Chapter 30
byChapter 30
I knew there was something wrong with this bracelet.
Wave after wave of issues were causing Cen Sheng some frustration.
Although he had a physique that was more robust than ordinary people, not easily fatigued, the constant turmoil was taxing on him mentally.
Before the knocking, he faintly heard the elevator 'ding'. Immediately after, He Junye's voice sounded outside the door.
Just recently freed from a curse, He Junye was now extremely jumpy and timid. He wouldn't even dare to take the elevator alone, let alone venture to the restroom without Cen Sheng's company.
Cen Sheng didn't need to think hard to know that whatever was outside the door couldn't possibly be He Junye.
Officer Wang on the phone also heard the knocking, "Do you have visitors at your place?"
Storing his items in the simulator's backpack, Cen Sheng donned a Bluetooth headset, "No, I'm not home. I'm at a hotel near Yingnan Temple. I'm not sure who's knocking; it might be hotel staff."
"You're still injured. Why aren't you resting at home? What are you doing over there?"
"I felt like my luck has been down, so I came here to pray for blessings."
Cen Sheng pocketed his phone and, holding "A Warm World," approached the door.
"By the way, Officer Wang, I heard from a taxi driver that someone saw Wang Wenlong entering Yinhua Community."
"Wang Wenlong... the cannibal from the northeast? We did receive reports about that and sent people to investigate."
Officer Wang paused, sighing deeply, "The four officers who went to investigate all died mysteriously within half a year. Another group of officers went in later. They didn't suffer any harm and are still alive today. But one of them went mad, constantly babbling nonsense."
"He somehow got separated from his team for just ten minutes or so. When he returned, he was mentally disturbed, as if he had experienced some trauma."
Imitating the officer, he said, "The door! The door is growing! This is my fourth nightmare, I can't escape! I don't want to be in this world anymore, please kill me. Let me go back, I'm not the main character!"
Cen Sheng was baffled, "That's confusing. I don't understand."
"Neither do we. That officer is still in a psychiatric hospital. After two investigations into Yinhua Community both ended badly, that's when we started cooperating with Yingnan Temple. Now, when we need to go to suspicious places, we bring a few monks with us."
Cen Sheng's brows furrowed. He hadn't come across this information in his previous investigations of Yinhua Community.
It wasn't just internal police information he was unaware of; even the gossip that taxi drivers told everyone was news to him.
This didn't make sense.
Could it be that the intelligence network he and Rong Ye had painstakingly built over the years had developed some issues?
A series of urgent knocks interrupted Cen Sheng's thoughts.
Having not opened the door for a long time, the entity outside grew impatient, "Brother Sheng! Brother Sheng, open the door quickly! Xiao Jie is missing, I can't contact her, and it seems like something has happened to her!"
Hearing the commotion, Officer Wang thought there was an emergency on Cen Sheng's end. He hastily gave a few instructions before hanging up.
Cen Sheng sent a message to his personal phone, asking him to look into Bai Qiao, Tong Mingxian's Mother Goddess statue, and the Fortune monster.
He dared not mention Bai Yujing.
Rong Ye had fallen into the clutches of that organization, and Yinhua Community also seemed to have close ties with Bai Yujing.
Cen Sheng feared Officer Wang might risk his life investigating Bai Yujing before even finding anything.
————
Putting away his phone, Cen Sheng rubbed his temples.
The hotel where they were staying didn't have peepholes on the room doors. He couldn't see outside and could only rely on the sounds he heard.
After three days of continuous trouble and only a few hours of rest, Cen Sheng was quite exhausted.
Right now, he just wanted to rest well and didn't want to deal with the ghostly thing outside the door.
But having just called He Junye and Xiao Jie, and getting no response from either, he was worried that something had happened.
Lack of sleep left Cen Sheng in a sour mood. The continuous knocking was irritating him.
Abruptly, he yanked open the door, not even glancing at the ghostly entity outside, and fiercely slammed "The World of Warmth" right into its face.
"How rude can you be? Can't you be quiet? You're disturbing my rest!"
The person at the door screamed as they were hit.
He Junye, clutching his reddened forehead, looked at him in shock, "Brother, why did you hit someone!"
