Chapter 288 – Subtle
by 夜阑妖歌Chapter 288 - Subtle
Classes were canceled in the afternoon because the academy's teachers had been urgently dispatched to assist elsewhere. Wen Ying knew that many of his demonic classmates had gone out to investigate the situation with the ants. Belphegor also went out with enthusiasm, randomly selecting a leader to challenge.
In the past, the academy's administration had been anxious about the demons leaving the premises. This time, however, they were unusually delighted, for their manpower was indeed too scarce.
Wen Ying did not venture out. His mirror clone remained in Mu City. In the outskirts of the city, there was a nest of ants. After he killed them all, he crouched down to examine the ant corpses. The area of the stone-like skin on the ant leader was only about one-twentieth of its entire body.
These ants were indeed difficult to deal with for ordinary exorcists. Their defenses were too high, their shells thick, and their pain receptors much lower than those of normal creatures.
Wen Ying's mirror clone stood atop the pile of ant corpses, deep in thought.
The Church of the Archangel likely didn't create these creatures with the intention of mutual destruction, he mused as he gazed at the sprawling remains. The glaring red glow of the setting sun cast upon the monsters' corpses, cloaking them in an eerie veil that accentuated their grotesque horror.
Amidst the black ant corpses lay a giant ant, about five meters tall, its charred remains scattered into several pieces, some still wriggling.
This was a scene of bloodshed that should not exist in modern civilization; anyone who saw it would believe they had been transported back to the days of desolation.
In response to the public's inquiries, the Church only confirmed that these ants were Fallen Rock Monsters, but they had no idea how they had come to be.
The turmoil in the human world caused the activity of the laws to gradually rise. Wen Ying looked up at the sky. The slumbering law was awakening, but since it wasn't related to demons, the barrier didn't become more fragile because of it.
As the law awakened, Wen Ying could sense the fragments of the law within him becoming more active. He vaguely sensed a message from them: Drive away the monsters and protect the human world.
There was no sound or image, but he could sense this vague consciousness.
The semi-slumbering law was currently unable to convey a clear message to him. It had to fully awaken before it could deliver a clear command to Wen Ying, like an emperor issuing orders to his subjects to protect the nation.
Wen Ying, who had law fragments within him, could sense that the law didn't want to awaken at this moment. Its awakening would mean the disappearance of the barrier between the human and demon worlds.
It was hesitating.
Wait a minute, something suddenly flashed across Wen Ying's mind. He tried hard to recall it with uncertainty.
So that was the case! This was the purpose behind the Archangel Church creating those Fallen Stone Ants! Wen Ying's puzzled gaze gradually brightened.
In the dormitory of the academy, the phone on Wen Ying's body rang.
He answered the call and, as usual, respectfully greeted, "Your Majesty, the Devil King."
The Demon King's voice was filled with pleasure. "Tell those human leaders that we can help them eliminate the ants. Regardless of which country, as long as they seek our aid, we'll agree. I'll send more demonic soldiers over later."
"Wonderful."
It was perfect for the Demon King to dispatch some demonic soldiers first, as it aligned with Wen Ying's current plan.
Wen Ying promptly released the message through the Judgement Bureau's account and then forwarded all the incoming calls to Ye Wang, leaving the matter entirely in his hands.
Ye Wang: "????"
After the news broke out that demons were willing to assist, numerous small countries called for help, while the larger ones were still deliberating. Primarily, they still had some capacity to resist and did not immediately consent.
But what after the demons arrived and wiped out the ants? The demonic threat was no less significant than that of the ants.
Having assigned the Demon King's task to Ye Wang, Wen Ying immediately began formulating a plan.
If he wasn't mistaken, this situation was orchestrated by Wu Mixiu. He had given the Law, which didn't wish to fully awaken, a third option—
To send the Law, who had ties with the human world, back to Earth.
To cast other angels into the human realm, the barrier must be lifted, but not for him. At this semi-awakened state of the law, it wouldn't be too stringent about Wu Mixiu's slight connection to the human world.
If he were Wu Mixiu, he could simply tell the law that the church had preserved something of his, allowing him to maintain a connection with the human realm. All it would take is for the law to consent to casting him into that connected vessel, without the need to break the barrier and send his true form over.
Moreover, with demons causing trouble, he could intimidate them simultaneously.
But what Wu Mixiu didn't anticipate was that there was already an angel in the human realm.
Right now, Wu Mixiu was likely striving to appeal to the semi-awakened law, attempting to persuade it to let him enter the human realm.
Wen Ying could sense the drowsy confusion of the law, akin to being half-asleep. The law, not fully awake, was probably bewildered as to why there was still an angel that had slipped through its grasp, when it had supposedly retrieved all the angels.
As for the escaped angel Wen Ying, he quickly formulated a plan. First, he needed to locate the queen or king of this colony of ants, defeat the boss, and Wu Mixiu's plan would likely involve descending as a hero to eliminate the boss, earning the gratitude and admiration of humanity.
Despite having his first plan ruined by the Demon King, Wu Mixiu had already prepared a second one. Wen Ying mused that his mind worked rather swiftly.
The mirror image probed the five-meter-tall ant corpse, studying it extensively. It discovered that the creature's head was different from ordinary ant soldiers; inside, there was something resembling a diamond.
Using two nearby branches as makeshift chopsticks, Wen Ying extracted the object and sensed a residual trace of spiritual energy. He paused in surprise, then burst with ecstatic delight.
Found it! This object is connected to either the ant queen or king, and even in death, the link remains incomplete.
Wen Ying called back Beros, who had initially planned to join his fellow demon classmates in their demonic legion's relief efforts for the disaster zone, seeking glory for the Realm of Devils. However, after Wen Ying whispered a few words to him, Beros' eyelids twitched several times, and he fell silent, accompanying Wen Ying without protest.
Wen Ying and Beros' true forms boarded a plane to Mu City. Throughout the journey, Beros remained ominously quiet.
"Don't keep that stern expression on your face; you're scaring the people around us."
Beros continued his silence, exuding an oppressive aura to any creatures passing by.
The ants in Mu City had been dealt with, and a demonic legion was stationed there, so despite the number of pedestrians on the streets, they all kept a safe distance from Beros.
Upon reaching the outskirts of the city, Wen Ying's mirror image handed over the discovered diamond substance before vanishing. Looking at Beros, whose face was devoid of emotion but radiated deep resentment, Wen Ying said, "You've been like this the whole way."
Beros directed his gaze at Wen Ying. "After this..." He trailed off, unsure of how to continue, his expression growing even more pained and resentful.
For a hellhound demon to seek out an angel – it wasn't just about reputation or pride. The mere act itself was enough to evoke mixed emotions in anyone who heard about it.
Wen Ying reassured, "They'll be shocked to learn that I'm a second-generation angel. Don't you want to see their reactions?"
Boros fell silent, slowly nodding.
"Well then," Wen Ying said, "I don't want to expose myself either, but there's no choice. If I don't go out, Wu Mixiu will come down."
Boros growled softly, "Annoying creature."
At this moment, Wu Mixiu was outside the barrier, tirelessly pleading with the Law to let him down, completely unaware that an angel was already moving about in the human world.
Wen Ying, holding the diamond substance, grew increasingly puzzled as he walked. Boros followed behind, watching him circle around Mu City several times before finally speaking up, "Are you sure this thing is useful?"
Wen Ying was also bewildered, "It should be around here, this navigation system is really unreliable—"
As soon as he finished speaking, a possibility popped into Wen Ying's mind, and the same thought flashed across Boros's mind.
Wen Ying's face turned pale in an instant.
