Chapter 109: A Sudden Throb of the Heart

As the typhoon moved on, the rain began to let up.

Qin Mu and Master Xinhai whispered about the situation in Beiming City while arranging for an undamaged bus to transport Wei Anguo and the three exhausted rooftop team members still trapped upstairs.

Guan Yuanfeng, concerned about the inexperience of the numerous psychics, decided to accompany Jiang Rongqian to oversee the transport. He knew some of the people inside, which would aid in the interrogation.

When they returned, Zhou Yun was busy cooking in the kitchen. He looked up and saw Guan Yuanfeng coming back. "Where's Captain Jiang?" he asked.

Guan Yuanfeng replied, "He stayed behind to discuss advancements in communication technology with Zhu Zhuan. It's livelier over there, and they need help with the interrogation. Many staff from the herb garden are worried about the situation in the city, so they organized vehicles to go back to Beiming and check. The herb garden is short-staffed."

Zhou Yun said, "The power and communication infrastructure is severely damaged, and with the apocalypse upon us, it will take a long time to restore them, unlike before. Beiming doesn't have an official garrison either; it depends on the city lord's guard team for maintenance and repairs, which makes it even slower."

Guan Yuanfeng remained silent, only stepping forward to help wash the pots in the sink. Zhou Yun poured the freshly stewed lamb from the pressure cooker and asked, "We brought a lamb earlier, and there's still half left. I added some Astragalus root to the soup. How about we have lamb noodles tonight?"

Guan Yuanfeng said, "I'll handle the noodles. You go rest."

    Zhou Yun smiled, "I'm fine."

But Guan Yuanfeng suddenly reached out and pressed his hand on Zhou Yun's shoulder. Caught off guard, Zhou Yun's face turned pale, and he let out a cry. Guan Yuanfeng looked at him deeply, "I just asked Wei Anguo. His mechanical claw has a grip strength of 50 kilograms. With one grab, he shattered your shoulder."

    Zhou Yun: "..."

Guan Yuanfeng stared at him, "You hastily repaired it, but your energy and blood couldn't replenish in time. With your psychic energy depleted and the shoulder involving joints and ligaments, so close to the heart, it might not heal correctly. You should stop doing anything and go to bed to rest properly."

"Otherwise, I'll head to Nirvana Manor tomorrow and bring Yao Lao, Dr. Qi, and Zhang Guangming here to examine you."

Zhou Yun, accurately hit where it hurt, chuckled, "The typhoon hasn't completely passed yet. Why bring them back? Taking a helicopter is risky... I'm really fine. I'm just a bit hungry..."

Guan Yuanfeng said, "I'll cook the noodles quickly. If you're bored, go rest on the sofa."

    Zhou Yun replied, "Alright."

He went and sat on the large leather sofa, feeling the plush comfort of the leather. He watched Guan Yuanfeng standing in the kitchen, his broad shoulders and long legs, the defined muscles of his arms beneath the short-sleeved camouflage shirt, and his back muscles, which were particularly attractive.

    It made him even hungrier...

Guan Yuanfeng finished cooking the noodles and brought them to the dining table. In just ten minutes, Zhou Yun had already fallen asleep on the sofa, clearly drained, his face and lips as pale as paper.

He had single-handedly fought against the entire elite force under Tan Lang. Earlier, he had asked about the situation and learned that the psychics sent to the herb garden were low-level, relying mainly on group combat and firearms. Nearly all psychics of the third tier and above were stationed at Yunding Mountain Villa, with the goal of capturing him alive. However, Wei Anguo disclosed that after Qi Sha departed the villa, a kill order had been issued.

It was clear that they recognized that Zhou Yun's abilities far surpassed their expectations and that he would never be of use to them. Keeping him alive would only make him a significant threat.

Hearing Wei Anguo's words, Guan Yuanfeng wished he could have struck him with lightning right then.

He sat on the sofa beside Zhou Yun. Psychics have sharp senses, but Zhou Yun didn't move, sleeping soundly.

He reached out and gently unbuttoned Zhou Yun's shirt, pulling it aside to examine his shoulder. Unlike the "healing and restoration" of light abilities, wood-based healing focuses on regeneration, so the newly formed skin was extremely fragile. The uneven, jagged skin tone revealed how terrifying the wound had been before treatment.

Under the thin, translucent skin, he could see the shoulder joint, faint blue veins, and the protruding collarbone. The heart beat rhythmically, seemingly normal, but he knew that if Zhou Yun hadn't dodged that critical sneak attack, he would have descended from the helicopter to find a corpse with a bloody hole in its heart.

