    Chapter 69: Parting Fifteen

Autumn, the Hundred Phoenix Mountain hunting grounds.

Hundreds of cultivators gathered at a place known for frequent appearances of evil spirits and demonic beasts. Within a set time, they competed to hunt prey based on their skills. This event was known as the hunting competition. The Hundred Phoenix Mountain stretched for miles, with abundant prey, making it one of the three most famous hunting grounds, having hosted many large-scale hunts. Such grand events were not only opportunities for major and minor families to actively participate, showcase their strength, and recruit talents, but also a chance for rogue cultivators and rising stars to make a name for themselves.

In front of the Hundred Phoenix Mountain, there was a vast square surrounded by dozens of high observation platforms, bustling with excited whispers. The most serene was, naturally, the highest and most luxurious observation platform. Most of the people seated there were elderly scholars and family heads' relatives. The maids in the back either held parasols or fans, while the ladies in the front covered their faces with fans, looking down at the hunting grounds below with great reserve.

However, when the Gusu Lan Family's cavalry formation appeared, this reserve could no longer be maintained.

In night hunting, chasing prey did not actually rely on horses. However, horsemanship was one of the essential skills for scions of noble families, and in such a grand occasion, riding on horseback was not only a symbol of etiquette but also created a magnificent spectacle, quite beautiful. In essence, it was all about "rules" and "appearance." Lan Xichen and Lan Wangji sat on two snow-maned steeds, leading the Gusu Lan Family's cavalry formation forward slowly. Both had swords hanging at their waists and bows and arrows slung across their backs. Their white robes and forehead ribbons fluttered together, ethereal, as if they were celestial beings descended to earth, their snow-white boots spotless, perhaps even cleaner than others' clothes. The twin jades of the Lan family truly resembled a pair of flawless gems, carved from ice and snow. As soon as they appeared, the air seemed to become refreshing. Many female cultivators were captivated, with the more reserved ones merely lowering their fans and eagerly looking on, while the bolder ones rushed to the edge of the observation platform, throwing prepared flower buds and blossoms towards them, instantly creating a cascading shower of flowers. It was customary to throw flowers at handsome men and women to express admiration, and the Gusu Lan Family's disciples, being noble and talented, were no strangers to this. Lan Xichen and Lan Wangji had been accustomed to it since they were thirteen, so they remained composed, nodding slightly towards the observation platform in acknowledgment before continuing forward.

Suddenly, Lan Wangji raised his hand and caught a flower thrown from behind.

He turned to look and saw that the Yunmeng Jiang family's cavalry formation, which had not yet taken their position, was led by Jiang Cheng, who clicked his tongue impatiently. Beside him, someone sat on a black-maned steed, resting his elbow on the horse's head, casually looking around and chatting with two graceful female cultivators.

Seeing Lan Wangji halt his horse, Lan Xichen asked, "Wangji, what's wrong?"

    Lan Wangji said, "Wei Ying."

Wei Wuxian turned, surprised. "Hanguang Jun, are you calling me? What is it?"

Lan Wangji held up the flower, his expression and tone both cold, "Was it you?"

Wei Wuxian immediately denied, "It wasn't me."

The two female cultivators beside him immediately said, "Don't believe him, it was him!"

Wei Wuxian said, "How can you wrong an innocent person like this? I'm angry!"

The two female cultivators giggled, pulling their reins and running back to their own formation. Lan Wangji lowered the hand holding the flower and shook his head. Jiang Cheng said, "Lord Zewu, Hanguang Jun, sorry, don't mind him."

Lan Xichen smiled, "It's fine. Wei gongzi's gesture of giving flowers, I thank you on Wangji's behalf."

As they slowly moved away amidst the fragrant breeze and shower of flowers, Jiang Cheng looked at the colorful sea of handkerchiefs waving on the observation platform and said to Wei Wuxian, "They're throwing flowers, why are you throwing them too?"

Wei Wuxian said, "He looks good, can't I throw a couple?"

Jiang Cheng sneered, "How old are you, what status do you have to play such tricks?"

Wei Wuxian looked at him, "Do you want some too? There are plenty on the ground, I'll pick some for you?" As he pretended to bend down, Jiang Cheng said, "Get lost!"

At that moment, Jin Guangyao's voice rang out over the square, "The Nie family of Qinghe's cavalry formation is entering!"

Nie Mingjue was extremely tall, and standing, he gave a great sense of oppression. Riding on horseback, he had an even more commanding presence, and the noise on the observation platform immediately lessened. When men ranked on the family list appeared, they were almost always showered with flowers, but Nie Mingjue, ranked seventh, was an exception. If Lan Wangji was cold as ice, with a demeanor as chilling as frost and snow, Nie Mingjue was cold with fire, as if he could burst into anger at any moment, making people dare not provoke him easily. Therefore, even though the girls' hearts were pounding and they held sweaty flowers tightly in their hands, they dared not throw them, fearing to anger him, only to have him slash and collapse the entire observation platform. However, there were many male cultivators cheering for Chifeng-zun, and the cheers were particularly deafening. Beside Nie Mingjue, Nie Huaisang was dressed as exquisitely as ever, with a sword and jade pendants, lightly waving a paper fan. At first glance, he looked like a refined gentleman in a corrupt world, but everyone knew his sword would never be drawn, and he would most likely just wander around the Hundred Phoenix Mountain to enjoy the scenery.

