Chapter 16
byChapter 16
A gentle breeze whispered through the lattice windows, creating a soft rustling sound.
The pearl and silver earring brushed against her earlobe, causing a tingling sensation. Xu Yunqi gently touched it, her gaze falling upon the waistband. She gracefully approached him, took it from his hand, and began to tie his robe for him.
Her expression was serene and gentle, and her movements were neither too light nor too heavy. It seemed as if this was how things had always been between them, as if they were an ordinary couple living their everyday lives.
It was the first time she had been so close to him, and she realized that he was exceptionally tall, slender yet sturdy, with broad shoulders and a narrow waist. The sense of intimidation was overwhelming, as if he could effortlessly envelop her entirely. Yet, Xu Yunqi remained composed, gradually adjusting his belt with deliberation.
She had never tied one before, so her actions lacked finesse.
Pei Muheng seemed oblivious, his arms slightly extended as he watched her attempt it calmly. The dim light played gently across her body. Today, she had styled her hair in a Flowing Cloud Bun, her lustrous black tresses accentuating her fair, snow-like complexion. Her expression was indiscernible, but her thick, long lashes fluttered softly, her delicate and well-defined nose bridge adding charm to her face. A pale pink blush covered her cheeks, lending a touch of allure and tenderness.
A peculiar silence hung in the palace chamber, as if an invisible undercurrent was simmering silently.
Understanding his intention, Xu Yunqi didn't persist with the belt, tying it loosely before letting go.
Looking at her awkwardness, a faint smile tugged at Pei Muheng's lips.
The slightest movement did not escape Xu Yunqi's notice.
She lifted her gaze to look at him, taking in his chiseled features and refined, handsome countenance that held an underlying sharpness.
When Pei Muheng's gaze swept over, Xu Yunqi lowered her eyes once more.
Xu Yunqi followed her usual routine by rinsing her mouth first. Meanwhile, Pei Muheng entered the canopy bed by lifting the curtains.
She cast a sideways glance towards the direction of the canopy bed before strolling into the bathroom. Ginkgo fetched a basin of warm water for her. Standing before a rack, Xu Yunqi methodically brushed her teeth with a woolen brush and then washed her hands and face. She instructed Ginkgo,
"Call for Mother Chen to attend to me and have her prepare hot water."
Ginkgo was puzzled but didn't press for details. As Xu Yunqi turned to enter the inner chamber, Ginkgo could only carry out her request.
Ginkgo carried the copper basin through the corridor, heading for the back room. Following Xu Yunqi's instructions, she informed Mother Chen who was currently arranging for the next day's breakfast. Upon hearing this, Mother Chen understood the unspoken message and promptly replied, "You must be tired today. Rest now. I'll stay up tonight to keep watch."
Without giving it much thought, Ginkgo yawned and made her way to her own quarters.
The inner chamber was spacious, illuminated by three palace lanterns. Though not overly bright, the light was adequate for them to see each other clearly.
Xu Yunqi believed they had no need for it.
Prompted by the old madam's inquiries about an heir earlier that day, Pei Muheng intended to consummate their marriage tonight; his intentions were clear.
Blowing out the lamp, Xu Yunqi stood still for a moment to adjust to the darkness before slowly making her way towards the canopy bed.
The delicate tassels of the beaded curtain brushed against each other, creating a soft, sharp sound that pierced through the silence of the inner chamber.
As Xu Yunqi stepped up onto the dais, she remembered something and asked Pei Muheng, "Third Master, would you like some tea?"
Her voice was soft and gentle, always evoking a sense of tenderness in others.
"I've already had some," Pei Muheng replied warmly.
Xu Yunqi set the curtains aside, plunging the canopy bed into complete darkness.
Ascending onto the bed, she instinctively reached for the thin quilt but suddenly touched a wrist instead.
Xu Yunqi froze, quickly releasing her grip. She was certain she had placed the bedding right here, yet it had been displaced by him.
A residual warmth and itch still lingered on Pei Muheng's wrist as he softly said, "Sleep."
In the mountainous April nights, a hint of dampness lingered in the air. Xu Yunqi was accustomed to placing a thin quilt over her chest. Without it, she couldn't sleep comfortably.
The moment her slender figure reclined, a broad hand covered her.
Xu Yunqi tensed for an instant before gradually relaxing.
She had long prepared herself for this. It wasn't unfamiliar to her. Since she was a teenager, she had read medical books that mentioned the conjugal duties of married couples. Back then, curiosity had outweighed everything else. Later, when she accompanied her maternal grandfather on his medical consultations, she witnessed naive young maidens blindly giving themselves away, only to face irreversible consequences. Her curiosity vanished.
After that, she even helped treat patients with such issues.
Conjugal duties were a natural part of life, like drinking water or seeking pleasure in food and sex.
Xu Yunqi faced the situation openly and cooperatively.
As a member of the nobility, Pei Muheng understood the significance of being the eldest legitimate son. If not for his obsession with cleanliness and the need for time to adapt, their wedding night wouldn't have been delayed until now.
Gently embracing her slender waist, he gazed at her serene and compliant face. His actions were unhurried. He was a man who never easily revealed his true self. Instead, he revealed a sense of ease through gradual progress.
Upon an unfamiliar bed, amidst uncharted collisions, there was friction with strength and the mingling of scents.
Without a single word exchanged, their synchronization was impeccable, and they both possessed remarkable composure.
Xu Yunqi's slender fingers clung tightly to the edge of the bed, her gaze drifting towards the curtain beyond.
Suddenly, she found herself locking eyes with his dark, intense stare, causing her to freeze momentarily. Upon realizing their connection, she swiftly averted her gaze, taking a deep breath.
