Chapter 148: School Murder Case, Are They the Killers?
byChapter 148: School Murder Case—Are They the Culprits?
The text mentioned his fiancée's accidental death, which led him to remain unmarried for life. He even misunderstood a friend, causing a rift in their brotherhood—something he deeply regretted.
This was merely a brief mention, with the news focusing more on the tragedy of his wrongful conviction. His youth was spent behind bars—how heartbreaking!
And he was a soldier with such a promising future!
Calculating the timeline, he must have been imprisoned around those two years. What a tragedy.
Moreover, that brief mention made it clear he later realized he had wronged Quan Ruifeng. Perhaps key evidence was still missing—like that crucial diary. Or perhaps another diary existed, documenting the young girl’s private feelings, only to be discovered years later, revealing the truth to everyone.
But Xia Xian didn't want Quan Ruifeng to suffer this injustice any longer. She wanted to help him uncover the truth now—if only she knew where that diary was hidden, or who had eventually found it in her past life.
Perhaps it was Quan Ruifeng himself.
He must have never given up.
Too many thoughts flooded Xia Xian’s mind at once, leaving her overwhelmed. Yet, she didn't know how to explain it to Quan Ruifeng.
“What’s wrong? Are you scared?”
Seeing her silent, Quan Ruifeng couldn’t help but playfully rub Xia Xian’s cheek, eager to hear her voice. Otherwise, he’d fear she no longer loved him—that she might distance herself because of this. He couldn't bear that.
But after years of misunderstanding, even Quan Ruifeng had almost convinced himself that Yue Hangyi’s fiancée never loved Yue Hangyi—that she still loved him, and that was why she couldn’t endure the engagement and took her own life.
Otherwise, why would no one believe him?
Quan Ruifeng’s breathing grew ragged, his vision swimming. His eyes looked terrifyingly hollow.
Snapping back to reality, Xia Xian hugged him tightly again.
“No, I’m not scared! I believe you—you’re innocent! I was just thinking about how we can find evidence to prove it. You shouldn’t bear their accusations anymore. You’ve suffered enough all these years!”
Xia Xian said, her voice filled with tenderness, patting his broad back to help him relax.
“We’ll find the evidence together! We’ll let everyone know the truth!”
Xia Xian declared with certainty, her voice clear and strong, like a powerful tonic, invigorating Quan Ruifeng. His spirits lifted instantly, and he became re-energized.
Quan Ruifeng nodded.
“Thank you, sweetheart. Thank you for believing in me. I won’t stop searching for the truth. I must make them understand what really happened back then. No one should be wronged or carry false blame!”
He shrugged off his despondency, regaining his composure.
“That’s right! Only if we stay strong and never give up can we uncover the truth!”
Xia Xian continued encouraging him. Afraid Xia Yuan might blab and upset Gao Shuang and her mother, Xia Xian quickly pulled Quan Ruifeng back home. This wasn’t something that could be resolved overnight—they needed a long-term plan and couldn't rush it.
Fortunately, Xia Yuan didn’t spill anything, and the two managed to play it off. The next day, Xia Xian and Quan Ruifeng took Lei Juan and Xia Yuan out for a day of fun before preparing to send them home. Their train was early in the morning, so they had to pack that night.
“Xiao Yuan, help Mom carry these things back. Remember—these are for Big Brother and Sister-in-Law, not Second Brother and his wife. Tell them it’s my decision. And these are for you and our parents.”
Xia Xian meticulously sorted the items, giving Xia Yuan strict instructions.
Xia Yuan, sharp when it came to memorizing things, waved her off.
“Don’t worry, I won’t mess up! Leave it to me! Oh, by the way, do you know what happened to Chu Sheng and his family?”
Xia Yuan had meant to tell his sister all about the Chu family drama but had forgotten until now, right before leaving.
“Hmm? No. Didn’t the Gao family already put them in their place?”
Xia Xian raised an eyebrow. Surely they couldn’t cause any more trouble.
“Yeah, but they were put in their place too well. They couldn’t even get near our house—the Gao family followed them everywhere. Chu Sheng and his mother were driven mad. They lost their jobs, couldn’t earn money, and had to rely on his mother taking in laundry to survive. But even then, because the Gao family shadowed her, no one would hire her. They nearly starved.”
“Before Lunar New Year, Chu Sheng even knelt and begged me for mercy! He said if our family could just call off the Gao family, they’d never bother us again. Sis, you nailed it!”
Xia Yuan clapped excitedly. His sister was brilliant—no wonder she was a university student!
Truly, it took a villain to tame a villain.
“Is that so? Then I’ll have to pay them their due soon. They’ve done such a thorough job. Here, take this box of sweets back for them as thanks. Ask them to keep an eye on Chu Sheng a little longer—I suspect he’s only pretending to surrender.”
Xia Xian was cautious. She wanted to finish them for good to prevent any future trouble.
“No problem! Mission accomplished! Grandma Gao and the others love this job! They even thanked me and told me to pass it on to you!”
Xia Yuan grinned from ear to ear. Seeing his good-for-nothing ex-brother-in-law suffer was beyond satisfying.
“Remember, don’t resort to fights—solve problems with your mind, got it?”
Xia Xian took the opportunity to lecture her brother. Hesitating, she then asked about Chu Nannan—not out of concern, but to ensure she wouldn’t show up again.
“Do you know how Chu Sheng’s daughter is doing?”
“She’s not right in the head, always calling you her mom or something. The Residents' Committee Director wanted to send her to a hospital, but the Chu family couldn’t afford it. No one else was willing to pay, so they dropped it.”
“But she’s not with the Chu family anymore. She’s staying with Bai Lian now. Honestly, Bai Lian seems more like her real mom, taking her in like that.”
Xia Yuan snorted.
This immediately set off alarm bells for Xia Xian. Bai Lian was no angel—she wouldn’t help without an ulterior motive. Was she using Chu Nannan to get future insights for business profits?
Or to blackmail her?
But if Chu Sheng and Chu Nannan had already failed, what made Bai Lian think she could succeed?
Xia Xian drifted into deep thought, wondering what leverage Chu Nannan could possibly have left.
“Forget about it. Just focus on keeping things stable at home. If Second Brother and his wife cause trouble again, call me secretly.”
“Got it!”
Xia Yuan gave a mock salute, proudly accepting the mission.
With their private conversation concluded, the siblings walked out as if nothing had happened.
The next day, after seeing Xia Yuan and Lei Juan off at the train station, Quan Ruifeng and Xia Xian returned to school.
They had squeezed their wedding into a busy schedule, and now academic duties awaited them.
As the valedictorian, Xia Xian had speeches to give and endless visits from classmates. Quan Ruifeng was no exception. The moment they stepped onto campus, all eyes were on them—both praise and pestering.
They planned to focus on their studies, but then—a murder occurred at the school!
And the clues even pointed to them!