Seeing a familiar face, Cen Sheng paused briefly, then quickly realized what was happening.
He raised the book again to strike, while his gaze shifted down to inspect the man's body.
He Junye's upper body was protruding from the wall beside the door, like a humanoid mushroom growing out of it, twisted and facing the door.
The thing knocking was a monster from another world.
To protect He Junye, Cen Sheng had drawn all the hatred of the wall monsters to himself. Having noticed he hadn't returned to room 404 tonight, they had followed him from Yinhua Community.
But how had they found him here? It hadn't rained today.
The hotel room was clean with no signs of dampness. However, the corridor was wallpapered and carpeted, so even if there was mold, Cen Sheng wouldn't be able to see it.
The wallpaper near the door frame was torn, apparently the monsters intended to use the sound of the elevator doors opening to mask the noise of the wallpaper being damaged.
So that Shen Sheng wouldn't hear the noise and immediately think of the monsters growing out of the wall.
They hadn't anticipated that the real He Junye was already traumatized, not daring to take the elevator alone.
Ironically, the sound of the elevator became the biggest flaw in their plan.
"This also reveals something – the wall monsters didn't come by themselves; they brought along a new invisible monster."
"Otherwise, without a room card or the ability to reach the elevator buttons, they wouldn't be able to call the elevator."
"After bashing the monsters' heads a few times, Shen Sheng quickly deduced their plan."
"The invisible monster can only orchestrate accidental deaths, and now it's probably figuring out how to kill him."
"Disguised as the monster He Junye, it lunged at him with bared teeth and claws. Shen Sheng dodged while surveying the corridor."
"Quick thinking and swift action, I identified four potential spots where the invisible monster might lurk. I tossed my lucky coin in each direction, employing a process of elimination to pinpoint its approximate location."
"Thud—"
The creature masquerading as 'He Junye' suffered a concave deformity on its head, courtesy of a direct hit from 'The Warm World,' leaving it dazed and immobilized.
Seizing the moment, I hurled the small stone with precision.
The stone soared through the air, missing its target. It seems I misjudged the angle, prompting it to swiftly return to the sanctuary of my palm.
"Good job, little one!"
I rubbed the small stone affectionately before launching it once again.
A resounding thump echoed in the corridor. My aim was true this time; the stone unerringly struck the monster's head.
I paused for a second, noting the stone's continued suspension in mid-air, not returning as expected.
"Come back now."
"Come back!"
I called out twice, yet the small stone aimlessly drifted in the air, showing no intention of returning.
Simultaneously, the mechanical voice of my assistant echoed in my mind.
"The enchanted stone has successfully mastered a new skill—Clinginess."
"As a clingy stone, it should possess the unique ability to stick persistently to the enemy. The stone has latched onto the target, attempting to drag it back."
"The stone's attempt has failed."
"A change in the stone's personality is detected, shifting towards self-doubt. Please soothe the item's emotions promptly."
I paused my book-swinging action momentarily. The creature impersonating He Junye quickly retreated into the wall, snatching the wallpaper to re-cover the moldy spots.
Observing the small stone sticking to the invisible monster, chaotically whisking around the corridor, I fell into deep contemplation.
The stone's skill is freshly acquired. What triggered the unlocking of this new ability?
I recall casually uttering 'good kid' earlier.
"Could it be that satisfying the emotional needs of an enchanted object increases its power?"
————
After parting with Xiao Jiejie, He Junye entered his room alone.
It was a hot day, and they had walked several rounds under the scorching sun at Yinhe Temple in the afternoon, sweating profusely.
He Junye wanted to take a shower but was afraid to stay in the bathroom by himself.
When they stayed in Yinhe Residential Area the day before, he had hurriedly taken a quick shower only with Shen Ming’s company.
Shen Ming was very patient and always had a gentle smile on his face. He Junye thought Shen Ming probably wouldn’t mind accompanying him for another shower.
He felt a bit embarrassed always troubling Shen Ming.
This time, he thought he would be reassured if Shen Ming just stood outside the bathroom door where He Junye could see his silhouette.
He Junye tried calling Shen Ming several times but couldn't get through.
