Chapter 9: The Adopted Daughter of a Wealthy Family Leaks Telepathy 9 The Cheap Sister is So Generous…
byChapter 9: The Wealthy Family's Adopted Daughter Reveals Her Thoughts 9
Xu Ziyan was exhausted after having fun all afternoon. As soon as she got into Fu Qiming's car, she fell asleep, driving Fu Qiming crazy with impatience, desperate to shake her awake and demand an explanation. But Xu Ziyan slept soundly, undisturbed even by the honking of cars behind them.
Fu Qiming wanted to ask her—how could she trust him so easily when they barely knew each other after her transmigration? Wasn’t she afraid he might sell her off?
No matter how anxious Fu Qiming was, he got no answers during the ride. Fortunately, as soon as they arrived home, they encountered Fu Yazhen and Zheng Wenbo.
Fu Yazhen’s car was parked in front of theirs, and Zheng Wenbo carefully helped her out as if she were a delicate porcelain doll.
Fu Yazhen smiled helplessly. "I’m not even two months along yet. There’s no need to be so cautious."
"Some women experience discomfort early in pregnancy, so it’s better to be careful. Was the long ride uncomfortable? Any back pain?" Zheng Wenbo’s concern was evident.
He had pursued Fu Yazhen for a long time before finally winning her over and had always cherished her, earning a reputation as a devoted husband. In the year since their marriage, his care for her had been meticulous and tender. Fu Qiming couldn’t see how such a man could be a scumbag.
Suddenly, Xu Ziyan’s inner voice chimed in: *"Wow, his acting skills—honed by practicing in front of a mirror every day—are truly Oscar-worthy. If all actors put in as much effort as this scumbag brother-in-law, awards would be lining up!"*
Fu Yazhen paused, turning back with a searching look in her eyes. Her mother had mentioned the "inner voice" phenomenon over the phone, but hearing it firsthand still felt surreal—it seemed impossible.
Fu Qiming quickly stepped forward. "Sis, come on, let’s go inside. Mom and Dad are waiting."
Zheng Wenbo was surprised to see Xu Ziyan following Fu Qiming. The siblings had always been like oil and water—what had brought them together? Clearly, something had happened while he was away on vacation.
He smiled. "Ziyan, Qiming, out for fun?"
He tried to exchange a glance with Xu Ziyan, but though she noticed, she ignored him. Instead, she gave Fu Yazhen a polite smile before walking past them into the house. But her thoughts were anything but calm.
*"Agh! Zheng Wenbo was actually set up by the original host! She’d long suspected his ill intentions but, out of jealousy toward Fu Yazhen, deliberately leaked her whereabouts so Zheng Wenbo could ‘save’ her and tailored his behavior to Fu Yazhen’s preferences. If not for the original host’s meddling, the cool-as-ice sister would’ve never looked twice at Zheng Wenbo!"*
Zheng Wenbo was used to Xu Ziyan’s bratty attitude at home and assumed she’d had another fight with Fu Qiming. Noticing Fu Yazhen’s slight change in expression, he quickly took her hand. "Let’s go inside and rest. I’ll ask Aunt Chen to make you some warm soup to soothe your stomach."
Fu Yazhen nodded, her mind in turmoil though her expression remained composed. This Xu Ziyan was indeed not the same person—her gaze was different, her attitude toward Fu Yazhen had shifted from hostility to polite but distant.
If the so-called "inner voice" was real, it meant Zheng Wenbo had approached her with ulterior motives from the start. Their two-year relationship—one year of courtship and one year of marriage—had all been a lie.
When she turned and saw Zheng Wenbo’s affectionate expression, her blood ran cold. The thought that the person closest to her had been acting all along was the most terrifying thing she’d ever heard.
Seeing everyone sitting in the living room, Xu Ziyan hesitated before joining them. The Fu family had treated her well, so while she could get away with being rude to Ding Jie and Zheng Wenbo, she remained courteous toward them.
Fu Dongfeng, the calmest of them all, praised Zheng Wenbo. "While traveling, Yazhen relied entirely on your care. Seeing how attentive you are to her reassures us."
