Chapter 238 - Breaking the Formation

Lan Jiaying leaned on Wen Ying's shoulder with one hand, bending his waist slightly as he croaked, "What’s wrong with you?"

Before Wen Ying could reply, he gritted his teeth and said, "Get rid of that blond one."

Wen Ying turned his head to look at Hai Lige, who was staring at him in bewilderment.

Wen Ying was contemplating his next move. He had made a mistake; he hadn't expected to be the only one to enter. He was concerned that if he killed someone, it would make headlines, and others might see Wen Ying's indifference. What mattered to Wen Ying was how his parents would feel.

That was why he didn't act immediately.

Hai Lige's voice brimmed with anger. "Wen Jing, are you going to help this demon who has taken innocent lives? Can you live with yourself? I always thought you had a clear sense of right and wrong. You don't seem like a demon at all, do you?"

Wen Ying's heart skipped a beat, almost believing that his mixed human-demon heritage and his upbringing as a human had been exposed. On second thought, it seemed that his secret was still safe.

Looking at the demons outside the barrier with their complicated expressions, Wen Ying wondered if Hai Lige genuinely believed what he was saying or was trying to sow discord.

Lan Jiaying's weight increasingly leaned on Wen Ying, and Wen Ying supported him, clearly sensing that the other's physical condition was terrible. The barrier contained law powers that not only suppressed Lan Jiaying's strength but also hindered the demon's formidable self-healing ability.

Lan Jiaying's skin was bleeding from every inch of his body, and the situation inside was dire.

As Wen Ying supported him, he felt through the clothes a hard, layered substance that resembled scales.

There was no time for hesitation; any more delay would result in irreparable damage to Lan Jiaying.

Wen Ying's clear eyes turned cold as he made his decision. The white platinum ring on his tail glimmered, and a multitude of magic cards fell around him like snowflakes.

When his mirror clone had reached his original position underwater, he had made it vanish, swiftly transferring the contents of the enchanted items replicated by the Magic Mirror into their genuine counterparts.

Suddenly, Lan Jiaying's grip strengthened, and with a weak but determined voice, he gasped, "Remove this... damn law... I'll kill that person myself... cough, cough..."

Truly a stubborn soul, Wen Ying's lips twitched. "You should save your breath for now."

Hai Lige, seeing Wen Ying's dismissive attitude, silently clenched his fists, his face stern. "Since you insist on aiding a demonic murderer, I won't hold back anymore!"

Lena was somewhat worried. The demon from the Magic Mirror seemed unaffected by the descending law, and as the first-place contestant, not much weaker. Would Hai Lige, in his divine descent state, be able to defeat him?

Though Hai Lige appeared invincible at the moment, his current strength mainly relied on the law's constraint on demons. The power he gained was specifically tailored against them.

That was why Hai Lige could act like a deity, effortlessly subduing the demonic prince of the Realm of Devils with a mere gesture.

The laws had yet to fully awaken, limiting the power they could borrow.

But as long as Lan Jiaying was killed and the demons were enraged enough to wreak havoc in the human world, the laws would awaken significantly. Not only would their available power increase, but angels would also be dispatched by the laws to suppress the demons in the human realm.

Only then would the angel's promise to them come true.

One of their plans had been such, but now it was out of control. The artifact given to them by the Pope, which was supposed to invoke the laws, proved almost ineffective against the Mirror Demon.

This Mirror Demon indeed belonged to the lineage recorded in history. In the Church's confidential archives, it was documented that thousands of years ago, an angel fell in love with a Mirror Demon. Miraculously, they gave birth to a child, half-human and half-demon, or rather, half-angel and half-demon.

The sudden power surge of this Mirror Demon lineage in history was due to this. After several generations, their strength returned to the level of their fellow demons.

Though not manifesting, the power of an angel slumbered within the bodies of this Mirror Demon lineage, along with fragments of the law.

Back then, almost no one knew about this, let alone thousands of years later. Very few people in the Church had read that secret journal, and even those who did harbored doubts about the authenticity of the record.

The notion that an angel and a demon could produce offspring was absurd, akin to humans being able to breathe underwater.

Initially skeptical, the Pope received an angelic oracle that validated the authenticity of this record.

Within Wen Jing's body lies a fragment of a law. As long as they extract it and implant it into an angelically cultivated vessel, even without the demonic invasion, the angels could bypass the constraints of the law and descend into their prepared body.

Their initial purpose for coming to the Flower Planting Kingdom was solely to capture the Demon Mirror. However, many high-ranking figures within the Church couldn't afford to wait for the angels to fulfill their promise; they desperately needed the potent blood of demons to prolong their lives.

    Thus, they made contingency plans.

"Andre softly reprimanded Lena, noticing her unsettled demeanor, "Don't let your focus waver!"

    Lena: "I'm sorry..."

She knew all these insider details because she was born into one of the oldest exorcist families in Aceford. One of her ancestors, a patriarch, had been among those seeking to prolong their life with the power of a mighty demon's blood. He was the cornerstone of their family, and without him, they would lose a crucial trump card.

While Lena was lost in thought, Wen Ying had already engaged Hai Lige in combat.

Wen Ying placed Lan Jiaying amidst layers of entwined vines before turning to face Hai Lige.

Lan Jiaying, stubborn as always, insisted on leaving a gap to observe the situation outside. With his weakened voice, he repeatedly tried to assert to Wen Ying that he wanted to be the one to kill Hai Lige.

