    Chapter Index

Shen Xingsui felt happy before leaving for the album production.

Wang Meina truly was a touching manager, knowing that he and Fu Jinxe had few chances to meet, she arranged for the two to reunite at a small charity gala.

The event was bustling, a sea of people coming and going.

When Shen Xingsui prepared to attend, he selected several suits from renowned brands and consulted his assistant, "Which one do you think suits me best?"

His assistant, named Gu Panpan, was a young woman.

Gu Panpan had experience, but she also had her little secret. She shipped the relationship between Shen Xingsui and Fu Jinxe, yet she maintained a professional demeanor, which sometimes was tough for her.

"Hmm... I think," Gu Panpan, sitting on the sofa, pondered, "the white one looks great on you."

Shen Xingsui held up the white suit, evaluating, "Really? Won't it be too plain?"

Gu Panpan blurted out, "But isn’t Mr. Fu’s suit usually black? White would complement him, and your natural aura is so clean. The white suit makes you look youthful and fresh. It's truly fitting!"

Mention of Fu Jinxe made Shen Xingsui blush slightly. He shot her a warning glance, cautioning, "Mind your words..."

    Gu Panpan grinned, "Got it!"

Both suits were recommended by stylists. Either choice would look good since they were tailor-made.

Upon arriving at the charity event, Shen Xingsui was greeted by many peers from the entertainment industry. Frontline staff guided him, briefing him about the event's schedule and plans.

    The main hall lay ahead.

In the hall, chairs were neatly arranged. Though they appeared uniform, every celebrity's seat was pre-determined. Being closer to the front or the center signaled higher status. Though unspoken, it was an industry's unspoken rule.

A staff member led Shen Xingsui to the third row, smiling, "Please, sit here."

Shen Xingsui graciously responded, "Thank you."

Being in the third row was already a privileged position. Given his past record, he would have been lucky to even get a seat in the back.

Many young actors of his age were seated there too. He noticed Xu Qinke not far off and waved, "Hey Xu."

Xu Qinke approached, remarking, "You're here too."

"Yes," Shen Xingsui smiled, "I received an invitation."

He couldn't very well say he came just to see Fu Jinxiao, so he had to offer a subtle reason.

Sitting beside him, Xu Qinke whispered, "Many treat this banquet as a networking event, or as a chance to enhance their profiles. Some hope to later label themselves as 'charity ambassadors' on their online bios – it sounds impressive, even if it means little."

Shen Xingsui felt that was a piercing observation.

People in the industry were always keen on accumulating titles. The better their packaging, the brighter they shone.

"Some big shots genuinely contribute to charity and don't fret over the expenses," Xu Qinke, ever the gossip, leaned in, "But do you know why some attend these events?"

An innocent Shen Xingsui asked, "Why?"

With a mysterious smirk, Xu Qinke replied, "To climb social ladders and seek bigger opportunities."

    "..."

As they chatted, a commotion began near the entrance.

Everyone's arrival was usually accompanied by cameras, but this was unusually raucous. As a tall figure with long legs stepped into the light, the high-end black suit he wore shimmered brilliantly under the flash. Fu Jinxiao's handsome face bore a smile as he chatted with a renowned actress by his side.

The moment he entered, all conversations paused, and every eye was on him.

Some people naturally commanded attention. He gracefully greeted those who stood to welcome him, a casual smile on his face, surrounded by lively chatter.

"That's the treatment a top-tier celebrity gets," Xu Qinke remarked.

Shen Xingsui was watching too. While others looked on with admiration, he felt a pang of longing. Days without meeting, apart from occasional texts and calls, they were both engrossed in their schedules. The few moments of respite were filled with longing.

As he pondered, the group approached.

Both Xu Qinke and Shen Xingsui stood up. By comparison to the bustling crowd, they felt quite inconspicuous. Still, protocol demanded respect. Xu Qinke greeted them with a bow, "Good evening, Mr. Fu, Miss Yao."

Fu Jinxiao shook his hand, embracing him briefly in a friendly gesture, "It's been a while. I've heard your recent track, quite impressive."

"Thank you, Mr. Fu," Xu Qinke replied, pleasantly surprised.

Many young attendees had interacted with Fu Jinxiao due to shared appearances on shows. Getting a few moments of his time was quite the fortune.

Fu Jinxiao nodded at him, finally turning his gaze to Shen Xingsui. His deep, intense eyes seemed even more luminous under the hall lights. Flashing a charming, slightly mischievous smile, he said, "Long time no see."