After the Nie family of Qinghe, it was the Yunmeng Jiang family's turn.

Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng rode onto the field, and in an instant, another shower of flowers rained down, making Jiang Cheng's face darken, while Wei Wuxian basked in it, quite content, waving to the highest observation platform. The best seat on the platform belonged to Madam Jin of the Jin family of Lanling, and beside her sat Jiang Yanli. Earlier, Madam Jin had been holding her hand, speaking to her with affectionate expressions. Jiang Yanli usually had a plain and unremarkable appearance, with downcast eyes, but when she saw her two brothers greeting her, her face suddenly brightened. She put down her fan, shyly said a few words to Madam Jin, walked to the edge of the platform, and threw two flowers towards them.

Throwing the flowers took all her strength, and for a moment, Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng were worried she might fall. Seeing Jiang Yanli steady herself, they relaxed, both catching the light purple flowers with ease, smiling, and pinning them to their chests before continuing forward. Many women around looked at Jiang Yanli with envy, and she lowered her head and returned to Madam Jin's side. At that moment, a row of cultivators in white with golden patterns, wearing light armor, rode out on tall horses. The leader, naturally, was family head Jin Guangshan.

Madam Jin quickly patted Jiang Yanli's shoulder, took her hand, and led her to the edge of the platform, pointing out the Jin family of Lanling's cavalry formation below.

Amidst the neighing of horses, suddenly one horse took the lead, galloping around the square and abruptly stopping. The rider was dashing, clad in snow-white attire, his features even more striking than the cinnabar dot between his brows, his bow-drawing posture full of heroic spirit, instantly stirring a frenzy on the observation platform. The man intentionally or unintentionally glanced over the observation platform, though he tried to keep a straight face, a hint of pride was evident in the corners of his eyes and brows.

Wei Wuxian scoffed, laughing uncontrollably on his horse, "I really can't stand him, he's strutting around like a peacock."

Jiang Cheng said, "Behave, sister is watching from the observation platform."

Wei Wuxian said, "Don't worry, as long as he doesn't make Shijie cry again, I won't bother with him. You shouldn't have brought her here."

Jiang Cheng replied, "The Jin family of Lanling insisted, and it was hard to decline."

Wei Wuxian said, "I think it was Madam Jin who insisted. She'll definitely try to get Shijie and that prince charming together later."

As he spoke, Jin Zixuan galloped to the front of the archery range. This row of targets served as a checkpoint before officially entering the mountain. Those participating in the night hunt had to hit one from a specified distance to qualify for entry. The targets had seven rings, corresponding to seven mountain paths. The closer the arrow landed to the bullseye, the more advantageous the corresponding path. Jin Zixuan didn't slow down at all, drawing an arrow from his quiver, pulling the bowstring, and shooting—hitting the bullseye. Cheers erupted from all sides of the viewing platform.

Seeing Jin Zixuan take the spotlight, Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng showed no reaction. Suddenly, a loud snort came from nearby, and a man shouted, "If anyone here is unconvinced, feel free to try and shoot better than Zixuan!"

This man was tall and handsome, with slightly dark skin and a booming voice. He was Jin Guangshan's nephew, Jin Zixuan's cousin, Jin Zixun. Previously, at a flower banquet held at Jin Lingtai, Wei Wuxian had clashed with Jin Zixuan, and Jin Zixun had held a grudge. Now, he came to provoke. Wei Wuxian smiled slightly, and Jin Zixun, seeing no response, looked smug. When the Yunmeng Jiang family's riding formation also arrived at the archery range, Wei Wuxian said to the Twin Jades of Lan, who were testing their bows on horseback, "Lan Zhan, can you do me a favor?"

Lan Wangji glanced at him but said nothing. Jiang Cheng asked, "What are you up to now?"

Lan Wangji said, "What is it?"

Wei Wuxian said, "Can I borrow your forehead ribbon?"

Hearing this, Lan Wangji immediately averted his gaze, no longer looking at him. Lan Xichen, however, laughed and said, "Wei gongzi, you might not know..."

But Lan Wangji interrupted, "Elder brother, no need to explain."

    Lan Xichen said, "Alright."

Jiang Cheng almost wanted to slap Wei Wuxian off his horse. This guy clearly knew Lan Wangji would never lend it, yet he still asked, purely stirring up trouble. If it weren't for the occasion, he swore he would have done it. He said, "What do you need a forehead ribbon for? To hang yourself? I'll lend you a belt, no need to thank me."

Wei Wuxian, while untying the black band from his wrist guard, said, "Keep your belt. If I can't have the forehead ribbon, I don't want your thing either."

    Jiang Cheng said, "You—"

Before he could finish, Wei Wuxian quickly tied the black band over his eyes, nocked an arrow, drew the bowstring, and released—bullseye!

This series of actions was executed so smoothly and swiftly that others didn't even realize what he was doing, nor did they see his movements clearly. The bullseye was pierced clean through. After a moment of silence, thunderous applause erupted from all directions, even more fervent than the cheers for Jin Zixuan.

