    Chapter 52: Disguised Weirdo

On Chi Luoxi's first day of college, He Angxiao personally took him there.

He Angxiao initially wanted to pull some strings to get Chi Luoxi day student status, worried about his special status and the risk of exposure, and saw no need for him to squeeze into a dorm.

But Chi Luoxi shook his head and refused.

He couldn't be too special in those first ten days or so.

He Angxiao looked at his earnest expression, relented, but kept grumbling: "Fine, suit yourself. But if you get sunburned, don't call me crying."

Hearing this, Chi Luoxi immediately leaned in and gave a loud kiss on He Angxiao's taut lips.

That kiss shut down his feigned coldness and nagging. He pursed his lips, said nothing more, and tacitly agreed to Chi Luoxi staying in the dorm for those ten-plus days.

As it turned out, Chi Luoxi's college life was quite fulfilling.

In his dorm, except for one classmate from out of town, the rest were locals from Jiangzhou.

On the day Chi Luoxi checked in, dragging his suitcase into the dormitory building, his strikingly good looks drew a lot of attention. Passing students, both male and female, couldn't help but turn their heads, whispering among themselves.

He was simply too handsome, his beauty surpassing the ordinary.

He quickly joined their class's WeChat group, which immediately became lively.

His roommates were also very warm, telling him what time to meet up and where to pick up his training uniform. He Angxiao stood nearby, watching the group messages on his phone screen, then suddenly looked up and asked Chi Luoxi: "Can I join this group?"

Chi Luoxi: "Honey, this is a student group. Only students can join."

In this sacred, youthful campus, He Angxiao dared not speak recklessly. He put on a cool, stern face, claiming to be Chi Luoxi's older brother, looking every bit the imposing patriarch.

He Angxiao personally made Chi Luoxi's bed, making it with military precision.

When he finished tidying up and turned around, Chi Luoxi had already disappeared, his curiosity getting the best of him. He couldn't contain himself and had already run off to explore.

He Angxiao had many complaints about the dorm.

It was small and cramped, with two bunk beds and a narrow aisle. The window wasn't big enough, and the lighting wasn't great.

He knew Chi Luoxi wasn't that delicate; he was easily satisfied. As long as he had a place to stay, he'd think it was fine and be content.

    But He Angxiao cared.

Precisely because he knew Chi Luoxi was easily satisfied and not picky, He Angxiao found everything about the environment unsatisfactory. The bed wasn't soft enough—he worried it would hurt his back sleeping on it. The light wasn't bright enough—he feared it would strain his eyes when reading. The shared bathroom wasn't clean or hygienic enough.

To shut He Angxiao up from nagging in the dorm, Chi Luoxi dragged him out to tour the campus.

Along the way, He Angxiao's reminders were like a broken record.

"Remember to eat on time. Don't keep eating the greasy food from the cafeteria. Eating there a few days is okay, but Su Yi's cooking is way more your style."

"Get back to the dorm early at night. Don't go wandering off by yourself."

"If anyone bullies you, whether classmate or teacher, call me immediately."

Chi Luoxi responded with vague "uh-huh"s and "okay"s, but his mind had already drifted to the scenery along the path and the novel sights. He Angxiao's words basically went in one ear and out the other.

As they walked along the campus's famous tree-lined avenue, Chi Luoxi naturally took He Angxiao's hand.

What He Angxiao loved about Chi Luoxi was that he never tried to hide their relationship.

Around them were young faces full of vitality, coming and going. There were boys whizzing by on bicycles, groups of girls laughing and messing around, and the air was filled with a carefree, youthful atmosphere.

Chi Luoxi suddenly pressed against the chain-link fence of the school basketball court, his eyes shining as he watched the boys playing inside. He said excitedly to He Angxiao: "Honey, there are so many people here! It's so lively!"

He Angxiao had a long list of things to remind him about—safety, studies, socializing—but seeing Chi Luoxi leaning on the fence, his silhouette outlined by the setting sun with a soft golden glow, and hearing his pure, curious exclamation, all those nagging reminders suddenly got stuck in his throat.

Looking at this lover full of life, who has always been endlessly curious about the world, a corner of He Angxiao's heart turned to mush.

He Angxiao thought that if one could forever maintain such a lively curiosity and perception, that could be a talent in itself.

He truly hoped Chi Luoxi could stay like this forever, always full of interest in everything around him.

Watching the young men sweating on the court, he suddenly said, out of the blue: "I can play basketball too."