Shen Ming had mentioned that due to his work, he always carried his phone with him. If he didn't answer, it meant something had happened.
Worried, He Junye didn’t dare to cross the long corridor alone to find Shen Ming. Instead, he knocked on the next-door room, hoping Xiao Jiejie would accompany him.
“Jiejie, something seems off with Brother Shen. Can you come with me...”
Before he could finish, the door suddenly opened by itself.
The room was dark without the lights on. Standing at the doorway, he could vaguely see a woman sitting on the bed.
Her back was turned towards the door, her silhouette identical to Xiao Jiejie’s. Her shoulders were continuously heaving, and her back was trembling violently, as if she was crying.
He Junye tentatively called out, "Jiejie?"
“Umm…”
Although the woman's response was unclear, it could still be discerned as Xiao Jiejie's voice.
It was the peak tourist season, and the hotel was bustling with guests.
In the room opposite, a group of college students were playing a board game, their excited shouts and laughter audible even through the closed door.
Just a few steps away from He Junye, a couple in another room were arguing. The man, speaking with a non-local accent, complained about spending too much money on trinkets at the tourist sites. The woman, reduced to tears by his scolding, started arguing back.
The lively sounds of people dissipated He Junye's fear.
The corridor was well-lit, and outside the window, the city was alive with the hustle and bustle of traffic. It didn’t seem at all like a place where ghosts would lurk.
No longer hesitating, He Junye stepped into Xiao Jiejie’s room.
"Jiejie, next time you stay in a hotel, make sure to lock the door as soon as you enter. As a young, single woman, you’re more vulnerable to dangers than us old guys."
"Mhm..."
The air conditioning in the room was set very high, making He Junye shiver as soon as he entered.
Xiao Jiejie, with her back turned to him, remained silent, her shoulders still gently trembling.
"Your hair has a slight curl to it. I think you look better with your hair down rather than in a ponytail," He Junye casually remarked as he reached to adjust the air conditioning.
"Why is it so cold in here? Did you set the air conditioning to below ten degrees? Let me turn it up for you..."
His words abruptly stopped as he stared at the control panel in shock.
Xiao Jiejie hadn’t turned on the air conditioning? Why was the room so cold, then?
At that moment, the woman on the bed began to convulse violently, her body twisting in agony.
As her long hair swayed, He Junye saw two hands tightly clutching Xiao Jiejie’s neck.
Before he could fully grasp the situation, Xiao Jiejie suddenly fell to the floor.
"Her mouth agape as if obstructed by something, she was unable to utter a sound."
"Her hands were clasped tightly around her neck, seemingly intent on strangling herself to death."
"Xiao Jiejie collapsed on the thick carpet of the hotel, her instinct to survive evident as she writhed on the ground, crawling towards He Junye."
"Her eyes bulging and rolling back, Xiao Jiejie mustered her last ounce of strength to emit a muffled plea for help, 'Mmmh—'"
"Next door, a young couple continued their argument, while the college student across the hall was still engrossed in their video game."
"Amidst these lively sounds and witnessing Xiao Jiejie's desperate struggle, He Junye stood frozen, his mind a complete blank."
"Bang—"
"In the next instant, the door shut automatically, locking itself."
"The light vanished entirely, plunging the room into darkness."
————
"Chen Shen, vexed by exhaustion, now wore a much more ferocious expression than before."
"After he used 'The Warm World' to lethally strike down the invisible monster, no new creatures emerged from the wall."
"After securing the small stone, Chen Shen furiously pounded the damaged wallpaper twice, 'I'm in a terrible mood right now, don't bother me. We're close to Yingnan Temple here, don’t force me to hammer you all to death in such a compassionate place!'"
"The hotel had few damp areas and was covered with carpets and wallpaper, unsuitable for the growth of arm monsters."
"They couldn't employ the monster swarm tactic like in Room 404 to besiege the target. With their weak individual combat abilities, they posed no threat to Chen Shen."
"Unhindered, Chen Shen quickly arrived at the room where He Junye and his companion were staying."
"The two rooms were adjacent. Using his detective's privilege, Chen Shen first unlocked He Junye's door."