Wei Wuxian smirked slightly, twirled the longbow in his hand, and tossed it behind him. Seeing that Wei Wuxian had taken the spotlight from the Jin family of Lanling, Jin Zixun snorted heavily, feeling both annoyed and jealous. He said, "It's just the opening shot, all flashy and no substance. You're blindfolded now, but do you dare to keep it on for the entire night hunt? Let's see who comes out on top at Hundred Phoenix Mountain!"

    Wei Wuxian said, "Sure?"

Jin Zixun waved his hand and ordered, "Let's go!"

His cultivators quickly spurred their horses forward, trying to be the first to enter and seize the advantage, swiftly capturing the highest-grade prey. Jin Guangshan, seeing his riding formation so well-trained, was quite pleased. Noticing that Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng were still on their horses, he laughed and said, "Jiang family head, Wei gongzi, why aren't you entering the mountain yet? Be careful, or Zixun will take all the prey."

Wei Wuxian said, "No rush. He won't get them."

Everyone was puzzled. Jin Guangshan was still pondering what "won't get them" meant when he saw Wei Wuxian dismount and say to Jiang Cheng, "You go ahead."

Jiang Cheng said, "Take it easy, don't go overboard."

Wei Wuxian waved his hand, and Jiang Cheng tugged the reins, leading the Yunmeng Jiang family members galloping away.

Wei Wuxian, blindfolded, with his hands behind his back, walked leisurely toward the mountain path of Hundred Phoenix Mountain, as if he weren't there to participate in the night hunt but rather to take a leisurely stroll in his own backyard.

Everyone wondered, could he really be planning to keep the blindfold on for the entire night hunt? How could he participate like that?

Exchanging glances, they decided it wasn't their concern and were content to watch the show, each setting off on their own.

Wei Wuxian walked alone for a long time, finally finding a perfect resting spot deep within Hundred Phoenix Mountain.

A thick branch, jutting out horizontally from an even thicker tree trunk, blocked his path. Wei Wuxian patted the rough bark a couple of times, finding it quite sturdy, and then nimbly hopped onto it.

The clamor from the hunting platform had long been blocked out by the forest. Wei Wuxian leaned against the tree, his eyes narrowed beneath the black cloth. Sunlight filtered through the gaps between the leaves, dappling his face.

He raised Chenqing, blew into it, and his fingers lightly caressed the flute. The flute's clear, melodious notes soared skyward like a bird, echoing far and wide through the forest.

As Wei Wuxian played the flute, he let one leg dangle, gently swaying. The tip of his boot brushed against the wild grass below, unbothered by the morning dew dampening the green blades.

After finishing the tune, Wei Wuxian crossed his arms and adjusted to a more comfortable position against the tree. The flute was tucked into his chest, and the flower pinned over his heart still gave off a faint, cool fragrance.

He sat there for who knows how long, nearly dozing off, when he suddenly stirred and woke up.

    Someone was approaching.

But this person carried no killing intent, so he remained lazily leaning against the tree, not bothering to get up or even remove the black cloth covering his eyes. He just tilted his head a bit.

After a while, hearing no response from the other person, Wei Wuxian couldn't help but speak up, "Are you here for the hunt?"

    No answer.

Wei Wuxian said, "You won't find anything to hunt around here."

Still, the other person remained silent but took a few steps closer.

Wei Wuxian grew a little more alert. Ordinary cultivators usually showed some wariness around him, even in crowded places, let alone being alone and this close. If it weren't for the fact that this person carried no killing intent, Wei Wuxian might have thought they had ill intentions. He straightened slightly, turned his head toward the direction of the person, and with a slight smile, was about to say something when he was suddenly pushed hard.

Wei Wuxian's back slammed against the tree. His right hand was about to pull off the black cloth when it was immediately seized by the newcomer. The grip was firm, and he couldn't break loose, yet there was still no killing intent. Wei Wuxian's left sleeve twitched, about to release a talisman, but the other person detected his intention and similarly captured his left hand, pressing both hands against the tree with an extremely forceful motion. Just as Wei Wuxian was about to kick out with his foot, he suddenly felt a warm sensation on his lips and froze on the spot.

The sensation was strange and unfamiliar—moist and warm. At first, Wei Wuxian had no idea what was happening, his mind blank. When he finally realized, he was utterly shocked.

This person was holding his wrists, pinning him against the tree, and kissing him.

He thrashed, trying to break free and tear off the blindfold, but he couldn't break the grip. He was about to struggle again but suddenly stopped himself.

The person kissing him seemed to be trembling slightly.

    Wei Wuxian immediately stopped struggling.

He thought to himself, "This girl must be strong, yet she's so timid and nervous?" Otherwise, she wouldn't have taken this opportunity to ambush him. She must have mustered great courage to do such a thing. Moreover, her cultivation seemed strong, so her pride must be even greater. If he rashly removed the black cloth and saw her, how embarrassed and awkward would she feel?

