Chapter 26: "Innocent Boy Meets Charming Nanny"

When Li Changhong proposed this, Zhang Shaoling had already warned Ying Li, so Li wasn't surprised when Ying Li declined.

He took another look at Ying Li: At twenty, he possessed the dual assets of youth and beauty.

It had been a while since Li Changhong encountered someone so genuine and pure. Ying Li sat upright with impeccable posture. Even a simple white tee seemed upscale on him. He emanated an innate charisma, making one feel an urge to approach him. In short, he had an affable appeal and was audience-friendly.

Yet, there was a depth in his eyes, uncharacteristic for his age, that cloaked him in an aura of mystery, making one eager to delve deeper into his story.

Such a face, if placed in the entertainment industry, would undoubtedly be top-tier. It'd be impossible for him not to gain popularity.

All in all, it'd be such a waste if Ying Li didn't debut.

After observing Ying Li for a while, Li Changhong persistently asked again, "Are you sure you want to pass up such a great opportunity?"

With an even graver expression, Ying Li responded, "I'm not cut out for it."

Frowning, Li Changhong remarked, "Is it because you're camera-shy and feel pressured? However, being camera-ready isn't innate. Out of ten people, maybe nine aren't used to the lens initially. Just like Qi Xie and the others, they underwent training before their debut."

Ying Li paused for a moment, "Being uncomfortable in front of the camera is just part of the reason. No one has ever really controlled me since childhood; I'm used to freedom. The entertainment industry has too many restrictions and rules, which I might find hard to adapt to. And honestly, fame isn't that important to me."

Li Changhong sighed and continued, "You're someone with both talent and good looks. If you post something on social media now, you'd easily get tens of thousands of comments. You've seen it yourself; there are many requesting you to appear on a variety show with Number."

Becoming a sensation in this industry is unpredictable. Most are like pebbles thrown into the sea, making no splash. Some spend a decade without any fame. Then there are those with the potential, with the right backing, to rise to fame. Yet, a few are just naturally destined for stardom; they just need the spotlight.

Ying Li is certainly of the latter type. He's immensely popular without even revealing his full potential.

The entertainment industry is never short of beautiful faces, and most exploit their looks for shortcuts. But Ying Li is the first one I've seen who remains so modest.

Li Changhong said, "Of course, debuting isn't simple. There's training and all. For now, just join this group show, make an appearance, and build on your current momentum. If you want to wear a mask, that's fine. I'll offer you three times the usual compensation for newcomers."

Just as Ying Li was about to speak, Li Changhong interrupted, "You don't need to give me an answer right away. Take your time, weigh the pros and cons. Whatever your decision, I'll respect it."

With Li Changhong being so considerate, Ying Li responded politely, "I'll give it some thought. Thank you, Director Li."

After Li Changhong left, Zhang Shaoling tried persuading Ying Li to join his company. He was persistent, but Ying Li remained unswayed.

Ying Li poured Zhang Shaoling a glass of water to soothe his throat.

Zhang Shaoling glanced at him, sighed, and said, "Oh, kid..."

Ying Li's eyes sparkled with curiosity, "Mr. Zhang, did they find the person who damaged the pipa?"

"Yes, a temp from logistics, bribed by a troll. We've reported to the police. Legal procedures and compensations will follow. You don’t need to worry," Zhang Shaoling responded.

Teacher Gu Feng had surgery and was recovering in the hospital. He had given Ying Li a lot of advice during a lecture at Nan University last year. Out of respect and gratitude, Ying Li decided to visit him, accompanying Zhang Shaoling.

    At the Nancheng City Hospital.

Gu Feng's assistant beseeched, "Professor, you've watched this video many times. You just had surgery and need to rest."

Right after the incident, Gu Feng's studio had issued an apology. After his surgery, he had been watching the trending video of Ying Li playing the guitar as if it were a pipa.

He was engrossed when someone knocked on the hospital room door.

    The assistant invited, "Come in."

Zhang Shaoling, holding a fruit basket, entered, "How's your recovery, Professor Gu Feng?"

"Mr. Zhang, I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused," Gu Feng said regretfully. His eyes then landed on the figure behind Zhang, momentarily taken aback. "Ah, Yilai is here as well."

Yilai gave a subtle bow, "Master Gu Feng."