Hearing this, Chi Luoxi immediately turned around, looked up at him, his eyes full of curiosity and longing: "Really? Honey, what were you like when you were in school?"

He Angxiao recalled his own school days. He had been really busy, no doubt. The price of being a young achiever was that he never truly enjoyed any youthful leisure. Heavy academic burdens weighed on him, and the business plan kept swirling in his head day and night. Juggling both left him barely any time to breathe.

Back then, romance had zero place in his packed life plan.

His youth was all about textbooks, the glow of business plan documents on screen, and endless competitions and internships.

The carefree fun and high spirits that young people should have—he had missed out on all of it.

Looking at Chi Luoxi, who filled his heart and mind, He Angxiao suddenly felt that those missing, deliberately forgotten fragments of his youth were being filled in, little by little, by this vibrant person.

He Angxiao suspected that his brain was turning into a radish brain by this little radish.

Years later, if someone dissected his brain, they would find it was a radish brain.

Today, dropping Chi Luoxi off for registration, He Angxiao was dressed casually—a simple gray knit sweater paired with nicely tailored casual pants. He had shed some of his usual cold, elite demeanor and looked more relaxed.

Seeing Chi Luoxi's great interest in the basketball court, he took off his thin jacket, stuffed it into Chi Luoxi's arms, signaling him to hold it, and then walked onto the court.

He approached the students playing a half-court game and exchanged a few words with them.

The students were a bit surprised at first, sizing up this tall, impressive-looking guy who wasn't a student, but then their faces lit up with knowing smiles, and they willingly gave up the court.

He Angxiao took the basketball handed to him by one of the boys. Without even warming up, he stepped back, jumped, and shot under Chi Luoxi's expectant gaze.

    "Swish!"

    A clean, net-swishing shot.

"Nice shot!" A low exclamation came from the sidelines.

He Angxiao's movements were smooth and elegant. He made several more shots in succession—from beyond the three-point line, from the free-throw line, even from farther out at the top of the arc. The basketball traced beautiful parabolas, almost every shot nailing the basket with precision, so impressive it was hard to look away.

Chi Luoxi's eyes lit up. When He Angxiao finished his round, he clapped like crazy.

He Angxiao patted the dust off his hands, thanked the students, and walked back to Chi Luoxi. Chi Luoxi looked up at him, his eyes sparkling, and asked curiously: "Honey, you're amazing! What did you say to them?"

He Angxiao: "I told them, 'Hey guys, I'm trying to impress a special someone. Can I borrow the ball to show off? Just for a moment, to show off for the person I'm into.'"

Chi Luoxi glared at He Angxiao, both embarrassed and annoyed.

He Angxiao was just too shameless.

Even in casual clothes, He Angxiao stood there exuding an air of long-standing authority and steadiness in every gesture, making him look anything but a student.

Not that he looked old, but the composure and commanding presence forged by time and business experience set him apart from the vibrant, youthful students around him.

They had a simple dinner, and Chi Luoxi ate with relish, even giving him some of the meat from his own bowl.

After eating, Chi Luoxi said, "Honey, you should go back first. I'll go to the dorm to tidy up and get ready for tonight's class meeting."

He Angxiao looked at him, paused for a moment, then said, "Let me stay with you a bit longer."

Chi Luoxi showed no sign of separation anxiety at all, even seeming a bit excited.

In his heart, He Angxiao was his safe harbor, but by no means a chain tied to his ankle. He was going to embrace his new life, and He Angxiao would always be waiting for him on the shore.

But He Angxiao didn’t see it that way.

Chi Luoxi's heart skipped a beat. He Angxiao's separation anxiety was severe—he might break down outside.

Actually, Chi Luoxi had noticed since returning from Wushan that He Angxiao truly needed to have Chi Luoxi in his sight at all times to feel at ease.

Before he got into college, it was fine. But now that he was enrolled, He Angxiao had many concerns, the main one being that Chi Luoxi couldn't leave his sight.

Chi Luoxi asked Hua Ai what was going on. He hadn't realized He Angxiao was so dependent on him before.

Hua Ai suggested he take He Angxiao to see a doctor; it was a habit he had spoiled him into, to the point where He Angxiao wanted Chi Luoxi to update him even when he went to the bathroom.

Chi Luoxi said to Hua Ai seriously, "Teacher Hua, I know you have issues with my husband, but don’t curse him like that. He just had a checkup and is very healthy—he’s not sick. He just loves me too much."