Slowly, she advanced, warmth spreading from her neck to the tips of her ears. Her porcelain-white teeth gently nibbled, making not a single sound.
In that moment, his gaze was serene, almost tranquil, concealing his true emotions at all times. She, too, suppressed her instinct, preserving the tranquility between them.
Like molten lava, a fiery current raged silently, their breaths intertwining in the enclosed space, yet strangely maintaining a delicate equilibrium.
Neither looked at the other, nor did either yield.
Outside the window, fireworks reached their climax, the exuberant cheers of young maidens echoed in the air, cleverly masking the escalating tension within the chamber.
As it concluded, the clamor in the imperial retreat gradually subsided. Drunken officials, in twos and threes, could be heard faintly engaging in boisterous revelry.
Xu Yunqi leaned against the corner, holding her damp clothes close as she gently wiped the fine beads of sweat from her cheeks.
Pei Muheng sat opposite her, draping his dark outer robe over her, concealing his well-built physique. His profound and melancholic gaze swept across his wife. Yunqi's eyes were lowered, her small face flushed from the heat, with damp strands of hair sticking to her forehead. She appeared weak and drained.
"You've worked hard," he said, his voice smoothed by the intensity of emotion, sounding gravelly and muted.
Xu Yunqi mumbled in response, her voice barely audible. She shook her head and after a moment's struggle, managed to whisper, "I'm alright..."
Pei Muheng watched her silently for a while, then without further comment, lifted the curtain and headed towards the bathroom.
Upon his departure, the evening breeze took the opportunity to seep in, cooling her flushed cheeks. Xu Yunqi exhaled slowly and, through the faint light filtering in from outside, examined her own hands.
He usually appeared gentle and refined, never losing his temper with her or raising his voice. She had assumed he was a noble gentleman in such matters; indeed, he had been accommodating and restrained. However, in that last overwhelming surge, he abruptly pushed forward, pinning her slender arms with both hands, his fingertips methodically smoothing out the goosebumps on her skin. Finally, he clasped her wrists, leaving her immobile. In that moment, she nearly couldn't catch her breath.
Hearing the sound of water from the bathroom, Xu Yunqi gingerly shifted off the bed. Aching sensations flooded her body, and she leaned on the pillar of her four-poster bed for support, taking a while to regain her balance.
The bathroom in the western annex was opulent and spacious, partitioned by a screen. Xu Yunqi wrapped herself tightly in her clothes and made her way over. Chen Momo was already waiting behind the screen, and upon seeing her delicate frame sway slightly, promptly came forward to assist her.
Pei Muheng was just next door, so the servant and her mistress dared not make any noise.
Xu Yunqi stepped into the bathtub with great effort, and Chen Momo carefully examined her back. It was as white as jade, slightly flushed from sweat, but without any noticeable marks. She felt relieved.
Indeed, Third Master was an otherworldly figure and wouldn't do anything out of line.
After a while, the couple tidied themselves up and returned to the inner chamber together.
Chen Momo personally lit the lamps and tended to the canopy bed. Pei Musheng and Xu Yunqi sat on opposite sides of the table. As he sipped his tea, Pei Musheng took the initiative to pour a cup for his wife.
Xu Yunqi, with parched lips, accepted it and whispered, "Thank you..."
Pei Musheng recalled her previous appearance, with damp sweat covering her delicate face like a flower drenched in rain, yet she still refused to break her silence.
His wife was more composed than he had imagined.
Just then, Chen Momo emerged with bedding, a fleeting glimpse of sticky crimson revealing the reality of the situation. Xu Yunqi's face flushed for a moment, and she gripped the teacup tightly, lowering her head to drink.
Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed the man sitting across from her, unwavering and poised, like an unyielding mountain.
In a moment, Chen Momo finished her task and bowed towards the couple. Xu Yunqi understood that everything was in order and, lifting her skirt, she led the way to the canopy bed.
The lamp flickered and was extinguished as each wrapped themselves in their own blankets, sleeping soundly without a word.
As dawn's light crept in, Pei Muheng awoke as usual, his body thirsting like an awakened beast, sending subtle signals. He turned his gaze to his wife, Xu Yunqi, whose delicate face leaned towards him. Her disheveled hair cascaded over the pillow, her cheeks still flushed with a rosy hue that the nascent sun tinged with a vivid glow. A willowy arm, half-exposed from under the covers, rested on her chest.
Knowing excessive indulgence harmed the body, Pei Muheng always exercised self-restraint. Without a second thought, he suppressed his desires. Gazing at his sleeping spouse, he truly acknowledged for the first time that he was now married.
After a moment of silence, Pei Muheng tucked the corner of the blanket under his wife's chin before silently leaving the bed.
They had never shared a bed before, so Xu Yunqi had no habit of attending to him in the morning, and Pei Muheng never summoned her.
As usual, upon waking, Pei Muheng vanished without a trace.
Xu Yunqi rubbed her sore arm, staring at the unfamiliar bed. Fleeting, sensuous moments flashed through her mind. After a brief moment of astonishment, she showed no extra emotions, instead summoning a maid to help her wash up and change clothes.
Yesterday, the envoy had arrived at the palace. To dampen their confidence, the emperor did not immediately receive them but instructed Prince Qin to host a banquet in their honor. This morning, the Great Uyghur envoy officially paid respects to the emperor. Pei Muheng, along with other royal grandchildren and scholars, gathered in the Qiankun Hall.
The third prince of Great Uyghur presented three prized horses, a colossal 'longevity' jade mountain carved from Hetian jade, and several trunks filled with gold and silver treasures from the Western Regions to celebrate the emperor's birthday. Then, the two nations exchanged diplomatic documents.
Holding the Great Uyghur embassy's letter, the emperor made no immediate response but simply told them to rest.