Their lips lingered, hesitant yet unwilling to part. Wei Wuxian hadn't decided what to do when the tender kiss suddenly turned fierce. His teeth weren't clenched tightly, and the other person invaded, leaving him completely defenseless. His breathing grew ragged, and he tried to turn his head away, but the other person gripped his face and forced him back. As their tongues intertwined, he felt dizzy, until the other person bit his lower lip, lingered for a moment, and reluctantly pulled away, leaving him barely able to regain his senses.

Wei Wuxian was left weak from the kiss, leaning against the tree for a while before some strength returned to his arms.

He raised his hand and yanked off the blindfold, the sudden sunlight stinging his eyes. After finally opening them, he looked around—bushes, old trees, wild grass, and withered vines—but there was no sign of another person.

Wei Wuxian was still in a daze. He sat on the branch for a while, and when he jumped down, his legs felt weak, and his head was heavy.

He quickly steadied himself against the tree, cursing himself for being so useless as to be kissed until his legs gave out. He looked around but saw no trace of anyone. What just happened felt like an absurd yet tantalizing daydream, making Wei Wuxian think of the legends of mountain spirits and ghosts.

But he was certain it wasn't a mountain spirit or ghost—it had to be a person.

Recalling the sensation, a vague itch crept up to his heart. Wei Wuxian's right hand touched his chest, only to find that the flower pinned there earlier was gone.

He searched the ground but found nothing. It couldn't have just vanished.

Wei Wuxian was stunned for a while, unconsciously touching his lips. After a long pause, he muttered, "How absurd... that was mine..."

After searching the area and finding no one, Wei Wuxian felt both amused and exasperated. He knew the other person was likely hiding from him and wouldn't reappear, so he aimlessly wandered through the forest. After walking for a while, he suddenly heard a heavy thud ahead. Looking up, he saw a tall figure in white—none other than Lan Wangji.

But this person, though clearly Lan Wangji, was doing something uncharacteristic of him. When Wei Wuxian saw him, he was punching a tree, breaking it in half with sheer force.

Wei Wuxian, puzzled, asked, "Lan Zhan! What are you doing?"

The man turned abruptly—it was Lan Wangji. But at this moment, faint bloodshot veins were visible in his eyes, and his expression could only be described as terrifying. Wei Wuxian was stunned and said, "Whoa, that's terrifying."

Lan Wangji sternly said, "Keep your distance!"

Wei Wuxian replied, "I just arrived, and you're telling me to leave. Do you really dislike me that much?"

Lan Wangji said, "Stay away from me!"

Apart from those days at the bottom of the Tortoise of Slaughter cave, this was the first time Wei Wuxian had seen Lan Wangji so out of control. Back then, the situation was special and understandable, but why was he acting like this now when everything seemed fine?

Wei Wuxian stepped back, keeping his distance, and continued to ask, "Hey, Lan Zhan, what's going on with you? Are you okay? If something's wrong, just say it."

Lan Wangji avoided looking directly at him, unsheathed Bichen, and with a few flashes of blue light, the surrounding trees were swept by sword energy, collapsing moments later.

After standing still with his sword for a while, his fingers clenched, knuckles whitening, as if he had calmed down slightly. Suddenly, he looked back, staring intently at Wei Wuxian.

Wei Wuxian felt a strange unease. His eyes had been covered by the black band for over an hour, and the sunlight was still dazzling to him. After removing the band, tears welled up in his eyes, and his lips were slightly swollen. Wei Wuxian felt that his current appearance must be unsightly. Being stared at like this, he couldn't help but touch his chin and said, "Lan Zhan?"

    "..."

    Lan Wangji said, "It's fine."

With a clang, he sheathed his sword and turned to leave. Wei Wuxian still felt that something was off and, after some thought, decided to follow him just in case. He reached for Lan Wangji's wrist to check his pulse, but Lan Wangji sidestepped and looked at him coldly. Wei Wuxian said, "Don't look at me like that. I just want to see what's wrong with you. You were acting so strange earlier. Are you sure you're not poisoned or had some mishap during night hunting?"

    Lan Wangji said, "No."

Seeing that his expression had finally returned to normal and that he was likely fine, Wei Wuxian felt relieved. Although he was still curious about what had happened, he knew it wasn't good to pry too much, so he made some casual remarks. Lan Wangji initially remained silent but eventually responded with a few short words.

The lingering warmth and slight puffiness on Wei Wuxian's lips kept reminding him that he had just lost his first kiss, which he had guarded for twenty years. He had been kissed so passionately that he was left dazed, and he didn't even know who the other person was or what they looked like. This was truly outrageous.

Wei Wuxian sighed softly and suddenly asked, "Lan Zhan, have you ever kissed someone?"

If Jiang Cheng were here and heard him asking such a frivolous and pointless question, he would undoubtedly punch him immediately.

Lan Wangji also suddenly stopped in his tracks, his voice cold and slightly stiff, "Why are you asking this?"

    Wei Wuxian smiled knowingly.

He squinted and said, "You haven't, right? I knew it. I was just asking casually. No need to get so angry."

Lan Wangji said, "How do you know?"

Wei Wuxian replied, "Isn't it obvious? You always have such a stern face. Who would dare to kiss you? Naturally, I don't expect you to take the initiative to kiss someone else. I think your first kiss will be guarded for a lifetime, hahaha..."

