long as he had someone to play with.
Every two months, the Zhao family would send someone to Nanqiao to check on Zhao Yayuan’s condition and bring living expenses and supplies.
Upon seeing an additional young boy at the home, Qiu Lan introduced him seamlessly, "This is my grandson, Qiu Li, he came back during a family visit."
"That's great, having another person to accompany Yayuan for play," the Zhao family's visitor remarked, showing clear affection.
Therefore, from then on, when they brought supplies, they would prepare double the amount of toys for the young boy.
Zhao Yayuan was a bit wilder compared to Qiu Li, and had spent a slightly longer time in Nanqiao.
Having a playmate meant they could now enjoy many activities that were not possible to do alone before.
The pair connected online for gaming, climbed trees in the courtyard, caught fish in the stream, and hunted insects together.
Zhao Yayuan had a wild nature but unfortunately had always been frail. Qiu Li was slightly healthier but naturally preferred tranquility.
Despite their differences, they got along well and enjoyed their chats.
After almost two years, on a winter night, with Qiu Lan already asleep, Zhao Yayuan sat in the room, idly playing a game by the fire, while outside snow cloaked the mountains in profound darkness.
"What are you daydreaming about?" Zhao Yayuan didn't lift his head.
Qiu Li was staring out the window at the falling snow, he asked, "Xiaoya, do you have any other siblings?"
Zhao Yayuan paused his gaming, pondering, "I have an older brother, I think."
Even though they hadn't spent much time together, Zhao Yayuan acknowledged his role as an older brother, albeit reluctantly, he couldn't deny having one.
"That makes us similar," Qiu Li said with a sudden sparkle in his voice, "I have a sister. However, she's only ten minutes older than me."
Setting down the gaming console, Zhao Yayuan fixed his gaze on Qiu Li, stating firmly, "You never lost your memory, did you?"
Qiu Li let out a small laugh.
More words were not necessary between them. Zhao Yayuan stretched lazily, moving closer to the fire, "What happened to your sister? Did she treat you badly?"
"My sister..." Qiu Li murmured.
Although he had been here for less than two years, the designation seemed suddenly very distant.
There was a time when he loathed Lu Nian to the bone, despised her for her cruelty, for abandoning him.
Yet, as time passed, those feelings seemed to have gradually diluted.
His feelings towards his sister were complex; he remembered Lu Nian's cruelty and abuse, and clearly recollected the last time he saw her - how she had wrenched her hand from his grasp, her eyes filled with fear, screaming at him to leave, to stop following her.
She left alone, not looking back at him, not even sparing him a second glance, and he vividly remembered the fear and desperation he felt when he was subsequently thrown off a cliff.
"Twins, huh? Does she look a lot like you?" Zhao Yayuan asked as he tossed a chestnut into the fire for roasting, listening to Qiu Li say, "I look nothing like my brother."
"Not really similar," Qiu Li corrected himself after some thought, "Well, maybe a little bit alike."
"That must be quite a sight to behold then."
Zhao Yayuan pondered.
Despite being extremely malicious, capable of perpetrating such deeds against her own younger brother.
He mused, although Zhao Tingyuan might be an uninspiring older brother, at least he would never treat him in such a manner.
Malice was the first impression that the name Lu Nian left on Zhao Yayuan.
As the pair grew older, Zhao Yayuan's health gradually improved. The ceaseless night-time coughing came to an end, filling the Zhao family with joy and a growing sense that it was no longer appropriate to keep him in Nanqiao.
Being the son of the Zhao family, it was only fitting that he received a quality education to eventually take over the family business. Remaining in the small mountain village indefinitely was not a solution.
Initially, sending him to Nanqiao had been a measure of last resort. Now seeing his improved condition, the Zhao family naturally wanted to bring him home.
"My family wants me to return home," Zhao Yayuan mentioned to Qiu Li, after receiving a call from Jiang Wenyan the previous day.
The two of them visited Nanqiao town for some shopping, where many locals recognized them.
Two boys of similar age walked side by side on the bluestone pavement in Nanqiao town; the one on the left slightly shorter, boasting an exceptionally handsome face albeit with a somewhat sullen expression, while the one on the right was taller, radiating a gentle and serene demeanor, also quite attractive in appearance.
Both wore robes stitched by Qiu Lan personally, and had mastered the local dialect. Aside from their striking appearances, they hardly seemed like outsiders.
Qiu Li wasn't particularly surprised, stating, "It's inevitable that you would return."
After all, he still had a family, only temporarily residing here due to his ill health.
Zhao Yayuan remained silent for a while before asking, "What about you? What will you do?"
Qiu Li replied, "I won't go back."
The years he spent in Nanqiao had been several times happier than the days at the Lu residence. He wasn't sure how to face Lu Nian anymore.
Under the setting sun, his eyes reflected a beautiful deep brown hue, his expression serene.
"Why do you always speak like an old man?" Zhao Yayuan frowned, suddenly jumping up to hook his arm around Qiu Li's neck, forcefully pressing his head downward.
Caught off guard by the sudden maneuver, Qiu Li nearly dropped his back basket. Zhao Yayuan had already run ahead. Adjusting his basket, Qiu Li chased after him, stating, "That's exactly the point, you can't possibly stay here forever."
Zhao Yayuan retorted, "I never planned to spend my entire life here."
"Oh, right." He plucked a blade of grass from the roadside and chewed on it thoughtfully, "When I return in the future, I'll help you deal with that wicked woman."
Qiu Li paused, and then with a wry smile said, "What wicked woman?"
Years had passed, and he had gradually come to terms with certain things.
Blood ties were unchangeable. However, Lu Nian didn't owe him anything. Although fate had bound them as twins, Lu Nian had, through her actions, made it abundantly clear countless times that she greatly disliked him.
Even more so, she harbored a deep aversion towards him.
Whether in language or behavior, she has exhibited it so clearly and directly.
Given a choice, she would absolutely refuse to be his sibling.
It was his lack of understanding.
Sometimes, familial bonds are a strange phenomenon. True blood relatives can eventually become detestable enemies, while bonds thicker than blood can sometimes form amidst strangers.
Therefore, Qiuli has come to terms with it.
"If I do encounter her in the future, is there anything you'd like me to convey on your behalf?" Zhao Yayuan asked.
"No," Qiuli responded, "I am now, and will always be, Qiuli, unrelated to my past."
He spoke calmly, "Even if she found out, it wouldn't bring her joy, I presume."
Zhao Yayuan shrugged, "As you wish, then."