Hua Ai: "...Respect, blessings, and locked down."

Since they weren't face-to-face, Chi Luoxi didn’t catch the sarcasm in Hua Ai’s tone. He thought Hua Ai had finally blessed them, and said he’d send them a wedding invitation when the time comes.

When they got into He Angxiao’s car parked outside the dorm area, once the door closed, the space became a private haven just for the two of them.

Chi Luoxi leaned over, cupped He Angxiao’s face with both hands, and kissed him while saying earnestly, "Honey, I’m going to school. You’ll see me in just over ten days, and we can video chat every day."

He Angxiao, who could maintain stability in front of others, instantly lost it: "Baby, can't you come live at home? I’ll drive you here every morning and pick you up in the evening. I won’t be late, I promise."

    Without a second thought: "No!"

He Angxiao knew he couldn’t win, so he had to compromise, lowering his voice: "Then repeat our agreement."

Chi Luoxi looked at him: "...Reply to messages promptly, no ignoring, no abandoning."

He Angxiao nodded, satisfied. He took Chi Luoxi’s hand and placed it over his heart: "I beg you, Chi Luoxi, no matter what happens at school—good or bad—even if it's just a mosquito bite, call me immediately. I’m begging you, tell me everything."

Chi Luoxi held He Angxiao’s hand in return, nodding: "Mm-hmm, I know. I promise, honey."

They cuddled for a while longer, and when things started heading in a risqué direction, Chi Luoxi put a stop to it.

He Angxiao felt a bit more at ease then, regaining some of his usual calm. He unbuckled Chi Luoxi’s seatbelt, straightened his collar, and left pretending to be lighthearted.

As the car drove out of the campus, He Angxiao watched Chi Luoxi waving in the rearview mirror, his figure getting smaller. A feeling of emptiness washed over him like a tide.

Back at the lavishly decorated new home, so spacious it echoed with every sound, he couldn't get used to it.

The house was too big, too empty, without Chi Luoxi moving around and talking.

He Angxiao felt like an empty nester.

But Chi Luoxi adapted much faster than he had imagined.

The roommates in the dorm were all easy to get along with.

They introduced themselves, and the atmosphere quickly warmed up.

When they heard Chi Luoxi was from Wushan, a remote little place, the roommates were surprised, saying they never would have guessed and thought he was a local from Jiangzhou who grew up in a big city.

"Wow, Chi Luoxi, your genes are incredible!" one roommate said, staring at his face. "Both brothers look this good? I saw your brother too—he’s stunning! You’re definitely the campus heartthrob this year, no contest!"

Chi Luoxi blinked, bewildered: "Campus heartthrob? Is that some kind of official position? Like, the person who takes care of the grass?"

    Roommates: "…………"

They looked at each other and burst out laughing, finding Chi Luoxi not just handsome but also hilarious.

On the first night, the class had to elect class officers.

Chi Luoxi sat in the audience, watching classmates speak enthusiastically on stage, feeling a bit nervous. He feared he wasn’t capable enough, afraid he’d mess up, so he never raised his hand.

Chi Luoxi quickly found a rhythm that kept him at ease.

Every day, he texted He Angxiao, reporting in detail what he did at school, what cafeteria food he had, funny stories from military training, and what he chatted about with his roommates at night.

His roommates often saw him glued to his phone, typing rapidly, and assumed he was checking in with his girlfriend, like they're in the honeymoon phase.

Once, a roommate teased, "Oh, Chi Luoxi, checking in with your girlfriend? So clingy!"

Chi Luoxi shook his head: "Not a girlfriend. I’m checking in with my older brother."

"It’s just the two of us in our family. My brother gets lonely, so I talk to him every day to let him know what I’m doing, so he doesn’t feel so alone."

The roommates nodded knowingly and started giving him advice.

One said, "Then your brother is too clingy. Why doesn't he get a girlfriend? If he had a sister-in-law, he’d be too busy to bother you, and you’d be free!"

Chi Luoxi listened to their advice and thought to himself: Sister-in-law?

    …Isn’t that me already?

So it’s only natural for He Angxiao to bother him—that’s part of being the sister-in-law.

During military training, Chi Luoxi’s days were extremely packed and exhausting.

The daytime being out in the sun and marching drills drained his energy.

After dinner, he’d take a quick shower, often too tired to even hold his phone, typing a few words or sending an emoji before his eyelids grew heavy and he fell asleep.

