Chapter 40: The Demon God Mingling

I nodded, thinking about the villains in various films and TV series. The title of Demon God sounded powerful.

"That battle was grueling. Even now, it seems too difficult to recall. Li Fan even resorted to using his charm. Anyway, it wasn't an easy victory!"

I didn't expect Soul Extinguisher to be such a chatterbox. Now that he had started, he wanted to continue, but Li Fan silenced him with a mere glance.

He obediently shut up and, with a flash, transformed back into a sword, which Li Fan sheathed.

Rushing to Li Fan's side, I tried to hold his hand but then thought better of it, grabbing his sleeve instead.

Li Fan's eyelashes fluttered as he turned to grasp my hand.

"Li Fan, I want to ask you something." I swayed our clasped hands. "But let's agree beforehand that if I accidentally step on one of your triggers, I'll immediately stop, and you can't get angry at me, okay?"

"Do I seem that bad-tempered to you? Full of triggers? Do I scare you?" Li Fan's eyes shimmered as he turned to face me.

I ignored his gaze and pulled out my yellow notebook, where the list of triggers had already been updated to four.

I always carry my notebook with me, and after carefully checking the notes on potential pitfalls, I asked Li Fan, "What's your relationship with the Demon God? Does she have feelings for you? Otherwise, how could your seduction work?"

My speculation was grounded. If the Demon God had no connection with Li Fan and was solely focused on her endeavors, then his seductive tactics should have been ineffective.

However, since Li Fan's attempt succeeded, it indicated that their relationship was not straightforward.

At least one of them had feelings for the other.

My question seemed to render Li Fan speechless; he took an eternity to respond, almost making me give up on waiting for an answer. Finally, he spoke.

"He does have some interest in me."

"But the... relationship has not yet developed."

    Me: ???

Well, he misunderstood. That wasn't the kind of relationship I meant, and I sensed a hint of a dead end.

I decided to bypass this confusion and seize the moment, asking, "So, is the Demon God completely gone?"

"No." Li Fan responded much quicker to this question. "She was killed, but not entirely. After all, she's a deity now, and I'm just a little fox. Don't have too high expectations of me."

Leaving the root untouched when weeding is never a good practice!

"I want to know the name of that demonic god. If I ever see her, I'll steer clear," I shared my thoughts candidly.

Li Fan gently squeezed my hand and said, "Her name is Mingling. You've already met her, so there's no need to avoid her because you can't escape her."

I froze for two seconds before bursting with frustration.

    What's going on here...

Isn't Mingling the woman who frequently appears in my dreams?

Why does everything seem to be converging towards me? Am I some kind of irresistible delicacy?

With an eager look in my eyes, I stared at Li Fan, hoping he would tell me in the next second that it was all just a joke.

But he didn't. Worried that I wouldn't believe him, he even nodded affirmatively.

"Truly, I'm not lying to you. My guess is that a fragment of Mingling's soul resides within you, seeking to reincarnate through your body. That's why I was so astonished when you mentioned her before."

"However, there's no need to be overly terrified. No matter how powerful the Demon God was, it's now just a vestige of a soul. As long as your will is strong, you'll be safe."

"Why did she come to me then?" I voiced my despair.

"Perhaps she finds a special connection with you," Li Fan paused, crouching down in front of me. "Climb on, the mountain path ahead is treacherous. I'll carry you down."

I nodded and, without hesitation, laid on his back. His sturdy arms then lifted me up.

"Li Fan," I whispered into his ear, "I can't help but feel that we resemble Piggy carrying his bride with the way we are right now."

"Is it that you think I resemble Zhu Bajie, or do you fancy yourself as my spouse?" Li Fan's voice echoed.

I remained silent. This was a rustic pickup line; its actual intention was to compare myself to his wife.

Yet, when the moment came, the words seemed to stick in my throat. Eventually, I let out a long sigh before posing my question to him.

"Li Fan, would you ever come for me in the future, to kill me in order to utterly slay the Demon God?"

