Chapter 257: Ten Years
by 夜阑妖歌Chapter 257: Ten Years
The next day happened to be Saturday, allowing Wen Ying's mirror image clone to pretend to stay in the dormitory the whole time.
Wen Ying returned to the Demon Realm and headed for the Devil King's castle in the capital. He waited in the reception room for the guards to inform the Devil King of his arrival.
The guard soon returned, leading Wen Ying to the Devil King's audience chamber.
Wen Ying had walked through this corridor several times. A red carpet stretched straight into the distance, while the walls on either side were adorned with European-style candles and portraits of famous demons. Occasionally, groups of lightly armored devils patrolled past.
In his heart, Wen Ying kept pondering whether the Devil King knew that he had inherited an angel's law fragment. It was a source of great turmoil for him.
The reason he had come to see the Devil King in person instead of just calling was to try and infer the Devil King's knowledge through his expression.
"Enter," the guard pushed open the grand, classical door.
After Wen Ying stepped inside, the door closed automatically.
The Devil King's audience chamber was simply decorated, with rows of bookshelves and display cabinets, along with some minimal decorations. The focal point was a rectangular table that could be seen immediately upon entering, as well as a portrait of the current Devil King hanging on the wall opposite the door. The young and handsome Devil King sat with dignity, his dark and profound eyes gazing at the incoming demon.
The long table was roughly ten meters in length. Wen Ying walked to the end of it and slightly bowed towards the Demon King, who sat at the head, saying politely, "Your Majesty, the Demon King."
The Demon King appeared aged at this moment, but he was still an attractive and handsome old man. He looked at Wen Ying and smiled, "I happened to be looking for you as well."
Wen Ying was confused, "Is there something you need from me?"
The Demon King tapped on the table with his fingers a few times. The sound of his nails hitting the heavy, high-quality wooden surface was rather crisp, resonating in Wen Ying's heart. His voice turned slightly deeper, "It seems like what you've called me for is not a small matter."
"The matter isn't big or small, it depends on who it involves," the Demon King chuckled, his light expression holding great implications, "You weren't prepared before, but you should be now."
Wen Ying rolled his eyes inwardly at the Demon King's pretentiousness. On the surface, he remained respectful, "I don't understand your meaning." This statement could refer to too many things. Could the Demon King be planning to blow up his identity? A hundred thoughts raced through his mind.
The Demon King said, "It seems like the human world's Church has found out about your identity. Are you going to let them expose you, or do you plan to reveal it yourself?"
Sure enough, the Demon King knew about his half-human, half-demon identity from the beginning. Wen Ying held back his urge to complain and replied, "That's precisely why I came to see you. I want to reveal my identity myself, choosing a time that would be beneficial to me."
"Is there nothing else?" The Demon King placed his hands together in front of him, sounding puzzled.
Wen Ying answered, "No, the discovery of the underground palace ruins made us aware of the existence of the angel, Wu Mixiu. I came to inquire about any adjustments to your future plans. I wish to coordinate with these plans and choose an opportune moment to disclose my identity."
The Demon King was in deep thought, occasionally casting an inquisitive gaze upon Wen Ying.
If not for the fact that he couldn't defeat the Demon King, Wen Ying would have really wanted to grab the collar of his robe and force him to speak plainly.
"The angel's plan, aside from its final stage, is beneficial for our occupation of the Human Realm," the Demon King said slowly, "Let's just pretend we don't know about it for now."
"W-What about later on?"
The Demon King replied, "There's something I've been pondering over for a long time. Now, I've made my decision."
Wen Ying's eyelids twitched inexplicably.
The Demon King stood up and walked over to Wen Ying with a smile. Despite being an old man, he was still taller than Wen Ying, casting a shadow over him that exerted an intimidating pressure.
"After some time, I wish to appoint you as the next Demon King."
Wen Ying's face froze in disbelief, "Are you joking?"
"No, I've thought this through for a long time," the Demon King chuckled, his slightly narrowed eyes hiding a sharp glint behind his smile, "You are the key to this plan. You need to become the nominal Demon King."
Wen Ying picked up on the key point – at least nominally.
He slightly lowered his head and couldn't help grinding his back teeth. This damn Devil King definitely knew that he had inherited an angel's fragment of the Law.
The Devil King seemed to be talking to himself: "It would take at least ten years."
Taking advantage of Wen Ying's confusion about the Law, they would recklessly expand their influence in the Human Realm until they controlled its vital sectors. By then, even if humans realized something was amiss, the demons would have already seized the initiative.
Wen Ying roughly guessed the Devil King's intentions, but he couldn't resist asking, "You know that I grew up in the Human Realm, right?"
The Devil King turned his gaze, his black eyes flashing with cruel coldness, "A demon's nature is to plunder and fight. Your blood carries the essence of a demon."
Overwhelmed by the Devil King's surging aura, Wen Ying felt a chill in his heart.
"The Law also knows that floods cannot be held back forever," the Devil King patted Wen Ying on the shoulder with a dangerous smile, "The Human Realm can't reject the Demon Realm indefinitely."
Seeing Wen Ying's silence, the Devil King laughed and said, "In ten years, I'll give you the position of the most powerful figure in the Human Realm."
Wen Ying: "Are you planning to give the position of Devil King to Lan Jiaying ten years from now?"
The Devil Emperor shrugged. "After all, I'm a responsible devil who doesn't wish to disappoint my son."
The Black Dragon Clan had held the position of Devil Emperor for a long time, and it was best if they continued to do so.
The Devil Emperor had deliberated for a long time over bestowing the title upon Wen Ying. If he didn't, the Law might strengthen the barrier or even awaken, summoning angels to descend upon them.
If Wen Ying were the Devil Emperor, as a hybrid well-liked by the Law, he would be enough to soothe the Law's concerns.
Wen Ying said, "A hundred years."
The Devil Emperor's gaze turned dangerous in an instant. The surging demonic power stirred up a fierce gale, causing decorations on the shelf beside him to clatter to the ground.
"I have no objections."
Wen Ying: "..." Your actions don't seem to suggest that.
The Devil Emperor spoke calmly, "But I don't know if the other high-ranking devils will have any objections. I can only keep them at bay for ten years. If you want a hundred years, you'll need to convince them with your own strength for the remaining ninety years."
Wen Ying paused, sensing something odd. By the end of those ten years, he would have fully integrated the power of the Law fragment inherited from the angel. His combat abilities would undoubtedly be extraordinary. Why would the Devil Emperor threaten him with this?
Does the Demon King not know that he inherited all the Law Fragments from the angel?
Wen Ying lowered his eyelids, concealing the shimmer of excitement and agitation in his eyes.
