Chapter 30: Rong Si IV
byChapter 30: Rong Si IV
When Prince Jingbei, Guo Shuji, arrived at the main courtyard of the inner chambers, he found that a remarkable transformation had taken place there, even though it was just daytime.
The main courtyard was named Harmony Light Court, and, befitting its status, it was exceedingly spacious. However, the Prince of Jingbei rarely ventured into the rear courtyard, preferring to reside mostly in his study located in the front. This area had primarily been inhabited by the former princess consort, who was known for her simple tastes, hence the courtyard reflected a similar modesty and frugality. It wasn't until the recent marriage to the new princess consort that the court underwent a renovation. Even then, the changes were limited to fresh coats of paint on the walls, doors, and windows, along with the replacement of furniture. These renovations were handled entirely by the senior secretaries of the prince's residence; Guo Shuji did not involve himself in these matters.
Yet, now the vacant courtyard has been filled with various items, unexpectedly adorned with a graceful white stone rockery. Red plum blossoms were planted along the wall, instantly infusing the yard with vitality and charm.
Somewhat taken aback, Guo Shuji stood beside the artificial mountain, observing it closely. The mountain was crafted from exquisite white stones, and at its base lay a clear pond filled with colorful carp swimming gracefully. On one side, several branches of plum blossoms were in full bloom, their vibrant flowers adding a touch of liveliness. Each of these plum trees was planted in a massive flower pot, yet despite the long journey, they remained resilient, continuing to bloom in all their glory.
Princess Yi Yang had already come out to greet him. Seeing him, she asked with a smile, "Does Your Highness like it?"
Guo Shuji hesitated for a moment. "Are these carp? It's so cold, and they've been transported all the way from the capital, yet they're still alive?" He had heard that Princess's dowry was grand, with a procession stretching for miles and including everything imaginable, but he never would have imagined that it included live carp.
Princess Yi Yang chuckled. "How could that be? We just brought over some artificial mountains, and the fish were purchased locally. They're cold-resistant koi, paired with plum blossoms for a lively scene. I prefer a place with a lively atmosphere, not a desolate one."
Guo Shuji smiled. "Princess speaks her mind candidly."
Princess Yi Yang maintained her smile, speaking frankly. "I suppose our interests don't align. I've heard that Your Highness has a study in the outer courtyard called Tong Chen Courtyard, and the main courtyard in the inner palace is called He Guang Courtyard, signifying 'harmony and humility, hidden ambition.' But for me, it's all about splendor and grandeur, making my time on this earth truly worthwhile."
With a subtle nod and a composed expression, Guo Shuji's gaze softened as he stepped into the arcade, heading towards the dining hall. A servant promptly drew back the curtains, releasing a waft of enticing aroma into the air.
Inside the chamber, Rong Bi was overseeing the maids as they tended to a steaming copper pot, insulated by layers of cotton wrapped around the charcoal beneath. The pot simmered with a rich, golden monkey head mushroom chicken soup. Rong Bi personally skimmed off the oil, leaving behind a clear, amber broth whose fragrance was utterly enchanting. Beside it rested a delicately steamed fish, drizzled with a tangy plum sauce. The Guangming prawns, a dish of enormous sea prawns grilled to perfection, were then sprinkled with precious spices from the Western regions, emitting an exotic aroma. Another dish featured steamed meat with monkey head mushrooms, within which nestled a lustrous, golden salted egg yolk at its core.
Seated across from Princess Yi Yang, Guo Shuji partook in their meal. After receiving the soup bowl and taking a sip, a soothing warmth spread through his stomach. Though he typically had modest culinary expectations, at that moment, he suddenly found the intricately seasoned food genuinely comforting to the soul.
He raised his gaze once more at the maid who had once shot down the dragon flag with a single arrow. Previously, she had been vibrant and valiant, like a sword freshly honed, her sharpness dazzling and irresistible. Now, she appeared meek and serene, as if two entirely different people.
Princess Yi Yang, too, rolled up her sleeves elegantly, maintaining a dignified demeanor as she partook in the meal. She slowly savored a spoonful of soup and then, with contentment softening her eyes, she smiled, saying, "This monkey head mushroom is still most delicious when paired with mutton broth. Let's use mutton next time. Given the chill of the present days, I believe the Prince will also find it agreeable."
Princess Yi Yang sampled each dish with patience, asking, "I've heard that Your Highness doesn't fancy fish and shrimp, finding them too fishy?"
Guo Shuji replied, "That's true, but the preparation of these seafood today is impeccable. There's not a hint of fishiness."
Princess Yi Yang chuckled. "Of course, there are always ways to deal with it. It seems Your Highness hasn't met a skilled chef yet."
Guo Shuji commented, "I suppose it's the effect of those expensive spices."
Princess Yi Yang smiled gently. "Indeed, black pepper is costly, and monkey head mushrooms are rare delicacies in the market. I hope Your Highness won't find my extravagance too excessive."
Guo Shuji remarked, "In this vast northern land, with the prestige of a princely estate, I, Guo, am not so impoverished as to be unable to provide for my wife. Princess, please feel free to do as you wish."
Princess Yi Yang smiled radiantly. "Your Highness is indeed generous."
Guo Shuji offered a slight smile. "I must thank Princess for your thoughtful consideration. Indeed, the monkey head mushroom soup served today is exquisite."