The assistant ushered them to sit and poured water for them. Meanwhile, Gu Feng, seemingly recovering well, discussed with Zhang Shaoling about the follow-up handling of the recent incident.

Yilai sat quietly on the side, intently listening. Suddenly, Gu Feng turned to him, asking, "Young man, how did you come up with the idea of playing the guitar like a pipa?"

He had watched that video multiple times. The techniques for pipa and guitar are distinct, yet Yilai seamlessly blended them. It was evident he had devoted much effort into mastering it.

Typically, those studying music come from affluent backgrounds. However, he had heard from the department head that Yilai's family faced financial hardships, making his journey in music all the more challenging.

Yilai could only answer truthfully, revealing that one day, he had a sudden inspiration recognizing the similarities between the two instruments.

"Adapting and innovating paves the path to greatness," admiration was evident in Gu Feng's eyes as he squinted, "What are your plans after graduation? Interested in joining our studio? We're in need of talents like you."

Zhang Shaoling's eyes twitched, thinking, "Is he trying to poach him now?"

Gu Feng's music studio had a significant reputation in the industry, producing numerous hit songs and collaborating with many renowned artists. The studio offered vast resources and connections, and the allure of working behind the scenes without facing the public was undeniably tempting to Yilai.

However, Zhang Shaoling kept making conspicuous facial expressions at Yilai, leading Yilai to naively ask, "Mr. Zhang, are your eyes bothering you?"

A twitch appeared at the corner of Zhang Shaoling's mouth as he responded with a playful grin, "You're still far from graduation. And remember, your internship contract specifies no dual contracts."

Indeed, the contract had such a clause. Eventually, Yilai had no choice but to politely decline the opportunity. Gu Feng wasn't insistent, suggesting that they could discuss again once Yilai's internship was over.

Upon returning from the hospital and seeing that the others were still asleep even though it was nearly noon, Yilai immediately started preparing lunch.

"Cooking?" Shen Yao descended from upstairs, heading straight to the kitchen.

Yilai replied, "Yes, I forgot to buy groceries when I came back earlier. Would you mind a simpler meal for lunch?"

"Of course not, whatever you cook is delicious," Shen Yao rolled up his sleeves and approached the sink, "Let me help you out."

Yilai quickly interjected, "There's no need. I'm your housekeeper; it's my duty. I can't just earn my wages without working."

"I'm just helping with the washing. It's not a big deal," Shen Yao swiftly grabbed a cabbage and began to rinse it.

Yilai sighed with a hint of helplessness, "Alright, but once you're done washing, let me handle the rest."

Shen Yao chuckled, "Actually, I quite enjoy cooking. It feels so... grounded in life's simple pleasures."

In the past, he fantasized about sharing his life with a loved one, delighting in the everyday routine of cooking three meals together. The thought of such a tranquil yet fulfilling life was heartwarmingly beautiful.

Yilai was slicing vegetables, deeply engrossed in his task. Sometimes he'd hum a tune, probably unaware of his own melodious distraction.

The performance Yilai gave the previous night left an indelible impression on Shen Yao. He had always thought of Yilai as a pretty face, but when it came to his craft, Yilai transformed, exuding an intense aura on stage.

And now, watching Yilai preparing soup, his demeanor was gentle and non-threatening. Shen Yao found this juxtaposition quite intriguing.

As Shen Yao gently tore the cabbage leaves and washed them, he felt unusually patient. Being around Yilai immersed him in a soothing and relaxing atmosphere.

He wished Yilai were a woman. If that were the case, he'd have pursued her relentlessly, never tiring of their constant companionship.

They could cook together, and perhaps even share more intimate moments in the kitchen...

Just like in those risqué films: a pristine setting with people bustling about, the ever-present danger of being discovered. The forbidden allure of such fantasies left him feeling a tad flushed.

As Yilai washed the green onions, Shen Yao couldn't help but admire his delicate, pale fingers, seemingly softer than the very onion stems they held.

Yilai eyed the frayed cabbage floating in the water and commented with pursed lips, "Any more tearing, and it'll be inedible."

Glancing down and realizing he had overworked the cabbage, Shen Yao replied with a hint of embarrassment, "I'll eat it."

Determined to salvage the cabbage, Yilai offered, "Let me handle it."

