Chapter 27
byChapter 27
After doing the deed, Lu Ke bolted out the door in a panic, quickly flagged down a taxi, and only after sitting in the car for a full half minute did Pink Soul, Red Soul, and the system snap out of their daze.
Red Soul exhaled: "...Our girl is really something, isn't she?"
The system: "That bite was full force, no holding back."
Pink Soul remained silent: "Looks like it drew blood."
The two souls and the system were quiet for a second, then burst into hearty laughter together.
Hahahaha, so damn satisfying! It turns out that getting physical and dishing out some pain after being mentally abused is so gratifying. All that pent-up frustration just melted away!
On the other side, Feng Yiyan was taken to the hospital.
Lu Ke really bit down hard, and Feng Yiyan indeed bled a lot. Besides treating the wound, he also needed an immunoglobulin shot.
Due to Feng Yiyan's special status, they went to a more discreet private hospital.
That hospital was owned by the Yang family, so Yang Yuguo was the first to receive the news. Upon learning that Feng Yiyan had been bitten on the leg and was now seeing a doctor at the hospital, he was momentarily stunned, then laughed so hard he nearly dropped his helmet and fell off his bike.
Who would dare bite Feng Yiyan? Who could be so bizarre as to bite Feng Yiyan's leg? He guessed it was most likely Lu Ke.
The only one who keeps sending Feng Yiyan to the hospital is that fierce lady.
He immediately made two phone calls to inform his two troublemaking buddies. Nan Feng and Qiu Jiapo, true to their nature, also immediately dropped what they were doing and rushed to the hospital, not wanting to miss the show.
The wound was on the outer side of the thigh, so Feng Yiyan had to take off his pants to let the doctor clean the wound.
The doctor in his sixties had a serious expression, his white coat neatly buttoned, carefully handling the wound with cotton held by forceps. He looked very professional, but the twitching at the corners of his mouth betrayed his unnaturalness, as if he was holding back laughter.
He probably never expected to treat a thigh bite.
Feng Yiyan took several deep breaths to adjust his mood, but his face was still stormy.
This felt like a nightmare on repeat.
A month ago, he had also been treated at this hospital for a tailbone injury.
He could guess with his eyes closed that after he left, the hospital staff would be frantically discussing this incident in private, with lots of laughing and emoji-filled WeChat messages.
Despite this, Feng Yiyan still managed to keep a straight face. Ignoring his bare legs and the bloody bite mark, he still looked intimidating.
Due to the inconvenient location of the wound, Lu Shiling waited outside, while only Lu Zheyuan accompanied him in the room.
He was also very awkward, trying to make conversation: "...Does it hurt?"
"What do you think?"
Feng Yiyan, provoked by his question, retorted without mercy.
Several gauze pads were soaked with blood; a bite from a vicious dog would probably cause this much bleeding.
Lu Zheyuan, having his nose rubbed in the dirt, mumbled an "Mmm."
Alright, it does look painful. Just looking at it makes him want to hiss.
Lu Ke went all in—grabbing his thigh, eyes blazing, and chomping down with a growl... Recalling the chaos at that moment, his expression turned strange. Before he could laugh, he sucked in the flesh on both sides of his cheeks, struggling to maintain a solemn face.
To be honest, he was unsure about his feelings towards Lu Ke now.
He had already decided to stand by Shi Ling's side and help her fend off the rival, giving up on the slight affection and friendship he had for Lu Ke... but Lu Ke always managed to do something unexpected. She actually came back and bit Feng Yiyan, which was kind of funny. What was he supposed to do?
After the wound was treated, Feng Yiyan also received a tetanus shot.
That shot was brutal—a long needle digging into his flesh, moving around. Lu Zheyuan couldn’t even look.
After it was over, the doctor told Feng Yiyan that the wound was pretty deep and might scar, suggesting he could come back to their hospital for some cosmetic treatment later.
Of course, if he wanted to keep it, that was an option too. But before the doctor could finish, Feng Yiyan interrupted with a dark face.
Who in their right mind would want to keep a bite mark?
Yang Yuguo, Qiu Jiapo, and Nan Feng arrived at the hospital one after another. Even though they rushed, they were still too late. Seeing Feng Yiyan fully dressed, they were bummed they missed seeing him all messed up during the wound cleaning.
Their disappointment was so obvious that Feng Yiyan shot them a cold glare.
Qiu Jiapo coughed lightly, putting on a serious and concerned expression: "Who bit you? Who’s that mean?"
"Who do you think?"
Feng Yiyan sneered, but his face was wooden.
Even though he saw it coming, Qiu Jiapo couldn’t help but laugh at the answer.