He wasn't the type to meddle in others' affairs unnecessarily. If Qiuli believed this was best, then there was no need for him to intervene.
At the age of twelve, Zhao Yayuan returned to Haicheng for a visit during the Lunar New Year. Although his health had improved significantly, compared to his peers, he still appeared somewhat frail. Zhao Tingyuan had matured into a young gentleman with a dignified and elegant demeanor, making the brothers seem even more different when standing together.
Jiang Wenyan was overjoyed, proclaiming that the family was finally reunited, nearly brought to tears in her happiness.
The city of Haicheng was densely packed with tall buildings, much like his distant memories — the sky smog-ridden, the air and the sea murky.
Zhao Yayuan didn't particularly enjoy his New Year at the Zhao residence. He instinctively sensed the estrangement between him and Zhao Tingyuan, despite his efforts to hide it in Tingyuan's presence.
The Zhao family mansion was expansive, but whether it was the visiting friends and subordinates or the household servants, it seemed they had all grown accustomed to the household having just one young master. Upon Zhao Yayuan's return from Nanqiao...
He felt like an outsider, a misfit in this home.
Zhao Yayuan, usually well-behaved, felt uncomfortable in this atmosphere, a sentiment that naturally manifested itself. Hence, his first New Year back home, a moment Jiang Wenyan had long dreamed of as a 'family reunion,' was not quite the joyful occasion she had hoped for.
When summer arrived, Zhao Yayuan returned to Nanqiao. As he approached Qiu Lan's house, he saw Qiuli bending over to water the plants in the yard from a distance.
Zhao Yayuan pushed open the wooden fence, and Qiuli, hearing the noise, set down his watering can and greeted Zhao Yayuan, "You're back?"
"What are you planting?" Zhao Yayuan inquired.
Compared to when he left last year, things had changed here, albeit not drastically. The yard now housed transplanted fruit trees. He picked a plum from a tree and took a bite, grimacing at its sourness, "So sour."
"That's just how this variety is," Qiuli remarked, "Grandma likes it."
He invited Zhao Yayuan inside, escaping the harsh sun into the ever-cool interior.
"How was your time at home?" Qiuli asked.
"It was alright, I guess. Just as it usually is," Zhao Yayuan replied, somewhat absent-mindedly.
He didn't particularly enjoy school, and his grades weren't great either. Knowing his background, the teachers didn't bother him much. However, in contrast, he seemed to have quickly found a circle of dubious friends.
Zhao Tingyuan has already started junior high school, excelling academically. Jiang Wenyin encouraged him to guide his younger brother. What endeared Zhao Yayuan to him was that Zhao Tingyuan did not micromanage him, nor did he force him to study, sometimes even helping him with his homework.
Zhao Yayuan felt he had performed well, and the relationship between the two brothers had notably improved compared to before.
Qiuli asked, "Have you made any friends?"
"Friends?" Zhao Yayuan said, with a slight curl of his lips.
He was not lacking in playmates around him, but there wasn't a single one who could truly be called a friend.
Seeing that Zhao Yayuan seemed to be doing well, growing taller and looking healthier, Qiuli no longer worried.
Outside, the sun was blazingly hot; Zhao Yayuan had already begun his summer break.
"We haven't finished our final exams yet," Qiuli said, "There are a few more days of classes."
Qiuli was a good student in Nanduo, performing well academically.
Zhao Yayuan suggested, "I'll come and visit your school with you."
He was bored being here alone, so he thought it would be a good opportunity to visit Qiuli's school.
Nanduo didn't have many students, and the facilities were subpar. It was on the verge of closing down, and the local students would have had to go elsewhere for their studies.
Zhao Yayuan mentioned this at home, and Jiang Wenyin made a donation to the school, allowing it to continue operating smoothly.
Being in a remote area, the educational quality in Nanduo couldn't match up. Zhao Yayuan had never studied here. During his childhood, when his health was fragile, he had home tutors. Now, the school he attended in Haicheng was amongst the top elite institutions, naturally having infrastructural facilities
That were completely incomparable to those in Nanduo.
In the summer, there was no air conditioning available.
The school wasn't as cool as home; the sun blazed fiercely outside, the fans were old and squeaky, and a piece of the curtain at the back of the classroom had fallen off, revealing
Zhao Yayuan was not accustomed to this environment, and asked Qiuli incredulously, "Aren't you hot?"
Dressed in a pure white short-sleeve shirt with no signs of perspiration on his face, Qiuli responded nonchalantly, "Not really, a calm mind keeps the heat at bay."
Zhao Yayuan commented, "...Alright then."
Soon, the bell rang signaling the start of class. Zhao Yayuan, having no interest in the lesson and feeling slightly drowsy from the heat, opted to pull his hat down and doze off in the back row.
The appearance of a new face at the back of the classroom did not go unnoticed for long.
The teacher who came to teach knew Zhao Yayuan's background. Qiuli had asked in advance if Zhao Yayuan could attend classes for a few days, to which the teacher readily agreed.
Zhao Yayuan had striking good looks and a demeanor markedly different from the local children in Nanduo.
Children at this age were gradually becoming more aware, and many couldn't help but cast furtive glances at him, with the number of second looks noticeably increased compared to normal days.
It was only Qiuli who remained serene and focused on his book or class, seemingly oblivious to the gazes directed at Zhao Yayuan, who was sleeping behind him, and the whispers and stares from the others.
The teacher knew he was the child from the Zhao family who had donated half a million to the school. Since he wasn't disrupting the class, the teacher chose to turn a blind eye, albeit coughing emphatically a few times, "What are you all staring at? Focus on the blackboard! Finals are approaching, are you all listening?"
After class, Zhao Yayuan woke up, intending to wait for Qiuli to leave together. Opening his eyes to find so many people surrounding him, he froze.
In the past, Zhao Yayuan was not welcomed in Nanqiao, as everyone was young and naive, harboring a sense of xenophobia.
Now, as they had grown, everyone was aware that Zhao Yayuan was a wealthy young master from the city, distinctly different from them. At this age, apart from his inherent allure, the sons of wealthy families carried a certain charisma, and with his handsome face, he commanded attention wherever he went.
Qiuli had other responsibilities to attend to after class in the library. Growing impatient while waiting, Zhao Yayuan put his hat on backward and went to find him, "How much longer will it take?"
Qiuli replied softly, "Not much longer."
The two walked side by side out of the school. Although Zhao Yayuan had grown accustomed to the scenery of Nanqiao, he squinted at the swirling dust bathed in golden sunlight and asked Qiuli, "Have I changed?"
