Chapter 258: Scroll
by 夜阑妖歌Chapter 258: Scroll
Wen Ying's mind was spinning at lightning speed, meticulously analyzing the Devil King's every word and expression, combined with what the angel had told him. His conclusion was that the Devil King knew something, but not everything.
Regarding matters concerning him, the Devil King likely learned about them from the prophecies of the current generation's Fairy Demon Clan Chief and their ancient family records. With the Law in play, as demonstrated by Koroy, it was probable that the Fairy Demon Clan Chief's attempts to peer into the future were blocked by the Law, preventing them from fully glimpsing most events. Even with immense power, they could only see fragments of what was to come.
Wen Ying didn't know if the Fairy Demon Clan Chief from thousands of years ago, who spoke to the angel about his legacy unfolding thousands of years later, had foreseen him becoming the second-generation Angel. He also didn't know if that Fairy Demon had mentioned this matter to any other demons.
Logically, if the Fairy Demon Clan Chief from a thousand years ago could tell the angel about his legacy being fulfilled in a thousand years, they should have known that the successor would become the second-generation Angel. So, could it be... that the Fairy Demon didn't divulge this information to any other devil?
Why?
Wen Ying was perplexed, without any clue, but it didn't hinder his current urge to jump around in excitement. He said to the Demon King, "If I can handle it, would you agree to grant me the title of Demon King for a hundred years?"
The Demon King raised an eyebrow. "I didn't expect your ambition and audacity to be so great."
The Demon King no longer seemed angry; instead, he appeared more like a senior looking at a daring child. His disregard for the limitations of the Devil Mirror made him not take Wen Ying's bold words to heart. He chuckled indulgently, "Alright, after ten years, if you can suppress those upper-level demons who harbor ambitions for the throne, the position of Demon King will still be yours."
For some reason, halfway through his sentence, the Demon King suddenly lost the desire to continue, but since he had already started, he hesitantly finished his statement.
Strange, the Devil thought, but as he gazed at Wen Ying's silver features, he quickly dismissed this inexplicable sense of foreboding.
Even the most powerful Magic Mirror Demon in history was only on par with a High-Rank Devil. Despite being favored by the laws, they could only exert greater power in the Human Realm.
Wen Ying lacked the support of a powerful clan demon, and it was impossible for him to single-handedly challenge dozens of High-Rank Devil leaders. Without his assistance, Wen Ying couldn't possibly gain the people's obedience.
Wen Ying spoke solemnly, "Lord Devil, you can't go back on your word."
The Devil took it lightly, responding cheerfully, "I'm the Devil King. Why would I lie to you?"
Though Wen Ying didn't say it out loud, his gaze was subtle.
The Devil: "…The younger generation nowadays is really becoming less and less endearing."
The Devil raised his hand, and a blank scroll on the ground was drawn towards him by his magic. Using his black claws, he inscribed words on the scroll with magical energy, and soon a contract took shape.
He then fetched a seal, stamped it on the document, and tossed it to Wen Ying.
Wen Ying caught it and scanned through it rapidly. The text on the scroll outlined the agreement they had just discussed. A bashful smile appeared on his face as he said, "Lord Devil, you have such a wonderful temper."
The Demon King crossed his arms, and his appearance suddenly transformed from an old sage into a handsome, youthful figure. He snorted coldly, "Of course I have a good temper. Come on, let's go. I'm going to have some fun."
Wen Ying walked out with the Demon King. He stowed the scroll away in his bracelet and followed behind the Demon King, glancing at the tall, agile silhouette in front of him. The Demon King seemed to be in a great mood.
He wondered if, in ten years – or perhaps even just a few years – the Demon King would still be in such high spirits.
The Demon King was always trying to take advantage of him; it was time for Wen Ying to turn the tables.
Suppressing the urge to skip out of the castle, Wen Ying left the Demon King's domain and flew back to his residence in a dizzying, swirling path.
Aluda watched as Wen Ying bounced in, surprised. "Eh? Little Ying, did something good happen when you met the Demon King?"
Wen Ying nodded, his face breaking into a wide grin. He zoomed over to Aluda's side and whispered mysteriously, "Grandma, the Demon King is going to fall into my trap."
Aluda looked skeptical. "Be careful not to fall into his schemes. The Demon King is very cunning."
Wen Ying thought about it carefully for a moment, then shook his head. "I don't think so."
"What happened, then?"
Wen Ying hesitated for a moment before saying, "You'll know in due time."
Worried that Aruda might suspect her lack of trust, Wen Ying was relieved when Aruda didn't press the issue but simply smiled and went on to tend to his flowers.
Feeling a mix of relief and guilt, Wen Ying couldn't help but reproach himself. Aruda had been so kind to him, yet he had doubted whether Aruda would divulge his secret to the Demon King. After all, Aruda's thoughts were as deep and unfathomable as the ocean.
Having confided in Belleros but not Aruda, Wen Ying couldn't help but despise himself. Primarily, Belleros was much more naive compared to the Demon King and Aruda.
He walked to the lawn in the courtyard where he could see the Blood Tree. Little Bai, having caught his scent, rushed out from the forest, followed by Little Red, who had grown significantly larger than Little Bai. The Crimson Flame Sub-Dragon's monstrous nature was beginning to show.
Little Bai leaped up onto Wen Ying's head in just a few steps, while Little Red nudged its head towards Wen Ying. As Wen Ying stroked its head, he marveled at how quickly time had passed. It would soon be a year since he had unexpectedly transformed into a demon.
The Blood Tree grew at an alarming rate, unlike ordinary trees in the human realm. It seemed to thrive with ample fertilizer, allowing it to develop swiftly.
Its silver-white branches shimmered with a subtle luster under the sunlight, creating a serene and picturesque scene. However, the nourishment that sustained it was blood and corpses.
On the surface, it appeared beautiful and enchanting, yet behind the facade lay cruelty and darkness. This contrast aptly encapsulated many demons and exorcists.
Wen Ying gazed at the Blood Tree, contemplatively mulling over the right moment to reveal his human identity to the world.
Angels required demonic activity to weaken the barrier's hold on them. The Devil, in tandem with the angel's scheme, infiltrated the human realm to prevent the laws from perceiving the demon's invasion as a threat to the angel's seamless descent. The Devil exploited Wen Ying's lineage and status for this purpose.
How cunning the Devil was, manipulating the angel while simultaneously hindering their objective. In the end, Angel Wu Mixiu had no choice but to forcefully breach the barrier, compromising their own foundation in order to inhabit that vessel.
