Chapter 29 Arrival at Shufu Town

Six hours later, the convoy left the national highway and entered Shujiang Province. Traces of the military's battle with zombies still marred the road surface, and apart from the sound of the convoy's tires rolling over the ground, there was nothing but silence around them.

After a while, Shenchi suddenly opened his eyes. At the same moment, a voice came through the vehicle's intercom: "Captain! A small group of infected has appeared one hundred meters ahead! Ninety-eight ordinary infected, thirteen level-one infected!"

Deng Hu: "First and second platoons, prepare for combat! Ability users and Self-defense Corps, be on alert! Machine gunners, get ready! Countdown for all—5... 4... 3... 2... 1... Action!"

The moving vehicles suddenly braked, and gunfire erupted ahead. Shenchi and the members of the Self-defense Corps quickly got out of the vehicles as more than a hundred zombies rushed towards them. The first vehicle was already surrounded, with most of the zombies dying within five meters of it.

The Self-defense Corps were positioned behind the ability users' vehicle, so ordinary zombies couldn't reach them. However, a level-one zombie managed to break through the line and lunged at a soldier. Just as its sharp claws were about to slash the soldier's artery, a hand grabbed him from behind and pulled him back at incredible speed. Before anyone could marvel at the speed, another strength-type ability user punched the level-one zombie, sending it flying dozens of meters away!

Apart from the level-one zombies, which required some effort, the two ability users on the second line handled the rest easily, leaving the others untouched by the zombies.

Shenchi helped pile the corpses by the roadside, while specialized personnel dealt with the bodies, and the medical team disinfected the area.

Twenty minutes later, the convoy continued its journey.

At 10:33 AM, the convoy arrived at Shufu Town. A red prohibition symbol sprayed on the road sign indicated that the situation here was dire.

Five minutes earlier, they had encountered another wave of zombies, but since there were only a dozen ordinary ones, the soldiers in front took care of them with silenced guns.

Shufu Town, located at the intersection of three provinces, was known for its convenient transportation and beautiful scenery, including an AAA-rated scenic area.

The town's rivers crisscrossed the area, and the national highway passed through the southwestern part, leading many survivors to flee here before being trapped by zombies.

As the vehicles moved forward, the battered appearance of Shufu Town gradually came into view. This once-green town now bore the marks of devastation.

The road became bumpy, and Deng Hu's voice came over the intercom: "Everyone, prepare for combat in five minutes!"

In the time it took to say those words, those with keen hearing could already hear intense gunfire ahead.

Deng Hu: "Check your equipment! Prepare to charge through!"

The gunfire grew closer, and the machine guns and small-caliber cannons on the armored vehicles began firing along the road. Someone shouted loudly up ahead.

Shenchi opened the observation window and saw two people in camouflage running on the road, carrying large backpacks. Despite their heavy loads, they moved swiftly.

A horde of zombies followed them, but since they were all ordinary zombies, and the town was filled with obstacles, the zombies couldn't catch them immediately.

However, in the next instant, a zombie suddenly lunged at one of the runners!

The soldier reacted incredibly fast, stopping, turning, lifting his leg, and stepping aside in a series of fluid movements. Yet, the zombie was faster, grabbing the soldier's backpack and shredding it, scattering instant noodles, chocolate, bread, tissues, medicine, and water bottles everywhere. The soldier was thrown against a telephone pole!

The other soldier, seeing this, turned to run back, but he couldn't outrun the level-two zombie.

In the blink of an eye, the level-two zombie appeared in front of the soldier, its hands poised to tear him apart. The soldier rolled on the ground and kicked the zombie's legs hard.

The zombie knelt down, and the telephone pole crashed to the ground. The zombie withdrew its fingers and pounced on the soldier.

The soldier leaped onto the approaching soldier's hand and kicked the zombie's neck with explosive force!

Such a kick would have broken a human's spine instantly, but against the zombie, it did no damage. Instead, the zombie grabbed the soldier's ankle and tried to bite it.

Another soldier jumped onto the zombie's shoulders and stabbed a fruit knife into its mouth.

Everything happened too quickly. As the zombie crushed the fruit knife, hundreds of zombies swarmed forward, engulfing the two soldiers!

    "Bang—!"

Flames shot up, and deafening gunfire echoed, splattering blood everywhere!

"Everyone, get out and start fighting!"

Deng Hu shouted over the radio: "First and second platoons, break through! Ability users, handle any high-level zombies that slip through! Machine gunners, provide cover! Self-defense Corps, search for survivors! Medical team, rescue the wounded!"