He certainly hadn't forgotten the rejection he faced as a child. Now, with everyone crowding around him, he could guess part of the reason but wondered if that was all there was to it.
"No," Qiuli saw no change in him.
Qiuli took him to the marketplace, where they bought a live carp and some locally produced asparagus. Zhao Yayuan enjoyed the fresh and flavorful fish soup cooked by Qiulan. They bought some more vegetables and headed home, each carrying a bag of groceries.
Since Qiulan had moved to Nanqiao, it had become much more convenient to shop for provisions.
As they walked down the street together, Qiuli mentioned, "Grandma has been missing you and worries about you adjusting back home."
"Being pampered as a young master, what's there not to adapt to?"
Qiuli chuckled, "Well, that's good then. I heard from grandma that you've been having frequent arguments at home, I was worried you were having a hard time."
"If you want, you can also live the life of a young master," Zhao Yayuan scoffed, "It's not like I argue all the time, it has lessened quite a bit recently."
He knew Qiuli's real name.
After returning home, Zhao Yayuan had used various means to inquire about it. Although he wasn't in Ancheng, gathering information was quite simple given the Zhao family's influence there.
"It seems your sister is not doing very well," Zhao Yayuan remarked.
"She was depressed for a while, even attempted suicide, causing quite a commotion in the Lu family," Zhao Yayuan shrugged, "But it seems she has improved considerably over the past few years, no longer causing trouble and managing to attend school normally."
Qiuli listened silently, the furrow in his brow gradually easing.
After all, he wished for no one to reach a point where they contemplated suicide.
"Moreover, I heard something else. The Lu family adopted an orphan from the welfare institute," Zhao Yayuan said, giving him a meaningful glance.
Qiuli's pace slowed slightly.
This was something he was unaware of, an unexpected development.
"A bit older than you," Zhao Yayuan continued, "Though, I haven't seen what they look like."
"It seems that old man Lu hasn't intended to have him take your place," Zhao Yayuan said, "He hasn't undergone the formal procedures, so he's not officially a part of the Lu family."
Naturally, there is a distinction between being biologically related and unrelated.
"The old man is still trying to find you," Zhao Yayuan remarked, "Aren't you tempted at all by the substantial amount of money?"
Switching the hand that was holding the fish, Qiu Li rubbed his wrist and calmly said, "I just want to lead a more tranquil life."
He was never someone driven by material desires, and these past few years in Nanqiao have been quite peaceful.
Zhao Yayuan brought up the idea of moving to Haicheng to study with him many times, but Qiu Li declined every time.
He has already planned it out: staying in Nanqiao, where he can maintain his grades for now, then going to high school in Nanbin, followed by university, all the while looking after Qiu Lan and leading a quiet, personal life.
Time flies by swiftly.
Due to business expansion, the Zhao family decided to move back to Ancheng during Zhao Yayuan's ninth grade year.
By then, Zhao Tingyuan had already started high school, having moved to Ancheng a year earlier.
According to the plan, Zhao Yayuan was to follow the next year.
Jiang Wenyan was somewhat reluctant, constantly feeling that Zhao Yayuan was still a child unable to take care of himself properly.
Zhao Yayuan had no particular attachment to life in Haicheng. Upon hearing the news, the only thing that crossed his mind was whether he would end up being classmates with Lu Nian.
On the first night in Ancheng, he called Qiu Li.
The summer nights in Ancheng were cooler than in Haicheng, offering a more comfortable climate.
"The weather here is indeed better than in Haicheng," Zhao Yayuan commented as he walked along the streets of Ancheng.
The nightlife in southern cities always seemed to be livelier than in the north. Even at this hour, the streets were bustling with people, the noise from the late-night food stalls, boisterous youths, and music from the shopping plaza intermingling in the night sky.
"Where did your family live before? Should I go have a look?" Zhao Yayuan asked.
Qiu Li knew he was joking, "No need, there's nothing worth seeing."
"You must be reporting to your new school tomorrow, right?" Qiu Li mentioned, "Get some sleep earlier, and try to be less temperamental in the future."
Suddenly, Zhao Yayuan said, "Lu Nian is at the same school as me."
Qiu Li responded, "Hmm."
He had already set several ground rules with Zhao Yayuan beforehand, urging him to treat her just like any other ordinary classmate or friend, and most importantly, not to discuss his matters with Lu Nian.
What's in the past remains in the past.
At the dinner organized by Zhao Tingyuan and Lu Yang, Zhao Yayuan met Lu Nian for the first time.
Quite different from what he had imagined.
At least at first glance, there wasn't any trace of a malicious or sinister aura.
Zhao Yayuan prided himself on his keen judgement of character.
She bore a striking resemblance to Lu Zhuo, yet the subtle differences in the contours of their brows and eyes endowed them with distinctly different temperaments.
As their encounters increased following that day, they gradually became more familiar with each other.
Lu Nian was a truly unique individual. She wasn't aggressive nor was she overtly gentle towards others. However, her presence carried a peculiar ambient quality that invariably made people feel at ease around her.
Zhao Yayuan naturally had a brash way of speaking, and his initial impression of her was quite unfavorable, making his remarks even less pleasant.
Lu Nian didn't seem to mind much; sometimes she would retort, and at other times she would pretend not to hear, too lazy to respond.
In any case, moments of her showing anger were rare.
The first time Zhao Yayuan saw her angry was during a heated argument she had with the young boy adopted by the Lu family.
It was a true altercation, with neither party willing to back down, seemingly on the verge of a falling out at any moment.
Zhao Yayuan hadn't anticipated that their relationship would be so strained.
He inquired further, and someone recounted all the details of Qin Si's life in the Lu household, mentioning that the young lady indeed had a poor relationship with him, which had been the case since their childhood, exacerbated by the abuse he endured in the Lu household during his younger years.
Attending the same school, Zhao Yayuan also encountered the rumored 'adopted son', though his first meeting with Qin Si was not particularly pleasant.
Lu Nian seldom mentioned that young man in his presence.
By then, Qin Si had already moved out of the Lu residence, hardly ever returning.
At that point, Zhao Yayuan's perception of Lu Nian had significantly changed. Once, driven by curiosity, he asked why her relationship with Qin Si was so fraught.
After all, it was rare to see someone with a generally mild demeanor get so consistently infuriated to the point of heated arguments and confrontations.
Lu Nian paused for a moment before saying, "It's just not good, he despises me."
Afterwards, she didn't say much more, her expression somber.