As Yilai reached for the water-soaked cabbage, Shen Yao suddenly grasped his hand, asking, "What happened to your fingers?"

"Hmm?" Yilai looked down, noticing the reddened skin and scratches. He furrowed his brows, "Might be from playing the instrument last night. It's been a while since I last played."

Holding Yilai's hand, Shen Yao's voice was rough with concern, "Does it hurt?"

With a nonchalant shrug, Yilai replied, "Not at all."

He often got minor injuries when practicing in the past; such small wounds were familiar territory for him.

Shen Yao's gaze lingered on Yilai's fingers, emotions swirling in his eyes.

"Really, it doesn't hurt." Yilai withdrew his hand and continued rescuing the cabbage. "The others should be waking up soon. We should get cooking."

Although Shen Yao had promised not to interfere in the kitchen once he finished washing the cabbage, he ended up peeling garlic and assisting throughout. He barely left the kitchen by the time dinner was almost ready.

As they were cooking the last dish, Shen Yao inquired, "Do you have any plans today?"

Ying Li contemplated, "I need to head back to school this afternoon for a group meeting to update on my research paper's progress."

Shen Yao: "When does it end?"

Ying Li: "Around four or five o'clock, I suppose. Why?"

"Didn’t you mention wanting to visit a bar? I’m free tonight." Shen Yao handed him a plate, "Interested?"

    Ying Li nodded, "Sure."

It seemed Xie Wen Shi was hungry, as he somehow found a packet of snacks and came crunching his way into the kitchen. Hearing about the bar plans, he immediately expressed interest, "You're heading to a bar? Include me, I want to join."

Shen Yao shot him a glare, "Why's a kid like you trying to join the fun?"

Xie Wen Shi retorted, "Kid? I'm of legal age! I could even get married in the UK."

"Hungry, huh?" Seeing him munching, Ying Li remarked, "Dinner will be ready once this dish is done."

"It smells incredible. You're so talented, Brother Li," Xie Wen Shi flattered effusively.

Shen Yao playfully pushed him away, "Move! You're in the way."

"So, are you guys taking me tonight?" Xie Wen Shi begrudgingly stepped aside, pouting, "If Brother Li goes, I'm going too."

Shen Yao, exasperated, "Why do you insist on coming?"

Xie Wen Shi: "I've never been!"

Shen Yao: "Then go by yourself."

"Why are you like this?!" Xie Wen Shi, visibly irritated, exclaimed, "Ever heard of respecting the elderly and cherishing the young?"

"What's that got to do with anything? Just because you're younger, I should cater to you?" Shen Yao gave a pointed look towards a certain part, his eyes a mix of derision.

Feeling provoked, Xie Wen Shi grabbed a green onion to retaliate, "You're the one who's small!"

Ying Li reached out again to rescue the green onion, sighing with a hint of exasperation, “Joking is one thing, but don’t play with food.”

"Did you hear? Wasting food is disgraceful." Shen Yao darted behind Ying Li as Xie Wen Shi playfully lunged at him, leaving Ying Li laughing uncontrollably.

"What’s so funny?" Approaching the kitchen doorway, Song Ji Mo already caught wind of their laughter.

Xie Wen Shi was quick to tattle, "These two are planning to hit the bar tonight!"

Song Ji Mo glanced at Shen Yao, then at Ying Li, a smirk playing on his lips, "The two of you, to a bar?"

Shen Yao straightened his ruffled clothes, raising an eyebrow in challenge, "Why not? Is there a problem?"

With a playful glint in his eyes, Song Ji Mo responded, his voice breezy, “Why not all of us go together? It’s not like we have other plans."

Shen Yao chuckled, “None of you drink. What’s the point of you going?”

He had known them for over six months and never saw them touch a drop; the corporate dinners were always his to handle. Going with them would be utterly dull.

Leaning against the door frame, Song Ji Mo commented in a relaxed tone, “We’re just concerned you might drink too much. Ying Li alone won’t be able to carry you home."

With a proud air, Shen Yao retorted, “When have you ever seen me drunk?”

Only after uttering those words did he realize he might have given too much away.

He glanced at Ying Li, who seemed oblivious. Wiping his hands with a towel, Ying Li proposed, “Shouldn’t we also ask Bian Qiao and Qi Xie if they’re interested?”

Leaving anyone out wouldn’t feel right.