After a hasty lunch of rice porridge, the emperor frowned at the diplomatic letter and summoned several key ministers for consultation.
The letter first landed in Prince Qin's hands. He examined it closely before shaking his head.
"They have such audacity, demanding 100,000 bales of raw silk, 100,000 chests of tea, and medicinal herbs on top of that. It's preposterous! Are they seeking peace or are we?"
Wen Duke chuckled beside them, his tone tinged with resignation. "Although we've dealt them a severe blow, they know we're running out of steam. That's why they dare to make such demands."
Prince Qin's face turned grim. "This letter must be returned for revision. If they want negotiations, they must show sincerity."
Yan Ping asked Wen Duke, "What conditions have they set?"
As the commander-in-chief of the northern campaign, Wen Duke was responsible for overseeing the peace talks. He replied, "30,000 warhorses, 50,000 furs, and some musk and medicinal herbs. They also propose establishing a trading post north of Xuanfu in Great Jin territory."
Given the different geographical landscapes of the two countries, the exchange of medicinal herbs was justifiable as both lacked what the other needed. However, warhorses and furs were different matters. Furs could be used for armor production, while warhorses were desperately needed by Great Jin. The imperial court was not satisfied with the quantities offered by Dà Wù.
Prince Qin stated, "We need to up the ante. In my opinion... they must provide 100,000 horses and 150,000 furs. These two terms cannot be negotiated. Otherwise, send their envoy back."
Prince Qin was merely speaking out of anger.
Xiao Yu inquired of the Wen Duke, "If we were to follow Prince Qin's request and return their letter of state, what would Dà Wù's reaction be? Would they tear up the negotiation agreement and engage us in battle?"
After all, Xiao Yu was a scholar and not well-versed in military affairs at the border.
The Wen Duke exchanged a glance with the emperor but did not immediately respond.
Currently, Dà Wù still possessed military strength while Dà Jìn did not. If a war were to break out, it was uncertain who would suffer the greater loss.
Pei Muheng observed the Wen Duke's expression and deduced something. He chuckled softly, "Since Dà Wù still has its military might, has the Duke considered why they have proposed this negotiation? Is it truly just due to fear of Dà Jìn's power?"
The emperor looked at his grandson, "Heng'er, did you gain any insights from receiving the Dà Wù envoys?"
Pei Muheng bowed, "In response to my imperial grandfather, the other night, I pretended to be drunk and overheard by chance that the Qiqihar River, which lies north of Dà Wù, has unexpectedly dried up. It is likely that a drought has already occurred within Dà Wù's borders."
The emperor was startled,
"So that's the case!" Prince Qin clapped his hands in amusement. "Given this situation, our stance must be firm. We must force them to agree to our terms and provide us with 100,000 horses for warfare."
Yet, things were not that straightforward.
Upon the return of Prince Qin's letter, the third prince of Dawa seemed to have anticipated this and made a proposition.
"Your Majesty's longevity celebration is imminent. Why don't our two nations engage in a martial contest for some entertainment?"
The Great Jin Empire could not afford to appear timid, so they naturally agreed to the challenge.
However, privately, Duke Wen wore a grave expression as he advised the emperor,
"Your Majesty, this is their ploy to buy time. They aim to intimidate the Great Jin with this martial competition. It seems they have come prepared for this match."
Several key officials then began to discuss strategies for arranging their forces and putting on a formidable display.
Still, the emperor's brow remained furrowed.
He dismissed everyone else, retaining only Duke Wen and Yan Ping. Eventually, under the pretext of dealing with official documents, he also asked Pei Muheng to stay.
Pei Muheng sat beside the emperor, assisting him in sorting through the documents and categorizing the memorials.
Seeing the emperor's grim expression, Duke Wen took the initiative to speak,
"Your Majesty must have realized that this grand envoy's visit is not truly for negotiation."
Shaking his head, the emperor tossed the martial arts competition proposal onto the floor.
"They didn't come to negotiate; they use the pretense of peace talks to demand from me. I cannot swallow this humiliation. Duke Wen, tell me, if war were to break out, can Great Jin withstand it?"
Duke Wen revealed a pained look and rose to bow. "Your Majesty, if push comes to shove, we naturally can fight. But it would undoubtedly bring suffering to the people."
"Their arrogance cannot go unchecked!" The emperor slammed his hand on the desk and stood up, his anger evident.
Yan Ping also stood up and pondered, "Your Majesty, regardless, we must proceed with the negotiations for now. We cannot let them dictate our actions. If they wish to compete in martial arts, we shall accompany them. However, there's no rush for further negotiations. Let them indulge in wine and pleasure at the palace, living in a drunken daze. Let us see who can remain more composed."
The emperor's expression softened upon hearing this. "That's a decent plan. Let's proceed accordingly."
Duke Wen gazed out the window at the dark night, letting out a long sigh. "But these are merely temporary solutions, after all."
In the end, the treasury was depleted, and military provisions were scarce.
The emperor's expression turned even more solemn. Suddenly, he noticed Pei Muhang meticulously sorting through documents and asked, "Heng'er, didn't you go to Yangzhou? How did your mission go?"
Both Yan Ping and the Duke of Wen turned their gazes towards Pei Muhang.
Pei Muhang rose and approached the emperor, bowing respectfully. "Emperor Grandfather, I submitted a memorial to you as soon as I returned to the camp. Did you forget to read it?"
The emperor rubbed his forehead and glanced at the imperial desk, seemingly searching for the document. Then, he seemed to recall something. "Didn't you mention reforming the salt administration?"
"Yes."
"And how do you propose to do that?"
Pei Muhang clasped his hands together and spoke seriously. "The court has long implemented the salt permit system. Merchants purchase permits from the government, retrieve salt from the salt fields, and then distribute it in designated prefectures. The government earns silver, which is stored in the national treasury and used for various state affairs."