Li Yunhui chimed in, "Yes, Yazhen is truly lucky to have met you. You risked your life to save her from that car accident, and now you take such good care of her. We may not say it often, but we’re deeply grateful."
Zheng Wenbo assumed they were being sentimental because of Fu Yazhen’s pregnancy and smiled. "Saving her was the least I could do—I fell for Yazhen at first sight and couldn’t bear to see her hurt. And after finally winning her heart, of course I’d spend my life treating her well."
He took Fu Yazhen’s hand and grinned. "Mom, Dad, don’t worry. With me around, Yazhen will always be comfortable. Once the baby arrives, I’ll take care of everything so she won’t have to lift a finger."
*"Pfft! You’re the one who tampered with the car to make it crash, then swooped in to ‘rescue’ her—directing your own little drama. And now you have the nerve to play the savior, making Yazhen feel indebted to you?"*
*"You swapped her vitamins for birth control pills because you thought she wasn’t worthy of carrying your child. Now that she’s accidentally pregnant, you must be furious, huh? Still pretending, I see."*
*"Let me check… Wow, this scumbag brother-in-law assumed the pills would harm the fetus and was hoping for a deformity to devastate the Fu family. But when the prenatal tests came back normal, he decided to push Yazhen off the cruise ship instead."*
*"She nearly drowned, delivered a stillborn, and slipped into a vegetative state, while Mr. and Mrs. Fu fell gravely ill. Ugh, why was the original host the one who conspired with him to get Yazhen on that ship? Why am I involved in everything?"*
"I can't take this plot even a little! By this calculation, I have at most five months left."
Five months—when the fetus would be six and a half months old, already fully formed. How could Zheng Wenbo bring himself to do such a thing?
Fu Yazhen felt like she'd fallen into an ice cellar, accidentally knocking over her cup.
Zheng Wenbo quickly took her hand to check, "Luckily you weren’t hurt. Are you tired from the flight? Maybe you should go lie down for a bit."
The Fu family, worried that Fu Yazhen might be too overwhelmed—especially given her pregnancy—were about to urge her to rest when she said, "It's fine. I want to talk with Mom and Dad for a while. By the way, you’ve never looked for your biological family before. Now that we’re expecting, would you consider hiring a private investigator to try and find them?"
Zheng Wenbo, who had grown up in an orphanage, nearly lost his composure at her words. He hurriedly replied, "Look for what? They abandoned me, which means we were never meant to be. I won’t look for them. Let me go get the gifts. Mom, Dad, Yazhen brought back lots of gifts for you."
The luggage had already been taken upstairs by the servants. Zheng Wenbo excused himself to fetch the gifts, deftly avoiding the topic of his family.
Xu Ziyan drank her coffee boredly while reviewing the plot. "His father was Zheng Liqiang, the manager of the Fu family’s branch company twenty years ago. Zheng Liqiang was imprisoned and died of illness, while his wife, unable to repay their debts, committed suicide by jumping off a building. With her dying breath, she told Zheng Wenbo that their family’s suffering was entirely the Fu family’s fault—that Mr. Fu had broken the law, framed Zheng Liqiang, and driven them to their deaths.
So, from a young age, Zheng Wenbo carried this blood feud. He faked being lost, went to the police station claiming he couldn’t remember his family, and since there were no fingerprints or records to identify him, the authorities had no choice but to send him to an orphanage.
All these years, Zheng Wenbo kept his eyes on the Fu family, becoming their son-in-law and biding his time for revenge.
Ding Jie, thinking the original host was too demanding and hard to control, would soon approach Zheng Wenbo. The two would immediately join forces, and with the original host’s cooperation, they would deal a crushing blow to the Fu family.
In truth, Zheng Wenbo was also using the original host. Twenty years ago, he lost his parents and became an orphan, while the original host, despite losing hers, became the Fu family’s second daughter, living a life of luxury. He thought she was poisonous and stupid, so he manipulated her, driving a wedge between her and the Fu family, and dragging her into every scheme."
Xu Ziyan shuddered. "Ruthless. Absolutely ruthless. No wonder wealthy families aren’t for commoners like me. It’s all treachery and murder without bloodshed."