Speak of the devil, Qi Xie just entered the kitchen. Without missing a beat, he asked, "Qi Xie, we're considering a night out at the bar. Coming?"

Qi Xie, sounding a tad groggy as if just woken up, nonchalantly nodded, "Mm."

Turning to Shen Yao, Ying Li inquired, "So, we all go together then?"

Shen Yao hesitated, then conceded, "...Fine."

Shen Yao was utterly disgruntled. What was initially a plan for two turned into a party of six.

After lunch, Zhang Shao Ling conveniently dropped Ying Li off. They agreed to pick him up from school around five.

He had completed the initial draft and shared it with his teacher. While the content was mostly fine, the format needed some adjustments.

It wasn’t even five o’clock, yet two unassuming black sedans were parked in front of the South City University gate.

The tinted window reflected a chiseled profile; Qi Xie observed with an indifferent demeanor as students came and went through the school entrance.

With a click, the car door opened. Bian Qiao glanced over, asking, “Where to?”

Qi Xie put on his face mask, adjusted his baseball cap, and remarked, “Feeling stifled. Need to walk a bit.”

Classes had just ended, and the path was bustling with students. Groups of them emerged from classrooms with books in tow, either discussing the day’s lessons or deliberating on dinner choices.

Beside the library lay the vast Sun-Moon Lake, shimmering under daylight – perfect for daytime photos and a romantic hotspot for couples at night.

Qi Xie strolled alongside Sun-Moon Lake. A gust of wind brought the scent of fresh grass, while the calm lake reflected the twilight hues, casting flickering silhouettes of his tall and slender form.

Opposite the gymnasium stood the grand auditorium. During last year’s school anniversary performance held there, among the many on stage, Qi Xie's gaze found Ying Li instantly.

Ying Li was led onto the stage, his eyes concealed behind a black ribbon. Prominent nose bridge, chiseled jaw, his complexion nearly radiant. Yet, his lips stood out – crimson, as if stained with blood, exuding unparalleled beauty.

Their group performed the famous suona piece, "Liang Zhu". Only when the host announced his introduction did Qi Xie learn his name: Ying Li from Music Class 1.

On the hour, the grand auditorium's ceremonial bell tolled, its

    Resonance

Echoing throughout the campus with an ancient cadence.

Five o'clock struck, and Qi Xie decided to head back. Going against the stream of people, his statuesque figure moved with grace. His exceptional presence naturally drew eyes to linger on him.

He walked briskly, his cap's brim pulled low. An unsuspecting girl accidentally bumped into him, her face turning crimson instantly.

The girl quickly apologized, "I'm sorry."

Qi Xie adjusted his cap once more, gave a slight nod, and continued on.

The girl hesitated momentarily, then mustered the courage to chase after him, "Excuse me, senior, can I add you on WeChat?"

Qi Xie lifted his eyes, their depth hinting at icy sparks, containing a whirlpool of suppressed emotions.

Their eyes met, and her heart raced faster. Instinctively, she felt he wouldn’t lack female admirers. She braced herself for rejection, but to her surprise, he recited a series of digits.

His voice was crystal clear and cold, exquisitely melodic.

Ying Li had just finished a group meeting. As he bid farewell to his professor and classmates, his phone vibrated. A friend request from a stranger awaited him.

"Hello senior, I'm the student who accidentally bumped into you earlier today. Shall we get acquainted?"

Ying Li glanced at the profile picture and username. No recollection. Assuming it was a misdirected request and given his reluctance to add strangers, he declined.

At the university entrance, a horn honked from a black sedan. That's when Ying Li spotted them.

Climbing into the passenger seat, he looked back to see Shen Yao and Xie Wen smiling at him. "Just the three of you?" he inquired.

Shen Yao leaned forward, hand resting on the passenger seat, "Qi Xie and Bian Qiao are here too. We couldn't fit, so we took two cars."

Ying Li wore glasses today, looking scholarly. Behind those lenses, his gaze was gentle yet cool. He subconsciously adjusted his glasses when smiling, looking utterly captivating.

Song Ji Mo glanced at the rearview mirror to find Shen Yao gazing longingly, much like a Husky eyeing a treat.

Tapping the steering wheel, he announced, "Fasten your seatbelts. I'm your designated driver for the evening."