He had only said "long time no see" to him.

Not even to Xu Qinke, who had been away for the same length of time.

Days apart from others never seem too long, but time stretches endlessly when separated from a loved one.

Fu Jinxiao took a step forward, generously spreading his arms, "It's been a while, Teacher Shen. May I embrace you?"

As Fu Jinxiao's words lingered in the air, Shen Xingsui's heart raced, a spontaneous smile lighting up his eyes. He plunged into Fu Jinxiao's embrace, a stark contrast to the brief hug he had with Xu Qinke. Their embrace was genuine and solid, the intensity known only to them.

Countless eyes watched them, spotlighted by camera lenses.

They put in the effort to embrace, pausing their greetings with others, just for that fleeting moment of closeness.

Fu Jinxiao's head dipped slightly, whispering softly by Shen Xingsui's ear, his voice warm and gentle, like a feather caressing one's soul, "I've missed you."

    Shen Xingsui stiffened momentarily.

Their voices were too soft; those around them couldn't hear. Given their proximity and their lowered faces, the cameras couldn't catch the moment either.

Yet, despite such an environment, Fu Jinxiao still openly expressed his affection. He has always been candid, never unnecessarily reserved.

Shen Xingsui had no doubt, had they not agreed to keep things private, Fu Jinxiao would be even more forthright. Still, such a minor episode made him joyous, as if submerged in sweetness.

After a brief embrace, Fu Jinxiao let go, "I'll head over first."

    Shen Xingsui nodded in agreement.

Standing next to Fu Jinxiao, the renowned actress Yao Yuchen smiled at Shen Xingsui, "Xingsui, I often hear your Teacher Fu speak highly of you. Would you consider writing a song for my next film?"

Never having received such an offer, Shen Xingsui quickly responded, "Certainly, it would be my honor."

Yao Yuchen's lips curled, "So charming."

Observing the scene, some lesser-known artists nearby couldn't help but feel envious. This was the benefit of being connected to influential circles. Resources flowed like water, especially with someone like Fu Jinxiao, well-connected and highly respected in the industry. It's no wonder many aspire to be in his favor.

    The charity gala began.

The industry giants took the stage first to sign autographs.

Those of lesser fame followed, taking their turns. After signing, the organizers had prepared a banquet. The seating arrangement was flexible, with a couple of empty spots remaining at the main table.

Xu Qinke whispered to Shen Xingsui, "Go on, there's a seat next to Teacher Fu."

Shen Xingsui hesitated, "Too many people around."

At times, he could be quite timid.

But as he finished his sentence, a female artist in a low-cut dress approached, slightly embarrassed, "Excuse me, it seems the other tables are full. May I sit here?"

The vacant seat was right beside Fu Jinxiao.

Those at the main table looked taken aback, but being industry leaders, they generally wouldn't fuss over such trivialities.

Fu Jinxiao nonchalantly waved, "Please, have a seat."

The curly-haired actress gave a somewhat bashful smile. Indeed, she was quite the beauty with fair skin and striking features. To Shen Xingsui's eyes, the scene was a tad unsettling.

Xu Qinke remarked, "See? Someone beat you to the punch."

Shen Xingsui pouted and aimlessly swirled his wine, visibly displeased.

Yet, before his sulking could last long, Fu Jinxiao stood up once more. The charity gala had a segment for guest interviews. He barely paused before leaving for his interview, depriving the actress of any chance to curry favor. Although he wasn’t scheduled to be interviewed first, he made the move without hesitation.

Xu Qinke, having observed the entire scene, said sentimentally to Shen Xingsui, "You might be timid, but you sure have a knack for choosing the right man."

Shen Xingsui replied sarcastically, "Thanks for that."

The gala organizers had prepared a slew of interview questions. While some pertained to the charitable cause, others probed into personal matters which the audience was always keen on.

Spotlights converged, and microphones from various media outlets were set up.

One organizer inquired, "We're aware of your longstanding commitment to charity, especially towards impoverished and disabled children. Does this mean you have a fondness for children? When you marry, would you prefer a boy or a girl?"

Fu Jinxiao responded, "I've always loved children, regardless of gender."

    A very official answer.

Pushing their luck, the organizer asked, "Have you given thought to when you'd like to have children, or perhaps, the timing of your marriage?"

Fu Jinxiao raised an eyebrow, seemingly contemplating for a moment before answering, "I haven't considered having children just yet."

