Chapter 282 – A Kick
by 夜阑妖歌Chapter 282 - A Kick
Under Wen Ying's threat of requisitioning their materials, the demons moved swiftly. As Wen Ying watched Muershi, who had arrived without asking him any questions, a hint of contemplation flashed in his eyes.
This guy Muershi wasn't easy to deceive. He would definitely investigate, but no matter how thoroughly he searched, he wouldn't be able to uncover the term "successor angel."
When everyone had left, Wen Ying entered and said to Beros, "It's time for class."
Beros replied, "Your phone has been ringing constantly."
Wen Ying walked over, switched his phone to flight mode, then used an unknown number to call his parents and explain the situation before heading to class.
As the two demons parted ways, not a single passerby on Wen Ying's way to the classroom failed to look at him.
He was the future Demon King! As the first and probably the last Demon King to ascend from the rank of Mirror Demon, he was a product of the demon world's politics, truly extraordinary.
In the classroom, those who felt they were closer to Wen Ying gathered around as soon as he entered, chattering excitedly.
Lu Qingyuan felt that his status had been rising continuously. Each time Wen Ying revealed something more impressive, he thought it couldn't get any better. Even if it did, he wouldn't be as shocked as he was now, yet every time, he found himself even more astonished.
The status of a successor to the Demon King should be the highest, right? There shouldn't be any other identity that could astonish him more, Lu Qingyuan thought to himself.
Somehow, the news of Wu Shaluo's challenge to Wen Ying had spread by evening, turning into common knowledge.
His parents and relatives called, expressing their concern and unease. They were less knowledgeable about demons, so Wen Ying easily reassured them. However, it was more challenging with his great-grandfather.
Wen Dingjue, a native demon from the Realm of Demons, was well aware of the power doubling phenomenon. Despite Wen Ying's claims that everything was fine, he paced restlessly in his room all night, unable to sleep.
The Demon King had also heard about the situation. Intrigued by Wen Ying's overconfidence, he saw this as an opportunity to determine whether it was blind self-assurance or genuine ability.
The next day, many high-ranking demons gathered at the Demon Academy's arena to witness the battle.
The demon students within the academy filled the arena, leaving latecomers standing. Ordinary humans in the Human Realm wished they could transform into demons to witness the spectacle.
Upon returning to the academy, Wen Ying encountered Yun Lao, whose face wore a look of sorrow. Noticing the change in Yun Lao after some time apart, Wen Ying pretended not to know and greeted him warmly with a smile, "Good afternoon."
"You said you'd take the consequences for me," Yun Lao murmured. "Lately, the sight of words makes me nauseous."
Without waiting for him to finish, Wen Ying pulled out a book from his spatial bracelet. It was wrapped in a white cover.
Yun Lao's words trailed off as he accepted the mysterious book with curiosity. Flipping through a couple of pages, his eyes gradually lit up.
"This is a collection of torture methods used in the Human Realm," Wen Ying explained. "There are no such books available on the market. I had to go through great lengths to find it."
Yun Lao flipped a few more pages and said contentedly, "Not bad."
Wen Ying had asked Muershi before. Not only did Yun Lao enjoy pain, but he also enjoyed torture – though not on himself, but on other creatures. He was both a sadist and a masochist, quite an oddity.
"Considering this book, we're even," Yun Lao said, storing the book away in his own spatial magic tool. "I heard you're going to challenge Wu Shaluo today, who has just come of age?"
Wen Ying nodded.
With evident interest, Yun Lao gazed at the calm and composed Wen Ying, who showed no sign of panic. "I'm looking forward to it."
"Why are you still here?" Beros appeared suddenly. "Wu Shaluo is inside, boasting that you don't dare to face him."
"Boros~" Yun Lao called out Boros's name with a quivering, excited, and sticky tone.
Boros didn't even blink. "I'm busy, and Wen Ying is too."
With that, Boros roughly tugged on Wen Ying's sleeve, pulling him into the arena.
In front of outsiders, Boros was always quite rough, and Wen Ying sighed inwardly, knowing that there was no way they could show affection or feed others with their sweetness.
Entering the arena, Wen Ying couldn't help but gasp at the packed venue.
Boros said, "Many demons have come to witness your misfortune."
"That's right," the voice of the fallen angel Huiguo came from beside them.
Wen Ying turned his head and saw Huiguo, Lai Yehua's nephew, looking at him with delight and schadenfreude.
"When I come of age, I'll challenge you too," Huiguo said happily. "I hope your ranking doesn't fall too far behind before then, or else I won't be able to challenge you."
At the Lucifer Demon Academy, only those in lower ranks could challenge those in higher ones.
Wen Ying raised an eyebrow. "Relax, I'm worried you won't dare to."
Huiguo let out a series of mocking laughter. "Poor guy, I hope you don't fall apart too much after Wu Shaluo effortlessly defeats you."
"The match between Wen Ying, step onto the stage," the old demon referee called from the platform.
Wen Ying spread his wings and flew over, deliberately showcasing his single pair of original demon bat wings.
Wu Shaluo's aura was different than before. After returning to the demonic realm and undergoing several hours of physical transformation and adaptation as he waited for maturity, he skipped his coming-of-age ceremony and instead came straight here, eager to beat Wen Ying into submission.
Wu Shaluo grinned, trying not to look too foolishly gleeful.
Wen Ying sized him up. "You've certainly gotten stronger."
Wen Ying couldn't pinpoint exactly how much Wu Shaluo's power had multiplied, but he could sense that Wu Shaluo was significantly more powerful now, like a cat transformed into a lion, with a vastly increased level of danger.
Without the angel's gift of law power, today's match would have been truly troublesome for Wen Ying, a fierce battle. But...
Wu Shaluo was so overeager that he overlooked a subtle oddity in his perception of danger.
"How do you think that young one is doing?" the leader of the Nine-Tailed Fox clan, Lin Lingwei, casually asked.
The leader of the Wicked Bird clan, Yan Yujing, chuckled in response. "He seems quite confident."
The Devil King turned to Aruda and inquired with interest, "Do you think he can win?"
Aruda remained unperturbed. "Who knows?"
Lennach, the leader of the Hellhound clan, spoke boldly and earnestly. "Berros still has a soft spot for that Demon Mirror. Perhaps that kid really does have some decent strength."
The demons who had gone to the Human Realm as exchange students were also present. They watched the central arena with a mix of unspeakable tension and anticipation for adulthood.
Wen Ying had been weighing down on them for far too long! For these young devils with potent demonic bloodlines, having the Demon Mirror trample on their heads was unbearable.
Today, Wu Shaluo would take matters into his own hands.
The elderly devil referee approached the arena nonchalantly and announced, "The challenge begins."
Wu Shaluo rubbed his fists together, his body brimming with battle intent, excitement, and a thirst for blood. His demonic aura exuded an especially intimidating presence.
The flames of the fully-grown Scarlet Crow enveloped its wings in a grand display, bending the visual landscape as if even the feathers had fiery ears. Its handsome, devilish face appeared even more demonic in the blaze, beautiful yet terrifying.
"Are you ready to scream?" Wu Shaluo flexed his limbs, his voice trembling with excitement as he sized up Wen Ying, contemplating how he should make his move.
He completely underestimated Wen Ying. In the midst of his thoughts, Wen Ying's sudden kick interrupted his pleasant reverie.
Wu Shaluo: "???"
What the hell?
The entire scene buzzed with noise, resembling a bustling marketplace.
Lennach chuckled and said to the leader of the Scarlet Crows, "Wu Shaluo's reaction time is lacking. He was too overconfident."