He was quite pleased with himself, while Lan Wangji remained expressionless, though his demeanor seemed to soften slightly.

After Wei Wuxian finished laughing, Lan Wangji asked, "What about you?"

Wei Wuxian raised an eyebrow and said, "Me? Do you even need to ask? I've got plenty of experience."

The slight softening in Lan Wangji's expression was quickly replaced by a layer of frost.

At that moment, Wei Wuxian suddenly fell silent and said, "Shh!"

He listened attentively for a moment, then pulled Lan Wangji behind a bush.

Lan Wangji didn't understand his intention and was about to ask when he saw Wei Wuxian staring in a certain direction. Following his gaze, he saw two figures, one in white and one in purple, walking slowly under the blue sky.

The person leading the way was tall and slender, with a handsome yet domineering appearance, a cinnabar dot between his eyebrows, wearing white robes trimmed with gold, and adorned with dazzling accessories. He walked with his head held high, radiating extreme arrogance—this was none other than Jin Zixuan. Following him was a petite figure with small, hurried steps, head bowed and silent, forming a stark contrast to the imposing Jin Zixuan ahead—this was Jiang Yanli.

Wei Wuxian thought to himself, "I knew Madam Jin would definitely arrange for Shijie and that golden peacock to come out alone."

Beside him, Lan Wangji noticed his disdainful expression and whispered, "What grudge do you have against Jin Zixuan?"

    Wei Wuxian snorted.

To ask why Wei Wuxian disliked Jin Zixuan so much, the story was indeed a long one.

Lady Yu and Madam Jin, Jin Zixuan's mother, were close friends since childhood. They had made a pact that if their future children were both boys, they would become sworn brothers; if both were girls, they would become sworn sisters; and if one was a boy and the other a girl, they would definitely marry each other.

The two matriarchs had a close relationship, knew each other well, and were of equal social standing. This marriage arrangement was considered a perfect match, and everyone praised it as a union made in heaven. Unfortunately, the parties involved did not feel the same way.

Jin Zixuan had been a pampered child since birth, fair and delicate, with a cinnabar dot between his eyebrows. Born into a noble family and exceptionally intelligent, he was adored by everyone and had a proud demeanor even as a child. Madam Jin had brought him to Lotus Pier several times, but neither Wei Wuxian nor Jiang Cheng liked playing with him. Only Jiang Yanli always tried to feed him the food she prepared, though Jin Zixuan seldom paid her any heed, which often infuriated Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng.

Back when Wei Wuxian caused a scene at the Cloud Recesses, he ruined the marriage arrangement between the Jin and Jiang families. After returning to Lotus Pier, he apologized to Jiang Yanli, who simply patted his head without saying much. Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng thought the matter was over, and that breaking off the engagement was for the best. However, they later realized that Jiang Yanli must have been deeply hurt at the time.

During the middle of the Sunshot Campaign, the Yunmeng Jiang family went to Langya to support the Jin family of Lanling. Due to a shortage of personnel, Jiang Yanli joined them on the battlefield.

Knowing her cultivation level was not high, she did what she could, taking care of the cultivators' meals. Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng initially disagreed, but since Jiang Yanli was skilled in cooking, enjoyed her work, got along well with others, and was safe, they eventually thought it wasn't so bad.

Given the harsh conditions and meager meals, Jiang Yanli worried that her two younger brothers, who were picky eaters, wouldn't eat well. So, she secretly prepared two extra bowls of soup for Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng every day. However, unbeknownst to anyone else, there was a third bowl, which she gave to Jin Zixuan, who was also in Langya at the time.

Jin Zixuan didn't know this either. Although he enjoyed the soup and appreciated the gesture, Jiang Yanli never left her name. Little did she know, a low-ranking female cultivator had witnessed everything. This cultivator was a household servant of the Jin family of Lanling. With low cultivation herself, she worked alongside Jiang Yanli. She was pretty and shrewd, and out of curiosity, she followed Jiang Yanli a few times and soon figured out what was happening. She took the chance to loiter outside Jin Zixuan's room after Jiang Yanli had delivered the soup, deliberately letting Jin Zixuan catch a glimpse of her.

Jin Zixuan, having finally caught someone, naturally pressed for answers. The woman cleverly did not admit to anything but instead blushed and vaguely denied it, making it seem as though she had done it but didn't want Jin Zixuan to discover her kind intentions. Thus, Jin Zixuan didn't force her to confess, but he began to show her favor and care, even promoting her from a household servant to a guest cultivator. For a long time, Jiang Yanli remained unaware of this, until one day, after delivering the soup, she was unexpectedly caught by Jin Zixuan, who had returned temporarily to retrieve some letters.

Jin Zixuan naturally questioned Jiang Yanli about why she had come to his room. Jiang Yanli was initially too afraid to explain, but as his tone grew more suspicious, she nervously confessed the truth.

However, this excuse had already been used by someone else.

It was easy to imagine how Jin Zixuan reacted upon hearing this.