Most would have stopped their response there.

However, today, a hint of amusement glinted in the eyes of the man under the spotlight. He continued, "But I have given thought to when I might marry."

The host's eyes widened in surprise.

The reporters and media personnel below shared the same astonishment. No one had expected this revelation, and the excitement was palpable.

The slightly flustered host asked, "So, are you considering marriage soon?"

Fu Jinxiao replied calmly, "Why not? Given my age, it seems an appropriate time to contemplate it."

    That being said,

Owing to Fu Jinxiao's unwavering peak career years and the fact that the celebrated actor had never been linked to any scandals, no one had anticipated such a revelation. Some even speculated that he was a staunch bachelor and wasn't interested in romantic affairs. And yet, today, he openly discussed his thoughts on marriage.

The staff member wanted to probe further, but the interview time had come to an end.

When this segment was broadcasted across various platforms, it was as if a heavy bomb had been dropped on a serene lake:

    "Is this for real?"

    "Is he really contemplating marriage?"

"Just considering, doesn't mean there's someone in the picture yet."

"Oh my god, I can't handle this..."

"Come on, Fu is nearly 30. What's wrong with him wanting to settle down?"

"Even idols deserve to marry and have kids."

These are the simpler fans' reactions. However, the veteran fans sense something amiss. Usually, when an idol speaks about wanting a relationship or considering marriage in public, there's usually something brewing. They're probably setting the stage for their fans.

There's a high chance that he has already found 'the one'.

    So...

    Who could it be?

    ...

Shen Xingsui, upon leaving the banquet, noticed this trending topic.

Especially when he saw the word 'marriage,' his heart melted. Before this, he had no desire for marriage or romance. Now, however, he felt a newfound urge to be better, to be stronger, hoping that someday he could stand beside him, openly, and perhaps... marry him.

    A wedding showered with blessings.

    It's his deepest desire.

A chauffeured car awaited in the parking lot, sent by Wang Meican. Upon entering, Shen Xingsui saw Fu Jinxiao, slightly drunk, resting in the backseat. Perhaps due to the dim interior lights, the man appeared weary after letting his guard down.

Hearing the movement, Fu glanced at Shen.

Shen approached him, unbothered by the scent of alcohol, asking, "Feeling unwell?"

    "A bit."

Fu Jinxiao pulled Shen closer, burying his face in the crook of Shen's neck and inhaling his fresh scent, murmuring, "You were quite close to Xu Qinke tonight."

    Shen Xingsui: ?

"He's taken," Fu added ambiguously, "and they're deeply in love."

Suppressing a chuckle, Shen replied, "I know."

How could he be this adorable? Totally undetectable earlier at the event. But after a few drinks, was he showing signs of jealousy?

Shen whispered, "We were just making small talk. Nothing more."

Fu huffed, "You didn't even sit next to me during dinner."

"There were so many people, I was shy."

Being in love with Fu seemed like discovering a completely new side of him. Though it contrasted his previous persona, Shen felt an even deeper affection.

Resting his head on Shen's shoulder, Fu's deep, magnetic voice playfully whined, "I'm still not happy about it."

Shen Xingsui paused, asking, "What should we do then?"

A mischievous smirk pulled at the corners of Fu Jinxiao's lips. With a devilish glint in his eyes, he leaned in, pressing a kiss onto Shen Xingsui's lips. It felt as though he was making up for every moment they were apart. The kiss was lingering, carrying a possessive dominance, their breaths mingling as if they were the only two beings in that moment.

Shen Xingsui's eyes began to redden.

Darkness swirled in Fu Jinxiao's eyes as his rough fingers gently brushed against Shen's tear-laden lashes. His voice, raspy and low, murmured, "Why the tears?"

Shen Xingsui replied pitifully, "I can't breathe."

Fu Jinxiao paused before chuckling softly.

Another day where he was charmed by his partner's adorable antics. The more he knew him, the deeper his affection grew.

After taking a moment, Shen Xingsui shared his schedule with Fu Jinxiao. Upon mentioning his collaboration with Teacher Hu Kaiyue, Fu's brow furrowed slightly, advising, "Although he's musically talented, he's not very reputable in his private life. Interact with him strictly for work purposes."

    Shen Xingsui nodded, "I understand."

"Stay safe when you're away," Fu Jinxiao, producing a silver earring from somewhere, put it on Shen Xingsui's ear, kissing the slightly reddened lobe with gentle tenderness. However, his voice held an authoritative tone, "Do not remove it while you're out."