As soon as the vehicles stopped, Shenchi put on an anti-pollution mask and rushed out. The stench of rotting corpses filled his nostrils, and he heard occasional retching and cursing from behind.

Shenchi stabbed a zombie's forehead with a triangular bayonet and kicked the corpse away. His strength had noticeably increased compared to half a month ago.

Behind him, other members of the Self-defense Corps also wielded their prepared weapons. Most had military-issued firearms holstered to deal with emergencies.

On the left, most of the zombies surrounding the soldiers were eliminated by gunfire. The remaining zombies lunged at the approaching soldiers, while the powerful level-two zombie engaged Cao Kun.

Cao Kun's current level was too low; his fire couldn't kill the level-two zombie.

Just as Shenchi was about to help, a head suddenly emerged from behind the level-two zombie. It was a woman with a sharp, fearless face who threw a rope around the zombie's neck. She then retreated rapidly, kicking off the remains of a telephone pole, temporarily immobilizing the zombie.

Cao Kun seized the opportunity, enveloping the zombie's head in flames. The zombie's mouth dropped the shattered knife pieces. Just as they were about to kill the zombie, Cao Kun suddenly heard Shenchi's voice.

    "—Be careful!"

Another level-two zombie lunged at Cao Kun's neck, but he dodged by turning his head.

Cao Kun's distraction weakened the flames, allowing the zombie to break free and turn towards the short-haired woman.

Before she could react, the zombie pounced on her at lightning speed!

Shenchi threw his triangular bayonet, embedding it a third of the way into the zombie's head. He then ran and kicked the zombie's back, pinning it down. Using a homemade claw, he easily extracted the level-two crystal core and ran towards where Cao Kun had disappeared.

In the alley, flames flickered as Cao Kun leaped onto the wall and spun around, hurling a massive fireball at the zombie's head!

The level-two zombie was smashed into the wall, creating a huge hole.

Cao Kun landed, rolling to avoid injuring his right hand again. As he was about to stand up, a shadow streaked out of the hole and lunged at him. At the last moment, he heard a shout: "Move!"

    "Whoosh!"

An ice pillar, slicing with frigid wind blades, struck the head of the Level Two zombie, causing it to stumble.

The scorching heat at forty-seven degrees made the ice pillar drip water, which quickly froze into thick layers of frost wherever it touched. The puddle under the zombie's feet turned into a twenty-centimeter-thick block of ice.

Cao Kun's eyes lit up, and he whistled like a hooligan: "Nice!"

But this still couldn't stop the zombie's desire to fly.

Before the zombie could move again, Cao Kun and Shenchi attacked together; one kicked its head, the other its kneecap. As the zombie fell, an ice arrow and a fire dragon simultaneously flew towards it—the ice arrow pierced the spot it had missed earlier, pinning the zombie in place, while the fire dragon engulfed the Level Two zombie's head in flames.

The sound of running footsteps approached. Without waiting for the fire to continue burning, Shenchi stabbed the already softened zombie's skull with a triangular bayonet, extracted the crystal core, and tossed it to Cao Kun, "This one's for you."

Cao Kun caught it and examined it. Unlike the previous one, this crystal was blue, heavy, clean, and beautiful.

Hearing the footsteps draw closer, he waved his hand, melting the ice blocks away, as Shenchi didn't want others to know he was a psychic.

"Are you guys okay!?" the newcomer asked them, followed by the woman from before. She wasn't a great beauty but had striking features, long limbs, and short hair. Dressed in a tank top, long pants, and Martin boots, she was ruthless when killing zombies.

Seeing that they were fine, she didn't wait for an answer and turned to leave.

Cao Kun and Shenchi rejoined the group. According to the two soldiers they had rescued, they were special forces from the 222nd Corps, tasked with rescuing survivors along the highway. However, they were pursued by a high-level zombie halfway through, resulting in many casualties. They ended up hiding in this town and sending out distress signals to nearby troops.

They hid in a dormitory building of a technical school, where all the water sources were contaminated. They scavenged the entire building for food, accumulating over a hundred kilograms.

However, their numbers were too large, and the food and water stored in the dormitory wouldn't last more than a few days. They had no choice but to risk venturing out for supplies.

This was extremely dangerous, as there were no less than five thousand zombies surrounding the technical school, including even higher-level ones.

Level Two zombies had only appeared in the past two days, leaving them both relieved and desperate.