My words made Li Fan's body tense, and after a few seconds, I could clearly sense his grip tightening, as if he were holding me captive to him.

Then, his muffled voice echoed from beneath me, "No."

    ...

By the time we reached the village from the mountains, it was almost dinner time.

I called Lin Yu over and recounted the day's events to her, naturally, leaving out certain details.

After listening, Lin Yu exclaimed in surprise and immediately went to report to the village chief.

That evening, we had a meal in the village. The chief specially slaughtered three chickens to express his gratitude. There were only four of us at the table, with Yang Ling'er absent.

This curiosity was quickly overshadowed by the impending food; everything else could wait when dinner was served.

Calculating in my mind, there were three chickens on the table, so I hoped to at least get one leg for myself.

However, reality proved different as all six legs ended up in Li Fan's bowl.

"Great effort, Lady Fox Spirit, on this trip. Our humble village truly owes you. We don't have much to offer, but please enjoy your meal," the village chief said with a smile to Li Fan.

Li Fan was never pretentious. If there was a chicken leg, he would genuinely savor it. Using chopsticks, he skillfully picked the meat off the bone and placed it in a small bowl, maintaining cleanliness and hygiene.

Hmm, a refined little fox indeed, eating with such elegance.

Lin Yu wasn't bothered by the chicken leg issue. She was too busy counting her earnings, indicating that she had made quite a profit from this journey.

"Bai Ci, I just transferred eight hundred to you. If you don't want it, feel free to return it. No need to be embarrassed," Lin Yu said cheerfully to me.

"I'll keep it," I replied, nibbling on a chicken neck. "It's the hard-earned wage for my little fox. It can buy him more chicken legs."

Upon hearing this, Li Fan glanced up at me, then deliberately placed the small bowl of chicken leg meat in front of me, tapping it lightly to draw attention.

Seeing this, the village chief coughed softly and retreated to the kitchen. Lin Yu looked at me with a teasing expression, letting out an 'oh'.

    I was instantly struck dumb.

Damn it, with Li Fan's casual demeanor, it made me seem overly dramatic!

Recalling my slightly petty remark earlier, I felt embarrassed enough to wish I could crawl under the table.

We spent the night in the village. Lately, Li Fan had been acting strangely, insisting on sleeping outdoors and even sharing a bed with me.

I was far from a well-behaved sleeper; upon waking, I'd often find my legs draped over his waist, having unintentionally stolen all the covers.

After a few such occurrences, I couldn't help but wonder if he had improper intentions towards me. But how could a proper young lady bring up such a matter?

So, I kept quiet, waiting for him to take the initiative!

The next day, Lin Yu and I parted ways at the train station. From afar, I spotted a familiar figure, and as I drew closer, I realized it was Lin Xia.

"Hmph…" Lin Xia sneered at me with disdain.

What was that for? How intriguing...

Of course, I wasn't about to tolerate her attitude, so I responded with an even louder huff.

Seeing the tension escalating, Lin Yu hastily intervened, pulling Lin Xia aside while engaging me in a chat via WeChat.

Lin Yu: "I'm sorry, Bai Ci. I'll try my best to prevent you from meeting my senior sister in the future."

Me: "It's alright. I just find it odd. Your senior sister just lost to me. Does that really warrant such animosity?"

Frankly, I couldn't wrap my head around it. Was it really necessary? It wasn't.

Victories and losses are part of the game. How old is Li Fan? And how old is Lin Xia?

Isn't it normal for her to lose?

Lin Yu: "My senior sister is very competitive, and she believes you're not worthy of such an extraordinary immortal... Please don't be angry. That's just who she is, and even I have trouble dealing with her at times."

    Lin Yu: "Wait, Bai Ci..."

    Me: "? What's wrong?"

This time, Lin Yu took quite a while before responding.

Lin Yu: "My senior sister mentioned just now... that her immortal has already grown five tails..."