Seeing Feng Yiyan’s look, he quickly covered his nose to hide his laugh and said righteously: "Lu Ke’s really out of line. As your bro, I’m totally calling her out!"
Feng Yiyan: ...
Like he couldn’t tell they were enjoying this?
Yang Yuguo was trying not to laugh, thinking of the saddest things he could, but he still cracked up.
Nan Feng’s eyes were also filled with amusement: "What happened? How’d she end up biting your thigh? Did you piss her off?"
After that half-joke, the room went quiet, and the vibe got weird.
Qiu Jiapo and Yang Yuguo exchanged looks, sensing something was wrong, and were a little shocked.
Lu Zheyuan said indifferently: "What’s there to talk about? It’s done."
Yang Yuguo looked at him: "Old Lu, you were there, right? Spill it. As your bros, we deserve to know, don’t we?"
The last sentence carried a bit of a joking tone, trying to lighten the mood.
Lu Zheyuan ignored it, acting like he didn’t hear.
Qiu Jiapo shrugged, smoothing things over: "If you’re not gonna say, we’ll just ask Lu Ke later."
Still, nobody said a word.
Qiu Jiapo glanced at Lu Shiling, who had been sitting silently on the sofa in the lounge. Lu Shiling perked up and gave him a weak smile.
He then glanced at Lu Zheyuan, who was frowning and clearly not in the mood to talk, then at Feng Yiyan, who was staring at the floor, deep in thought.
Qiu Jiapo arched an eyebrow.
Looks like something really bad went down.
Out of the blue, Nan Feng asked Feng Yiyan, "She bit you, will you retaliate against her?"
Feng Yiyan paused for a moment, then perked up, grinding his molars and sneering slowly, "Why wouldn't I retaliate?"
Yang Yuguo, in a strange tone, tried to lighten the mood, "Have mercy, have mercy, sir!"
Nan Feng frowned and asked Feng Yiyan, "How do you plan to retaliate against her?"
Qiu Jiapo hastily confirmed, "A Yan, your fans won't know about this, right?"
Feng Yiyan's fans are notoriously rabid, with a fierce reputation. If they found out about Lu Ke, it would be a real nightmare; she might even get eggs thrown at her on the street.
Feng Yiyan's forehead vein twitched in irritation.
If he intended for his fans to know, he wouldn’t need to do anything, just let the incident ferment. But after being bitten, he still had his assistant stay behind at the Indian restaurant to handle the aftermath.
Great, after being bitten by her, he still had to cover it up.
The more Feng Yiyan thought about it, the darker his expression grew. He immediately called Assistant Fang, "Tell her to get her ass over here right now."
Assistant Fang was lounging in the villa, binge-watching a drama when she received the call. Hearing her boss's urgent, angry tone, she bolted upright, "Who needs to come over?"
Feng Yiyan angrily enunciated, "Who else!"
"You’ve got half an hour to get her to Jiashi Hospital, or kiss your quarterly bonus goodbye."
After saying that, he hung up.
Assistant Fang was stunned.
It had happened—the classic domineering CEO ultimatum: if you can't find someone within five minutes, your bonus is gone.
She stared at her phone in disbelief and dread.
Everyone in the hospital overheard Feng Yiyan's call.
Yang Yuguo asked him with some concern, "You’re not planning to have your bodyguards rough her up, are you?"
Feng Yiyan: "I’ll only retaliate in kind."
He looked at Yang Yuguo, "Lend me your two dogs. Call home and have your nanny bring them here."
Yang Yuguo was genuinely panicked now, "What exactly are you planning to do?"
Feng Yiyan coldly curled his lips, "Obviously, I want to sic the dogs on her. Since she likes biting people, let her experience what it's really like to be bitten by a dog."
The room fell silent for a few seconds.
They hadn’t expected Feng Yiyan to be so cutthroat, as if he was planning some inhumane retaliation, but it turned out to be this?
Having Lu Ke bitten in return was indeed poetic justice, but Yang Yuguo’s two Chihuahuas barely weighed five pounds combined; how much damage could they do?
At least get a decent-sized dog, right?
What a joke.
After a few seconds of speechlessness, Yang Yuguo covered his face and feigned a scream, "What, don't slander our babies! My two little darlings never bite anyone!"
In fact, those two Chihuahuas, despite being mini, do have a tendency to bite. Even Yang Yuguo himself was almost bitten once, but being bitten wasn't that big of a deal. However, their pre-bite antics are quite a sight—stretching their necks out while being held, snapping at the air, eyes bulging, creating a perfect mix of horror and comedy.
Feng Yiyan scoffed, "Cut the crap, bring them over."
