Chapter 290 – Bewilderment
by 夜阑妖歌Chapter 290 - Bewilderment
Three pairs of new wings suddenly emerged behind the floating Demon Mirror, emitting a warm, gentle light that was characteristic only of angels as recorded. His silver-white hair shimmered like the rippling surface of the sea in reflection.
Behind his pristine, divine wings, there was an even larger shadowy pair, also radiating a soothing glow. As the illusory wings appeared, countless ethereal feathers fell, transforming into white light that dissipated in the air.
The stunned demons around him instinctively retreated, their innate aversion to these light spots kicking in.
"One… What is he?" a demonic soldier asked with a peculiar tone.
After much deliberation, everyone agreed that his "what is he" aptly captured their current thoughts.
Indeed, "what is he". In broad daylight, a Demon Mirror had suddenly transformed into something resembling an angel. What was his status now?
Despite their bewilderment and shock, a strong sense of unease and hostility arose simultaneously among them.
Angels were the eternal foes of demons and their greatest adversary in their occupation of the human realm. Wen Ying had wandered around the demon world for quite some time and knew many secrets known only to the upper echelons. If such a demon turned out to be an angel, then their plans, both past and present, would likely end in vain.
Erga quickly considered another possibility. "Could he be a spy?"
Erga mused about the unfortunate fate of the young master of the Demon Clan they served, Elgar looked over at Berros, who was also flying in mid-air, just about ten meters behind Wen Ying.
When Elgar clearly saw Berros's expression, his heart was shaken, and his eyes nearly popped out.
Berros showed no hint of shock or astonishment at Wen Ying's current form!
Although Berros was usually not expressive, even if he didn't show much emotion, Elgar could still tell whether he was surprised or not. Berros's current demeanor clearly indicated that he already knew!
Could it be that the Demon Mirror wasn't a spy? But this appearance... Could it not be an angel?
Elgar fell into confusion. His knowledge of angels was limited to hearsay. In this age, who had actually seen an angel? Even the powerful great demons hadn't seen one with their own eyes.
Berros's pupils reflected the silver creature before him. He stared unwaveringly as the demon before him revealed its true form, suppressing the instinctive rejection and disgust of his race.
Not only the demon was shocked. Wu Mixiu, who had been waiting for the right moment to release the Ant Queen, shattering the last straw of law concerns, had his strategic mindset instantly shattered after unleashing her. A part of his container, an arm, was within the Ant Queen's body, granting her the power to destroy the world.
But it was precisely this arm that made the celestial Wu Mixiu indirectly confront another "angel" in the sky.
Incredulously, his gaze "descended," fixing on the location. To his surprise, there was indeed an angel present in the human realm. Wu Mixiu froze, like a machine that had stopped functioning.
Where did that peculiar angel come from? How was it possible that he had no knowledge of such an angel beforehand?
Law?
Wu Mixiu immediately inquired about the Law, but the semi-slumbering Law gave him an oblivious response. Wu Mixiu was taken aback, his divine soul trembling with anger.
What audacious scoundrel had snatched his fruit!
The slumbering angelic consciousnesses around him seemed to be watching the spectacle with amusement. Enduring their incessant chattering, Wu Mixiu scanned his surroundings and realized that one was indeed missing. His rage boiled over.
"Cygnus!"
"Stop shouting, Cygnus hasn't returned," said an angelic consciousness.
"Not for thousands of years."
"That's a demon, not Cygnus."
"But he carries Cygnus's aura. It's strange."
The angels were perplexed, but upon hearing this, Law recalled that there had indeed been something going on when He was asleep – His power had shifted from one soul to another.
Without mentioning it to the others, as Law regained some clarity, He began to examine the creature below who now held His created angels' power. Upon closer inspection, that being's shell seemed to be… a demon?
A demon?! Law trembled, and a low rumble of thunder echoed throughout the heavens and earth.
Unmindful of how many eyes were upon him, Wen Ying revealed his true form and made his move against the Ant Queen.
There were no grand poses or righteous accusations; he simply attacked without a word.
Dozens of silver-white branches emerged from the ground, stretching towards the Ant Queen in layers. She let out a screech as the vanguard branches were severed by an invisible force, falling to the ground.
The branches paused for a few seconds before surging forward once more.
Wen Ying tapped into his demonic power, invoking the power of Law to summon white-purple lightning from the heavens.
The Ant Queen screeched, and a crimson beam shot out from its human-like face. The beam, which had abruptly thickened and expanded within five meters of its exit, collided with the descending lightning, releasing a massive energy wave.
"Boom!"
The suburban trees were severely damaged by the powerful shockwave, and in the densely populated Mu City, numerous windows shattered from the impact.
Below, the demons shielded themselves from the flying debris as they squinted to watch the battle above.