Zhao Yayuan didn't delve further into the matter thereafter.
Through continuous probing and investigation, he realized that she truly had lost her memory, to the extent that she had completely forgotten she once had a twin brother.
The Lu family was also concealing this from her.
Any signs that Lu Zhuo had ever existed were being systematically erased, leaving no trace behind.
If it wasn't for Zhao Yayuan's understanding of Qiu Li's character and the fact that the circumstances indeed matched up, he might have suspected that all these stories were figments of Qiu Li's imagination or fabricated.
Nonetheless, his plan was progressing smoothly, step by step.
After the university entrance exams, he took Luniang to Nanqiao, facilitating a smooth reunion between her and her sibling.
Afterwards, he had a lengthy discussion with Qiuli, who naturally noticed her transformation but chose to remain silent, embracing the current version of Luniang. Zhao Yayuan was naturally pleased to see this development.
However, Qinsi's unexpected appearance during the trip to Nanqiao was unforeseen; he wanted to collaborate with him to gain access to the Lu family's network.
The interactions between the Lu and Zhao families had been increasingly frequent lately, and there was a high probability, as per their families' intentions, of a business alliance through marriage.
Lu Zhihong intended to marry Luniang to either him or Zhao Tingyuan.
Zhao Yayuan had always disliked Lu Zhihong, yet, he harboured no objections to a matrimonial alliance with the Lu family and didn't want to see Zhao Tingyuan marry Luniang either.
Thus, it had to be him.
He had a free and casual personality, which paired well with Luniang's disposition of not meddling in others' affairs. Although their interests and hobbies weren't entirely aligned, their interaction was quite pleasant and relaxed.
Zhao Yayuan had always had a detached disposition since childhood, possibly because he received an abundance of love from his parents and relatives. He believed that the affection he gave others would never match half of what was bestowed upon him.
Although his fondness for Luniang couldn't be described as intensely deep, it was indeed a rare sentiment for him.
Due to his nature, he seldom felt affectionate towards someone or something, and he consistently failed to understand overly intense emotions, whether familial, platonic, or romantic.
Having realized this, he thought marrying Luniang seemed quite nice.
Luniang harboured no special feelings for him beyond friendship. Instead, it was Zhao Yayuan's intuition that sensed, vaguely, that in Luniang's heart, there was someone truly distinctive.
Unfortunately, unreciprocated, one-sided affection that lacked a response could not sustain itself for long on fervour alone.
Therefore, he agreed to collaborate with Qinsi.
Subsequently, Qinsi left to travel far away, completely leaving Ancheng.
In those years, Zhao Yayuan and Qinsi maintained occasional contact, albeit infrequently.
Zhao Yayuan's school was adjacent to Luniang's, and Luniang and Qiuli attended the same institution.
Zhao Yayuan frequently visited her at An University.
Luniang had yet to give her consent to their engagement, but Zhao Yayuan was not in a hurry, finding their current relationship quite comfortable.
Lu Nian and Qiu Li share a close bond as siblings, having purchased a home together outside. Sometimes, during holidays, Zhao Yayuan visits them and occasionally stays overnight, enjoying the familiarity and camaraderie that eliminates the necessity for formalities.
Zhao Yayuan's pursuit of her has a subtle and unhurried pace, to the extent that even he may not have realized he is courting her. A significant turn in their story occurs one day.
After participating in a student union activity, Lu Nian becomes inebriated.
During this period, Qiu Lan is hospitalized and Qiu Li, who has been keeping her company at the hospital, couldn't make it back in time. Upon learning that Lu Nian is drunk, he urgently calls Zhao Yayuan to pick her up and bring her back to their residence.
Zhao Yayuan had never anticipated seeing her intoxicated to the point of losing herself, not due to others but genuinely drunk. She looked up at him, her face slightly blurred, and offered him a watery smile.
Zhao Yayuan paused momentarily, realizing that in all the time he had known her, Lu Nian had never smiled at him in this manner.
It didn't take long for him to understand the reason behind her unusual demeanor.
In her dazed state, the girl uttered a name aloud.
"You're back." She muttered this single sentence before succumbing to her drunkenness, leaning against his shoulder, and falling into a peaceful and sweet slumber.
The suspicions that had lingered in Zhao Yayuan's mind for a long while were finally confirmed.
Yet, peculiarly, following that incident, it seemed as if he had gained a newfound clarity, his affection for her intensifying further.
It was from that day onwards that he began harboring a growing anticipation, a genuine possibility that they could someday marry.
From childhood to adulthood, things had gone smoothly for him until then.
Destiny possesses a peculiar temperament, seemingly guided by a force known as "momentum".
Once set on a trajectory, it tends to persist, either ascending or descending, and only individuals with enough willpower, determination, and strength are capable of altering the course, reversing the trend.
Zhao Yayuan did not consider himself to be such an individual, and indeed, he wasn't.
At that time, he had essentially given up, allowing his physical condition to deteriorate further.
The details of those grueling months became increasingly foggy in Zhao Yayuan's memory.
Ultimately, the storm subsided, giving way to a tranquil and steady period.
He did not attend the wedding ceremony between Lu Nian and Qin Si.
Qiu Li was somewhat concerned for him, yet hesitated to inquire further.
Claiming that he was unaffected would be implausible.
However, Zhao Yayuan himself admitted,
That the affection he harbored was fundamentally different from the depth of feelings Qin Si held for her.
It seemed unlikely that he would ever comprehend the fervent yet restrained love that compelled one to devote themselves wholly to another, orchestrating and planning for years just to rightfully stand by her side.
Not long after their marriage, Zhao Yayuan resumed contact with them.
After the marriage, there seems to be no trace of weariness in their relationship. However, whenever Zhao Yayuan happens to encounter them, the ambiance between them feels entirely different.
Being a man who has never been married or even been in a romantic relationship, Zhao Yayuan finds it difficult to understand.
He notices that Qin Si still isn't particularly welcoming towards him. Consequently, he increases the frequency of his visits to their home, with a greater sense of mirth.
To Zhao Yayuan, making Qin Si slightly uncomfortable feels oddly satisfying.
Zhao Xiuyi also has a fondness for Lu Nian. However, it's blatantly clear that he is quite wary of Qin Si. Whenever Qin Si is present, he maintains a respectful demeanor, avoiding any undue familiarity with Lu Nian.
Zhao Yayuan reassures him that there's nothing to worry about, expressing confidence that his nephew has a brighter future than him.