Yang Yuguo had no choice but to suppress his laughter and call the housekeeper at home.
Luckily, it's their own hospital, so dogs are allowed; otherwise, they wouldn't be able to help Feng Yiyan carry out such a childish revenge.
After making the call, Yang Yuguo asked him, "And after the bite, is that it?"
"Of course not," Feng Yiyan said calmly, his eyes deep, "I will personally help her get the immunoglobulin shot."
That would also even the score for the injection.
After these words, the air fell silent again for a few seconds.
This silence felt longer than the one in "The Bridges of Madison County."
Great, so all this revenge talk was just a joke.
Feng Yiyan looked at them somewhat puzzled.
Yang Yuguo was the first to react, clutching his chest dramatically, looking at Feng Yiyan with a tragic tone, "Feng Yiyan, you, are, so, cruel! You actually want to personally give her this shot, do you want to kill her with pain?!"
He slapped his thigh, laughing, "Oh man, this revenge is too much—it scared me to death! Let me laugh for a sec."
Feng Yiyan, red-faced and furious, grabbed a cushion and hurled it at him.
Lu Shiling stayed out of the conversation the whole time.
She sat stone-faced on the sofa by the wall, watching them gleefully discuss their childish revenge plans.
The situation had not only gone completely off the rails but was also heading in a bizarre direction. She already didn't know what to say.
.
After hanging up, Assistant Fang paused for a moment before realizing Feng Yiyan meant Lu Ke!
The quarterly bonus is worth tens of thousands—she can't lose it!
Her scalp prickled, and she dialed Lu Ke's number in a panic, eyes wide.
In the taxi, the phone in Lu Ke's pocket rang.
But the guilty pup didn't dare answer Assistant Fang's call, hanging up and guiltily covering the phone, pretending not to notice.
Then the WeChat notifications chimed again—Assistant Fang, seeing no answer, started bombarding her with messages, one after another, making her heart race.
Lu Ke panicked, unfamiliar with her phone, and for a moment couldn't figure out how to silence the WeChat notifications. Then she noticed Qiu Jiapo texting her on WeChat.
"Where are you?"
"I heard you bit Feng Yiyan?"
"This guy's losing it at the hospital, planning to 'really' get back at you—don't let him catch you!"
Lu Ke didn't catch the sarcasm in the "really." After reading the messages, she gulped, too scared to check for more, and hastily turned off her phone, only switching it back on to pay the taxi fare.
Back at the apartment, Lu Ke rushed to pack her things.
She started with the fridge, but all the snacks were gone, leaving only empty wrappers. As the saying goes, you can't keep leftovers in a doghouse—she'd already eaten all the food she bought the past two days.
After a brief pause, she dashed into the bedroom to pack her clothes, quickly grabbed a few items before heading out, leaving behind all her cosmetics and skincare products.
On her way downstairs, she remembered Jiang Chun and Jiang Xia, the caretakers, and sent them a message on WeChat.
"I'm moving out and won't be coming back to Modu. Thanks for looking after me all this time. Your cooking was amazing! You guys are great!"
She added another line.
"I won't be using this WeChat account anymore."
To avoid any backlash, Lu Ke decided to leave Modu right away.
While heading to the airport, Lu Ke asked the system, "System, how much longer do I have to live?"
The system replied, "Once the storyline ends, your body will die right away. So, you have two years and three months left."
Lu Ke said, "Oh."
The taxi sped onto the overpass, and the outside scenery flew by.
The light system in Lu Ke's mind reclined, looking at the scenery outside through Lu Ke's eyes, as the Red Soul and Pink Soul groups went quiet, quieter than the air in the taxi.
Even though they knew Lu Ke wasn't great at completing tasks, they didn't expect the task to end so suddenly.
She only managed to earn a hundred points, nowhere near enough for reincarnation insurance, so these two years and three months were all Lu Ke had left to live.
Pink Soul suddenly chimed in, "I have thirteen hundred points, I can give Lu Ke three hundred."
"Yeah, let's transfer some points!" Red Soul said, "I can also give some to the silly dog... but I only have eleven hundred, so I can only transfer a hundred." She sighed; if they had finished the whole storyline, she could have earned twenty-one hundred points, but even though she tried her hardest, she only managed to get eleven hundred.
Pink Soul asked the system, "I heard that transferring points incurs an eighty percent fee, is that true?"
The system said, "It's true."
Pink Soul worriedly fell silent, her soul dimming.
Together, she and Red Soul could only transfer four hundred points. After deducting eighty percent, only eighty points would go to Lu Ke, plus the original hundred Lu Ke had, totaling only one hundred and eighty.