"Is it okay for us to go to a bar?" Ying Li hugged his backpack, fastening his seatbelt, "Won't we be photographed?"

Bars aren't particularly esteemed in public perception. Celebrities caught frequenting such places often face image repercussions.

Shen Yao replied, "The bar we're headed to is owned by a friend. It's trustworthy."

The car sped towards Central Avenue. They were headed to a bar named Orange. With its upscale ambiance and elegant decor, it could easily be mistaken for a luxury hotel from the exterior. After a phone call from Shen Yao, they were ushered in through the VIP entrance.

A punk-styled youth stood at the lounge entrance, dressed in a leather jacket and ripped jeans, with a cigarette hanging from his lips.

    Shen Yao waved, "Shao Zhuo!"

"Damn, finally!" Shao Zhuo snuffed out his cigarette and approached with long strides. The two fist-bumped, "I was about to call and rush you."

After exchanging pleasantries, Shen Yao draped an arm around him, "Meet Shao Zhuo, my friend and the owner of this bar."

"Wow, a gathering of celebrities." Shao Zhuo's eyes sparkled as he sized up the handsome crew behind Shen Yao.

Yìng Lí greeted courteously, "Good day, Mr. Shao."

Shao Zhuo laughed heartily, "Why call me 'Mr. Shao'? Just 'Shao Zhuo' will do. Or even better, 'Brother Shao'."

Shao Zhuo was quite talkative, reminiscing with Shen Yao about their past as underground singers at a bar.

Shen Yao remarked, "If you had joined the show with me back then, you'd be a superstar by now."

"What nonsense are you talking about? Haven't you seen me dance? I'm as stiff as

    a zombie.

I don’t have your talent for being so agile even in your twenties. Enough of that," Shao Zhuo said cheerfully, "I've reserved a private room for you guys. Enjoy yourselves, and put everything on my tab. Friends of Shen Yao are friends of mine, so don’t be shy about it."

Shen Yao quipped, "I plan to make you spend a fortune today."

The private room was clean, filled with calming and stylish music, accompanied by a faint sandalwood scent. It was far from the messy environment Yìng Lí had imagined.

As they entered, Shao Zhuo suddenly stopped Shen Yao, pulling him aside, "Hey, wait. Wasn’t your group five people? Who's the guy with glasses and a backpack? I've never seen him before."

Shen Yao replied, "He's our housekeeper."

"Are you guys role-playing?" Shao Zhuo stroked his chin, his gaze a tad mischievous, "Innocent boy seduced by a maid or the allure of the maid?"

"Get lost." Shen Yao widened his eyes, kicking him in annoyance, "He's just a regular housekeeper, hired for housework. Clear out the dirty thoughts from your head."

"Dirty thoughts? That's not what you said when you asked me for something that night." Shao Zhuo lit another cigarette, taking a drag, "What did you think? Wasn't my collection amazing?"

Mention of this darkened Shen Yao's expression. He hadn't replied to Shao Zhuo's messages since that day. Thinking his videos weren't exciting enough, Shao Zhuo sent him several more—muscular Western men in intense physical bouts, occasionally cursing.

He had the misfortune of watching them, tormenting him for days: "Amazing? They sound like screeching ghosts. Absolutely awful."

Shao Zhuo leisurely blew a smoke ring, teasing, "Well, a wild boar can't appreciate gourmet food."

Shen Yao retorted, "You better save it for yourself then."

Pushing open the door to the private room, Yìng Lí was seated properly on the couch. Slim and delicate, with a backpack next to him, he resembled a student who had just finished class. Shen Yao felt as though he was leading a well-behaved student astray, a sense of guilt inexplicably arising.

The room was spacious. Yìng Lí sat on the left sofa with Xie Wen Shi. Both were engrossed in their phones. Whatever they saw made Yìng Lí smile, revealing dimples on his cheeks.

It was one thing for Xie Wen Shi to tag along excitedly, but even Bian Qiao, with his obsession for cleanliness, came to join the fun. Wearing a mask and sitting silently in a corner, and then there's Qi Xie, looking as if someone owed him a fortune, completely out of place with the others. None of them seemed able to let loose and truly enjoy themselves.

What on earth had he done wrong to end up at a bar with this group?

Frustrated, he walked over and snatched the phone from Xie Wen Shi's hand. "What are you looking at? Let me see."