"However, with the current shortage of military provisions and inadequate transportation, I have thought of a solution."
"What is it?" The emperor looked at him expectantly.
Pei Muhang replied, "Open the middle!"
Wen Duke exchanged a cryptic glance with Yan Ping, both perplexed.
Pei Muhang explained, "Merchants would transport grains to designated frontier forts and receive salt certificates in return. With these certificates, they could redeem salt at the salt fields and then distribute it further. This way, the court would be relieved of the burden of transporting grains, while the borders would be strengthened, greatly alleviating the problem of insufficient military rations."
The hall fell silent abruptly.
The sky in the mountains darkened swiftly, and soon twilight descended. The Chief Eunuch lit a palace lantern gently.
The emperor stared blankly at Pei Muhang, pondering his words several times before grasping their essence. His thin, bony arm rose, seeking support but finding none for a moment. Yan Ping, who was closest, noticed this and reached out. The emperor gripped his palm tightly, finally finding leverage. With suppressed excitement in his eyes, he exclaimed, "Brilliant!"
Yan Ping was equally exhilarated, genuinely praising, "Truly brilliant! This would increase efficiency and alleviate the hardships of the court purchasing and distributing grains. Third Young Master's wisdom is unparalleled and rare in this world."
Wen Duke also slapped the table in admiration, "Your Majesty, send Third Young Master to the Ministry of War quickly. With him there, I would have no worries leading troops into battle."
The emperor's face lit up with pride, "Hahaha."
After a bout of joy, memories of the troublesome Great Uyghur embassy dampened his mood, and he sighed, "But a distant water cannot quench a nearby thirst."
Pei Muheng anticipated the emperor's response and chuckled. "So, Your Majesty, I have a second strategy."
"Oh? Please share it quickly!"
Wen Duke and Yan Ping supported the emperor as they sat behind the desk, all three of them looking expectantly at Pei Muheng.
Pei Muheng continued, "Your Majesty must be aware that our Great Jin has long had trade relations with Mongol. These merchants, following the quotas set by the court, annually transport silk, tea, and such to the Mongols. However, as you know, the quantities set by the court are far from sufficient for their needs. Thus, these merchants secretly smuggle additional silk, tea, and salt to the Mongols through various methods, selling them at high prices for profit."
"So what do you suggest?"
"Well, my suggestion is that Your Majesty issue an order to send someone to the Bridgehead Fort Customs Bureau to retrieve trading records from the past five years. With this, we can compile a list of merchants and accuse them of colluding with foreign enemies. By doing so, we would cut off the supply chain to the Mongols, putting us in control of negotiations. Furthermore, seizing their assets will enrich the national treasury, preparing us for military provisions."
Upon hearing this plan, the emperor took a deep breath.
Wen Duke clapped his hands in approval beside him, "A brilliant scheme, excellent execution. Truly, you are the emperor's worthy grandson."
Yan Ping also found the proposal compelling and, after some thought, added, "Your Majesty, if an investigation is to be conducted, I can offer a direction to start."
"Oh?"
"While I was observing the administration in the Ministry of Revenue, I recall that there were numerous merchants in the Jizhou region who specialized in trading with the Great Yuan. They not only exchanged silk, salt, and tea for profit, but also secretly smuggled gunpowder into the Great Yuan."
Jinzhou is renowned for its abundance of coal, firewood, and saltpeter, from which the vast majority of the Great Jin's gunpowder is derived.
Upon hearing this, Pei Muhang cast a subtle glance at Yan Ping.
Prince Qin's secret activities were not unknown to Pei Muheng. At this moment, the Chief Minister skillfully directed the emperor's attention towards Jinzhou, doing so subtly and ingeniously.
Thus, if the crown prince's schemes were ever exposed, he would be implicated as well. Truly, the prime minister was a master at leveraging power to his advantage.
The emperor nodded. "With a direction in mind, the investigation will be more manageable. However, the question remains... who should undertake this task?"
Pei Muheng promptly bowed. "Your Majesty, I have a candidate in mind."
"Ah, do tell," the emperor prompted.
Pei Muheng smiled at Yan Ping and softly uttered three words, "Yan Shaoling."
Yan Ping was slightly taken aback.
The emperor stroked his chin in contemplation. "Yan Shaoling?"
Wen Duke chimed in from the side, "Your Majesty, Young Master Shaoling has always been a bit headstrong. He would be the perfect choice for investigating the merchants in Jinzhou."
The emperor burst into laughter. "Indeed, it's been a long time since I've seen that boy. Has he grown thicker skin?"
Yan Ping's face was filled with a wry smile. "What headstrong? He merely has a bit of a rogue's charm. Assigning him this task might be good for him, but I'm afraid he might not live up to Your Majesty's expectations."
The emperor, relieved of his concerns, leaned comfortably against his backrest and smiled at Yan Ping. "We're all getting old; it's time to let the young ones gain some experience."
In response to the emperor's profound smile, Yan Ping narrowed his eyes slowly, bowed, and said,
"Then this humble servant will express gratitude on behalf of that good-for-nothing youth for His Majesty's great favor."
*
That night, Pei Mushan didn't return until late. The following day, soldiers from both countries were set to compete in martial arts, and Pei Mushan left early in the morning, leaving the couple without a chance to meet.
Pei Mushan left for the Training Ground first, instructing Xu Yunqi to find her later. After finishing his breakfast, Xu Yunqi hurried to the Training Ground.
The Empress of Xi was nowhere to be seen. Lady Li and Pei Mushan were enjoying the commotion under a brocaded pavilion with their two children. When Fourth Miss Pei Mushan spotted Xu Yunqi approaching, she kindly made space for her to sit between them.