"It was empty."
"There were no signs of struggle or combat in the room; He Junye had left on his own."
Shen Sheng turned and knocked on Xiao Jiejie's door, "Xiao Jie?"
The room was silent; no one responded.
Rubbing his temple in frustration, Shen Sheng sighed and silently pulled out "The Warmth of the World" from his bag.
"I'm a detective, open the door."
————
After several scares, He Junye was no longer as paralyzed with fear as when he first encountered the monster.
He quickly reacted, pulling out the prayer beads he had bought at Yin Nan Temple that afternoon, pressing them against Xiao Jiejie's hand.
As the beads touched her hand, Xiao Jiejie reacted as if burnt, her hands abruptly releasing their grip.
He Junye quickly helped her up, administering first aid, "Stay strong, Xiao Jie! Breathe, breathe!"
Xiao Jiejie's mouth was agape, almost split at the corners. Her arms flailed in the air as if an invisible monster was tearing at her mouth.
He Junye pressed the beads again, and a sizzling sound filled the air, accompanied by a woman's spiteful scream.
"Die! Just die!"
"You demon, I will have my revenge, I hate you so much!!!"
Immediately after, the prayer beads cracked several times, breaking into fragments on the ground.
The force tearing at Xiao Jiejie's mouth corner loosened; she lowered her head, coughing a few times, and gasped for air heavily.
Xiao Jiejie, too weak to stand, was carried on He Junye's back as he ran towards the door.
The single room in the hotel was small, and it only took a few steps to reach the door.
As his fingers touched the door lock, He Junye yanked the door open in one swift motion.
The joy of escape hadn't yet risen when he saw the scene outside the door, and his brain buzzed.
Standing at the door of the room was a blood-covered woman who slowly lifted her head, revealing a pale face without features.
Xiao Jiejie's weak voice came from behind, "There are many people in the hotel, yell... yell for help..."
He Junye immediately screamed at the top of his lungs, "Help! There's a ghost, help!"
The call for help worked; the door of the room opposite slowly opened, and two male college students peeked out.
They looked at He Junye and gave him a reassuring smile, "Don't worry, we're coming to save you."
As the male student finished speaking, they crawled toward He Junye on all fours, spider-like.
"We're coming, just wait, don't panic!!!"
"Creak—creak—creak—"
Meanwhile, the faceless female ghost at the door raised her arm, reaching for He Junye's neck.
Just as the ghost was about to burst through the door, He Junye slammed it shut with a loud bang.
Xiao Jiejie, a longtime resident of Yin He Community, had plenty of ghostly encounters and remained relatively calm.
Watching the door shake violently from the ghost's pounding, she gritted her teeth, "Go to the window, see if we can escape through it. We're on the third floor of the hotel, and there are many sunshades from the shops below. Falling on them might only cause some injuries."
He Junye was somewhat puzzled.
The third floor? But he remembered they had taken a long elevator ride, suggesting more than three floors.
Amidst the scratching sounds outside the door, He Junye's heart almost leaped out of his throat, no longer concerned about the floor number, "Where did these ghosts come from!"
"I don't know. I just let down my hair, thinking of taking a shower and chatting with Shen Sheng, when suddenly the room temperature dropped. Before I realized it, my hands started moving uncontrollably."
"What about the deity statue you were holding last night? Isn't it supposed to suppress evil entities?"
"The Goddess statue belongs to room 404; I can't take it out."
As they talked, Xiao Jiejie regained some strength. She took out a phone from He Junye's pocket, intending to call Shen Sheng for help.
As soon as she unlocked the screen, a pair of blood-red, bloodshot eyes appeared on it.
Xiao Jiejie, startled, dropped the phone. A human head slowly emerged from the screen, its eyes fixed intently on her.
He Junye finally managed to dodge the female ghost in the room and reached the window.
He drew back the heavy curtains, only to find the window plastered with numerous ghostly faces.
Countless ghosts completely blocked the window, biting and scratching the glass, leaving patches of crimson bloodstains.
Even through the glass, the ear-piercing cries of the ghosts could be heard.
The sheer number of ghosts was unprecedented, even for Xiao Jiejie, who had never seen such a scene before.