Thus, he immediately "exposed" Jiang Yanli's "lie." Jiang Yanli never expected such a turn of events. She had always been low-key, and few even knew she was the daughter of the Yunmeng Jiang family. In that moment, she couldn't provide any solid evidence and, as she tried to explain, grew increasingly disheartened. Finally, Jin Zixuan coldly snapped at her, "Don't think that just because you come from a prominent family, you can steal and trample on others' feelings. Some people, even if they come from humble backgrounds, have far nobler character than those from prestigious families. Please respect yourself."

From Jin Zixuan's words, Jiang Yanli finally understood a few things.

From the very beginning, Jin Zixuan had never believed that a woman like Jiang Yanli, with her low cultivation level, could contribute anything meaningful on the battlefield. In his eyes, she was just there to get closer to him, to cause trouble.

Jin Zixuan had never understood her and had never made an effort to. Therefore, he couldn't believe her.

After being scolded by him, Jiang Yanli stood there and suddenly burst into tears. When Wei Wuxian returned, he happened to witness this scene.

Although his Shijie had a gentle temperament, she rarely shed tears in front of others, except for the time they had all cried together after the fall of Lotus Pier. Never had she cried so loudly and so miserably in front of so many people. Wei Wuxian was utterly bewildered. When he questioned her, Jiang Yanli was crying so hard she couldn't even speak. Seeing Jin Zixuan standing there dumbfounded, Wei Wuxian flew into a rage, thinking, "It's that damn guy again!" He lashed out at Jin Zixuan, and the two erupted into a fierce brawl. Their fight was so intense that all the cultivators in the area came out to break it up. Amid the chaos, Wei Wuxian learned the truth and became even more furious. He vowed that one day Jin Zixuan would die by his hand and ordered the female cultivator to be dragged out. After a confrontation, the truth came to light, and Jin Zixuan was left utterly stiff. Wei Wuxian continued to berate him, but Jin Zixuan, pale-faced, did not retaliate, not even when Wei Wuxian hit him. If Jiang Yanli hadn't later taken Wei Wuxian's hand, and if Jiang Cheng and Jin Guangshan hadn't returned to pull Wei Wuxian away, Jin Zixuan might not have been able to participate in the Hundred Phoenix Mountain hunt to this day.

Afterward, Jiang Yanli continued to help in Langya but strictly stuck to her duties. She no longer sent soup to Jin Zixuan and didn't even glance at him. Soon after, the crisis in Langya was resolved, and Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng took her back to Yunmeng. As for Jin Zixuan, whether out of guilt or due to Madam Jin's harsh scolding, he gradually began to show more interest in Jiang Yanli after the Sunshot Campaign.

Those who knew about the incident mostly dismissed it as a misunderstanding, thinking that once clarified, it wasn't a big deal. But Wei Wuxian would never see it that way. He detested Jin Zixuan, this self-important prince, this flamboyant golden peacock, this superficial fool. He didn't believe for a moment that a narcissist like Jin Zixuan would ever acknowledge his faults. His sudden interest in Jiang Yanli was likely due to Madam Jin's relentless pressure and scolding, forcing him to reluctantly fulfill his duty.

However, despite his hatred, Wei Wuxian had to hold back for Jiang Yanli's sake. Lan Wangji glanced at him, seemingly puzzled, but Wei Wuxian had no time to explain. He merely pressed a finger to his lips, signaling for silence, and continued to watch. Lan Wangji's pale eyes lingered for a moment on Wei Wuxian's moist, full lips before shifting his gaze away.

In the distance, Jin Zixuan parted the grass, unveiling the carcass of a massive, serpent-like beast. After a moment, he said, "It's dead."

    Jiang Yanli nodded.

Jin Zixuan said, "A measuring snake."

    Jiang Yanli asked, "What?"

Jin Zixuan said, "It's a demonic creature from the southern barbarian lands. It can suddenly rise up when it encounters a person, then challenge you to see who is taller. If it's taller, it will devour the person. It's not much of a threat; it just looks intimidating."

Jiang Yanli seemed puzzled as to why he suddenly started explaining these things to her. Logically, she should have said something like "Young Master Jin is knowledgeable and talented" or "Young Master Jin is calm and composed," but what he had just said was extremely basic common knowledge, purely trying to make conversation. Such insincere flattery, which sounded utterly fake, was probably something only Jin Guangyao could say without a hint of guilt. Jiang Yanli could only nod again. Wei Wuxian guessed she had probably been nodding all the way here.

Then came a stretch of silence, the awkward atmosphere seeping through the grass and hitting the faces of the two people hiding behind the bushes. After a while, Jin Zixuan finally led Jiang Yanli back. However, as he walked, he continued, "This particular measuring snake has scales covering its skin, and its fangs extend past its jaw. It must be a variant, difficult for ordinary people to deal with. Ordinary arrows can't penetrate these scales."

After a pause, he added in a seemingly indifferent tone, "But it's still not a significant threat. None of the prey in this year's hunting competition are much of a threat. They can't harm anyone from our Jin family of Lanling."

Hearing the last two sentences, that familiar arrogance resurfaced. Wei Wuxian felt displeased but noticed Lan Wangji expressionlessly staring at Jin Zixuan. Wei Wuxian found it strange and followed his gaze, only to be speechless, thinking, "Since when did Jin Zixuan start walking with his arms and legs moving in sync?!"