Shen Xingsui was slightly puzzled but nodded in agreement.

Fu Jinxiao inquired, "How long will you be away?"

"Probably one or two months," Shen Xingsui estimated the album's production time, "That's what I'm guessing. I'm not the only one involved. Zhang Chi is also part of it. He studied at the music academy and is quite talented."

Fu Jinxiao's slender finger tapped the chair's backrest, a gesture he often used when pondering. After a moment, he said, "In about half a month, I'll be shooting a commercial near Phoenix Mountain. Don't stay with them. I'll rent an apartment for you there; you'll stay there alone."

Shen Xingsui murmured, "Isn't that a bit inconvenient? They've probably arranged a hotel for me."

"I don't trust the hotels they've chosen." Fu Jinxiao glanced at him, his expression stern, "I'll also assign two assistants to accompany you. Call me if there's any issue."

Initially, Shen Xingsui felt the arrangements were a tad excessive, but looking into Fu Jinxiao's eyes, he couldn't bring himself to object. The oversight felt strict, but it was clear it was out of concern. Shen Xingsui didn't doubt that if he declined, the recording would likely be canceled.

Nevertheless, being cherished felt wonderful, so he didn't oppose. After agreeing to Fu Jinxiao's requests, he went home and began packing his bags, preparing for his work at Phoenix Mountain.

    ...

    "Xingsui!"

The temperature at Phoenix Mountain began to rise in late spring and early summer.

Shen Xingsui had been there for almost ten days, and everything was progressing smoothly. Hu Kaiyue was indeed a talented music producer. With his guidance, Shen Xingsui's progress was rapid. Zhang Chi was proficient in many instruments and was quite imaginative. After some initial adjustments, their collaboration was harmonious.

Setting down the musical scores, Shen Xingsui asked, "What is it?"

"The weather's great today. Why don't we head down the mountain and explore?" Suggested Zhang Chi, dressed in summer attire, "We've been here for days and haven't really explored Phoenix Mountain's streets. You've been stuck with your lyrics recently, right? I heard there's a lively town below Phoenix Mountain. Maybe it could inspire us. Let's check it out."

As Zhang Chi pointed out, Shen Xingsui's creative journey wasn't always smooth sailing.

For some unknown reason, he'd been feeling restless these past couple of days. His recent compositions seemed to have hit a snag, lacking direction. Although Teacher Hu wasn't rushing him, Shen Xingsui felt a sense of urgency. So, the idea of a change of scenery seemed tempting.

Shen Xingsui hesitated, "Did Teacher Hu agree?"

"Don't worry!" Zhang Chi patted his chest, "I talked to him about your situation, and he agreed."

Shen Xingsui packed up the music sheets into his bag, "Alright then."

Even if wandering around might not spark inspiration, there's no loss if it happens to do so. Besides, he's at a loss, so it's worth trying this way.

The history and scenery of the town at the foot of the mountain are quite beautiful.

Hu Kaiyue indeed has a good taste for choosing this mountain for his summer retreat. The environment is pristine with clear skies and waters. The town by the sea has a captivating view. The sea breeze is invigorating, as if it's sweeping away any troubles.

Shen Xingsui sighed, "It truly is beautiful here."

He took numerous photos while wandering around.

Zhang Chi, chattering about the surroundings, noticed Shen Xingsui texting on his phone and curiously asked, "Xingsui, what are you doing?"

Shen Xingsui replied with a smile, "I'm sending photos to a friend."

Zhang Chi had an inkling that this 'friend' was no ordinary one.

As they passed a beachside barbecue stall, both of them felt hungry. Shen Xingsui pocketed his phone and they bought a good amount of food, including a bowl of flat noodles, reminiscent of their student days.

While eating, Shen Xingsui offered Zhang Chi some gluten from his bowl, saying, "Here you go."

    Zhang Chi looked surprised.

Shen Xingsui then grabbed the chili container and started mixing it.

Zhang Chi chuckled, "You still remember, huh?"

In the past, when they ordered flat noodles together, Zhang Chi always loved the gluten, while Shen Xingsui preferred the noodles. So, Shen Xingsui would always pass the gluten to Zhang Chi. They even had a specific vinegar-to-chili ratio for their sauce, cheekily named 'Yin Yang Poison Water.'

Shen Xingsui nodded, "It's been a long time since I had it too."

Taking a bite, Zhang Chi said, "I missed this taste while abroad."

