Chapter 171: Envelope
by 夜阑妖歌Chapter 171: Envelope
On his way from the restroom to his seat, Wen Ying thought of several ways to approach the situation. However, after estimating the probabilities, it was likely that they would end up fighting. If he wasn't discovered here, he could drag things out slowly. After all, there were still about a month before the start of the next semester. The devil's move forced him to act.
What a calamity.
Wen Ying took out his phone and sent a message to Ye Wang. What did the exorcist's current Chief Justice have to do with him, an intern? He wasn't even officially part of the organization yet; at most, he was just a temporary worker.
When Ye Wang, who was leisurely leaving his residence, saw the text, he was startled: "???"
Wen Ying put down his phone and calmly ate breakfast.
His behavior of wearing sunglasses and a hat in the store attracted the attention of the exorcists. A few of them watched as Wen Ying finished his meal and left, exchanging glances. One of them got up from his seat and followed Wen Ying out.
After a while, this person returned with a slightly focused expression. "Lost him."
"Lost him?" Chang Ningsheng, the cold-looking youth with braids, sounded surprised. He looked at the spot where the other person had been sitting.
"From the looks of it, that person might be a devil. The intelligence report said that devils working for the Court of Judgment can use enchanted items to disguise themselves as humans, and their disguises are highly convincing. I didn't expect even me to not recognize him."
Chang Ningsheng tapped his finger on the table. "The higher the rank, the more enchanted items one possesses, making it harder to discern their disguise."
The people around them reacted. "That demon must hold a high position in their hierarchy!"
The waitress who had taken their order suddenly placed an envelope on their table. Everyone looked at her as she said, "Someone outside just asked me to give this letter to you. Is it for you guys?"
Considering that they hadn't been able to identify the cap-wearing young man who had left as a demon earlier, the exorcists now regarded the girl with suspicion and scrutiny. The girl couldn't help but raise her hand and wipe her face with the back of it under their gaze.
"Did something get on my face?"
Chang Ningsheng replied, "No, it's just that you resemble someone we know, so everyone couldn't help but take a few more glances."
The guy was incredibly handsome, and the working girl couldn't resist stealing a few more peeks, her voice softening as she said, "I see. As long as the letter is meant for you two, then I didn't give it to the wrong person." With that, the working girl reluctantly left, basking in the sight of male beauty for a while longer, which lifted her spirits for the rest of her workday.
Hardly had the working girl left when a muscular exorcist eagerly reached out to touch the envelope and open it.
"Wei Zheng, you should check for any issues first, don't put your teammates in danger," Tan Qingqing, the girl seated beside him, promptly intercepted his action with quick reflexes, snatching the envelope away.
Wei Zheng shrugged and muttered under his breath, "There can't be traps in every single thing."
"Seems like you've forgotten the last time you carelessly opened an unknown box and ended up poisoned," Tan Qingqing scolded promptly. "And you infected us too. If not for my strength, we'd all be done for."
"That was indeed a close call."
"It's best to examine this envelope properly."
The other two exorcists nodded in agreement.
Wei Zheng whispered softly, "Your temperament isn't suited for that dress you're wearing."
Chang Ningsheng took the envelope and, under the watchful eyes of the other four, carefully inspected it before slowly opening it. He pulled out a sheet of paper that had been printed.
Upon noticing the intensity in Chang Ningsheng's gaze, the quartet immediately leaned in.
"What does it say?"
"Is it a provocation?"
With their heads gathered closely, Chang Ningsheng's brows twitched slightly. Pushing them away, he passed the letter around and asked, "What do you make of it?"
The four of them exchanged peculiar looks after reading the letters.
Wei Zheng straightforwardly stated, "I think it's a trap. We've been dealing with those demons for years. Don't we know their tricks by now?"
"Maybe not," Tan Qingqing hesitated. "With the extremist faction being so active in the human world, it's not impossible that those demons from the demon realm would seek our help to deal with them. Yang Ying, what do you think?"
Opposite her, Yang Ying sat with her hair tied up in a high ponytail, exuding an icy demeanor. She lowered her eyes and said, "Those cards might have been intended for this moment."
Chang Ningsheng tapped his fingers lightly on the table. "So you're saying that these cards were meant to prevent the extremist faction from realizing that the demons sought us out deliberately? If the cards weren't made by the extremists, then in their eyes, we'd be the ones causing trouble for the Demon Realm's Judgment Bureau."
Wei Zheng's big eyes filled with doubt as he turned to the youth beside him, who looked inherently righteous. "Do demons also engage in such devious schemes against each other?"
This person didn't look at him with the condescending gaze one might give to an idiot but replied earnestly, "Of course they do. Demons aren't much different from humans."
As they discussed inside, Wen Ying returned to the first floor through a back alley in the neighborhood and then descended to the basement level two.
Ever since that night with Wen Ying, Ye Wang's eyes had been clear whenever he was around him. However, he was now restless due to Wen Ying's words.
"Are we really going to cooperate with those exorcists?"
Wen Ying corrected him, "The correct phrase is to cooperate with the Disaster Department, under this demon lord's command."
"But…" Ye Wang dared not comment on how unrealistic the demon lord's order was, "The chances of them agreeing to let demons study in their school are slim, right?"
Looking at him, Wen Ying said, "Just understand one thing, if I don't fulfill the demon lord's command, I'll be in trouble. If I'm in trouble, I won't be in a good mood, and if I'm not in a good mood, you'll end up—"
"Guaranteed to complete the mission!" Ye Wang shuddered, a shadow looming over his heart. His body instinctively trembled as he blurted out, interrupting Wen Ying.
Checking the time, it was about right. Wen Ying looked at his phone, then stood up, enveloping himself in a layer of black mist with practiced ease.
Kirishino issued orders to the demons on the second basement floor.
Chang Ningsheng and the other four followed the method outlined in the envelope to enter the second basement level.
After passing through the wall, their hearts raced, and they remained on high alert.
On the other side, there were no ambushes. Only one demon stood in the corridor, maintaining a safe and friendly distance from the newcomers.
"A demon..."
"Where's your boss?" Wei Zheng scanned the area, spotting only one demon and addressing it.
"Please follow me." The guiding demon was San Lin, who had escorted Wen Ying earlier. In contrast to his previous arrogance when he led Wen Ying in, San Lin now behaved subdued and quiet as he accompanied these exorcists.
The atmosphere was intensely oppressive, and these exorcists were no pushovers. beads of cold sweat trickled down San Lin's back; if he were to confront them, he would be doomed.
Fortunately, there were other demons from the Realm of Demons present, which deterred San Lin from fleeing. He suppressed the frantic urge to escape, enduring the chaos in his mind, and led the five exorcists to the office of the Supreme Judge.
As Chang Ningsheng and the others walked along, they were surprised to find that the place indeed resembled an office. They sensed numerous hidden demons here, suggesting that this was likely their main base.
San Lin knocked on the door, attempting to sound calm, though his knuckles trembled slightly. "My lord, they have arrived."
"Enter," came Ye Wang's voice. San Lin turned the doorknob and pushed the door open. Upon entering, he felt the deliberately unleashed power and aura of his superior, which clashed with the energy of the five exorcists outside. Sandwiched between them, San Lin experienced a stark contrast of extremes.
Struggling to maintain his footing, he squeezed himself into the office, avoiding being at the center.
Chang Ningsheng surveyed the room. Its style appeared ordinary, but it seemed more casual than a typical office. Including the demon who had led them in, there were four demons in total.
Unconsciously, Chang Ningsheng's gaze fell upon the dark, demonic figure that vaguely resembled a human.