Jiang Yanli said, "It's best if the hunt doesn't harm anyone."

Jin Zixuan replied, "What value does prey have if it poses no danger to anyone? If you visit the private hunting grounds of the Jin family of Lanling, you can see many rare prey."

Wei Wuxian sneered inwardly: Who would want to visit your hunting grounds!

Unexpectedly, Jin Zixuan went ahead and made a decision, saying, "I happen to have some free time next month. I can take you there."

Jiang Yanli softly said, "Thank you for your kindness, Young Master Jin. But there's no need to trouble yourself."

Jin Zixuan was taken aback and blurted out, "Why?"

How could one even answer such a question? Jiang Yanli seemed uneasy and lowered her head.

Jin Zixuan asked, "You don't like watching hunts?"

Jiang Yanli nodded. Jin Zixuan said, "Then why did you come this time?"

If it weren't for Madam Jin's strong insistence, Jiang Yanli would never have come, but how could she say that out loud?

Seeing Jiang Yanli remain silent, Jin Zixuan's face turned red and then pale, looking extremely uncomfortable. After a long pause, he forced out a stiff sentence, "Do you not like watching hunts, or do you not want to go with me?"

Jiang Yanli whispered, "It's not that..."

Wei Wuxian knew she was afraid that Jin Zixuan had invited her because of Madam Jin's wishes, but in his heart, he didn't truly want to, and she didn't want to force him. But Jin Zixuan had no idea about this. All he knew was that he had never felt so humiliated in his life. Not only was this the first time he had been rejected by a girl, but it was also the first time his invitation had been turned down. A surge of anger rushed to his forehead, and after a while, he suddenly let out a cold laugh and said, "Fine."

    Jiang Yanli said, "I'm sorry."

Jin Zixuan coldly replied, "What do you have to be sorry for? Think what you will. It's not like I wanted to invite you in the first place. If you don't want to, forget it."

Wei Wuxian's blood rushed to his head. He wanted to rush out and fight Jin Zixuan again, but then he thought it might be better for his sister to see this man's true colors, to despise him completely and never think of him again. So he suppressed his anger and decided to endure a little longer. Jiang Yanli's lips trembled, but she didn't say anything. She bowed slightly to Jin Zixuan and said softly, "Excuse me."

She turned and left, walking back alone in silence. Jin Zixuan stood coldly for a while, looking in another direction. After a moment, he suddenly said, "Stop!"

Jiang Yanli didn't turn around. Jin Zixuan grew even angrier and took three steps forward to grab her hand, but a black shadow flashed before his eyes. Before he could see clearly, he was struck in the chest by a palm. Jin Zixuan swung his sword and retreated several steps. When he looked up, he angrily said, "Wei Wuxian, why is it always you?!"

Wei Wuxian stood in front of Jiang Yanli and shouted, "I haven't even said anything yet! Why is it always you?!"

Jin Zixuan said, "Attacking without cause, are you out of your mind?!"

Wei Wuxian struck out with his palm and said, "I have a reason for hitting you! What do you mean 'without cause'? What were you trying to do grabbing my sister in a fit of anger?!"

Jin Zixuan dodged and countered with a sword strike, saying, "If I didn't grab her, should I let her wander alone in the mountains?!"

This sword beam was deflected by another, shooting straight into the sky. Jin Zixuan, seeing the newcomer, exclaimed in surprise, "Hanguang Jun?"

Lan Wangji sheathed Bichen and stood between the three, remaining silent. Wei Wuxian was about to step forward when Jiang Yanli grabbed him and said, "A-Xian!..."

At the same time, a large, noisy crowd surged into the forest. The leader shouted, "What's going on here?!"

It turned out that the sword beams from Lan Wangji and Jin Zixuan had shot into the sky, alarming the nearby cultivators. They quickly realized a fight was happening and rushed over, arriving just in time to see the strange standoff among the four in the forest. Coincidentally, the leader of the group was none other than Jin Zixun, who said, "Zixuan, is this Wei guy causing trouble for you again?!"

Jin Zixuan replied, "This is none of your business, stay out of it!" Seeing Wei Wuxian pulling Jiang Yanli away again, he shouted, "Stop!"

Wei Wuxian retorted, "You really want to fight? Fine!"

Jin Zixun said, "Wei, you keep targeting Zixuan, what exactly is your problem?"

Wei Wuxian glanced at him and asked, "Who are you?"

Jin Zixun was stunned, then furious, "You don’t even know who I am?!"

Wei Wuxian replied, puzzled, "Why should I know who you are?"

At the beginning of the Sunshot Campaign, Jin Zixun had been injured and remained behind the front lines, so he had never personally witnessed Wei Wuxian's prowess on the battlefield. He had only heard rumors, which he brushed off as exaggerations. Earlier, Wei Wuxian had used a whistle to summon the evil spirits in the mountains, taking away several corpses that Jin Zixun and his group were about to hunt, wasting their efforts and leaving them frustrated. Now, Wei Wuxian had the audacity to ask who he was, which made Jin Zixun feel a strange sense of being slighted. He knew Wei Wuxian, but Wei Wuxian didn’t know him, and even dared to ask who he was in public, which made him feel humiliated. The more he thought about it, the angrier he became. Just as he was about to speak, a golden light flashed in the sky, and a second wave of people arrived.

