Chapter 9
by"Chapter 9: Wealth Brings Confidence"
The shop assistants and customers all turned their eyes towards the little one.
They all looked at her without ridicule.
Because Shen Ningning was wearing tattered clothes, and her shoes even had a hole in them!
Despite her fair, delicate face and charming looks.
But used to seeing refugees, everyone mistook her for a beggar.
The shopkeeper frowned, "Where did this little urchin come from? Leave now, or I'll have you taken to the authorities!"
Shen Ningning, huffing with indignation, took out a small bag of silver coins she had prepared earlier and, standing on tiptoes, tossed it onto the counter.
"I said, I want to buy clothes!"
The shopkeeper, skeptical at first, opened the bag and, seeing the silver coins, immediately switched to a broad smile.
"So the young miss really intends to buy clothes. My apologies for my earlier misunderstanding."
He called an assistant to take down the clothes and pack them for Shen Ningning.
Besides clothes for herself, Shen Ningning also bought two items for her grandmother, as well as shoes for both of them.
The total came to one hundred and twenty taels.
The package of clothes was heavy, but she managed to carry it out of the cloth shop. Around the corner, where no one was watching, she quickly stashed the clothes into her mystical haven!
Afterwards, the little one headed straight for the stables.
In these times of disaster, many families were selling their horses to raise money.
Shen Ningning paced around the stable.
The person in charge approached, smiling insincerely, "Little girl, have you lost your parents?"
Shen Ningning looked up with her big, watery eyes, "I want to buy a horse-drawn carriage!"
Because she had realized the importance of money.
Although she had a mystical realm, it couldn't produce silver.
But she could exchange items for silver.
Buying a carriage would allow her to take her grandmother around the city.
Selling medicinal herbs would be easier, without the need for constant walking, making it less tiring!
The stable master was astonished.
It was his first time encountering such a small person with such big ambitions.
He chuckled, "A carriage costs two hundred taels of silver. Think it over, do you have that much?"
Shen Ningning nodded, "I do. Choose a strong horse for me, bring the carriage to the entrance, and I'll give you the silver."
Skeptical, the stable master furrowed his brows but proceeded as requested.
Once the carriage was ready, the little girl handed over the prepared bag of silver.
She had already taken out the remaining eighty taels.
Since Shen Ningning couldn't drive the carriage herself, she also rented a coachman from the stable.
The round trip would cost her five taels.
Finally, Shen Ningning, seated in the carriage, returned to the Hui Chun Tang herbal shop she had visited earlier.
"Shopkeeper grandpa~" She leaned on the carriage window, smilingly looking at the people inside the shop, "Call a doctor to accompany me on a trip!"
The shopkeeper hurried out, his eyes widening at the sight of the high-stepping horse and the little girl's sparkling eyes, even brighter than before.
Having money indeed brings confidence! And she was quite the big spender.
"Little girl, if you don't mind, I'll accompany you. The doctors of Hui Chun Tang are all out on calls, and I, the shopkeeper, am also a trained doctor," the shopkeeper offered.
He finally saw an opportunity to figure out the background of this little girl!
Shen Ningning tilted her head, "How much should I pay you for the consultation then?"
Recalling how he had undercharged her for the Purple Lingzhi earlier, the shopkeeper smiled modestly, "Not much, just ten taels for the round trip, excluding the cost of medicines. Does that sound reasonable to you?"
Shen Ningning pondered for a moment and nodded, "Get in the carriage!"
She had sixty-five taels left.
She had thought there wouldn't be much left.
So, before leaving the capital, Shen Ningning returned to the cloth shop and bought herself a set of clothes.
Spending thirty taels.
After some thought, she also bought some pots and pans, costing her fifteen taels.
In the end, she was left with only twenty taels, but she felt completely satisfied!
On the carriage, learning of Shen Ningning's extravagant purchases.
The herbal shopkeeper chuckled, "Little girl, why didn't you buy water and food? With that much money, you could live comfortably for a while!"
Shen Ningning replied without hesitation, "No need for that!"
The shopkeeper wanted to ask more, but the clever little one closed her eyes, appearing ready to sleep.
He thought it best not to pry further.
