Chapter 299 – Betrayal
by 夜阑妖歌Chapter 299 - Betrayal
After obtaining more Law Fragments, Wen Ying's perception of the world intensified. He could sense the faint spiritual consciousness in the surrounding flora and fauna, the flowing magic energy in the air, the life force of humans, the various elements that made up the world, and even the barrier.
Wen Ying could now directly "see" the weakening energy of the barrier. It was growing thinner by the second, and the magic power constituting the barrier was dissipating into the human realm, being absorbed by the humans.
The aura of the demons in the distance was vastly different from that of the humans even further away. The demons' lives were composed of a large amount of magic power, whereas humans had much less.
Wen Ying flapped his wings and flew to the temporary encampment that the demons had established.
"You seem to have gained a lot," Muershi observed as Wen Ying descended from the sky, a hint of scrutiny flashing through his eyes.
In Wen Ying's hybrid wings, the angelic ones were larger than the demonic bat wings, causing him to subconsciously feel a sense of crisis — Wen Ying's angelic side seemed to be overpowering his demonic side.
Reason compelled him to suppress his instinctive killing intent. Koroy's crystal ball prediction likely wouldn't go wrong.
With this in mind, Muershi opened his arms and smiled, ready to give Wen Ying an enthusiastic hug, but was ignored. Wen Ying turned and walked towards Beros instead.
Muershi: "..."
Koroy chuckled mockingly. "Such lack of self-awareness."
Beros studied Wen Ying, who was also studying Beros. Compared to the other demons, Beros seemed to have only suffered minor injuries. However...
Beros tried to straighten his body, wanting to bask in Wen Ying's perception of him as reliable and powerful, but Wen Ying said, "Stop pretending. Sit down."
Wen Ying pressed Beros back into place, making him sit down, then pulled out a high-grade healing magic card to treat him.
There were many internal injuries. Wen Ying could now see that Beros' magical energy was flowing chaotically within him, with his blood and qi churning. Beros pondered for a moment, not understanding how he had given himself away.
"Phew—" Muershi laughed, but it turned into a gasp as it pulled at his stomach, his face twitching.
Koroy slowly approached Muershi, sitting on his magic staff, watching the spectacle with amusement before murmuring to himself, "You've grown much stronger."
His mother, the leaders of the upper demon races, and the Demon King were going to have their hands full. They probably hadn't expected Wen Ying to develop so rapidly.
Koroy was surprised that the Law allowed Wen Ying to devour another angel. This inevitably led Koroy to speculate that the Law intended to make Wen Ying stronger, capable of challenging the Demon Realm.
It wasn't a deliberate plan, but rather a natural progression that worked in their favor.
In the distance, someone hesitantly approached. Perseus cast a glance, but Wen Ying held him back and took the initiative to walk towards the humans.
Seeing the angel take the first step, the crowd was surprised and instinctively straightened up.
An angel was indeed an angel, so beautiful that those at a loss for words could not find any grandiose adjectives. They felt that Wen Ying, as he walked towards them, resembled a figure in an epic painting. His eyebrows and eyes were meticulously depicted by a painter, his aura majestic and grand, solemn yet gentle.
That smooth silver-white hair, illuminated by the soft glow of his wings, shimmered with luster, making him seem even less like an ordinary human.
Regardless of strength, just visually, he gave off a sense of being from a different world, a class apart. Though the angel's aura was gentle, it still carried a sense of pressure.
Scanning the crowd, Wen Ying asked, "Is there anyone from the Church here?" There were too many people with diverse backgrounds, and for a moment, he couldn't tell if there were any members of the Church among them.
Silence followed.
Wen Ying sensed that they might have misunderstood his intentions, so he added, "I want to ask them if, as a second-generation angel, I now have the qualifications to become the angel they serve?"
There were quite a few pragmatic individuals present. Immediately, several people declared that he was more than qualified. Among them were members of the Church, who, like startled birds, were both afraid of Wen Ying's actions and eager to obtain more information. They trembled with fear, almost ready to flee.
Seeing Wen Ying's attitude, it didn't seem like he was there for a massacre. A few of them exchanged glances, and one person, hesitantly stepping forward, said to Wen Ying, "Actually, there are many in the Church who hope you would join us, but the Pope and others stopped them and even suppressed any talk about it. Now that the Pope and his supporters are gone, the remaining members of the Church will surely welcome your arrival with open arms!"
Wen Ying looked at the man with a half-smile, "Then which part are you?"
The man immediately replied firmly and loudly, "I'm the part that supports you!" He omitted a prefix, starting from now on.
Wen Ying was well aware of the man's true allegiance, but he had other matters to attend to. As he sized up the man, his casual gaze made the man break out in cold sweat.
"You return to the Church and have the remaining elders and the head of the knight order convene a meeting," Wen Ying smiled, "Count those who welcome me and those who don't. I'll come to the Church headquarters later to receive the list."
The man from the Church tensed up. The second-generation angel was about to...
Well, he was still an angel. The Church of the Archangels had always believed in angels. The man grumbled inwardly; he didn't consider himself a traitor. It was the Pope and the others who were too rigid and inflexible. If they couldn't adapt, they would be left behind.
—How could an angel with demonic blood not be considered an angel!
The more the man thought about it, the more justified he felt. He straightened his posture even more in front of Wen Ying.
Spies from various countries and factions around them overheard their conversation and swiftly analyzed the information. They were secretly alarmed by the unfolding situation.
They had initially assumed that Wen Ying intended to destroy the Church of the Archangels, but they never expected him to try to co-opt it for his own use.
