Chapter 88: Stepping on Faces
byChapter 88: Stepping on the Face
Wen Ying sat by the window, idly staring out with his fingers loosely resting on the edge of the table. After a while, he stood up and left the fast-food restaurant.
Perseus noticed that Wen Ying didn't head for the tall building but instead turned towards a dark alley by the street with a trash bin. It was deserted, and there were no surveillance cameras. Wen Ying put Perseus down on the ground from his shoulder.
"What are you doing?"
"Help me out," Wen Ying said before transforming back into his original form.
His body had already reached maturity, allowing him to easily transform back into his mirror form. It was a bright, oval-shaped mirror with a silver rim, and the silver-gray magical patterns on it glimmered faintly in the darkness. The light path inside the mirror swirled on its own.
The silver magic mirror hovered half a meter above the ground. Perseus watched as the mirror shrank from the size of a person to a much smaller one, losing its magnificent luster and becoming an ordinary, unassuming little mirror found in the human world.
Just as Wen Ying was about to speak, a dog's paw kicked him to the ground. The small mirror, which had been floating upright, now lay flat on the ground with the reflective surface facing up. A dog's paw was pressed against the mirror.
Feeling a chill beneath his paw, Perseus found it rather uncomfortable. Instead of retracting his paw, he stepped on it with his other front paw.
Wen Ying was displeased. "Perseus, this is my face."
Boros, upon hearing this, stomped his paws three or four times, his chin pointing at Wen Ying as he lazily said, "Well, what did you want me to do just now?"
Wen Ying replied, "…Carry me to the sixth floor office of that building we visited during the day. Sneak in through the window with me in your mouth and place me on any desk with a good view."
Boros opened his mouth, clamping down on half of the mirror, and dashed out of the alley towards the Six Peace Building.
Few people would pay attention to an ordinary dog the size of a Pomeranian. Boros ran to the back of the Six Peace Building where it was darker. With a powerful leap from his hind legs, he jumped two stories high, then landed on an air conditioning unit outside a window. In three quick movements, he reached the sixth-floor window and peered inside from the side.
Most of the people Wen Ying had seen during the day were still there, not having left.
Boros shook his head, throwing the small mirror onto an empty desk. He then lay down on top of the air conditioner, closing his eyes and deciding not to move.
Although Boros seemed to have tossed the mirror casually, it landed without making a sound. Wen Ying landed silently on the desk.
Looking at the wall-mounted perpetual calendar, Wen Ying noted that it was ten-thirty.
Most of the sounds in the office were the tapping of keyboards, creating an oppressive atmosphere.
At eleven, Wen Ying saw the door to the inner room open. The unscrupulous boss, Wu Fei, emerged, seemingly preparing to leave. Just as the man took three or four steps out, all the lights in the office suddenly went out, plunging the surroundings into darkness.
Outside the window was a bustling street, usually illuminated by shop lights, street lamps, and car headlights. Yet, strangely, it seemed to be blocked by an unseen barrier.
Wen Ying was still trying to comprehend the situation when a shrill tenor made him shudder, causing the mirror to rattle. The voice was so high-pitched that it seemed to pierce through the sky.
In the darkness, the aura of a low-level demon lingered.
This darkness was fleeting, and soon the light from outside the window seeped in. Wen Ying realized that the office was now left with the unscrupulous boss alone; the ordinary people had been escorted to the elevator corridor. The unconscious figures remaining in the office were mere illusions.
The unscrupulous boss rushed to the glass door, attempting to flee, but was startled by a floating skull, turning pale as he let out another piercing soprano cry. He scrambled back into his office, rolling and crawling.
Screams soon echoed from within, and the boss frantically dashed out again. This repeated several times until Wen Ying heard faint laughter, distinct voices belonging to multiple individuals – some outside the window, others beyond the glass door of the office.
In the eerie, suffocating atmosphere, footsteps were particularly conspicuous. The approaching figure deliberately tapped, "Tap, tap, tap." The unscrupulous boss nearly had a panic attack. Trembling, he looked up and lunged forward, kneeling abruptly while grabbing the newcomer's thighs. He wept uncontrollably, smearing snot and tears onto the person's pants.
Wei Ranfeng: "… Boss Wang, please let go. It's hard for me to move with you holding on like this."
Boss Wang hastily released his grip, scrambling to hide behind Wei Ranfeng. Shaking with fear, he clutched at Wei Ranfeng's shirt hem and asked, quivering, "Master Wei, didn't you guys get rid of these things yesterday? Why are they back today? Do I need to relocate my company?"
Wei Ranfeng curved his lips, feigning a sigh. "I told you yesterday that no one should stay here during the night for a while. The presence of humans attracts these entities. This place needs to be empty at night for at least a month."
"I work for pay, and I handled the situation for you yesterday with great care. You didn't take my advice to heart, so tonight's incident has nothing to do with me – you can't blame me for it."
Boss Wang interrupted him hastily, "No blaming, no blaming! It's all my fault. Please resolve this issue promptly, and I'll continue to pay. Money is not an issue!"
The skeleton, a low-level demon, was originally released by Wei Ranfeng, while the other individuals in the office were accomplices who had been led away.
The low-level demon that was eliminated yesterday was lured here by the resentment in the vicinity. Wei Ranfeng had intended to teach this boss a lesson.