Life goes on in this manner. The development in Nanqiao is progressing well; he has funded local schools and improved the transportation infrastructure there. Under his stewardship, the Zhao family has gradually regained its vitality. Zhao Xiuyi, being sensible and obedient, doesn't give him much trouble.
Finally, no one could restrain him any longer, and he lives a life of unbounded freedom.
Work, recreation, travel, and the occasional meddlesome visit to friends' houses, he enjoys it all, accompanied by a motley crew of friends and acquaintances.
It's the life he has dreamt of since childhood, a life he believes he can joyfully sustain into his old age.
Chapter 85: Epilogue (Part 2) - United in Life and Death (The End)
Qiu Lan passed away on a summer night, peacefully and without illness. Considering her advanced age and a consistently frail health, the fact that she lived to this age and passed away naturally was deemed miraculous by the doctors.
According to the customs of Nanqiao, this is considered a "joyous funeral," where sadness should not prevail.
Even so, upon hearing the news, Lu Nian was deeply shaken, understanding the significant role Qiu Lan played in Qiu Li's life.
Her mind in turmoil, instead of calling Qiu Li first, she dialed Zhao Yayuan's number.
After all, in some respects, Zhao Yayuan could also be considered as someone raised by Qiu Lan.
On the other end of the line, his voice remained calm, "It's a joyous funeral, an event that was bound to happen sooner or later. She left without any suffering."
"What are your plans now?" Lu Nian asked, feeling a slight sense of relief.
"We will take her back to Nanqiao," Zhao Yayuan replied, "It was her last wish."
Unbeknownst to her, Qin Si had returned and was standing at the doorway, listening to her end the call.
With traces of sorrow still evident on her face, she leaned into his embrace, her voice muffled as she said, "What should we do? Do you think I should go to Nanqiao with them?"
Qin Si lowered his eyes, responding, "He isn't that fragile."
Lu Nian questioned, "Yayuan?"
Observing his expression, she clarified, "I'm not overly concerned about him, I'm more worried about Xiao Qiu... I fear he might spiral into negative thoughts."
Qiu Li has such a personality, quite different from Zhao Yayuan's resilient nature.
This anxiety reached its peak when Zhao Yayuan called in the evening to inform her that Qiuli had locked himself in his room, turned off his mobile phone, and expressed his desire to be alone for a while, wishing not to see anyone.
She had just finished a drawing draft recently and finally had some downtime. Initially, she had planned to wait for Qin Si for a combined holiday, but before they could commence, this incident occurred.
Lu Nian couldn't hide her emotions, and by evening, she was still taciturn, her demeanor visibly languid.
Qin Si noticed this and said, "Tomorrow, you should go back with them and check on the situation."
"You don't object?" Lu Nian was somewhat pleasantly surprised.
Since their marriage up until now, they had hardly spent time apart; it seemed as if Qin Si was trying to make up for all the lost time from before.
If she were to go to Nanqiao this time, she would inevitably be away for at least three days, disrupting their anticipated vacation plans. She knew how much Qin Si had been looking forward to it, working overtime recently to finish work quickly so he could accompany her on a holiday.
Moreover, if they were to leave for Nanqiao tomorrow, Qin Si couldn't join her due to a significant contract meeting scheduled for that day from which he couldn't excuse himself.
"Go," he said, "but remember to call on time."
"Okay," Lu Nian agreed promptly.
"You're not upset?" she asked.
After all, she understood that delaying their vacation plans due to the issues involving Zhao Yayuan and Qiuli, and spending time apart might cause Qin Si some discomfort.
"No," he whispered, planting a kiss on her cheek.
Nonetheless, his words couldn't be wholly trusted. Lu Nian knew that he had long accustomed himself to concealing his emotions, especially negative ones, rendering them virtually imperceptible to her.
Therefore, that night, they became even more intimately connected.
Consider it a compensation for him.
The next day, Lu Nian finally met Qiuli. He was inherently frail, and compared to his previous state, the unreceding dark circles and significant weight loss were apparent signs of the substantial impact he had experienced.
Qiulan had expressed no desire for a funeral. Apart from Zhao Yayuan and Qiuli, she had no close relatives in this world. Considering Qiulan's past kindness in raising Zhao Yayuan, the Zhao family originally intended to organize a funeral, but Zhao Yayuan stopped them.
There was no particular reason, he simply hoped to fulfill the old lady's wish to proceed with the final journey in her own preferred way.
They met at Zhao Yayuan's house, preparing to catch an afternoon flight back to Nanqiao with Qiulan.
Lu Nian was at a loss for how to console Qiuli, so she could only accompany him in casual conversation, discussing insignificant matters to divert his attention.
The atmosphere in Zhao Yayuan's house was very quiet.
Zhao Yayuan seemed to be handling the situation better than Qiuli, showing no significant changes. In the whole house, the three adults were not very talkative, with only Zhao Xiuyi, being younger and unable to grasp the gravity of the situation, being the exception.
However, the child's ability to perceive the adults' emotions was surprisingly strong.
He could sense the unhappiness engulfing the three adults he cherished, and being an extraordinarily sensitive child, he didn't dare to make a sound or display his usual cheerful antics.
Lu Nian noticed this.
She waved him over, "Long time no see, Xiuyi has grown taller."
"Auntie." The little boy obediently walked closer, giving her a hug.
Lu Nian tried to lift him, realizing that he had indeed become much heavier than before.
"He's been eating a lot these days, and often plays outside," Zhao Yayuan said, "He's grown a lot, you probably can't lift him anymore."
"I don't need to be lifted." Zhao Xiuyi quietly retorted, climbing onto the couch and sitting beside Lu Nian, sitting up straight, seemingly trying to demonstrate that he has grown up.
His personality was well nurtured by Zhao Yayuan, being obedient and always fond of Lu Nian.
Lu Nian liked him too. Somehow, she always felt that she had a special connection with this child.
"Indeed, Xiuyi has grown up," Lu Nian gently pinched his cheek.
Zhao Yayuan said, "You've grown up, so you'll be going to grandma's house this afternoon."
"Why do I have to go to grandma's house?"
Zhao Yayuan explained, "We have to travel far away this afternoon and there will be no one at home. Who will take care of you? Someone will come to pick you up in the afternoon, and you can go to grandma's house by yourself."
Unexpectedly, upon hearing these words, the little boy curled up, mumbling, "…Okay."
"Xiuyi, what's wrong?" Lu Nian noticed his unease.
The little boy's grape-like big eyes were already reddened, teary-eyed.
Zhao Yayuan was perplexed, "?"
What's going on with this kid again?