This group descended on their swords, landing smoothly. The leader was a woman with strikingly beautiful features, her face carrying a hint of sternness. She was both heroic and graceful. Jin Zixun called out, "Aunt!"

Jin Zixuan was startled and said, "Mother! Why are you here?" Then he realized that since both his and Lan Wangji's sword beams had shot into the sky, Madam Jin, who was at the viewing platform, would naturally come to check. He glanced at the Lanling Jin cultivators accompanying his mother and asked, "Why did you bring so many people? The hunt doesn’t require your intervention."

Madam Jin spat, "Don’t get ahead of yourself, who said I came for you!"

She noticed Jiang Yanli hiding behind Wei Wuxian and immediately softened her expression, stepping forward to hold her hand and saying gently, "A-Li, what happened to you?"

Jiang Yanli replied, "Thank you, Madam, I’m fine."

Madam Jin, sharp as ever, asked, "Did that brat bully you again?"

    Jiang Yanli quickly said, "No."

Jin Zixuan shifted slightly, wanting to speak but holding back. Madam Jin, knowing her son's temperament, immediately guessed what had happened and flew into a rage, scolding him, "Jin Zixuan! Are you trying to get yourself killed?! What did you promise me before we left?!"

    Jin Zixuan stammered, "I—!"

Wei Wuxian interjected, "No matter what your son promised you, Madam Jin, from now on, he and my shijie will go their separate ways!"

He was furious, and his words were not particularly polite. Fortunately, Madam Jin was focused on comforting Jiang Yanli and didn’t dwell on it. However, someone else seized the opportunity to lash out. Jin Zixun shouted, "Wei Wuxian, my aunt is your elder, isn’t it a bit too arrogant for you to speak like that?"

Others agreed, chiming in. Wei Wuxian said, "I’m not targeting Madam Jin, but your cousin has repeatedly insulted my shijie. If the Yunmeng Jiang family can tolerate this, we would be unworthy of being called a noble family! Where is the arrogance in that?"

Jin Zixun sneered, "Where is the arrogance? Isn’t everything about you arrogant? Today is a grand day for the hundred families' hunt, and you’ve certainly made a spectacle of yourself! You’ve taken thirty percent of the prey all by yourself, aren’t you proud of that?"

Lan Wangji tilted his head slightly and asked, "Thirty percent of the prey?"

The hundred or so people who had come with Jin Zixun all wore expressions of deep resentment. Seeing that Lan Wangji, who was rumored to have a poor relationship with Wei Wuxian, had spoken up as if inquiring, someone eagerly said, "Hanguang Jun, you don’t know yet, do you? Earlier, during the hunt in Hundred Phoenix Mountain, after searching for a long time, we found that there wasn’t a single corpse or vengeful spirit left in the hunting grounds!"

"After asking Lianfang-zun at the viewing platform, we learned that less than half an hour after the hunt began, a flute melody echoed through Hundred Phoenix Mountain, and then, almost all the corpses and vengeful spirits walked one by one into the Yunmeng Jiang family's camp, surrendering themselves!"

"Of the three main types of prey in Hundred Phoenix Mountain, only demons and monsters remain now..."

"As for the ghosts, they’ve all been summoned away by Wei Wuxian alone..."

Jin Zixun said, "You only think about yourself and ignore everyone else, isn’t that arrogance enough?"

Wei Wuxian suddenly understood. It all came down to finding an excuse to attack him. He smiled and said, "Didn’t you say it yourself? The opening arrow means nothing, the real test is on the night hunting field."

Jin Zixun let out a sarcastic laugh, as if finding it ridiculous, and said, "You rely on evil tricks, not real skill. Blowing a flute a few times, how does that count as real skill?"

Wei Wuxian, puzzled, replied, "I didn’t use any underhanded tactics, so why doesn’t it count? You can try blowing a flute too and see if any corpses or vengeful spirits will follow you."

Jin Zixun said, "Your disregard for the rules is just as bad as resorting to underhanded tricks!"

Upon hearing this, Lan Wangji frowned. Madam Jin finally seemed to notice the dispute and remarked indifferently, "Zixun, that's enough."

Wei Wuxian, too lazy to argue with him, smiled and said, "Alright then, I truly don't know what constitutes real skill. Please show it to me and let me see it."

If he could win, Jin Zixun wouldn't be feeling so frustrated right now. He choked for a moment, growing angrier the more he thought about it, and sneered, "No wonder you don't see anything wrong with your actions. Young Master Wei, breaking the rules isn't a first for you. You didn't bring your sword to the last flower banquet or this hunting conference. Such a grand occasion, and you show no respect for etiquette. Where do you think that leaves those of us who attended with you?"

Wei Wuxian brushed him off and turned to Lan Wangji, saying, "Lan Zhan, I forgot to mention earlier, thanks for deflecting that sword strike for me."

Seeing Wei Wuxian's dismissive attitude, Jin Zixun clenched his teeth and said, "The upbringing of the Yunmeng Jiang family is nothing to brag about!"

And a completely new one at that (Ah!).