Seeing his friend's nostalgic expression, Shen Xingsui smiled and stayed silent.

In the afternoon, the beachside stalls exuded tranquility. The sunlight lazily filtered down, evoking warmth and serenity. Zhang Chi stretched and commented, "After all these years, you still don't fancy gluten? I rarely see you eat it."

Sipping from an orange juice bottle, Shen Xingsui replied softly, "I've had it sometimes."

Zhang Chi looked at him inquisitively.

"Back in high school," Shen Xingsui leaned back in his chair, watching the distant waves, "I ate it whenever it was available."

For Shen Xingsui, gluten was like any other side dish. He would eat it if available and give it to Zhang Chi if he felt like it. No deep meaning attached.

However, Zhang Chi interpreted it differently.

During high school, Zhang Chi distanced himself from Shen Xingsui. Even during the critical period of college entrance exams, he, like other students, ostracized Shen. Later, he heard that Shen's academic performance significantly deteriorated in high school. Originally poised to attend a music academy, Shen's grades confined him to a much lesser institution.

As such, Zhang Chi always felt that Shen Xingsui had every reason to resent him. But he never showed it. He seemed to regard many things, including past grievances, with a detachment, as if they mattered little.

The only one who couldn't let go of the past was Zhang Chi himself.

    Is it guilt or love?

He couldn't tell, but he desperately wanted to make amends to Shen Xingsui. He yearned to treat him well, as if he owed Shen a lifetime of compensation.

Zhang Chi said softly, "Xingsui, actually I..."

Just then, Shen Xingsui's phone rang. He glanced at the caller ID and a smile instantly lit up his face. The whole aura around him shifted. He told Zhang Chi, "I need to take this call. Feel free to wander around, and we can meet back here later."

Zhang Chi, taken aback, said, "Wait, where are you going?"

But Shen Xingsui was already walking away, phone in hand.

Left behind, Zhang Chi felt a mix of frustration and annoyance. He had been the one to invite Shen out, and now he was left alone. Without Shen Xingsui by his side, what was there to enjoy?

Although somewhat annoyed, Zhang Chi began to stroll along the beach, his thoughts consumed by Shen Xingsui. He became lost in thought.

    "Hey!"

A voice called out from behind.

Startled, Zhang Chi turned around to see an unexpected face: An Ran. He frowned, "What are you doing here?"

Taking off his sunglasses, An Ran replied with feigned surprise, "I'm on vacation. Aren't you here with a group working on an album?"

Annoyed, Zhang Chi retorted, "What's it to you?"

Raising an eyebrow, An Ran said, "Come on, Zhang Chi, we're old classmates. Just because we haven't seen each other in a while doesn't mean we should forget our bond."

As Zhang Chi continued down the path, he replied dismissively, "There's nothing for us to talk about."

"How do you know unless you chat?" An Ran responded leisurely. "Perhaps I could help you out."

Zhang Chi paused, looking at An Ran with suspicion. "How can you help?"

An Ran smirked, "Don't you like Shen Xingsui? Want to be with him? I have a way to help you win him over. And trust me, it'll work."

Hesitating, Zhang Chi admitted, "He doesn't seem to have feelings for me right now. He seems to be interested in someone else."

"He's not married, right?" An Ran stated with flawed logic. "Anything short of marriage doesn't count. Relationships end all the time. Plus, you're quite the catch."

Zhang Chi pondered An Ran's words, "So, what's your plan?"

An Ran whispered, "Although I'm not particularly close to Shen Xingsui, I know he's quite conservative. You two have many opportunities to be alone right now. This might be your last chance."

Gradually, Zhang Chi seemed to comprehend what An Ran was implying.

The very thought was utterly terrifying to him. Such a notion had never crossed his mind before, and yet An Ran spoke of it with such casual indifference!

"No!" Zhang Chi instinctively protested. "This isn't right..."

An Ran knew Zhang Chi all too well. He may be timid, but An Ran also recognized Zhang Chi's selfish streak. Sometimes, he'd go to great lengths for his own ends. So, whether it was right or not, it was worth a shot.

An Ran then handed Zhang Chi a small packet, reminiscent of candy. "Shen Xing Sui used to like you. The change, isn't it all because of some misunderstanding between you two? If you make it up to him properly afterward, he surely won't remain mad. But if you miss these opportunities, you might never get another chance to be close to him."

As damnably intriguing and disgusting as ever, you bitch.

    Note