He actually had a rather rough personality. Although he was good to Zhao Xiuyi, as a man who was never married, he wasn't capable of providing nuanced care, unlike a kindergarten teacher who could offer comprehensive and attentive care.
Qiuli had remained silent, being the most sensitive among the three.
His voice was somewhat hoarse, "Let's take him with us."
"He's afraid that you won't come back."
With Zhao Tingyuan disappearing and Su Qingyou passing away, and the Su family neglecting the remaining child, Jiang Wenyan continued to dote on her grandson as always. However, due to the shock of their son and daughter-in-law's incidents, both were not in the best health in recent years. Therefore, Zhao Xiuyi actually spent most of his time with Zhao Yayuan.
Naturally, there were people in the Zhao family discussing this; after all, with Zhao Yayuan's qualifications, it wasn't like he couldn't find a partner. He remained single, possibly because he was held back by this "burden".
People talked like this, and it wasn't as if Zhao Xiuyi hadn't heard it.
In the beginning, he was very scared but didn't dare to ask Zhao Yayuan.
He was afraid that Zhao Yayuan might truly abandon him.
When Su Qingyou and Zhao Tingyuan had their incident, Zhao Xiuyi was still in his infancy. Hence, as he grew to his current age, his memories of his parents had completely faded, knowing only that Zhao Yayuan was genuinely the only person who treated him well.
Today, seeing all three adults in such a distressed mood, and hearing Zhao Yayuan say they all had to leave, sending him to his grandmother's, he suddenly feared that maybe they truly didn't want him anymore.
Using this as an excuse to send him away.
Zhao Yayuan, "..."
He hugged Zhao Xiuyi, pinching his cheek fiercely.
"You little ingrate," he said, "Haven't I treated you well? You're only this old, and your mind is filled with nonsense."
The little boy's soft and white bun-like face was distorted from the pinch, he mumbled unclearly, "...I'm not."
"Not what?"
"Not an ingrate," he said with a wronged expression, looking at Lu Nian and Qiu Li across him, he earnestly continued, "When I grow up, I want to take care of all of you, Uncle, Little Qiu Uncle, and Auntie."
Lu Nian couldn't help but bend her eyes into a smile.
"Your auntie has someone to take care of her," Zhao Yayuan said lazily, letting go and allowing Zhao Xiuyi to leave, "If you want to take care, first ask if others agree to you taking care of his wife."
Zhao Xiuyi was still young, not quite understanding these words, his big eyes blinked in confusion, not comprehending at all.
However, with this interaction, the tense atmosphere in the room finally relaxed a bit.
In a low voice, Lu Nian asked Qiu Li, "Can you really handle taking Xiuyi along?"
Qiu Li smiled, "It's okay, we're just taking grandma back home. If he wants to come with us, let him come."
Xiuyi is also well-behaved, not difficult to manage.
Uncommonly, the flight was not delayed.
The burial plot had been chosen by Qiu Lan early on. After landing, it was nearly midnight, and with Zhao Xiuyi barely able to keep his eyes open from exhaustion, the three decided to postpone Qiu Lan's burial until the next day.
None of them felt like sleeping.
Since settling down in Ancheng, both Zhao Yayuan and Qiu Li were preoccupied with business affairs. Lu Nian, after getting married, naturally prioritized accompanying her husband, resulting in their gatherings becoming much less frequent than before.
Qiu Li commented, "Nan Qiao has changed a lot too."
Zhao Yayuan stayed home with Zhao Xiuyi.
The tourist development was excellent, maintaining its original ecological foundation while vastly improving the infrastructure, accommodation, and other travel-related amenities.
Memories surged in Lu Nian, "Back then, Nan Qiao only had one rundown inn, run by a chubby owner. I wonder if it's still in business."
While she could adapt, visitors from other cities might not find it agreeable.
Zhao Yayuan remarked, "It's still running, even expanded. The conditions are now top-notch."
He gazed out of the window, noticing that the lights of Nan Qiao town were much brighter compared to the past. The school had expanded, air conditioning was installed, and a number of volunteer teachers had arrived.
Zhao Xiuyi had already fallen asleep, with his finger in his mouth, curled up into a small bundle on the bed.
Zhao Yayuan suddenly asked, "Does he know about you coming out with us this time?"
Lu Nian, "..."
"Of course he knows." How could she possibly leave without informing Qin Si, especially to go out with Zhao Yayuan? Otherwise, not even jumping into the Yellow River would clear her name.
"How did he agree?" Zhao Yayuan asked with a smirk, "Keeping such a tight rein on you, has the sun risen from the west?"
No matter how much time had passed, whenever Qin Si was mentioned in front of her, Zhao Yayuan always used this tone.
Their relationship had always been like this.
In the past, sometimes Qiu Li would try to mediate, but later simply gave up.
Lu Nian couldn't be bothered to respond anymore, treating it as if she hadn't heard it.
The next day, the three of them visited the cemetery together, witnessing the interment of Qiu Lan's urn.
The little boy was left at home for the time being. Qiu Li asked a friend to look after him temporarily, as there were many children of the same age in the vicinity of Nan Qiao.
When the three adults returned, they found a group of four or five children of roughly the same age gathered in the courtyard, playing with Zhao Xiuyi.
Having grown up in the city, Zhao Xiuyi had never visited the countryside before and was unfamiliar with the way they played. His eyes shone with excitement as he played joyously.
In reality, he was a shy child, but he had found peers to play with.
Observing the scene in the courtyard, Qiu Li's lips twitched slightly. He didn't open the gate, simply watching from a distance.
Lu Nian understood his sentiment.
Life is such, a continuous cycle of passing and renewal.
Zhao Xiuyi was soaked with sweat from playing. Zhao Yayuan grumbled as he bathed him. Being somewhat of a young master himself, he had never attended to anyone before. However, with Jiang Wenyan and Zhao Rulan not around, and no housekeepers or maids nearby, as his close uncle, he had no choice but to personally take care of him.
Outside, Lu Nian and Qiu Li were chatting.
Qiu Li seemed much more composed, "I plan to stay in Nan Qiao for a while."
"Alright," Lu Nian replied.
He asked, "What about you?"
He also understood that it was unlikely for Lu Nian to stay in Nan Qiao indefinitely.
Noticing his pale complexion, Lu Nian chose her words carefully, "I'll leave the day after tomorrow."
Spend a little more time with him.
She truly couldn't ease her worries about Qiu Li; therefore, after much contemplation, she decided to stay for at least a few more days.