Xie Wen Shi reached to get it back, "What are you doing?"

Raising the phone high, Shen Yao smirked, "What's on here that I shouldn’t see?"

Ying Li chuckled, "Just watching a show you guys did previously."

Shen Yao glanced at the screen, which displayed an episode where they were tested on reaction time. He was soaked, with his pants sticking tightly, revealing every contour. The ongoing comments mentioned "bulges" and "eggplants" - it was downright scandalous.

Not sure how much Ying Li had seen, Shen Yao's face turned crimson. He shut off the phone, mumbling, "There's nothing interesting about this. It's just silly."

A uniformed waiter entered to take their order.

Shen Yao tapped on the menu, "What will you all have?"

Song Ji Mo abstains from alcohol, and Bian Qiao is allergic to it. They would definitely not drink, so Shen Yao skipped them, turning to Qi Xie, "Captain?"

"Laphroaig," he responded with a flawless British accent.

Shen Yao raised an eyebrow, appreciating the taste.

Xie Wen Shi chimed in, "I'll have a Glenlivet."

Shen Yao turned to Ying Li, "Ever had a drink before?"

    Ying Li nodded slightly, "Once."

Only that one time, during the high school graduation party. Everyone was wild that night, and he joined in the revelry. After one drink, he ended up avoiding alcohol ever since. He hadn't intended to drink tonight either.

"How about trying this cocktail?" Shen Yao pointed to an item on the menu, "It's only 3% alcohol. Mixed with some fruit juice, you won't taste the alcohol much, and it's not easy to get drunk. Even if you do, it's okay; you have nothing to do tomorrow."

Ying Li moistened his parched lips, persuaded, "Alright, I'll give it a try."

Once the order was placed, the waiter smiled at them, "Please wait a moment, gentlemen."

In a short while, the waiter brought over the prepared drinks.

Xie Wen Shi lifted his glass and leaned into Ying Li, suggesting, "Let's have a toast, Little Brother Li."

Shen Yao shot him a sideways glance, advising Ying Li, "Don't toast with him. He drinks too quickly and might get you drunk."

"Mm, I know," replied Ying Li, clinking glasses with Xie Wen Shi.

The raspberry-colored drink tasted slightly sour and sweet, with a bubbly sensation. It didn't have much of an alcoholic taste, but after just one sip, his face began to redden.

A faint blush crept from the depths of his eyes, soon spreading over his entire face, giving him the appearance of being flushed with warmth, a pink hue underlying his pale complexion. The shimmering liquid accentuated his full lips, making them even more vivid and enticing.

Several intense gazes simultaneously landed on him.

Qi Xie subtly straightened up, his hands clasped over his knees, rubbing them rhythmically.

The room felt a bit stuffy. Song Ji Mo unbuttoned a button, his gaze unwaveringly fixed on Ying Li's lips.

Perhaps it was the alcohol, but even Xie Wen Shi felt a tad warm. He'd always found Ying Li incredibly handsome with typical Eastern features. Unlike Shen Yao's ruggedness or Qi Xie's aloofness, Ying Li had a distinct, serene aura - genuine and unpretentious. Racking his brain for an apt descriptor, he came up empty.

Being the closest, Shen Yao felt as if he was surrounded by the sweet aroma of the plum wine emanating from Ying Li, subtly tantalizing his senses. "Your face is quite flushed. Does alcohol make you blush?"

"It seems so," Ying Li responded, touching his face, which felt warm, though he didn't feel particularly intoxicated.

Shen Yao's eyes lingered on his face for a moment before returning to his own drink, suggesting, "Maybe drink more slowly, then."

    Ying Li nodded, "Alright."

Everyone sipped their drinks in quiet contemplation. There were no boisterous toasts or energetic dances, making the bar experience quite different from what Ying Li had envisioned. After a while, he inquired, "When are we heading back?"

Song Ji Mo looked over, "Ready to leave?"

Ying Li shook his head, "Not really, just wondering."

"Finding it dull?" Song Ji Mo appeared to read his thoughts, "Not what you were expecting?"

    Ying Li admitted, "A bit."

On the side, Xie Wen Shi blurted out, "It's quite boring here..."

Shen Yao ignored him and asked Ying Li, "There's a dance floor below, quite lively. Want to go?"

Song Ji Mo remarked, "Want to make tomorrow's headlines?"