Even if Lu Ke now decided to swallow her pride, not fear retaliation, and go back to finish that MV to earn another hundred points, it would only add up to two hundred and eighty, still twenty points short of the three hundred needed for random reincarnation as an animal.
Just twenty points short.
Red Soul was frantic with anxiety.
Lu Ke herself, however, was quite philosophical and comforted them.
"It's okay, dogs naturally have short lifespans. My kind averages about ten years. I lived three years as a dog, and another thirteen years on the system mountain, totaling sixteen years, which is already much longer than most dogs. And I still have two more years to live, isn't that great?"
Hearing this, the two soul groups felt even sadder.
Red Soul gritted her teeth, "Damn it, I'll keep three hundred for myself and transfer eight hundred to Lu Ke, that should be enough for her to reincarnate, right?"
The system was stunned, "With three hundred points, you can only reincarnate randomly as various creatures. You might become a pig, a duck, a cat, a dog, or even a fly. Don't you want to be human?"
Red Soul retorted, "What if I reincarnate as a panda?"
With so many creatures in the world, the chance of becoming a panda is less than one in ten thousand. The most likely outcomes are becoming an insect or a farm animal, as they are the most numerous.
The system stopped scaring them, "Alright, alright, you bunch of paupers, don't transfer your points. Keep your thousand or so points for yourselves. I'll transfer the points for Lu Ke, enough for her to reincarnate."
This is really a stroke of luck.
Red Soul held back her excitement: "Spill it, damn it! I knew you must have saved up a lot of points. Come on, how much can you transfer?"
The system said modestly, "Just so-so, wanna guess?"
Now the system wasn't as anxious as it had been at the Indian restaurant.
Actually, it had acted that way to push Lu Ke to make one last effort, preferably to continue the storyline and earn more points, since the transfer fees were indeed quite high, and it would be better if she earned some herself.
But now that things have come to this, let it go.
Pink Soul guessed, "Can you transfer a four-digit amount?"
The system still smiled without answering.
Red Soul was shocked: "Wait, could you actually transfer a five-digit amount to Lu Ke?"
The system nodded with a smug grin.
Red Soul was stunned for a moment, then suddenly jumped up and lunged at it: "You've been holding out on us! Turns out you're loaded! I can't believe you're playing favorites! Damn system, why don't you share some points with us! With a five-digit amount, can she get a good rebirth? Ahhh, I want a good rebirth too, give me some, give me some!"
When she was doing tasks, the system was all business, barely speaking, nothing like this. Damn it, so biased!
The system ducked and covered its head: "After giving to Lu Ke, I'll be broke too, can't even spare ten points, so forget it." It's also fortunate that it held back from shocking Lu Ke earlier, otherwise it really would have been short.
Pink Soul also joined the fray.
"System, you're really playing favorites, why not let us take it out on you?"
The system shouted, "If you can, let me raise you for thirteen years too, and I'll treat you like my own!"
"Come on, raise us! You raise us!"
The three light orbs tussled endlessly in Lu Ke's mind, causing chaos. Lu Ke tried to break it up at first, but seeing they were just playing, she let them have their fun.
The two souls were just playing; having been in Lu Ke's mind for so long, day by day softened by her warm and kind spirit, their hostility had faded, and they had grown to love the little dog. The better the dog's rebirth, the happier they were.
After their fun, Lu Ke sincerely thanked the system.
If she could live, she certainly didn't want to die; the system had been really good to her.
The system said, "Then listen to me more in the future."
Lu Ke agreed earnestly, "Okay."
The system was pleased: "Where are you headed after the airport? Now that you're off the tasks, do whatever you want—travel the world, there's great food out there."
At the mention of food, Lu Ke's eyes lit up, but after a moment, she said, "I'll go see Mom and Dad first, then travel the world."
The Mom and Dad Lu Ke mentioned were Feng Yiyan's folks.
At first, Feng Yiyan was withdrawn and unwelcoming, so she was raised by them. Shortly after they adopted her, the pandemic hit, and the housekeepers were gone, so they had to take care of her themselves. Thus, a wealthy young master had to pinch his nose and scoop poop, while a young lady had to tilt her head and mop up pee.
Remembering their exasperated faces at that time, Lu Ke blinked nostalgically.
The taxi arrived at the airport, and Lu Ke bought a ticket to Hong Kong without hesitation, with the system pulling strings to get her a pass.
Feng Yiyan waited at the hospital for half an hour without seeing anyone.
The incompetent Assistant Fang apologized sheepishly, Feng Yiyan hung up with a scowl, and hired professionals to track Lu Ke down himself. However, by the time they found her trail, the plane Lu Ke was on had already taken off.