Li Yunhui and Fu Yazhen made small talk about their trip, but in reality, everyone was listening to Xu Ziyan’s inner monologue. When she mentioned Zheng Liqiang from the branch company, Fu Dongfeng immediately recalled the incident.
Back then, with the country encouraging economic development, he had opened several branch companies, all thriving. At the height of his success, one of the branches ran into trouble—the manager embezzled funds and signed several loss-making contracts under the company’s name, nearly bringing down the main company.
After a thorough investigation, Fu Dongfeng discovered Zheng Liqiang had been acting on the Ding family’s behalf. The Ding family’s underhanded tactics naturally drew fierce retaliation from him. As for Zheng Liqiang, he reported him to the authorities, landing him in prison. Little did he know Zheng Liqiang was already terminally ill and died shortly after incarceration.
Because the discovery was timely, Zheng Liqiang’s wife hadn’t had the chance to transfer their assets, and all their money was recovered. Rumor had it the Ding family blamed Zheng Liqiang for their financial losses and sought retribution.
At the time, Fu Dongfeng was preoccupied with restructuring the company when Xu Ziyan’s family was involved in a car accident during a trip. Only their two-year-old child survived. Out of gratitude for her grandfather, who had once saved Fu Dongfeng’s father during his exile, the Fu family adopted Xu Ziyan. Their attention shifted entirely to her, and the Zheng family matter was forgotten.
Who knew Zheng Wenbo was Zheng Liqiang’s son, convinced the Fu family had destroyed his family? Absurd!
Fu Qiming, seething with anger, was about to storm off and confront Zheng Wenbo when Fu Yazhen swiftly stopped him. "You’ve been fighting with Ziyan lately and even wanted to kick her out. Don’t let outsiders come between family. Twenty years as siblings can’t be broken so easily."
She took out her checkbook and wrote two checks. "Mom mentioned you both suffered some losses. Here, take this money to spend. Don’t make a scene and give outsiders a reason to laugh."
At twenty-eight, six years older than Xu Ziyan, Fu Yazhen had never been close to her sister. Whenever the original host made trouble, Fu Yazhen would buy peace with pocket money. But this time, the money was an unspoken thank-you for revealing the truth. Giving too much would be suspicious, so she started with a portion.
Xu Ziyan took the check and gasped. "Wow! Ten million! That’s way more than the occasional three or five hundred thousand. Huh? This wasn’t in the original plot."
The others tensed, fearing she might catch on, until Xu Ziyan thought to herself, "It must be because I told Fu Qiming about Li Dong and refused to help Ding Jie. They think I’ve turned over a new leaf, so they’re rewarding me.
Mrs. Fu gave me ten million, and I already had ten million. Add this, and I’ve got thirty million in assets! Wait, there’s also a villa, two apartments, a luxury car, and a pile of expensive jewelry! I’m crazy rich!
001, I take back what I said earlier. Wealthy families are perfect for me. Let me stay here and live out my days as a pampered heiress!"
001: "Host, can’t you be more ambitious?"
"Nope. Being crushed by money is ten thousand times better than dying miserably on the streets. I’ve decided—I’m staying. I’ll plant myself in the Fu family and enjoy the rest of my life!"
Xu Ziyan quickly pocketed the check and flashed her most genuine smile. "Thanks, sis. I’ll go get you some sweet soup."
As she hurried to the kitchen, she kept thinking to herself, "Since my generous sister is so kind, I can’t just stand by and watch her get hurt. But how do I warn her that her husband is a scumbag?
He’s such a good actor—no one would believe me. If I admit I was in cahoots with him, would they turn on me first? Besides, I don’t have proof.
Maybe I can use Li Dong’s shady behavior as an excuse to get them to vet everyone around them? That could work. Let’s do it!"
Li Yunhui patted Fu Yazhen’s hand in silent comfort. Fu Yazhen exhaled deeply and turned to Zheng Wenbo, who was approaching with gifts, her expression gradually returning to its usual calm.
No matter what, now that she had the upper hand, the outcome between her and Zheng Wenbo would be hers to decide.