That was a fair point. Getting caught could lead to all sorts of news stories. Standing up, Shen Yao said, "Let's see what games we have here."

VIP rooms usually had some party props. He opened a cabinet and indeed found a small box with dice, asking everyone, "Know how to play dice?"

Xie Wen Shi enthusiastically raised his hand, "I know this one!"

"I'm decent at it too," Song Ji Mo lifted his chin slightly, "How do we play?"

Shen Yao explained, "Usually it's about getting the highest or lowest number."

Song Ji Mo nodded, "Sounds good. If there are winners, there should be losers, and there must be consequences, right?"

"There's also a 'Truth or Dare' booklet here," Shen Yao flipped through it, suggesting, "How about this: the person with the highest roll gets to assign a truth or dare to the person with the lowest?"

Shen Yao then turned to the two in the corner, "You two joining?"

Bian Qiao, as usual, declined, "You guys go ahead."

If you're not playing, why are you here? The thought was on the tip of Shen Yao's tongue, but he swallowed it, instead asking Qi Xie, "Captain, are you in?"

Under the dim lights, Qi Xie softly responded, "Mm."

"Let me give it a shot. Five, five, six—sixteen!" Xie Wen Shi shook and unveiled the dice, exclaiming with excitement, "Oh My God! I'm on a roll today!"

Shen Yao scoffed dismissively, "Mere luck. It means nothing in the face of real skill."

Xie Wen Shi retorted defiantly, "If you're so great, show us."

Ying Li, holding his glass, quietly watched them, occasionally flashing a smile. His delicate and slightly red ears made him look both serene and endearing.

A subtle urge arose in Shen Yao's heart, prompting him to offer the dice to Ying Li, "You go first."

"Huh?" Ying Li paused, replying, "I don't know how."

Of course, Shen Yao knew Ying Li didn't understand the game. How could someone who'd never been to a bar before know how to play? Just as he was about to teach him, someone else was quicker to react.

Song Ji Mo rose from his seat, and with a stride of his long legs, he seated himself next to Ying Li, their legs almost touching.

    "Let me teach you."

Ying Li set down his cup, "Alright."

Song Ji Mo demonstrated for him, "Place the dice inside, invert it, then hold it here."

With swift precision, he lifted the dice cup to reveal three dice, astonishingly stacked vertically.

Ying Li's eyes widened, "Wow, that's impressive! I always thought such things were just TV special effects. Is there a trick to it?"

Song Ji Mo, seemingly pleased by Ying Li's astonished reaction, chuckled, "There's a technique, and it's quite simple. When you shake the dice cup, try to make the dice slide against the bottom. The closer to the bottom, the larger the centrifugal force. When two dice are side by side, they're unstable, but when aligned vertically, they remain stable. That's how they stand up."

Song Ji Mo was a dice master, which made Shen Yao suddenly anxious, "Impressive, Professor Song, but our game is about the points, not stacking dice."

Showing off when there's no need.

Without paying him much attention, Song Ji Mo continued speaking to Ying Li in a gentle tone, "Just make sure the dice don't fall, the rest is up to your luck."

Their proximity was decreasing. Ying Li looked focused, still unsure of his next move. Song Ji Mo took the initiative to grasp his hand, leading the shake. A slight downward glance revealed a broad, pale expanse of Ying Li's neck and collarbone. Ying Li's eyelashes were long, fluttering when he smiled.

Their hands intertwined, and with Song Ji Mo's other arm resting beside Ying Li, it almost looked like he was encircling Ying Li within his embrace.

Shen Yao narrowed his eyes, intuitively sensing Song Ji Mo's intent. Without hesitation, he patted Song Ji Mo's shoulder nonchalantly, "If you're so skilled, Professor Song, why not teach me too?"

Even though he was trying to be gentle, Shen Yao's pat was strong enough to leave a mark on Song Ji Mo's shoulder. Song Ji Mo cast him a glance, without pausing, and responded with a faint smile, "Do you really need my instruction?"

Fully immersed in the task, Ying Li shook the dice in his hand, turning to Song Ji Mo, "Is this okay?"

With a clink, the dice cup was turned upside down on the table. Song Ji Mo released his hand, "Open it."

    "Fifteen points."