The mere thought of such a possibility nearly stopped his heart. He couldn't imagine what he would have chosen to do in that moment.

He had killed people and zombies, seen many corpses, and personally prepared the bodies of fallen comrades for their final journey. But he felt that if he had seen Zhou Yun's corpse today, he would have completely lost his mind, seeking vengeance against the entire world, holding everyone accountable.

Zhou Yun was indeed strong. Out of the five teams, except for the three trapped on the rooftop, the other groups consisted of two combatants and one healer. Single-handedly, with Comet, he captured twelve individuals within an hour and then returned to fight Qi Sha. Tan Lang had been sent to Nanshan Herb Garden, leading him to underestimate the gravity of the situation, thinking it would be easy to fight Qi Sha alone with Comet.

Perhaps he was too intrigued by the high-level psychic techniques and let his guard down, enabling Wei Anguo to successfully ambush him.

To put it bluntly, he was still too soft-hearted. He had captured all twelve alive at the time, and when he killed Seven Kill, he hesitated, his face filled with regret.

The other side, though, had first thought to cripple his legs to keep him from moving, and later outright demanded his death.

In battle, if you're not focused on wiping out the enemy's active forces and attacking vital points to restrict their movement, you can easily be outmaneuvered in a close fight.

But he knew Zhou Yun couldn't change this trait. No matter how strong he was, at his core, he was still that life-saving doctor.

He gently pressed a finger on Zhou Yun's shoulder. Zhou Yun opened his eyes, and they locked gazes. He probably wasn't fully awake yet. After a moment of confusion, his face was filled with bewilderment.

Guan Yuanfeng pulled up Zhou Yun's shirt: "Time for noodles. I noticed you were asleep and thought I'd check your wound."

Zhou Yun: "..." His ears slowly warmed up, a delayed reaction, watching as Guan Yuanfeng stood up and pushed the bowl of noodles and chopsticks in front of the seat, pulling out the chair to invite him to eat.

Zhou Yun buttoned up his shirt, stood up, and walked over to eat noodles, asking him: "What are you planning to tell General Tan when we go back?"

    Guan Yuanfeng said: "The truth."

Zhou Yun said: "Don't be too tough on yourself. In these end times, survival comes first. No point in dealing with these small-minded folks. Just talk to General Tan and be careful to guard against them. We need to beef up our strength fast; this should've been a big deterrent for them." He didn't want Guan Yuanfeng to get caught up in such scheming and intrigue.

Guan Yuanfeng said: "You were injured."

Zhou Yun: "..." It's all healed up, so why's he still so hung up on it?

He quickly said: "It's nothing, just a minor injury—I have that ginseng, I recover quickly."

Guan Yuanfeng said: "I'll make sure General Ye pays for this."

Zhou Yun felt a chill at Guan Yuanfeng's cold words: "Don't kill anyone. You can't kill everyone, and you'll just end up branded, making everyone feel justified in condemning you."

Guan Yuanfeng said: "I know, you don't need to worry about me."

He didn't mention what would happen after they returned, which made Zhou Yun even more worried, so he offered some tips on staying under the radar. Guan Yuanfeng only verbally agreed, but his expression remained gloomy. Seeing him like this, Zhou Yun could only rack his brains: "Speaking of which, this time around, I picked up the fog summoning trick, inspired by this Seven Killers, and also comprehended a new skill. Do you want to see it?"

Although Guan Yuanfeng didn't want him to use his psychic abilities, seeing Zhou Yun's expectant eyes, he still said: "What skill? If it consumes too much, forget it."

Zhou Yun smiled: "No... it's similar to the fog summoning technique, requiring just a little light... very clever... look."

He extended his palm, and a milky white mist slowly rose. After a while, a rainbow rose in his palm, seven colors dazzling and magnificent, small and exquisite, yet incomparable.

Holding the rainbow in his hand, he looked up at Guan Yuanfeng and smiled. Guan Yuanfeng could even see the brilliant rainbow in his eyes, and a feeling hard to put into words suddenly welled up in him.

Three days later, Guan Yuanfeng and Jiang Rongqian took a helicopter back to Central Base. The rain had just stopped, and looking out from the cockpit window, a splendid rainbow spanned the sky, breathtakingly beautiful. Jiang Rongqian exclaimed: "A rainbow, so beautiful."

Guan Yuanfeng looked at the rainbow, knowing it was Zhou Yun seeing him off.

This person was like a rainbow, splendid and rich, yet easy to miss, a beauty hard to possess.
