Chapter 40
by 逢春北望Chapter 40
This scene was nothing short of miraculous; even having seen it with their own eyes, they could barely believe it.
Not only could the guy make people vanish and reappear, he could also move stuff out of thin air—that kind of power was... just insane.
Xie Licheng moved everything in one trip, then took the old doctor over to the Gu place.
The old doctor's family had four people in it: the old doctor, his wife, his son, and a granddaughter.
The old doctor's son had split from his husband.
The clinic used to have two apprentices, but since Lingzhou City had suddenly gone to hell, the old doctor had sent them packing.
When the old man was brought in to check Xuan Cui's wounds, he still hadn't wrapped his head around what was going on.
He was still trying to figure out where the hell he was, but once he saw how bad Xuan Cui's condition was, he had to put that aside to save a life.
Gu Zhangyuan stayed by Xuan Cui's side and didn't go back out with Xie Licheng.
He had to find a place for the old doctor's family to stay and also bring the old doctor around to treat the other injured.
Since things here couldn't run without him, he couldn't keep going out with Xie Licheng anymore.
Xie Licheng thought this was perfect—having Gu Zhangyuan around made him too careful. Now that Gu Zhangyuan was happy to stay in the pocket dimension, it was the best thing for him.
When Xie Licheng stepped out of the pocket dimension, he planned to head back to the Gu place first to see what was up.
But just as he hit the street where the Gu place was, he ran into two guys who looked pretty familiar.
The two spotted him too and immediately walked over, knives out.
Seeing them gripping their knives, Xie Licheng couldn't help but smirk a little.
Honestly, he'd only come out today to find the Gu family's secret room and track down a doctor.
He wanted to grab as much good stuff as he could for his wife before the Gu family's things were all carted off.
But he hadn't expected to run into familiar faces so fast—and ones he didn't get along with, no less.
Both of them were low-tier male slaves who used to share a room with the original owner of this body.
One of them was a tiny little guy—the one who'd drenched Xie Licheng's bedding with water.
Xie Licheng remembered him clearly, because the guy had also tried to hit on Gu Zhangyuan.
Xie Licheng had always figured he was pretty confident, but he never thought anyone could be even cockier than him, so that guy had left a real lasting impression.
The other was the square-faced one. Before Xie Licheng transmigrated here, he'd been the main bully of the original owner.
After Xie Licheng showed up, he still liked to lead the charge in messing with him.
This guy was like those schoolyard types who loved to gang up and pick on people.
Tsk, tsk.
Talk about running into your worst enemies.
Now that the Gu family had fallen apart, these two actually hadn't bolted.
With knives in their hands and clothes that weren't the Gu family's slave uniforms, had they hooked up with those bandits or what?
Before Xie Licheng could think it over any more, the little guy pointed at him and shouted, "You! Stop right there!"
Xie Licheng stopped right where he was and even raised both hands in surrender like a good boy.
Seeing that, the little guy grinned and walked over, saying, "Well, well—didn't think you were still kicking."
Xie Licheng copied his tone and shot back, "Well, well—so you've hooked up with the bandits?"
The square-faced one barked, "What bandits? We've hooked up with the government—we're big shots now!"
By then, they'd reached Xie Licheng. The little guy pointed at him and said, "Hand over all the good stuff you're carrying, or don't blame us for getting rough."
They'd never liked Xie Licheng anyway, and now that they had the chance, they were dying to mess with him any way they could.
Hearing that, Xie Licheng looked totally clueless. "Don't you know anything about me?"
The little guy looked confused. "Know what?"
Xie Licheng had figured that after everything that went down—with the bandits, the authorities, or the Gu family—everyone would know who he was by now. But he hadn't counted on these two still being in the dark.
Xie Licheng sighed and closed the gap to the little guy in three quick steps.
Before the guy could react, he easily swiped the knife right out of his hand.
Xie Licheng held up the guy's blade and looked it over. "Pretty basic knife. Ever killed anyone with it?"
The little guy froze for a second, then instinctively tried to back away—but the next moment, he hit the ground stiff as a board.
He probably died never believing that the guy they used to push around could now kill him so easily.
Seeing that, the square-faced guy who came with the little one hurriedly raised his knife and swung at Xie Licheng.
Xie Licheng shot him a look, then cursed.
"Dumbass!"
Couldn't he tell they were outmatched? Why was he still dumb enough to charge in and get himself killed?
He was starting to think this guy had a few screws loose.
With that thought, Xie Licheng cut him down quick and clean.
If this were still the apocalypse, he'd have taken his sweet time torturing someone he hated.
But not now—now he had too much to do and no time to mess around with them.
After taking both guys down, Xie Licheng stripped them of their stuff.
Nothing those two had on them was actually theirs.
Thanks to their new gig with the bandits, they'd probably done plenty of shady shit over the last couple days.
Because when he searched them, he found not just a woman's gold bracelet but also a sachet embroidered with lotus flowers.