It was as if they were not in the human world but had fallen into a realm of ghosts and monsters.
The banging on the door outside grew louder and louder, "Open the door! We're here to help you! Open up!!!!"
"Didn't you scream for help? We're here to rescue you!"
Xiao Jiejie threw out two amulets she had begged for, driving the female ghost out of the room.
He Junye's legs gave out, and he collapsed to the ground, his mind going blank.
He couldn't understand how they had suddenly encountered so many ghosts at once.
Xiao Jiejie, dizzy with fear, still tried to remain calm: "Hang in there, if we don't come out for so long, Sheng Ge will soon come to find us, don't give up..."
"Bang!"
Before she could finish speaking, the door was kicked open. The male students and the faceless female ghost, stepping on the collapsed door, rapidly crawled towards them.
He Junye could no longer control himself and screamed in terror, "Ahhhh!!!"
At the most desperate moment, Xiao Jiejie's whisper echoed in his ears, "The glass is broken, let's jump out of the window quickly!"
Meanwhile, Xiao Jiejie, who was covering her ears and crying out in breakdown, heard He Junye's voice in front of her.
"Don't be afraid, Jiejie, it's only the third floor. We'll be safe once we jump out of the window."
"Come on, let's jump. We'll leap down together from the building."
Both turned their heads; outside, the lights shone brightly, and the sounds of people buzzed. They could faintly see people moving around in a nearby building where night shifts were underway.
It seemed that if they just jumped out of the window, they could escape this living hell and be safe.
————
With the 'Detective's Privilege' activated, Shen Sheng opened the door to Xiao Jiejie's room.
The room was in chaos, with traces of frantic movement everywhere.
He Junye was holding a chair, trying to smash the glass, while Xiao Jiejie had climbed onto the windowsill and opened the top window.
Behind each of them, a white ghostly figure lay, covering their eyes while whispering in their ears.
Misled by the ghosts, they had forgotten that their room was on the 10th floor. Jumping would mean severe injury if not death.
"Xiao Jiejie! He Junye!"
Shen Sheng shouted their names, and they clearly heard him.
They turned to look at him, their expressions filled with even more terror. Xiao Jiejie hurriedly squeezed out of the window, her upper body dangling outside.
Shen Sheng didn't speak again but threw the small stone at Xiao Jiejie and quickly hurled 'The Warmth of the World' at He Junye.
The stone hit the ghostly figure on Xiao Jiejie's back, which emitted a piercing scream similar to the possessing female ghost.
After driving away the ghost, the stone clung to Xiao Jiejie's clothes, slowly pulling her back into the room.
He Junye was knocked down, gasping for air on the ground. The shadow on his back wobbled and drifted towards the other shadow.
The two shadows gradually merged, eventually solidifying into a double-headed fierce ghost.
On the right was a male ghost's face with a sinister grin, its mouth slit to the ears. On the left was a woman's face, blood tears streaming down, her expression ferocious.
This ghost looked almost comical, nothing terrifying compared to the transfer monsters Shen Sheng had encountered.
Shen Sheng summoned the little stone back, sticking it firmly onto the cover of 'The Warmth of the World.'
When he called the stone back again, the hardcover book returned to his hand.
Wearing the Buddha pendant, Shen Sheng charged at the fierce ghost, slamming 'The Warmth of the World' hard onto the male ghost's face.
"I haven't rested for three days, can't you give me a break."
"I've barely lain in bed for an hour, and monsters come looking for me, and you're causing trouble too. Nighttime is for people to sleep, why are all you ghosts so rude!"
The male ghost's face seemed stunned, never having seen someone curse at a ghost while attacking with a book. It took a few hits before regaining its senses.
Both male and female ghost heads let out furious roars, their eyes blood-red, and the stench of blood around them growing stronger.
Shen Sheng thought the fierce ghost was going to fight desperately and readied himself for battle, pulling out the Buddha pendant.
However, the provoked ghost didn't attack him but bypassed He Junye in the middle and pounced directly towards Xiao Jiejie.
Shen Sheng narrowed his eyes.
Xiao Jiejie was an unlocked companion, and her profile didn't mention any special traits that attract ghosts.