While they were conversing, her phone rang. Lu Nian glanced at the caller ID, saying, "I need to take this call."
She pushed open the door, stepping into the courtyard.
Qiu Li instinctively knew who was calling.
Zhao Yayuan had just finished bathing Zhao Xiuyi, brought him out and changed his clothes. Zhao Xiuyi, having enjoyed himself immensely during the day, was still full of energy, "Will we stay here tomorrow? Xiao Liang said he would take me to the mountain to play."
He narrated vividly, his voice still carrying a hint of childishness, describing how Xiao Liang and the others played with him.
"Play my foot!" Zhao Yayuan threatened, "We are leaving tonight."
Zhao Xiuyi pouted, to which Qiu Li chuckled, "If you want, you could stay here for a whole month."
"You are still too young," he said, patting Zhao Xiuyi's head gently, "You can't go up the mountain, only as far as the foothills at most. You must ask teacher Xiao Tao to accompany you all tomorrow."
Xiao Tao, who grew up in Nan Qiao, had become a primary school teacher. She was an old acquaintance of Qiu Li and it was she who had taken care of Zhao Xiuyi today.
Zhao Xiuyi wasn't an unreasonable child; knowing he could continue playing with Xiao Liang tomorrow satisfied him. He was genuinely exhausted, and soon after lying down, he fell asleep.
Zhao Yayuan slumped on the sofa, "I'm exhausted. Why are children so troublesome?"
"I now understand why they chose not to have kids," he grunted, "If that Qin person had a child, it would probably turn the world upside down. He doesn't take care of children, Lu Nian would be driven insane."
Qiu Li silently smiled, "That may not necessarily be the case."
"By the way, where is Lu Nian?"
"She's on a call with him."
"Tsk," was all Zhao Yayuan uttered, expressing a syllable of disapproval.
Roughly half an hour later, Lu Nian returned, "Has Xiuyi gone to sleep?" she asked softly, looking around.
"He's asleep."
The climate in Nan Qiao was very pleasant. In the small yard of Qiu Lan's home stood a plum tree that Qiu Li had planted when he was a teenager. During the fruit-bearing season in summer, Qiu Li picked a few plums, chilled them with well water, and served them to enjoy.
Lu Nian was quite curious, having no experience living in the countryside. She took a bite and found the icy and crisp texture extraordinarily delicious.
Nan Qiao is indeed an excellent place to escape the summer heat.
Zhao Yayuan commented, "I don't have much going on at the company recently, and the kid likes it here. I plan to let him stay here for an extended period."
Lu Nian responded, "Hmm, in that case, I will leave the day after tomorrow."
The night breeze blew, making the bamboo chair feel warm and refreshing. She lay on it, feeling quite content and at ease.
It's a pity that Qin Si is not here.
She pondered.
……
The next morning, after breakfast outside, Lu Nian sent a message to Qin Si on WeChat, informing him that she would return the day after tomorrow, and the flight had already been booked.
His response came swiftly, "Cancel the ticket."
Lu Nian, "?"
Was he annoyed that she was coming back too late?
Across the table, Zhao Yayuan suddenly stiffened, and Qiu Li also halted his chopsticks, his expression difficult to describe.
Lu Nian was baffled, "What's the matter?"
She also turned around, following their line of sight, and her almond eyes widened in surprise, exclaiming, "How come you are here?"
A young man stood not far away, with a tall and slender figure. As usual, he was dressed in dark colors, with black hair and fair skin, his features clean-cut. In the bustling crowd of Nan Qiao, he stood out distinctly.
"I finished my business yesterday," Qin Si said.
"I was thinking yesterday that it was a pity you couldn't come. Have you had breakfast?" Lu Nian chattered away.
She asked the owner to add another bowl of noodles.
Nan Qiao was currently pursuing a path of boutique tourism development, having made many improvements compared to before. The roadside breakfast stalls also had greatly improved their offerings compared to the flavors they experienced many years ago when they first visited together.
Zhao Xiuyi had been dining with them originally. Halfway through, he met some friends he had played with yesterday. Unable to resist, he quickly finished his meal and rejoined them. Now returning from play, his little friends had taught him to make a small flower crown from grass, which he intended to give to Lu Nian.
However, halfway back, he suddenly noticed an additional person at the table.
Zhao Xiuyi, "......"
Recognizing the newcomer's face, the little boy instantly withdrew his hand behind his back, becoming silent and shrinking behind Zhao Yayuan.
Of the four of them, he naturally favored his own uncle, Zhao Yayuan the most. While he was also quite close to Lu Nian and Qiu Li, he was particularly wary of Qin Si.
Qin Si didn't have much affinity with children.
His personality was simply too cold. Although he had never spoken harshly to Zhao Xiuyi, compared to Zhao Yayuan who often threatened to beat him, Zhao Xiuyi was much more fearful of him.
Zhao Yayuan chuckled softly.
He put down his chopsticks and pinched his chubby face, commenting, "You're so timid."
After finishing their meal, she sought Qin Si's opinion, "Since you are here, shall we stay here for a few more days?"
Coincidentally, her latest comic series had just concluded, and she was preparing to plan a new series.
The picturesque landscapes and tranquil pastoral life of Nan Qiao seemed to be stirring her inspiration.
She wanted to explore a few more places in Nan Qiao, create some sketches, and gather inspiration.
Qin Si had no objections, in fact, for him, any place was just as good, as long as he was with her.
"By the way, where are you staying?" Lu Nian asked.
"We don't have much space left where we are staying, it can't accommodate you," Zhao Yayuan said with a touch of schadenfreude, "We are already packed like sardines."
The small courtyard left by Qiu Lan had already been expanded once, but there were still not many rooms. Now with Zhao Xiuyi also joining, it felt even more cramped.
"Given the cramped situation, are you telling me you can't even afford a night in a hotel?" Qin Si said, his tone indifferent.
Nowadays, the streets of Nan Qiao are flooded with guesthouses,
Zhao Yayuan, "..." He was left speechless.
What he hated most about Qin Si was this unchanging venomous tongue. Qin Si rarely spoke, but when he didn't intend to let you be comfortable, every word he uttered could infuriate you to no end.
Lu Nian sighed.
Qiu Li continued with his meal.
They had all grown accustomed to this.
Lu Nian returned to pack her belongings; since Qin Si had arrived, she naturally intended to stay with him.
The guesthouse they chose was quite clean and elegant.
The receptionist was a young girl dressed in a green cloth robe. As Qin Si registered, she sneaked glances at him while writing.