The couple sat facing each other, exchanging faint smiles. Princess Yi Yang was well aware that the monkey head mushroom Rong Bi had offered was medicinal, and the Duke's robust health was indeed priceless knowledge she possessed, as did the Duke himself. Presumably, he felt Rong Bi to be a confidant, and her attitude mirrored his own. Thus, he was exceptionally gracious, practicing the art of reciprocity—a promising start indeed. At least on the surface, maintaining basic respect and mutual esteem would allow for the days to proceed smoothly. With the title of Duchess at her disposal, she could wield greater influence.
After all, in this world, a woman's dignity often comes from her father, husband, and son. No matter how unwilling she was, she had to yield to the rules.
Rong Bi indeed proved to be a fortunate general, a thought suddenly occurred to her.
After dinner, Guo Shuji retired to rest in the Hall of Harmony and Light.
Since Rong Bi had been relieved of her close attendance duties, she found herself with some idle time, pondering over her next assignment in her chamber.
Hong Ying and Bai Ying were martial maids sent by Princess Yi Yang. Hong Ying informed her, "Princess has said that you may consider managing a shop. She has already arranged for the purchase of shops in Wuwei City and nearby Fufeng City. The plan is to invest in properties across the thirteen northern states. The guards will all heed your commands."
Rong Bi was taken aback but quickly grasped the situation. This was actually Princess Yi Yang's arrangement for the Crown Prince. Eunuchs and female officials were confined to the inner court and could offer no assistance to the prince there. It was only through external affairs that he could exert his greatest influence. And for that, he would need an appropriate identity. Managing a dowry shop was a coveted post, one that only a trusted confidante of the lady of the house could undertake.
She gratefully acknowledged that her good fortune was owed to the Crown Prince, but for the time being, she couldn't fathom what sort of livelihood she would pursue. She still favored the tranquility of her former life and was even concerned about the leek roots that she had just instructed to be planted in Han Palace.
Bai Ying smiled and said to her, "Princess mentioned that you can choose any business you fancy—jewelry, silk, or even a restaurant."
Rong Bi said, "I'd like to try growing my own monkey mushroom." The words tumbled out of her almost involuntarily, and she immediately felt a touch of embarrassment at her childish notion.
A rare delicacy like the monkey head mushroom would naturally pique the interest of common folk who might attempt to cultivate it. However, as it has always been regarded as the most precious of treasures, none have succeeded in cultivating it.
Hong Ying and Bai Ying exchanged glances, clearly both surprised by the turn of events. But before attending to Rong Bi, the princess had instructed them to serve her with the same devotion they would show the princess herself, considering Rong Bi their true mistress. They were sworn to protect her at all costs and obey her every command without question.
They merely chuckled and replied, "Very well, we'll start making inquiries tomorrow and see what preparations are needed."
The next day, as promised, a steward came to report on several available shops and manors, along with their deeds. The princess, in her grandeur, purchased them all without hesitation. Rong Bi took her time to examine the details of several manors. She noticed that in Jingbei, there were more mountains than arable land, and most of the properties were actually mountain villas. After some thoughtful consideration, she proposed visiting one of these villas.
Bai Ying promptly agreed, "Certainly, I'll arrange for the carriage immediately."
Rong Bi was taken aback, "Shouldn't we inform the princess first?"
Hong Ying smiled, "Princess has already given her instructions. You're in charge of managing these affairs and can leave the palace at any time. She's asked us to follow your arrangements. Even the personal guard unit has been instructed to accompany you whenever you venture out."
Rong Bi understood. This was still the treatment of a prince, but it was for her convenience. A thrill of excitement stirred in her heart. After all, she had spent too many years confined within the palace walls, from the imperial palace to the princess's residence, and now in this far-off northern land. She had always felt like a prisoner. Now, she had the privilege to come and go freely!
Bai Ying brought out a set of nomadic attire and asked, "Shall we wear this when we venture out tomorrow? It'll be more convenient for movement."
Rong Bi glanced at the outfit, which featured exquisite qilin embroidery on black fabric, with white fox fur trimming the edges, accompanied by a silver fox cloak. She realized it must have been made from the princess's materials. Presumably, after the prince confessed to his elder sister, the princess had upgraded her status – naturally, as part of the prince's entourage.
Rong Bi considered for a moment before suggesting, "This fabric would be more suitable for a man's robe. Alter it into men's clothing. From now on, I'll wear male attire whenever I travel outside. Make me a few more sets."
Bai Ying was taken aback, but Rong Bi continued, "It shouldn't be too difficult, right?" Although she worked in the Imperial Kitchen, she knew that altering a garment's style wasn't a daunting task.
Bai Ying quickly reassured her with a smile, "Not at all, we'll start modifying it immediately."
Rong Bi knew it would take some time, but setting these rules in place would make future outings smoother. The princess had granted her the freedom to leave the residence for the prince's sake, facilitating his travels in the future. As a man, the prince would adhere to male etiquette in his interactions. Thus, it would be more convenient for him to present himself as a man in public.
And for her, this was an opportunity to attend to her own affairs.
After all, this was her chance.
Princess Yi Yang soon received the report about Rong Bi's desire to travel in men's clothes. After a moment of surprise, she smiled slightly and nodded, "Very sensible. Do as she says. Tomorrow, measure her for a tailored set of men's clothing and boots. Make sure they're ready promptly."
After giving her instructions, she pondered for a moment and then smiled, saying, "Truly an intelligent one." She added further, "Inform the Imperial Guard unit that from now on, they are to address Lady Rong as Lord Rong the Fourth when outside the palace walls. To outsiders, simply mention that she is a distant relative from my maternal family's side."