As they entered the mountainous road, the sun was setting, casting its lingering glow.
Shen Ningning reopened her eyes and started directing the coachman.
Her newly purchased carriage was spacious and sturdy, and to reach Wolf Mountain, they had to pass through Xiangyun Village!
As the carriage rushed past the village entrance, Uncle Qin and a group of villagers loosening soil in the fields looked on with envy.
"Who's this wealthy family visiting our village now?"
"Judging by the direction, they don’t seem to be entering our village."
"Speaking of wealth, the only time I've seen someone in a carriage was old Qin's brother-in-law. Right, old Qin?"
Uncle Qin’s face turned ashen. He wiped his sweat with a rough towel, excused himself for a rest, and left with his hoe.
The carriage stopped at the foot of Wolf Mountain.
"Awoo~" Shen Ningning heard a familiar call and her face lit up with joy.
The wolves were indeed waiting for her.
Both the coachman and the shopkeeper turned pale with fear.
"Wolves? This couldn't be the infamous Wolf Mountain known for its wild wolves, could it?"
Shen Ningning smiled sweetly, "Don't be afraid, they won't harm people."
Saying so, she jumped off the carriage.
The coachman had already made an excuse to leave and ran off.
The innkeeper's legs went weak.
As soon as she got off the carriage, Shen Ningning spotted a pale, cold figure standing in the woods watching her.
"Brother!" Shen Ningning, with her small feet, ran towards him.
Mo Lingwei, barely sustaining himself due to illness, had a blurry gaze but still exuded a strong presence.
After waking up, he heard from Grandma Qin that Shen Ningning had gone to the city alone and thought she was being reckless.
She had never left these mountains before. With the current situation in the city, wouldn't she be devoured by those heartless refugees?
Fortunately, Mo Lingwei breathed a sigh of relief when Shen Ningning returned.
Mo Lingwei stared at the herbalist behind her: "Who is he?"
"He's the doctor I've brought to treat you and Grandma. Let's head to the mountains, Master Shopkeeper!"
Shen Ningning said with a smile, but the herbalist didn't dare to move a step.
He looked at the wolves pacing around, circling back and forth, so frightened he wanted to scream but couldn't make a sound.
Mo Lingwei's gaze was more terrifying than the wolves, sharp like a blade.
He looked at the shopkeeper for a moment and said coldly: "If he's going into the mountains, he must be blindfolded."
Shen Ningning was puzzled.
But Mo Lingwei insisted on this, even tearing off a piece of cloth and throwing it to the shopkeeper.
"Wear this, or you won't be able to go back today," he warned coldly.
Terrified, the shopkeeper hurriedly complied: "I'll wear it, I'll wear it! Just don't let the wolves, don't don't eat me."
If he had known, he would have never taken this trip!
He had wanted to see what kind of family could grow Purple Lingzhi.
But who would have thought it would be a pack of wolves!
Mo Lingwei and Shen Ningning walked ahead, with the Black Wolf King closely following her, nuzzling her hand with its head and licking her affectionately.
The little one laughed happily.
"Shen Ningning, you have the backing of these mountains, spring water, and food. Don't let strangers learn about your location," Mo Lingwei whispered sternly.
He knew the dangers of human nature, and how possessing such resources could be perilous for a child of merely four years.
If someone with ill intentions found their way here, even the pack of wolves might not be able to protect her.
Thinking this.
Mo Lingwei suddenly paused.
Strange, why was he becoming increasingly concerned about her these days?
Their figures gradually disappeared into the depths of the forest.
Uncle Qin, who had been hiding in the distance, stepped out, his eyes filled with surprise.
He rushed home and told Aunt Qin everything he saw.
Aunt Qin sneered: "I wondered why that orphan suddenly dared to defy me; she had a pack of wolves backing her! But what of it? They're just beasts. I'll deal with her and the wolves together!"
Uncle Qin hesitated: "But there's a strange young man with her..."
"Probably a desperate refugee, nothing to worry about! This time, we must show that wretched girl Shen Ningning who's boss!" Aunt Qin's smile was malicious, full of confidence.
"Congratulations to all the students who have finished their college entrance exams, finally able to enjoy your wonderful holiday!"