It seemed that the angelic Mirror Demon was quickly casting a new spell, followed by several colossal magic snakes that approached the Ant Queen. The Ant Queen tore apart a few of the snakes, but its humanoid face on top was caught off guard by a whip, letting out a sharp infant's cry. Within seconds, the card with the magic attached to its face expanded, unleashing a burst of black flames. The Ant Queen immediately dove downward, pressing its forehead against the ground in an attempt to extinguish the flames, kicking up a cloud of dust in the process.
Before Wen Ying could descend for another attack, an irregular red orb erupted from the black flames, forcing them back. The Ant Queen turned its venomous gaze towards Wen Ying, then began spewing a steady stream of crimson acidic bile.
Wen Ying casually grabbed a nearby magic card, summoning a shower of meteorites that rained down like fire.
These replicated spells were weaker since their original owners were mostly Wen Ying's underage demon classmates. In comparison to the Ant Queen, the original versions were not as strong.
Despite their grand appearance, the meteorite rain was quickly dissipated upon contact with the scarlet acid, losing nearly a third of its force. Watching this outcome, a thoughtful glint appeared in Wen Ying's eyes as he threw more magic cards to buy time while creating new ones on the spot.
The demons watching below held their breath in awe; this was too daring!
As both sides' attacks intensified, the flames surrounding Berros flickered violently like a blazing bonfire. He closely monitored the situation, ready to intervene at any sign of trouble.
Despite his current minor status and the suppression of the human realm's laws, he was unable to inflict significant damage upon the Queen Ant...
Upon this thought, Poros's expression darkened dramatically, his wrath almost taking on a tangible form. The black flames that reflected his pent-up frustration danced fiercely.
Wen Ying completed the crafting and directly unleashed the magic of the card.
The same crimson acid shot back at the Queen Ant, provoking a moment of surprise. The weakened acid, having been diminished by the meteor shower, collided with Wen Ying's slightly less potent version and dissipated. A portion of the acid Wen Ying released even flew towards the Queen Ant.
"The abilities of a Demon Mirror..." Elga was even more perplexed. What exactly was Wen Ying? It was true that Wen Ying's Demon Mirror had some angelic blood in its lineage, but after thousands of years, that bloodline must have been diluted to an insignificant degree. It was unlikely that it could transform Wen Ying into an angel.
The queen ant's shattered wings unleashed a swarm of insects upon Wen Ying. The sight of the densely packed flying ants sent shivers down his spine, prompting him to summon lightning with a swift move of his hand.
How revolting!
The battle grew increasingly intense, drawing the attention of even more people.
So intense that it's impossible to overlook; the battle here has upheaved the heavens and earth, with magical power on the verge of tearing a rift in the fabric of space. Not only would those with sight find it hard to ignore, even the blind could not fail to sense it.
They dared not approach too closely, instead observing from a distance with various telescope-like instruments.
Approaching was no easy task either, for the overwhelming magical pressure was terrifying. Moving forward under such pressure felt like scaling a massive mountain, and the scent of blood instinctively repelled one.
In one group, a man carried a cumbersome, specially designed camera, relaying the scene to his superiors back at the base.
"Goodness gracious, the fighting over there is horrifying. Can this really be the work of humans? It feels as if the sky is about to collapse any moment now."
"The combatants on both sides aren't exactly human to begin with."
"The ground is shaking rather precariously. I wonder if it might crack open soon."
"Who was it that engaged in combat with that monstrous creature? I've never seen a being with four wings before."
Amidst the swirling dust, a face, both familiar and unfamiliar, emerged into view, leaving the crowd in a stunned silence.
While I'm unsure of what an angel might look like, surely a demon doesn't appear as such, does it?
This person's thoughts echoed the sentiments of all those who had caught a glimpse of the unknown figure's true face within the battlefield.
Upon hearing from the elders of the Archangel Church, who were high-ranking officials, that an angel had descended in the Flower-Blooming Country, their joy knew no bounds. Their wrinkled faces blossomed into smiles as radiant as chrysanthemums.
"The Almighty Angel has finally descended."
"After such a long wait, it has finally come to pass."
"We made it just in time." If the angel hadn't arrived any sooner, all hope would truly have been lost.
The followers of the Flower Planting Country suddenly spoke with an odd tone. The Pope's gaze sharpened. Unable to express their confusion, one follower sent a live video to their superior. Upon seeing the angel's face, some elders promptly fainted, only to be caught by high-ranking followers behind them.
The Pope nearly choked, gasping "Huhuhu" before managing to articulate, "I shall seek audience with the Almighty Angel!"
This Almighty Angel, of course, was not Wen Ying from the video but Wu Mixiu.
Wu Mixiu was furious, angrily informing the Pope who had requested an audience that the plan had gone awry – Wen Ying had intercepted his position.
