Chapter 169: Arrival
by 夜阑妖歌Chapter 169: Arrival
After Wen Ying had received the Demon King's order for a while, it was nearing the Spring Festival in Huaxia. Businesses were already starting to hype up the celebrations, and when he entered the supermarket, red festive couplets and "Fu" characters adorned the walls, accompanied by lively music.
The domestic security was quite good, unlike abroad where the extremist faction of lower demons from the Demon Realm were causing chaos. There would be unrest one day and an explosion the next, resulting in fewer people seen on the streets.
Upon realizing that the Disaster Prevention Department had started investigating the cards and novel, Wen Ying instructed his subordinates to cease the activity. Now that they had already spread widely enough, all that was left was to wait for the Demon King's next command.
Wen Ying didn't have much experience in leadership, so out of caution, he refrained from making any bold moves, fearing that even the slightest misstep could cause a significant breach of duty - a metaphorical butterfly flapping its wings and causing a typhoon.
In other words, he was slacking off.
Given the intimidating impression he had made earlier, the current Chief Justice, Ye Wang, didn't dare assign Wen Ying with tasks that required much effort. Other demons, hearing about this through the grapevine, also avoided bothering Wen Ying. As a result, he was currently very idle, spending his days playing demon-themed mobile games, eating, sleeping, and cultivating. Occasionally, he would study what a Chief Justice should do or review reports submitted by subordinates at Ye Wang's office.
It wasn't until the number of powerful exorcists in Mu City started increasing, and they had settled in and begun their search, that Wen Ying took notice.
On this particular day, Wen Ying woke up as usual in his dormitory on the fourth floor. After getting out of bed, he went to stand by the window and admire the view. As he looked out, he noticed a group of exorcists walking down the street directly ahead.
Watching them for a moment in curiosity, the team of exorcists marched straight forward, reaching a traffic intersection below. After the green light turned on, they continued their journey...
The target is this corner building? ! Wen Ying instantly snapped out of his daze, all sleepiness vanishing. He paused for a moment, then promptly put on his glasses, mask, and baseball cap before stepping out the door.
Contrary to his imagination where the team of exorcists would barge into the first floor, shouting "Ordinary people, get out now! There's a demon here," there was no commotion downstairs. The atmosphere was relaxed, with the soft melody of music slowing down the passage of time in the first-floor café.
Wen Ying descended to the first floor and observed the situation. The team of exorcists were seated in a corner of the shop, even ordering their meals. One of them was even chatting and laughing with a girl from the staff.
Stopping in his tracks, Wen Ying took a seat three tables away from them, positioning himself sideways to them.
Spotting Wen Ying, the girl who had just taken the exorcists' order approached him directly and greeted warmly, "You're here quite early today. What would you like to have?"
To enhance the ambiance of the ground floor café, there were two ordering methods: one was scanning a code for the menu, and the other was to call for a server with a physical menu book.
Wen Ying assumed that they might be assessing whether the employee was demonic or not. As the girl approached, he pondered over their possible thoughts.
"I'll have the sandwich and soy milk again," Wen Ying said at a normal volume, then lowered his voice to inquire, "Did they ask you any odd questions?"
The girl recalled with a thoughtful expression, "Not really anything peculiar. They just asked me how popular this place is and what the boss is like."
Indeed, they were here to investigate. Wen Ying smiled and dismissed his staff, supporting his chin with both hands as he subtly observed the group at the table.
They weren't dressed in Disaster Department uniforms and didn't carry any tools that resembled exorcist weapons. They looked like ordinary people, but honestly, with their demeanor and a few clearly well-trained individuals sitting straight, ready to act at any moment, did they take him for a blind man?
Wen Ying sent a message to Kirishino.
Before he could do so, he noticed a call from the Demon King. Startled, he glanced at the exorcists ahead and had a strange, foreboding feeling. As his phone rang persistently, Wen Ying reluctantly answered it while walking towards the restroom.
As soon as the call connected, the Demon King got straight to the point, "Wen Ying, it's about time to initiate the second phase of our plan."
