Chapter392
"Brother, this is last month's financial report. Please take a look," said Ren Yanshi, who runs a logistics company that once thrived thanks to their family's influence. However, after their family's downfall, her business was scrutinized, although no wrongdoings were found. Nevertheless, the business plummeted, and fewer warriors were willing to contract with them.
Ren Yanke reviewed the report. Despite consecutive losses, he seemed unfazed, remarking, "A loss is expected. Many are still watching your company, and losses will keep suspicions at bay."
"But if we keep losing, we won't be able to sustain it. Maybe we should just liquidate. Running this logistics company is challenging; starting any other business might be better."
"That's not an option. We still need this company for a certain task. One of its advantages is its regular movement in and out of the base without raising suspicions. Without it, communicating with external parties will become challenging."
Zhou You raised an eyebrow, intrigued. He wondered who these 'external parties' might be.
"Brother, perhaps we should just stop all of this. We can lead a quiet life in the base. You might even find a wife. How can just the two of us possibly accomplish what father asked of us?"
"No! Either we live in glory or not at all. Look at where our family stood in Jiangnan, and look at us now. Are you content with this?"
Ren Yanshi thought of their past splendor and contrasted it with their current lowly status, feeling the vast difference.
However, she also remembered the time before the apocalypse, when they were just an ordinary family.
"Or we could leave, move to another base where no one knows us, and start anew."
Ren Yanko slammed his hand on the table, "Enough! I'm not leaving. Where we fall, we shall rise. We haven't lost completely. Although our father is gone, we still have a trump card. Once we play this right, our family can stand tall again."
Although Zhou You didn't see his face, he could imagine the wild expression as he spoke. This son of Ren Zhiyuan seemed relentless. Was the 'trump card' they mentioned what he was looking for? Was it related to external forces or perhaps that laboratory?
"Alright, go rest. In a few days, we have a shipment to send out. Organize it. It's the last one. We've been moving items in batches for the past six months, thanks to the weather. But this time, it might not go as smoothly. We need more hands."
"Almost half of the men our father left us with are gone. Some of them have even proposed quitting. It might be challenging to gather enough people this time."
"Hire more if needed. Tell them this is the last time. Once it's over, I'll pay them handsomely. Then, we part ways." Ren Yanko knew that without their father's influence, they couldn't hold onto these men for long. They'd have to use money as leverage for now.
Zhou You listened closely but couldn't decipher what the shipment contained. However, knowing its significance, he was determined to get his hands on it.
Once the study went silent, Zhou You waited another two hours. Only when he was sure the siblings were asleep did he stealthily enter the villa.
The study door was locked, but that wasn't an obstacle for Zhou You. As he gently closed the door behind him, he noticed a fine wire just inches behind him. If he hadn't opened the door so cautiously, alarms would have sounded.
Zhou You adjusted his glasses and meticulously scanned the room. He leaped over the wire, identified several other alarm triggers, and evaded them before starting his search.
The study was vast and airy. One wall was lined with bookshelves filled with books. Zhou You didn't have the time to search through each one. He quickly checked the most probable hiding spots and eventually found a built-in safe in a corner.
He could crack the safe but it would take time, and he wouldn't be able to cover his tracks. If he opened it, the Ren siblings would instantly know someone had broken in.
Zhou You hesitated, thinking it might be more crucial to obtain their mentioned item. It might not even be in the safe. Perhaps it was safer to wait until they transported it and then intercept it.
Leaving the Ren residence, Zhou You returned to his hotel and found Xuan Jue waiting outside his room. Long Gan and others were there too. Zhou You assigned them a task.
"Tail them? That's what we're best at," Xuan Jue chuckled. The Xuan sect excelled in inner energy and agility, making them perfect for tracking and assassination. However, under the guidance of their elder, they mostly walked the righteous path, maintaining a low profile.
"Leave it to me," Long Gan volunteered. "My former comrades are familiar with the Jiangnan base and the Ren family. With new faces around, it's best to be cautious."
Xuan Jue just wanted to impress Zhou You. "Master, assign me another task then."