Wen Ying left him with a few cards for emergency healing and then fully devoted himself to the battle.

Hai Lige remained motionless within the pillar of light. He softly chanted, and numerous dazzling energy spheres appeared around him, like miniature suns. Wen Ying narrowed his eyes slightly and waved his hand, summoning several Fire-type Incineration spell cards.

The Incineration, in the form of a three-headed hound, raced through the air like a massive tidal wave.

The orbs drifted out, stretching into a web of light in front of Hai Lige and Acefa's group, blocking all the Incinerations.

Then, the light web turned towards Wen Ying. Its vast expanse made it almost impossible for Wen Ying to see anything beyond it.

A few spell cards landed on the ground, and instantly, a dense thicket sprang up from the earth, firmly holding back the descending web. Silver-white branches sprang from Wen Ying's shadow, slashing through the golden net.

In the next second, countless emerald green giant vines emerged from within the thorns, swooping towards those holding the divine stones, led by Acefa.

The spheres of light around Hai Lige transformed into another light web, but to everyone's surprise, the seemingly vine-like objects suddenly opened their mouths and began tearing at the web.

Wherever the green serpents bit, a dark green hue spread, rapidly corroding the light web.

As soon as a gap was torn open by the green snakes, one would seize the opportunity to slither through the hole.

Lena's expression shifted. Standing at the forefront, she was about to be engulfed by the open maw of the green snake.

"Don't move," Andre advised. "Hailige will provide defense!"

Hailige immediately activated a sphere of light for defense, and his transparent wings shed golden shimmering spots. The golden radiance danced among the green snakes, causing them to dissipate like they were being corroded.

Wen Ying furrowed his brows slightly. His magic wasn't as effective in the human realm; it was too suppressed. Breaking the formation took longer than anticipated. Glancing at Lan Jiaying, hidden amidst layers of vines, he knew her condition needed urgent treatment.

From his platinum ring, Wen Ying retrieved a silver-white enchanted weapon and flicked out its blade. Swiftly, the magic rushed towards Lena.

He had noticed earlier that this girl's emotions were more unstable than the others. In panic, people tended to lose their composure.

Hailige lowered his gaze. "You don't understand. As a demon, there's no way you can defeat me in a domain where the law prevails."

Wen Ying nonchalantly acknowledged with a "hum" and rapidly closed in on Lena, who bit her lip slightly.

The light orb flew into Wen Ying's path, and he threw out a few magic cards. When the two power sources collided, a barrage of explosions echoed like fireworks, creating a cloud of dust that reduced visibility.

Outside, the spectators watched the battle with tense emotions. At this point, it was impossible to ask them to stop and negotiate a truce. What Azef did to Lan Jiaying could not be reconciled.

The people from the Flower Planting Country suddenly felt a sense of relief that the barrier had kept them out. If they had stood by and watched without helping their fellow Asaphites, public opinion would have turned against them.

How could they explain that they didn't intervene because they believed Lan Jiaying hadn't killed anyone and suspected it was an Asaphite conspiracy? They had no evidence to support their claim.

Yan Liwen discussed with some of the Disaster Relief Department's subordinates on what to do next, making decisions on the spot.

Wu Shaluo's attention had been fixed on Lan Jiaying, but after Wen Ying entered, his focus shifted to him. He exerted force throughout his body, clenching his fists tightly as if he wished to rush in and assist Wen Ying.

"There's something wrong over there!" "Hurry up!" "Faster!" "Behind, behind!"

Wu Shaluo muttered softly with excitement, his expression vivid. Suddenly, he realized Muershi was nowhere to be seen.

He had initially searched for Muershi casually, but when Wu Shaluo scanned their surroundings thoroughly without finding him, suspicion began to grow.

Upon closer inspection of the number of demons around, Wu Shaluo realized not only was Muershi missing, but also Bellos, Koroy, and Wei Er.

This combination of disappearances... It somehow felt like they were up to something.

Wu Shaluo regretted his oversight, wishing he had paid more attention to his surroundings earlier so that he could have followed them.

Inside the barrier, Wen Ying repeatedly challenged Lena's defenses. Eventually, he succeeded in displacing Vincen from his position beside her, severing the flow of magical energy. The light column dimmed instantly, and the illusory wings behind Hai Lige became even more ethereal, flickering like a faulty lamp.

"Vincen! Return to your spot!" Andre exclaimed in alarm.

    Wen Ying smiled. "Too late."

With the loss of the power of the Law, Hai Lige's strength visibly waned. The defensive light spheres destabilized, and Wen Ying swiftly broke through them. His blade sliced through each orb, causing them to explode one after another as he passed.

Wen Ying's silver hair danced in the wind as he moved gracefully and swiftly through the crowd, disrupting their positions. When he reached the last person, he infused his blade with magic and severed the divine stone from their grasp.

With one divine stone gone, the array dissipated entirely, and the barrier vanished.

Yan Liwen inwardly cursed the disappearance of the barrier, realizing that the pressure was now on their country's official exorcists!

After a moment of hesitation, Yan Liwen sighed helplessly and addressed those around him. "Prepare... to assist in holding them back."

"There are many demons around us."

"I feel like this is clearly the result of Asaph's own misdeeds."

"I agree. It's obvious now that they won't back down until one side is destroyed. There's no way we can stop them, right?"

    "..."

Amidst the hushed whispers around him, Yan Liwen listened intently, his brows knitted together. "There's no evidence, and the Asaph Academy is made up of humans."