Compared to his youthful days where he held a hint of naive stubbornness, he had become more mature and restrained over the years, exuding a different charm that was even more captivating than in his youth.
Lu Nian, originally seated in the lobby, observed this scene with a slight curve of her lips.
At this moment, the back door opened, and a person entered with a booming voice, "Xing Xing, where did you put the plum wine that was brewed earlier?"
It was a chubby, middle-aged man, apparently the owner, dressed in a white robe, his plump figure accompanied by a radiant smile. Seeing Qin Si, his gaze paused momentarily before he slapped his belly with a palm-leaf fan.
"Ah, you're back again? I remember you visited us a few times before with your girlfriend. She didn't come with you this time?"
Lu Nian also recognized the plump owner, standing up to greet him.
"She's my wife now," Qin Si stated.
The owner was quite elated, feeling as if he had witnessed a love relay. In the past, the tourism industry in Nan Qiao was sparse, and his inn had few visitors throughout the entire summer, so his memory of the beautiful young couple was especially vivid.
Now in a blink of an eye, so many years had passed, his inn was thriving day by day, and they had even gotten married.
"I'll give you a fifty percent discount on the room rate," the chubby owner said with a hearty laugh. "Xingxing, take note of it."
The girl named Xingxing seemed slightly stunned and quickly acknowledged his words. However, for a moment, her disappointed gaze couldn't be concealed.
Qin Si carried all their luggage upstairs.
Almost done arranging the room, Lu Nian leaned on her hand, watching him, suddenly blinked, her expression quite mischievous.
Having lived together for some time now, he had gained some experience.
Seeing her in this mood, he instinctively felt that something was amiss.
...It was generally a prelude to her finding various ways to tease him.
"The young girl downstairs, do you find her attractive?" she asked leisurely, as expected.
Qin Si paused for a moment.
He hadn't paid any attention to what the 'young girl' she was referring to looked like, so naturally, he couldn't comment on her attractiveness.
He was not one to utter sweet nothings, nor did he know how to deliberately please the one he liked with words, and even now, he remained the same.
"I saw you two exchanging glances," Lu Nian said languidly, "she must be quite pretty, right?"
Qin Si, "..."
He fell silent.
He embraced her and kissed her cheek softly, a gentle, silent peace offering.
Lu Nian wrapped her arms around his slim waist, smiling tenderly, her fingers tracing light patterns on him. It had become customary for them to treat each other this way. He lowered his head, his breath slightly uneven, seeking her lips.
Though it hadn't been long since they last met,
Recently, due to work commitments, both had been busy, and their intimate moments were scarce, which is why Lu Nian had thought of going on a vacation together.
Now, through an unexpected turn of events, they were traveling together, in a sense.
She lay there languidly, suddenly leaning over to kiss him, "How did it get so late?" she muttered.
"I'll go and keep Qiu Li company in a while," she turned over, "I have been quite worried about him these days, afraid that he won't be able to handle it."
Qiu Li was emotional, and he owed much to Qiu Lan for taking him in and raising him. Although it was inevitable given Qiu Lan's age, and she had lived a good, long life, Lu Nian couldn't help but worry.
He wrapped his arms around her, not discouraging her from going, only remarking, "You worry too much."
Qiu Li was already a grown man, and Qiu Lan's passing was not abrupt. She had been frail for a long time, and the doctors had hinted many times that her living up to this point was a miracle. Qiu Li had had ample time to mentally prepare.
He didn't find Qiu Li as fragile as she perceived him to be.
Lu Nian, herself not in the best of health, did not want her to accompany Qiu Li and get too immersed in the sorrow.
Qin Si was such a person; aside from matters concerning her, he seemed to be indifferent to everything else.
In other matters, his approach to thinking was always characterized by reason far outweighing emotion.
Lu Nian had somewhat grown accustomed to this trait of his.
In the afternoon, she visited Qiu Li, who seemed to be relatively stable emotionally.
Zhao Ya Yuan and Zhao Xiu Yi were also present, along with a group of young friends who were attracted to come and play. The yard was filled with laughter and merriment. Qiu Li, familiar with the flora around and possessing a gentle nature, was particularly popular with the children.
Zhao Ya Yuan enjoyed the peace, inherently lazy as he was. Currently sprawled on a chair playing with his phone, he only lazily lifted his eyes upon their entrance. Seeing the tall figure standing at the courtyard gate, he tugged at the corner of his lips in a smirk, said nothing, and slumped back into his relaxed position.
After dinner, Lu Nian said, "I'll leave first then, I'll come back tomorrow morning."
Qiu Li responded, "Mmm."
"I'm fine," he said with a faint smile, "Don't worry too much about me."
Looking forward, there are countless tomorrows to come.
The evening breeze was quite pleasant. Lu Nian and Qin Si walked side by side on the street, with lanterns gradually lighting up one after another. Stalls were being set up, selling food and toys. The night turned into day, with children chasing each other and laughing as they passed by, and distant mountains rolling endlessly in the background.
Dusk was a very special moment in time.
In the distance, a streak of sunset lingered, seemingly surreal.
She didn't know if it was the influence of the atmosphere or the recent events concerning Qiu Lan that stirred her emotions.
Lu Nian suddenly asked, "Tell me, what if, in the future, I die before you, what will you do?"
Given her underlying health issues, dying before him in the future would be nothing out of the ordinary.
She gently scratched his palm.
In the past, she seemed to have discussed this issue with him, but it was merely to tease him with absurdities. Back then, his expression was particularly terrifying, and Lu Nian dared not provoke him further, quickly dropping the subject.
He tightly clasped her small hand, bringing it into his palm.
The man's profile, partially obscured in the night, bore particularly handsome lines. This time, contrary to her expectations, he did not exhibit the kind of expression he had in his youth.
Instead, he was quite calm.
Now, Lu Nian was the one who was upset, saying, "Why are you like this?"
Stupid man.
Before, when she hadn't yet fallen into his grasp, he cherished her and couldn't bear the thought of her dying. Now that he has her, now that they are married and legitimate, does he no longer cherish her?
She huffed in annoyance, attempting to shake off his hand but failing, as he held her tightly.
Upon seeing his demeanor, Lu Nian froze.
In the dimming glow of the sunset, his expression held a strand of secretive gentleness that she rarely witnessed, or rather, had never seen this man exhibit since the first time they met until now.
He didn't let go of her hand, their fingers entwined. He leaned down, brushing her lips gently, and beside her ear, Lu Nian heard those four words carried by the evening breeze, cold yet tender.
Together in life and death.
They would never part again.