Ying Li turned to look at him, his glasses reflecting a soft, fragmented light, and a light, alcohol-laden breath grazed Song Ji Mo's neck.

Song Ji Mo's heartbeat faltered for a moment, his throat tightening, "Not bad, try on your own."

Mimicking Song Ji Mo, Ying Li tried twice more: scoring thirteen points once and eleven points the next, he was indeed quite lucky.

    "Then I'll begin."

When Ying Li officially started, he exuded confidence. With a single hand on the table, he revealed his roll: a two and two ones, totaling just four points.

"I hope I'm not coming in last," Ying Li said, scratching his head awkwardly, looking a bit frustrated.

Shen Yao couldn't help but smirk, "Talk about bad luck. Now, watch me."

With fierce confidence, he rolled a seventeen, looking utterly triumphant. After all, few could best him in this game, given his history in such settings.

Shen Yao glanced around, "Who's next?"

Song Ji Mo rolled up his sleeves to his elbows, "I'll go."

Leaning back on the couch, Shen Yao looked relaxed. Unless someone could roll an eighteen, he'd be the winner, then he could rightfully pose a question to Ying Li. He was visibly elated, even though he hadn't yet formulated his question.

To his surprise, Song Ji Mo rolled an eighteen and humbly commented, "I appreciate the concession."

Shen Yao felt a sting of embarrassment. While it wasn't a shock that Song Ji Mo was skilled, what was unexpected was that Qi Xie also rolled an eighteen. These two were full of surprises.

Xie Wen Shi was in awe, "Impressive!"

Ying Li was also stunned, "You guys are amazing."

"Ying Li's at four, the lowest," Shen Yao said with a stern face, turning to Song Ji Mo and Qi Xie. "Both of you rolled eighteen. One question each?"

Qi Xie, his face emotionless, responded in a cold tone, "What'll it be?"

Ying Li pursed his lips, "Truth."

Without a second thought, Qi Xie asked, "Ever had a girlfriend?"

As soon as he spoke, all eyes turned to Ying Li. The dim and mysterious lighting illuminated their faces, and everyone wore a look of curiosity.

Shen Yao's heart began to race for reasons he couldn't quite pinpoint. Surely Ying Li, as handsome as he was, must have had many female admirers. If he had a girlfriend, he'd undoubtedly be the epitome of a devoted boyfriend.

Back in college, one of their dorm mates had a girlfriend and would brave heavy rains to bring her an umbrella or pick her up from class daily, doing everything with sheer delight.

To be honest, that was quite romantic. But the thought of Ying Li possibly doing such things for a girlfriend made Shen Yao feel uneasy.

Qi Xie's gaze was intensely fixed on Ying Li's lips, his eyes shadowed.

Song Ji Mo absentmindedly fiddled with the dice on the table.

Ying Li licked his lips and honestly shook his head, saying, "No."

A weight lifted off Shen Yao's chest.

Qi Xie's expression lightened a tad, "Never been in a relationship?"

Shen Yao tapped the table, "Isn't that a redundant question? If he hasn't had a girlfriend, it means he's never been in love. Or are you suggesting he might have had a boyfriend?"

    A boyfriend?

That doesn't seem too out of the question.

Perhaps it was Shen Yao's presumptions that defined Ying Li's orientation. What if Ying Li was indeed interested in men?

The atmosphere in the private room grew peculiar, everyone lost in their thoughts.

Ying Li seemed unfazed, simply stating, "Never been in one."

Driven by curiosity, Shen Yao asked the question on everyone's mind, "Why not?"

Ying Li smiled, "I was focused on my studies, no time for relationships."

During school, many girls had confessed to him, but he wasn’t interested. In terms of relationships, he was a blank slate.

Shen Yao also chuckled, "That's good..."

Better that he hasn't been in one.

Qi Xie leaned back into the sofa, his lips pursed and silent, but visibly in a better mood.

"Is it my turn to ask now?" Song Ji Mo tilted his head, "Another truth?"

Ying Li caught a faint whiff of a woody herbal scent from him and nodded, "Yes, truth."

The corners of Song Ji Mo's mouth curled up, his eyes twinkling with amusement, exuding his usual warmth. Yet the question he posed was unexpectedly provocative.

"When was the last time you self-harmed?"

I think they meant “masturbated” instead of “self-harmed” here cuz that’d be a wild assumption