In an instant, Xu Yunqi noticed Pei Mushan clad in a vibrant red tunic, enthusiastically cheering in front of the martial arts arena.
"Hit him! Aim for his armpit, yes! Just like that!"
"Oh, wait, hey, hey, if you're going to hit someone, don't hit their face. Such a handsome face, oh my..." Pei Mushan covered her forehead, sighing dramatically.
Lady Li held her son, laughing so hard that she could barely catch her breath.
Unaware of the situation, Xu Yunqi inquired, "What has happened?"
In the very center of the martial arts arena stood a youth clad in Hu attire, forcibly pinned to the ground by a towering, robust man of Great Jin. The imposing man was garbed in a dazzling brocade robe, his brows sharp as scabbards, exuding an aura of boundless vigor. At a glance, it was clear he was no ordinary mortal. All the court officials and their spouses present were cheering him on, yet amidst the applause, it was only Pei Mushan who let out a sigh of regret.
Observing Lady Li's laughter turn into a fit, Pei Mulan took the opportunity to continue the tale. "Just now, a young prince from the Great Wuhua embassy arrived. He had a pair of captivating amber-blue eyes that left me mesmerized. I couldn't help but cheer for him. Seeing this, the young master of the Yan Marquis House, Yan Shaoling, offered to engage in a friendly match with him. Well, as you might have guessed, Young Master Shaoling emerged victorious, leaving the young prince on the ground. Sister here is rather regretful about the outcome for his handsome face."
Xu Yunqi found the situation both amusing and exasperating.
Pei Mushan's inclination to judge by appearances.
Pei Mulan whispered into Yunqi's ear,
"The young master of the Yan family has taken a liking to Fifth Sister."
So that was the case.
Xu Yunqi now examined Yan Shaoling more closely. The young man appeared to be in his early twenties, exuding an air of composure and arrogance. His bold and unrestrained expression revealed him to be one of those noble-born youths who rode high on their horses through the streets of the capital city.
"And what about you?" Xu Yunqi asked.
Pei Mulan giggled softly. "Fifth Sister found him less attractive than Third Brother and rejected the Yan family's marriage proposal."
Xu Yunqi: "..."
Yan Shaoling was undeniably handsome, yet Pei Mulan's rejection had dealt a severe blow to her sister.
Halfway through the martial arts competition, the third prince of Da Wu had defeated three brave generals of Da Jin, putting the situation in a precarious state. The emperor asked who dared to challenge the prince. Eventually, the prince requested a match with the twelfth prince, Pei Xun. Both were legitimate princes with reputations preceding them. The third prince wished to test his mettle against Pei Xun and also to diminish the prestige of the legitimate princes of Da Jin.
Prince Pei Xun accepted the challenge.
The leisurely Prince, nearing his thirtieth year, made a dashing entrance with visible injuries.
As he leaped from the imperial steps onto his horse, the crowd outside erupted into thunderous applause.
Xu Yunqi realized that this Twelfth Prince was quite the favorite among the young ladies.
Lady Li informed her, "Sister-in-law might not know, but the Twelfth Prince is renowned as the finest archer in our great Jin Empire. His appearance guarantees no further defeats."
Pei Mulan, looking worried, interjected, "But I've heard that Uncle Twelfth has been injured,"
Lady Li didn't respond immediately. Instead, Pei Mushan, standing by the fence of the martial arts field, loudly replied,
"Even with an injury, Uncle Twelve could defeat his opponent effortlessly!"
Aside from studying medicine, Xu Yunqi had always been eager to learn archery. For a young lady, such skills would serve as a means of self-defense in the outside world. Unfortunately, her maternal grandfather wasn't proficient in it, and her attempts to learn from others proved fruitless. Hearing their praise, she became quite curious about this Twelfth Prince, just like everyone else, and craned her neck for a better look.
The two of them sat on their horses, facing the vast sky, both drawing their bows simultaneously.
As expected, Prince Twelfth Pei Xun's archery skills were as impressive as rumored – fluid and graceful, with arrows piercing the air like a bolt of lightning, soaring into the clouds. It was unclear how far they had flown when suddenly, the distant cry of a wild goose echoed. Moments later, the crowd witnessed the goose plummeting to the ground, carrying two arrows embedded in its body.
The Great Uyghur prince's arrow pierced through the bird's wing, while Pei Xun's shot shaved off a tuft of feathers from its forehead, clearly demonstrating their differing archery skills. When Pei Xun, slightly limping, was personally assisted back by Pei Muheng, the prince's expression darkened even further.
Pei Xun had fought despite his injury.
Seeing Xu Yunqi's brightening eyes, Li Shi chuckled and asked, "Do you enjoy archery?"
Xu Yunqi nodded earnestly.
Li Shi continued, "Your third brother learned his archery skills from the Twelfth Prince himself. You can ask him to teach you later." As she spoke, a hint of mischief flickered in her eyebrows.
Xu Yunqi gently smiled. Pei Muheng had no time for such leisure, nor would he have the inclination even if he did.
In reality, Li Shi was observant. From watching their interactions as a couple, she could tell they maintained a frosty respect for each other. Seeing Xu Yunqi's silence, she assumed she was upset and tried to comfort her.
"Life is about enduring day by day. Actually, you might not know how many people envy you. Last night, your second brother told me that during the first negotiation between our two countries yesterday afternoon, your third brother left the opposition speechless, giving our Great Jin a significant advantage. Did you hear about this?"
Xu Yunqi hadn't. Pei Muheng never discussed court matters with her, likely adhering to their unspoken rules. Sensing the situation, Li Shi felt sympathy and held Xu Yunqi's wrist more tightly. She leaned closer and whispered in her ear,
"Your brother mentioned that both the Prince Qin and the crown prince are trying to win over your third brother. He has an endless future ahead of him in politics. You'll need to be understanding and supportive."
