Chapter 115: The Five Senses
by 打僵尸Chapter 115: The Five Senses
Who could have imagined that after rushing into the ward in the middle of the night with hearts pounding, expecting an unknown battle against a villain, they would instead find the culprit lying on the ground in agony while the supposed victim sat calmly on the bed like an untouched lotus flower.
Upon seeing this scene, everyone heaved a sigh of relief. As long as the patient was unharmed and the villain had received his due punishment, all was well. However, seeing the villain rolling on the floor covered in blood stirred an inexplicable itch in their bones.
It must have hurt terribly.
The on-duty doctor and nurse who were patrolling the hospital recognized the two "villains" who had sneaked in at midnight. They were still in their hospital gowns, and one of them was even a patient from the fourth floor's specialized ward.
"Zhizhuahua! What are you doing here? Why did you run into someone else's ward in the middle of the night?"
"Who are you? How do you have the key to the on-duty room's ward? Whose key did you steal, and what were you planning to do by sneaking into the ward?"
The two patients in gowns were soon surrounded, and the security guards and on-duty doctors began questioning them.
The alert guard found a gleaming fruit knife, an air syringe, and an unidentified vial of medicine in the pocket of the patient who had entered through the door!
As for the patient who had climbed in through the window, there were no weapons on him, but he carried a long hospital restraint strap that could easily strangle someone.
Yet, the two patients who had intruded the ward in the dead of night paid no heed to the inquiries from the security guard or the doctor. After they pulled out the nails, their shrieks ceased. Silently, they sat on the stools with blank expressions, as if it wasn't them who had secretly trespassed into someone else's ward in the middle of the night.
Inquired too much, and they would clasp their heads and shake them vigorously, loudly protesting their ignorance and disassociation, as if they were two genuine madmen.
The security guards who arrived promptly and the on-duty hospital staff: "..."
Chen Jin, also present as a victim, observed the reactions of the two individuals with an unsurprised, disdainful smirk on his face.
I knew that the Spider Demon and the Big-Eyed Monster wouldn't leave any traces behind. Most likely, the residual power and intent to kill him on their bodies had vanished, realizing that these two were no longer of any use.
Should he indeed fall victim to their assault, there would be no future for him. If the two were apprehended, they might escape punishment due to their apparent mental instability, leaving authorities powerless against them.
Showing consideration, Chen Shijin addressed the security guards and on-duty medical staff, "I believe these two patients might have been hypnotized or are in a delusional state, mistaking me as an imaginary adversary. Fortunately, I'm unharmed. How about confining them in a special ward for the night and involving the police for further investigation tomorrow? It's almost two in the morning, and everyone must be exhausted. It's best if you all head back to rest."
Their gazes towards Chen Shijin instantly conveyed, "You are such a kind, handsome, and upright young man."
What kind of spirit was this? Despite nearly being assaulted by mentally unstable individuals, he was still concerned about others not getting enough sleep!
However... Hmm...
Considering the victim is unscathed while the perpetrator is riddled with wounds, requiring at least a month of recovery, it's indeed time for everyone to go home, wash up, and sleep without any worries.
The tense crowd dispersed, each finding their own peace with an odd sense of relief.
The nurse who had drawn Chen Shijin's blood during the day was on night duty. She hesitantly lingered behind, blushing slightly as she caught his gaze before softly asking,
"Handsome, when you insisted so earnestly earlier not to let anyone enter your room... Was it because..."
Chen Shijin smiled at her and placed a finger to his lips, gently shushing her.
"Goodnight."
He was merely defending himself quietly and perhaps a bit paranoid about being a victim.
With the preceding two haunting screams serving as a warning, Chen Shijin enjoyed a peaceful slumber for the rest of the night.
Awakening in the morning, the first thing to greet Chen Shi Jin's eyes was a close-up of a black feline face, yet his heart sank.
Sure enough, he couldn't feel the tickling or softness of the cat's fur against his skin anymore.
It was the fifth day in this world, and he had finally lost his fifth sense – touch.
This was a significant problem.
Without touch, it was akin to losing pain sensation; he wouldn't perceive the extent of any injury, have no sense of moderation in his actions, and perhaps... someone could pierce his heart from behind, and he wouldn't even know that he was bleeding profusely.
Moreover, Lezi's clawed warnings would now be utterly useless.
This was far from amusing.
He could inadvertently end up in this insensitive world.
And he needed to endure such days for three more days.
Sitting solemnly on the hospital bed, Chen Shi Jin realized that Scott would have to find the safest haven possible.
So, where could one find a safe haven?
As Chen Shijin pondered this, a loud knock echoed at the door. He called out for them to enter, and the elderly man and the nurse from the previous day cautiously pushed the door open.
In addition to the two of them, there were also two tall police officers standing outside with stern expressions.
When the four of them entered the room and saw the abundance of upright nails, banana peels, and even watermelon rinds still meticulously arranged on the floor, astonishment and a complicated, indescribable expression appeared on the faces of the elder and the nurse. However, the expressions of the policemen immediately turned grim.
Their gazes toward Chen Shijin were sharp.
Although the nurse and the elder had defended him and explained his recent experiences and possible psychological trauma before arriving, the sight of someone who had seemingly placed so many nails and fruit peels on the ground according to the steps one would take did not seem like the behavior of an innocent person.
"Cough, Little Jin, how do you feel now? Do you still have your sense of touch?"