Several times, He Angxiao’s messages were only partially answered, as Chi Luoxi lay on his pillow, phone in hand, breathing evenly in sleep.

At home, He Angxiao stared at the "typing…" indicator that went on for half an hour.

Finally, he couldn’t take it anymore.

Even though Chi Luoxi had begged him over and over not to come to campus, he still drove into the university town.

Chi Luoxi's university allowed parents to spectate on campus, as long as they didn't disrupt the training order.

In the evenings, Chi Luoxi's company would do extra drills or stand at attention on the training field.

He Angxiao stood far away outside the chain-link fence of the basketball court, peering inside, but didn't see anyone.

Suddenly someone next to He Angxiao also sidled up, likewise looking toward the training field.

It was an elderly man with graying hair, dressed in a simple Tang suit.

The old man was still twirling a string of beads in his hand. Noticing He Angxiao's gaze, he turned his head and sized him up. Seeing that he was dressed casually but with an impressive bearing, he amiably struck up a conversation: "Young man, is your kid also a freshman here for military training?"

He Angxiao withdrew his gaze, looked at the old man, and nodded: "Yes, sir. Your family too?"

The old man put his hands behind his back and nodded: "Our family too. First time leaving home for college; hard to tell if they've adjusted. You can't see well at night; you really need to see them in the daytime—they're all full of energy and spirit."

    It was pitch dark.

He Angxiao couldn't see anyone at all.

At that moment, the old man suddenly handed him something—binoculars.

He Angxiao took them and indeed spotted Chi Luoxi. Standing in the formation, he was talking to someone, laughing adorably, and standing tall with a spirited look.

The old man said: "Our kid doesn't let us come either, afraid classmates will laugh. I also come secretly, and every time I disguise myself so no one recognizes me."

With that, the old man took out a mask and sunglasses and put them on.

Indeed, old foxes know the tricks.

It was said that the old man's grandson was 1.8 meters tall but also weighed around 200 pounds, looking big and strong. However, because his family had protected him too well, his personality was timid and shy. The first time away from home, the old man was clearly worried, even renting a nearby apartment to stay near him and keep an eye on his studies.

He Angxiao suddenly found a kindred spirit who understood his worries: "Yeah, the one in our family is the same—soft personality, fair and noticeable looks. I'm really afraid he'll be bullied at school, or that he'll be bossed around by his roommates because he's too honest and get bullied."

The two parents, both worried sick about their children, stood outside the basketball court's chain-link fence in the dim light, as if they had found kindred souls.

On the topics of spoiling children, worrying about their adjustment to group life, and fearing they might be bullied, they quickly found a deep mutual understanding. They exchanged their concerns, one after another.

He Angxiao and the old man added each other on WeChat. They took turns keeping watch, one day each. He Angxiao told the old man about his chubby grandson's situation, and the old man shared daytime photos of Chi Luoxi with him. They worked together splendidly.

On the tenth day, however, the old man was caught. It was said he was suspected of using binoculars to peep at girls. The old man then offered his reputation from decades in the military as proof that he was just looking at his grandson, not some pervert. A misunderstanding was cleared up, but the school still thought it was inappropriate and told the old man not to do it anymore.

The old man, being a true friend, said to He Angxiao: "Xiao He, the two of us have been blacklisted by the school! Don't come anymore; you'll definitely get caught. The school is too strict; they even call the students themselves. My grandson is already angry with me."

    He Angxiao: "…………"

After over ten days, the military training finally ended.

Chi Luoxi, dragging a huge suitcase nearly as tall as him, his face a shade darker from the sun, but still in good spirits, threw himself into He Angxiao's arms who had come to pick him up.

He pulled out a certificate of merit as if offering a priceless trophy and handed it to He Angxiao.

    "Hubby! Look! I got this!"

He Angxiao took it and saw it was a certificate of honor for "Soldier King."

He Angxiao: "...Haha, babe, you're amazing. I'm so proud our little home has a Soldier King."

Chi Luoxi humbly accepted He Angxiao's praise and said: "Hubby, I'm really good at the goose-step. Our instructor even praised me. You don't know how amazing our instructor is—he can carry a heavy pack for dozens of miles."

After saying that, Chi Luoxi thought of something and said indignantly: "Hubby, you don't know—apparently a few days ago at our school, there were two creeps in disguise using binoculars to look at students. One old, one young. If I catch them, I'll show them how I can send them flying with military combat!"

    He Angxiao: "…………"