Xu Yunqi found the situation both amusing and exasperating, but she gracefully accepted the gesture. "Many thanks to Second Sister, I understand your intentions."
After the twelfth prince's competition ended, the ladies dispersed in small groups.
Pei Mushan called for a few young ladies to join a polo game, while Xu Yunqi accompanied Lady Li back to the palace residence. Along the way, their children insisted on watching the water dart performance by the lake, so Lady Li asked Pei Mulan for assistance. Xu Yunqi walked alone towards the palace residence when she was suddenly stopped by someone on a wooden walkway.
Liu Xiangning, the daughter of the Minister of Justice, stood in front of Xu Yunqi with two maidservants. Her face was pale with a tinge of green, and her voice lacked strength as she accused, "Mrs. Xu... were you deliberately doing that yesterday?"
Taking a quick assessment of Liu Xiangning's appearance, Xu Yunqi replied calmly, "Miss Liu, it seems you've developed blisters from the burn. Instead of resting indoors, you rushed out to expose yourself to the wind. Your wounds might easily become infected, causing unbearable pain like ants gnawing at you day and night..."
Hearing this, Liu Xiangning's anger flared even more. The hatred in her eyes seemed ready to burst forth. "That's right, I'll make you experience the same suffering today..."
She signaled with her eyes, and immediately, a few guards emerged from the bushes on either side, surrounding Xu Yunqi and Silver Apricot with Liu Xiangning and her servants.
Xu Yunqi gave them a cold glance, gripping the silver needles in her sleeve, preparing to defend herself. Suddenly, a powerful shout echoed from a stone path beside her.
"Who dares!"
Following the sound, Xu Yunqi saw a tall, slender lady with a broad forehead and wide cheeks approaching hastily, accompanied by two maidmaids. With her skirt fluttering in the wind, she hurriedly climbed the steps and positioned herself between Xu Yunqi and Liu Xiangning, sternly addressing the latter,
"Miss Liu, your father holds the esteemed position of Chief Justice in the Board of Censors. Surely you are aware of the consequences of causing harm to others in private?"
"The tea being spilled on you was due to the Xiao family's doing, not because of Yunqi. If you persist in blaming her, you might not even know how you'll end up dead!"
Liu Xiangning cast a disdainful glance at the approaching figure, her tone laced with sarcasm. "Who are you, to dare disrupt this lady's affairs?"
The lady seemed disinclined to engage her further. "Who I am is none of your concern. If you don't leave now, I shall call for assistance!"
Upon hearing Liu Xiangning's raised voice, her anger immediately dissipated. "You... just you wait! I'll settle the score with you later!" She left in a huff, her frustration evident.
*
Amidst the howling mountain winds and the intermittent scent of pine, Xu Yunqi held a teapot, pouring a cup for Madam Jiang who sat opposite him. Both of them occupied a pavilion overlooking a cliff, silently gazing at each other.
Xu Yunqi gave a bitter smile. "I believe the Liu family is not known for their reasonableness. Why did you provoke them on my behalf? Their petty tricks can't harm me."
Madam Jiang shook her head. "Could I just stand by and watch someone lay a hand on you?"
Seeing Xu Yunqi about to argue, she gently took his wrist and said warmly, "My dear child, have you been well these past six months?"
Xu Yunqi's eyes flickered slightly, and his smile deepened. "Why wouldn't I be? No worries about food or clothing, and no burdens to bear."
Madam Jiang gazed at her moon-like eyes and suddenly choked with emotion, "How wonderful it would have been if His Majesty had not arranged this marriage..." Through her words, she buried her face in tears, her shoulders trembling.
Xu Yunqi's expression softened.
A year ago, shortly after arriving in the capital, Xu Yunqi treated an official's wife at Chengyang Medical Hall. That woman was Madam Jiang. Later, at a chance banquet, Madam Jiang recognized Xu Yunqi and learned that she was the eldest daughter of the Minister of Works, Xu Da's family. Delighted, she secretly sent a matchmaker to propose marriage.
At that time, Xu Yunqi was coveted by her elder brother Xu He and did not wish to remain in the Xu household. Thus, she agreed to meet Madam Jiang at her mother Zhang's request.
The two women found instant rapport. Since Madam Jiang's life had been saved by Xu Yunqi, she adored her deeply and hastily arranged for her to meet her only son, Jiang Yuhe. Jiang Yuhe, who already felt gratitude towards Xu Yunqi, was even more impressed when he saw her standing tall and graceful, with a quiet elegance that captivated him.
And so, the marriage was settled between the two families.
The Jiang family was a fourth-rank baronial household, slightly higher in status than the Xu family, but not significantly so. It could be considered a suitable match. With a doting mother-in-law and a gentle husband like Jiang Yuhe, it was an excellent arrangement.
Unfortunately, just as the two families exchanged betrothal gifts, the Emperor's decree arrived, cancelling the marriage plans. Madam Zhang and Madam Jiang almost wept together in despair.
Over the past six months, whenever Madam Jiang thought about this, she would bitterly regret it.
Xu Yunqi couldn't bear to see her in such pain and promptly comforted her, "Madam, it's all in the past. Our paths were not meant to cross, and there was nothing we could do about it. Now, I'm doing well, living a peaceful life. You should also let go and focus on finding a good match for Brother Jiang."
Speaking of Jiang Yuhe, Madam Jiang's sobs grew even more heartfelt, her fingers trembling with emotion. Full of thoughts she wished to share, she hesitated, considering Xu Yunqi was now married. In the end, she swallowed her words and could only weep silently.