The elder's voice boomed.
Chen Shijin first wore a sorrowful expression before responding in an equally loud tone, "No! Grandpa, I can't feel anything now! It's as if my tactile nerves have gone numb. I can't feel the texture of cat fur or the softness of a blanket, and even when I pinch myself, I don't feel any pain."
The young man's eyes reddened slightly as he spoke, "I... I wonder when I'll die like this. After all, without sensation, everything is lost."
"…But it's not a big deal, dying like this wouldn't be too painful for me…"
The old man and the nurse both immediately wore expressions of pity.
The two stern-looking police officers couldn't help but soften their gaze.
They never would have guessed that this young man was suffering from such a severe illness.
Anyone in his shoes might develop some emotional issues, no doubt.
Sigh. A bit of understanding is in order.
"Little Jin, don't say things like that! As I've said, one must always hold onto hope! We grandfathers are working hard on researching your condition, we've already found some unique viral factors in your blood. However, more time is needed for further study. Would it be okay if we took another five vials of blood today? Mainly to compare your condition with yesterday's, and ideally tomorrow's as well?"
Chen Shijin smiled. "Go ahead, Grandpa. You're doing this for my own good. But I might need to delay the blood draw for tomorrow. I'm thinking of applying to stay at the police station's detention center for a few days."
Old Man and Nurse: "?????"
Inquiring Policemen: "?!?!"
Could it be that this seemingly harmless young man was actually a latent sociopath, preparing to surrender after seeing them?
After the nurse swiftly completed the blood draw, the two police officers approached Chen Shijin.
"We're here to inquire about the incident last night, when you, well, were assaulted late at night. The sequence of events is mostly clear, but could you tell us why you decided to stay in a police station for a few days? Have you had any prior encounters with the law?"
Chen Shijin sat on the bed, his expression benign and innocent. "Of course not. Please don't misunderstand me. I've been a law-abiding citizen all my twenty-six years, always helping others and fighting injustice as a righteous youth. I would never do anything wrong."
"I just... ah. Just."
"Just what?"
"I just feel like someone might be trying to kill me," Chen Shijin said, looking up with sincerity.
The two officers instantly grew serious.
"It started five days ago when my vision suddenly became blurry and I fell ill. Since then, I've encountered a series of accidents. If it happened once or twice, one could call it an accident, but... I assume you've already investigated me. The number of mishaps I've had in the past few days is just too many."
"And strangely, each of these accidents seems innocuous. Like the fire explosion upstairs, my neighbor intentionally pushing me down the stairs, Grandma neighbor poisoning my rice out of affection, Uncle neighbor mistakingly thinking I harmed Grandma and attacking me... and even two mentally ill individuals breaking into my room in the middle of the night with intentions to kill me."
With each word from Chen Shimin, the expressions of the two policemen grew increasingly peculiar.
They didn't realize it before, but now, it did seem rather... eerie.
"Even the most carefree person would start to doubt after experiencing all this. I genuinely feel like someone is lurking in the shadows, trying to kill me! Maybe it's related to my illness, or perhaps they injected me with some virus, or treated me as a test subject?"
"In any case, I no longer feel safe anywhere in this world."
"So, PLEASE!"
Chen Shimin looked earnestly at the two officers. "I have faith in Uncle Policeman and the power of the nation! I believe that as an upstanding citizen who has never done anything wrong, I can find protection within the police station!"
"There's nowhere else that feels safer than a police station! There won't be anyone there suddenly wanting to kill me! And if there is, there'll surely be dedicated Uncle Policemen to shield me from harm!"
"Thus, gentlemen!" Chen Shimin sat on the bed and held out his wrists resolutely. "Don't hesitate, take me to the station!"
"Only there can I find peace and tranquility!!"
The elderly man and the nurse, both wide-eyed with astonishment: !!
Two more stunned and stiffened police officers.
Indeed, in a large forest, all kinds of birds could be found; in a big hospital, all sorts of patients existed.
In all these years, they had never encountered such an enthusiastic and sincere applicant who wished to enter the station to have a taste of prison food.
"One, uh, we need some time to think about this..."
Chen Shijin said, "If both of you don't take the initiative to bring me along, I'll have to take matters into my own hands."
The two police officers: ???
Chen Shijin continued, "I might randomly damage some public facilities, set something on fire, or perhaps threaten to rob someone."
The two police officers: ??!!
Chen Shijin turned his head to look at the wide-eyed old man and the young nurse. He raised the black cat in his hand solemnly. "For example—"
"Old man, raise your hands. I'm going to rob you of all the money you have right now."
Two Policemen: !!!!
Policeman 1: What the heck is wrong with you? Do you know that you're openly threatening law enforcement? This is preposterous, using a black cat as a weapon!
Policeman 2: Haha, the funniest part is that the cat actually raised its paws menacingly, revealing its sharp claws!
Chen Shijin: "So, can you let me in now?"
The two policemen were almost amused by this young man's audacity. "Fine! You want to spend a few days in jail, don't you? We'll take you there right now!!"
Upon hearing this, Chen Shijin finally wore a relieved and content smile. Excellent. He didn't believe that the Big-Eyed Monster or the Spider Spirit could ambush him inside a police station.
"Please let me bring my megaphone, my milk-flavored instant noodles, and my hammer."
Policeman 1: "A hammer? No way! Absolutely not allowed!!!"