He stashed the loot in the pocket dimension, keeping only the miao dao he usually carried, then headed for the Gu place.
There weren't many people left at the Gu place now. When Xie Licheng walked in, he only saw a few shady figures lurking around.
Were they Gu family servants, or outsiders who'd broken in to steal something?
Seeing how scared they all were of him, Xie Licheng didn't bother chasing them down to kill them.
He headed straight to the back courtyard, making his way to Gu Zhangyuan's place first.
Gu Zhangyuan had told him that besides the main secret chamber, there was another hidden room in his quarters.
That hidden room was Gu Zhangyuan's, and he'd stashed a bunch of valuable paintings and precious jewelry in there.
Xie Licheng figured that since he was already here, he might as well not leave any of it behind.
Anything Gu Zhangyuan had carefully treasured must be stuff he really loved, so Xie Licheng decided to help him pack it all up.
If he didn't take the Gu family's stuff, it would just end up with the bandits or the protagonist's crew.
Xie Licheng didn't like either side, so he sure as hell wasn't about to leave anything for them.
Besides, packing things up didn't take much effort, so he was more than happy to make the trip.
Then, to Xie Licheng's mild surprise, when he got to Gu Zhangyuan's courtyard, someone was already prying open the stone door to the secret chamber.
Four people were working on it: one woman and three men.
The woman looked a bit familiar—she seemed to be one of the Gu family's concubines.
Turns out, this concubine had actually been saved by Xie Licheng before, though he didn't remember it himself.
When he'd rescued Yuan Qiao, he'd saved a bunch of people in the inner garden.
Those people were all women and young lads, and this concubine had been in the crowd back then.
Xie Licheng didn't remember her, but she sure remembered him.
So when they were halfway through prying the door and Xie Licheng suddenly showed up, the concubine nearly scared herself to death.
She quickly said to the three men beside her, "Stop! Someone's coming! Someone's coming!"
A young man turned around at the sound. He wasn't from the Gu family, nor was he a bandit or a cop, so he naturally didn't know Xie Licheng or how scary he could be.
Seeing how scared the concubine was, he figured those guys had come back.
But when he saw it was just one guy, the young man casually picked up a knife from the ground.
He pointed it at Xie Licheng and barked, "Get the hell out of here, or I'll gut you."
Xie Licheng didn't budge at the threat; instead, he walked right toward them.
Seeing that, the young man immediately waved his buddies over to take Xie Licheng out first.
The concubine saw this and quickly blurted out, "Don't, don't, for God's sake, don't fight him. You can't beat him. Let's just go—forget about the stuff here."
Another man, a bit older, kicked the concubine aside at her words.
They didn't know this concubine at all. They'd only ended up together because she wanted to flee the city and begged them to take her along.
These three men weren't good guys, so they obviously didn't want to take her along for free. In the end, to get them to bring her, the concubine spilled the beans about the Eldest Young Master of the Gu family's secret chamber.
The older man said, "Useless woman, what's there to be scared of from some brat?!"
The concubine clutched her chest where she'd been kicked and tried to warn them again, but saw they'd already charged forward.
She quickly covered her eyes, and then heard two screams ring out.
Scared out of her wits, she immediately dropped to her knees facing the door.
She kowtowed and begged, "Young master, Master Xie, please spare me. I don't want the stuff here anymore. I don't want any of it."
Xie Licheng didn't know her, and seeing she was smart enough to back off, he said, "Get out of here."
The concubine felt like she'd just been given a pardon. She scrambled and crawled out from under his feet.
But when she caught sight of the corpses on the ground, she nearly passed out from shock.
But driven by survival instinct, she still managed to crawl her way out of Gu Zhangyuan's room.
Once the room was empty, Xie Licheng used one of the dead men's clothes to wipe the blood off his miao dao, then headed for the stone door of the secret chamber.
He knew how to open the secret chamber, so it didn't take much effort at all.
As the stone door slowly slid open, Xie Licheng grabbed a flashlight and unhurriedly made his way down the stairs.
The chamber below wasn't big, but it was stuffed with a ton of stuff.
He was curious how that woman had known about this place.
She clearly wasn't from Gu Zhangyuan's courtyard, so there was no reason she should've known about it.
As Xie Licheng mulled this over, he started quickly shoving items into his portable world.
He started with the books and paintings, which were carefully boxed up—clearly works by famous masters.
Too bad stuff like this wasn't worth much in times of chaos.
But since Gu Zhangyuan liked this kind of stuff, and his portable world had plenty of space, he decided to take what he could.
Then, the entire contents of the chamber got swept into Xie Licheng's portable world in one go.
After packing it all up, Xie Licheng came out of the secret chamber.
He was about to leave when he noticed there was still a bunch of stuff in Gu Zhangyuan's private quarters.
His bed, dressing table, and stuff like that were still there.
These items were a pain to move, and even if they were made of precious wood, nobody would bother hauling them off.
Xie Licheng walked over to the bed and grabbed the bed, nightstands, dressing table, table, chairs—everything else too.