After a while, Madam Jiang composed herself, wiped away her tears, and asked Xu Yunqi with a smile,
"How is Third Young Master treating you?"
Xu Yunqi, wanting to alleviate her concerns, quickly replied, "He treats me very well. Although he seems cold on the surface, he truly cares for me deep down. He spends generously on me and always brings expensive gifts when he returns from his travels. Our marital relationship is harmonious. As for my mother-in-law... though we don't have an exceptionally close bond, she never mistreats me. And my sister-in-law, there's even less to worry about."
Xu Yunqi's words were meant to reassure Madam Jiang and, at the same time, to discourage Jiang Yuhe's lingering hopes.
However, Madam Jiang looked at her with a pained expression, tears shimmering in her eyes.
"Yunqi, I know your character better than anyone. These words might placate your mother, but they won't convince me. Third Young Master is an honorable man, and I trust him. But when it comes to a loving marriage, I'll take your word for it."
It was one thing to endure hardships at home, but quite another to face outsiders' disdain and gossip. If she had married into the Jiang family, everyone would have cherished her like a treasure. That would truly be ideal.
Seeing that she couldn't persuade her, Xu Yunqi playfully tugged at her arm. "Are you still taking the remedy I gave you?"
"Yes, I am," Madam Jiang answered.
"By the way, how is Brother Jiang doing?"
"Do you believe me when I say he's admirable?"
As an experienced translator of Chinese and English novels, I am currently engaged in rendering an ancient Chinese palace intrigue romance novel, rich with the elements of imperial court life. Here's an elegant and contextual translation of the passage you've provided, assuming there was a passage to translate. If you could provide the actual text, I would be more than happy to offer the translation.
It was nearing the hour of the Monkey, and the sun had started its descent in the western sky; the rustling of leaves persisted in the forest.
Xu Yunqi and her maid, Yinxing, linked arms as they strolled toward the palace ahead.
The gentle breeze swept across the grassy waves, carrying them towards the imperial retreat, and Xu Yunqi observed the scene from afar with a sense of tranquility.
Ginkgo was still immersed in Lady Jiang's words, her expression downcast.
"Madame Jiang believes that the Jiang family is the perfect choice for you, Miss. She supports your medical career and knows you inside out; she will respect you deeply and never compare you to any other noble family's daughter. As for Young Master Jiang, he truly is the finest man in the world. It wasn't long after meeting him that he brought you all the delicacies from the capital city, his thoughts and gaze always on you..."
There was a moment when Ginkgo had despairingly wondered if her young miss had been forgotten by heaven. Happiness seemed to reach her fingertips only to slip away silently.
Back then, her parents were a loving couple, and now there was a suitable match with a family of equal status.
Upon hearing the young maid's words, Xu Yunqi paused in his steps. Observing the wind tousling her hair, he casually tidied it up with a broad smile on his face.
"Yinxing, whether something is good or bad cannot be summed up in a single statement. Some husbands are capable and supportive, bringing honor to their wives, while others may be loving and caring at home but falter when faced with challenges outside. One cannot have it all. Everything has its pros and cons. Once something happens, there's no point dwelling on whether it was good or bad. Our task is to accept it. People should not be trapped in the past nor worry about an uncertain future."
"Live in the present."

Despite the Twelfth Prince's victory in the martial contest between the two nations, the display of prowess by the Great Uyghur soldiers left the Jin court astounded. At the negotiation table, the Uyghur delegation remained steadfast in their stance. Following Yan Ping's strategy, the emperor cold-shouldered them, assigning Prince Qin, Prince Chen, and the Twelfth Prince to entertain the envoys in turns, without showing his own face.
Pei Muheng was incredibly efficient, managing to retrieve documents from the bridgehead bureau within a day. As expected, most of the merchants mentioned were indeed from Jizhou. Thus, Yan Shaoling was dispatched overnight to investigate the case in the southern Jizhou.
Over the next two days, everyone was rather idle.
The young ladies would pair up or gather in small groups to join their brothers on hunting expeditions. On one such day, Pei Mushan wished to invite Xu Yunqi to participate in a game of polo. Knowing that she wanted to surprise her with a custom-made rouge, Xu Yunqi declined, saying,
"I'm feeling unwell, you should go ahead."
She wanted to delight her younger sister-in-law with this unexpected gesture.
Upon hearing that Xu Yunqi was unwell, Pei Mushan immediately grew anxious. "I'll send for the Imperial Physician on your behalf then."
Xu Yunqi said helplessly, "It's nothing serious, just a short rest will do."
Pei Mushan noticed her good complexion and didn't take it to heart. "Alright then, I'll fetch more tokens for you to choose from."
Watching her leave, Xu Yunqi returned to the inner chamber and had barely settled when she heard steady footsteps outside.
It was Pei Musheng.
It was just past the first hour of the afternoon. At this time, he should be by the emperor's side or at the martial arts training ground. Had he perhaps forgotten something?
Xu Yunqi came out in surprise.
Pei Musheng strode in hastily, his expression assessing her. "Your sister mentioned you weren't feeling well?"
Xu Yunqi froze.
Just as she hesitated about acknowledging it with a nod, he spoke with a hint of ambiguity, "Did I hurt you?"
Xu Yunqi was utterly flustered. A swarm of embarrassment crept up from every corner of her body, piercing through her thin skin and blooming into a delicate flush. Last night, Pei Musheng had returned late, and she had drifted off to sleep. He had suddenly held her down and... until now, she could still feel a lingering sensation in her bones.
Pei Muheng had clearly misunderstood.
Xu Yunqi gestured towards the rouge on the table, "I wanted to make some for my younger sister, so I found an excuse to decline her offer."
She wore a tranquil and gentle expression.
Pei Muhang's profound eyes were clearly fixed on her, not moving an inch.
