Chapter 165: Morning
by 夜阑妖歌Chapter 165: Morning
At nine in the morning, the devils began to arrive at the sub-basement one after another.
Currently, my job is rather relaxed, mainly involving apprehending extremist elements. Not long after the final exams at the Lucifer Demon Academy's Class One, those associated with the extremist group have been keeping a low profile, leaving me with an abundance of free time lately.
"Deputy Judge?" The third-rank Enforcer, Yu Yao, who had been cold to Wen Ying that day, was startled to see Kirishino's haggard appearance the moment she entered.
Kirishino's face bore an exhausted look, with large dark circles beneath his eyes. He stared at the entrance with an indescribably odd gaze.
"Indeed," Kirishino acknowledged. "Did you happen to see the Chief Judge on your way here?"
Yu Yao shook his head.
Another Third-Class Judge, a female demon, inquired with a hint of confusion, "Is there something wrong with the Chief Judge?"
Kirishino's expression turned intricate. After a brief pause, she said, "It's nothing. I have an urgent matter to discuss with him."
The newly arrived demon suggested, "Why not call him?"
Not daring to risk the call being answered by that terrifying Mirror Demon, Kirishino naturally wouldn't admit his fear and casually replied, "I tried calling but didn't get an answer. He's probably still asleep. You guys go on with your work."
Kirishino walked out.
"One of the Deputy Judges seemed off today. His words were rather vague."
"Who knows?"
Kirishino made his way to the coffee shop on the first floor and found a window-side seat.
Behind the row of buildings was a residential area. Normally, they would enter and exit through a hidden passage within the neighborhood, rarely using the direct route through the coffee shop on the ground floor.
Sitting by the window, Kirishino gently pressed his temples.
After sneaking away last night, he hadn't dared to return to the scene to assess the situation. Instead, he went straight to Ye Wang's residence in Mu City. He had camped outside the door all night, confirming that Ye Wang had not returned.
The guy might have spent the entire night in that hotel room. As for the Mirror Demon, Kirishino found it deeply disturbing to ponder over.
Hopefully, Ye Wang hadn't undergone any horrifying demonic experiments.
Despite their usual disagreements, Kirishino found himself unusually sympathetic toward the other at this moment.
Suddenly, Kirishino's pupils constricted, and his body stiffened as if he had lost all sense of his own existence.
Through the glass, he saw the figure of a Mirror Demon appearing at the end of the street. Slowly standing up, Kirishino prepared himself mentally.
Wen Ying entered the first floor with a pleasant mood, pushing the door open. Catching sight of Kirishino in the corner of his eye, he greeted him with a smile. "Good morning."
"Good morning," Kirishino paused, "Have you had breakfast? I forgot to mention yesterday that your accommodation expenses are covered by the company, so you didn't have to…" He tactfully hinted whether Wen Ying had stayed in that hotel room or left, which was crucial to understanding Ye Wang's situation.
"I didn't spend any extra money last night," Wen Ying replied, "I went to stay at a friend's house in the middle of the night." It was Yang Shiming's mansion, where he kept his lover, and conveniently, it was empty.
"In the middle of the night, huh…" Kirishino's smile appeared slightly strained as he followed Wen Ying down to the B2 level.
Wen Ying had done something last night that was in line with his inner instincts. He realized that the more he resisted, the more agitated he became; following his heart, on the other hand, brought a sense of peace and contentment.
The silver-white branches were perfect for use as experimental aids, and Wen Ying had used them to clarify several issues with the magical potions he had created the previous night.
"Oh, right," Wen Ying turned his head, "He probably won't be coming today. He's resting at the hotel."
Kirishino: "...Very well."
As the two demons conversed, they had already reached the second sub-level. Suddenly, a robust figure approached, casting a shadow that enveloped Wen Ying entirely.
"Deputy Judge, is this the notorious Mirror Demon that descended from above? It's my first time laying eyes on such a mythical devil," a sardonic voice, laced with malevolence, grew increasingly sarcastic as the speaker leaned in closer. "I've heard they're even more useless than us demons born in the human realm."
beads of sweat cascaded down Kirishino's forehead, his lips trembled as he frantically signaled with his eyes for the Second-Class Enforcer not to speak out of turn.
Noticing Kirishino's winking expression, the other party assumed it was a subtle hint for an even more intimidating gesture. Thus, he raised his hand and forcefully slapped down, intending to press firmly on the slender demon's shoulder, hoping to make him kneel instantly.
Wen Ying seized the hand pressing down on him, hooking his foot around the other's knee. With a swift exertion, he pulled the other towards himself. The pressure on the bend of the knee caused the person to stumble forward and kneel with a thud.