Since it wasn’t because of her unique constitution...
Shen Sheng tossed the lucky coin, thinking, 'Tonight's ghost encounter with Xiao Jiejie is related to the jade bracelet.'
The coin landed in his palm, showing heads.
He knew it, that jade bracelet indeed had issues!
————
Freed from the influence of the fierce ghost, Xiao Jiejie and her companion finally saw the world return to normal.
They slowly remembered that their room was on the tenth floor of the hotel.
If not for Shen Sheng's timely arrival, they might have already jumped to their deaths, deceived by the ghost.
Seeing the fierce ghost charging at her again, Xiao Jiejie hurriedly retreated, her back pressing tightly against the wall.
Shen Sheng stepped forward quickly, "The jade bracelet is problematic, Jiejie, give it to me."
Despite his fatigue and irritation, his voice remained as calm and reassuring as ever, instinctively making one want to trust and rely on him.
Xiao Jiejie hastily tried to remove the bracelet, but it seemed embedded into her flesh, refusing to come off no matter how hard she tried.
"It's okay, don't panic, keep pressing it against the bracelet."
Shen Sheng threw the Buddha pendant, and He Junye quickly caught it with both hands, pressing it down onto the jade bracelet.
The item, fond of protecting the weak, found Xiao Jiejie and her companion pale and teary-eyed, the epitome of vulnerability.
The moment it touched Xiao Jiejie's wrist, the pendant emitted a faint golden light.
The jade bracelet, which had seemed almost fused to her skin, finally loosened. Xiao Jiejie, enduring the pain, yanked off the bracelet and tossed it to Shen Sheng.
As Shen Sheng predicted, the ghost stopped pursuing Xiao Jiejie and turned its blood-red eyes to attack him.
Shen Sheng agilely jumped onto the bed, dodging the lunging ghost.
He had a way to get rid of this ghost.
The ghost pursued those wearing the jade bracelet, and the monsters from another world had followed him to the hotel.
He could place the bracelet on one of the arms growing out of the wall, letting the ghost and monsters sort out their own conflict.
But he wanted to understand what was special about the jade bracelet, why the ascetic monk targeted Xiao Jiejie, and what role Yinhe Temple played in all this.
This ghost, drawn by the jade bracelet, might be a breakthrough. It should know something.
Perhaps hearing the commotion outside and thinking Shen Sheng was in danger, Rong Ye's awakening process accelerated significantly, with just over an hour remaining.
Confronted with the fierce ghost, now red-eyed and irrational, Shen Sheng wasn't sure if he could hold out until Rong Ye awoke.
He worried he might not lure the ghost effectively enough, causing it to flee prematurely.
He also feared enticing it too well and ending up killed by the ghost.
Hesitantly, Shen Sheng tried inserting the jade bracelet into "The World of Warmth."
The effect was minimal; the ghost continued its relentless assault.
After a moment of silence, Shen Sheng steeled himself with determination.
With the hotel's vast staircases, he could engage in a chase with the ghost.
He planned to stubbornly hold out for an hour, until Rong Ye's awakening. Together, they could capture the ghost and extract all its information.
He threw the Buddha pendant, fond of protecting the weak, to Xiao Jiejie and He Junye. Holding the jade bracelet in one hand, Shen Sheng dashed to the door.
"It's drawn to whoever wears the bracelet. I'll lead it away. Stay in the room and don't come out! Call me if there's danger; I'll come back!"
Xiao Jiejie, clutching the Buddha pendant, huddled with He Junye. They crouched in a corner, trembling like two quails.
Their eyes were red-rimmed, as if they were on the verge of crying.
Before leaving, Shen Sheng looked back and felt a pang of pity for the two unfortunate souls.
He sighed softly, his voice gentle and reassuring, "Don't be afraid, I've got this handled. Stay hidden and safe; that pendant will protect you. Don't cry, everything is in my hands now."
The fierce ghost was already on his heels, its sharp nails mere inches from his neck.
Shen Sheng, wearing the jade bracelet, hurried out the door without time for further explanations.
As the door closed behind him, the assistant's voice echoed in his mind.