Xu Yunqi could only clench her embroidered handkerchief, responding calmly, "I'm really fine."
Pei Muheng softly acknowledged, casting a glance at the brilliant daylight outside before saying in a gentle voice, "Since you're alright, I'll take you for a stroll."
"Ahh..." Xu Yunqi wore an astonished expression as if such words should not have come from his mouth.
Was he really that idle?
Her husband's sudden display of tenderness caught her off guard.
Pei Muheng smiled amicably and said, "There's no urgent need for negotiations these few days. The Emperor granted me leave, and somehow, he mentioned you, saying I should accompany you. You've been here for so long without properly going out to enjoy yourself. Let me take you up the mountain."
Aside from his overpowering presence in their intimate moments, he was usually gentle and mild-mannered.
Xu Yunqi nodded, her feelings mixed.
Pei Muheng's departure that day was deliberate. The Prince Qin's scheme was about to unfold, and it was time for Pei Muheng to avoid any trouble. Xu Yunqi had been publicly reprimanded before, undoubtedly causing him distress. Taking advantage of the pleasant weather, he had brought her out for a leisurely outing, so that others would know they were a harmonious couple, debunking those rumors.
After all, she had chosen to be with him; he couldn't let her suffer any injustice.
Xu Yunqi entered the chamber to change into a practical riding outfit. When she emerged, Pei Muheng gazed at her intently.
She wore a pale apricot robe, its hem tucked into a pair of black deer leather boots, giving her a neat and agile appearance. A blue silk sash cinched her tiny waist, accentuating her slender figure and adding a touch of bold elegance.
"What's wrong?" She touched her cheeks, wondering if there was something amiss.
Pei Muheng shook his head and led her forward. "Nothing's wrong."
The couple walked ahead, followed by Silver Apricot and two covert guards. In no time, they reached the stables. A servant brought forth Pei Muheng's favored steed, "Black Hoof." He mounted the horse and held out his hand to Xu Yunqi. "I'll take you."
Xu Yunqi glanced back at the vast, endless prairie in the distance, excitement shimmering in her eyes. "Third Master, can I ride on my own?"
Pei Muheng was slightly taken aback. "You know how to ride a horse?"
Xu Yunqi smiled. "A little."
Pei Muheng dismounted and went back to the stable, selecting a gentle and short-statured mare suitable for a young lady like her.
Xu Yunqi swung herself up onto the horse and took a few steps, getting used to the motion. Then, she set off toward the front.
The imperial retreat was situated halfway up a mountain. From the riding field in front of it, one could see an expanse of fertile land stretching for miles into the distance. After a while, Xu Yunqi's pretty face flushed red from the jolts of the horse, but she never easily admitted defeat. She pulled hard on the reins, gradually taming the horse. Looking back, she saw that man sitting gracefully and casually on his steed, following leisurely behind her, exuding the elegance of a bright, clear moon.
Although she suspected that Pei Muheng's company might be due to ulterior motives, she was still delighted.
It had been a long time since she last rode for pleasure.
Xu Yunqi continued her gallop.
After another stretch, the horse passed through a forest and reached a damp area. Xu Yunqi felt weary, so she spread out a grass mat at the top of the slope and sat down to rest. Her thighs ached from the prolonged riding, so Pei Muheng, with a leisurely stride, dismounted and fetched a water bag for her to drink.
Neither of them was a talkative person, so they sat silently on the slope, enjoying the view below.
The temperature here was evidently several degrees warmer than outside. Surrounded by dense woods, the air was filled with bird songs and the sweet fragrance of flowers. At the foot of the slope, a lake steamed with geothermal heat, indicating the presence of underground hot springs.
Xu Yunqi was no stranger to various terrains. In a forest with geothermal activity, one could find all sorts of rare medicinal plants and creatures, both living and herbal.
Those familiar with the woods possessed an innate sense of alertness. Xu Yunqi, sharp-eyed, sensed something and promptly set down her water pouch. She casually brushed aside the grass hidden beneath the low shrubs, scanning her surroundings.
Pei Muheng, unsure of what she was doing, was about to inquire when a sudden streak of vivid green light flashed before his eyes, darting straight towards Xu Yunqi. His heart leapt into his throat, and instinctively, he pulled his wife behind him while his concealed soft sword flashed out at lightning speed, aiming for the green glow.
However, someone was quicker than him.
Before Pei Muheng could even discern her movements, Xu Yunqi had effortlessly caught a two-inch-long green snake in her hand.
Pei Muheng: "…"
It was an extremely rare Green-tipped Snake, small in size yet valuable for its medicinal properties. Xu Yunqi had only seen one once before, in the hands of a medicine dealer in Xiangxi. Having sensed danger earlier, she hadn't expected to stumble upon this elusive creature. Overjoyed, Xu Yunqi turned around with a smile, holding the snake, now paralyzed by her silver needle, in her hand.
Pei Muheng looked at her with an indescribable expression of shock.
His lingering fear for her safety had not faded, and now his face was tinged with a pale green hue.
Xu Yunqi met his icy gaze, her smile freezing on her face. Following his line of sight to the small snake in her hand, she belatedly realized the issue and became flustered. She wanted to explain but found herself at a loss for words. Lowering her eyes with disappointment, she eventually turned around slowly and carefully wrapped the snake in a cloth pouch she carried with her.
Pei Muhang gazed at his wife as she turned away silently, his gaze transcending her delicate shoulders to observe her every movement with acute clarity. The way she moved was practiced and faultless, a clear indication that it was an everyday occurrence for her.
Pei Muqing's Adam's apple bobbed, and he slowly swallowed the cold breath.
What kind of wife has he, in the end, taken into his arms?
It seemed he had never truly known her.
