"Zheng Jinxiu."
Her angry shout silenced the room, drowning out all the laughter.
The room fell silent as everyone turned to look at Wang Fuzhen.
Zheng Jinxiu raised an eyebrow and smiled. "What’s wrong, Zhenzhen? On such a joyous day, you should control your temper."
"Hmph." Wang Fuzhen laughed. "I was thinking that even if I wanted to see you suffer, I would still have to consider everyone else’s face and not cause trouble today. But you’ve pushed me too far. Do you really think I’m easy to bully?"
"Oh, where did this come from? Ever since we both entered the Lu family, I’ve been avoiding you, fearing that your temper might harm Ning'er."
Zheng Jinxiu wasn’t foolish; everyone knew Wang Fuzhen had a bad temper.
Back then, she was pregnant and truly avoided Wang Fuzhen to ensure the safety of her child. She feared that any conflict might harm the baby.
Given Wang Fuzhen’s status, if anything happened to her child, her own family would protect her, leaving her child’s fate uncertain.
Now, she wasn’t afraid anymore because she had already given birth.
Others chimed in, "Zhenzhen, you two used to be so close. It’s not worth fighting over a man. Jinxiu said she wouldn’t vie for favor, so let it go."
Wang Fuzhen’s face turned pale with anger, realizing these fools were being manipulated by Zheng Jinxiu, the actress.
"When have I ever competed with her? As if she’s worthy."
No one believed Wang Fuzhen; they thought she was just being stubborn. If not for competing for favor, why argue?
However, no one said anything more because they understood Wang Fuzhen’s frustration.
After all, Zheng Jinxiu had already given birth, while Wang Fuzhen hadn’t shown any signs yet. Anyone would feel upset in her position.
Seeing their faces, especially Zheng Jinxiu’s, Wang Fuzhen couldn’t hold back her anger.
She sneered and looked at Zheng Jinxiu. "On such a wonderful day, why haven’t any of the Zhengs come?"
Zheng Jinxiu’s smile faltered.
"Hmph, could it be they’ve disowned you? Can you even call yourself a Zheng anymore?"
Wang Fuzhen had received news that the Zheng family had severed ties with Zheng Jinxiu, though it wasn’t public yet.
Today, no one from the Zheng family came, and they even made up excuses to avoid attending. She knew all about it.
She didn’t mention it earlier due to some reservations.
Ruining today’s full moon banquet would surely bring consequences from Old Master Lu.
But Zheng Jinxiu had pushed her too far, so she wouldn’t hesitate to ruin her joyous day.
Zheng Jinxiu’s friends looked at her in surprise, while she bit her lip before saying, "Who said they didn’t come? I just saw my mother. She has a rash on her face and can’t meet people, so I arranged for her to rest in the guest room."
"Hmph, who are you trying to fool?" Wang Fuzhen mocked. "I heard that Lord Zheng found himself an assignment outside the city, and the two Zheng brothers were left behind to copy books at the Imperial Academy. How convenient, right? Who would do this unless asked?"
Zheng Jinxiu clenched her fists in anger.
How did she know? How could she know?
Wang Fuzhen smiled and continued, "As for Lady Zheng, I heard she is indeed ill. Concubine Luo went early in the morning to fetch a doctor for Lady Zheng. How coincidental, isn’t it? It seems almost deliberate."
Zheng Jinxiu’s face turned grim, and others were equally shocked.
The room fell silent.
After a moment, Zheng Jinxiu suddenly laughed. "You don’t believe me? Fine, then I’ll show you my mother and prove she hasn’t abandoned me."
Zheng Jinxiu called over Nurse Zhou and instructed her to invite Lady Zheng.
Lady Zheng, unaware of what was happening, followed Nurse Zhou secretly.
"Jinxiu, I heard you..." She opened the door and realized there were many people inside.
Lady Zheng froze.
Zheng Jinxiu smiled warmly and quickly embraced her arm. "Mother, you’re finally here. Please, take a seat."
Wang Fuzhen frowned slightly, wondering if Lady Zheng had really come.
Though she wore a hood, Wang Fuzhen recognized her voice immediately—it was indeed Lady Zheng.
Lady Zheng was terrified and whispered to Zheng Jinxiu, "Didn’t I say I couldn’t meet anyone? You silly child, why didn’t you tell me there were so many people here?"
Zheng Jinxiu smiled. "It’s fine, Mother. You have a rash, I know. Just keep your veil on, and no one will see you."
Lady Zheng felt exasperated. Was that the point?
She couldn’t let anyone know she had sneaked out the back door and come to the Lu family.
If Old Master Zheng found out, who knows what would happen.
She was truly worried.
"Sigh!" Well, it was her fault for not explaining clearly to Jinxiu.
"Now that you’ve seen me, I’ll leave. Excuse me, but my rash might be contagious. It wouldn’t be good if I spread it to you."
Everyone took a few steps back, afraid of being infected.
Zheng Jinxiu quickly released her arm.
Madam Zheng hurriedly left.
But just as she stepped out, someone stopped her.
"Madam, since you're here, why not stay for dinner?"
Madam Zheng was stunned.
Lord Zheng glared at her coldly. "Madam, where are you going?"
"L-Lord, why are you here?" Madam Zheng's voice dropped significantly, and she stood to the side timidly.
In an instant, two groups of people gathered in the corridor.
Along with Lord Zheng, several colleagues from the government were present, including Lord Lu, Wang Fuzhen's father, and the Xie brothers.
Zheng Jinxiu followed them out, almost calling out "Father."
Seeing that Lord Zheng's expression was off, she held back.
On the second floor of the waterside pavilion opposite, the Princess smiled and asked the county lady to open the window wider.
She wanted not only to hear the gossip but also to see it unfold.
The Princess leaned half her body on the windowsill, quietly observing the crowd below.
Lord Zheng sneered, "If I hadn't come, how could I have run into you, Madam?"
Madam Zheng took a deep breath, struggling to keep her composure.
Lord Zheng looked her up and down, mocking, "Since you're sick, you should be resting at home. Why do you insist on coming out and causing trouble?"
These words infuriated Madam Zheng. She retorted coldly, "And what about you? You only know how to criticize me. You said you were going outside the city to handle official business today. How did you end up here?"
Lord Zheng's face turned livid, and he snorted, "Of course, I have something important to announce today."
Madam Zheng suddenly realized what he was about to say and rushed forward to stop him. "Whatever it is, let's discuss it when we get home. Please, at least not today."
