Chapter 65: Big Gold Smash
byChapter 65 The Big Spender
Yun Fan lay in bed, unable to sleep. He touched his ears, then his lips, his mind completely consumed by Wen Zhaofu.
Wen Zhaofu had kissed him—within a single day, from his forehead to his lips. Things were moving quite fast.
Not only had he kissed him, but Wen Zhaofu had also murmured a lengthy speech in his ear. It was so close that Yun Fan was too focused on feeling the warmth of his breath to catch the words. When he finally made out the content, he felt so utterly captivated by Wen Zhaofu that his whole body grew warm and weak.
Wen Zhaofu seemed to be reciting poetry, but Yun Fan felt like it wasn't in Chinese. In the long passage, he only caught the words "like," "really like," and "can't help it."
"Ah—" Yun Fan let out a soundless gasp and sat up.
Rubbing his rapidly beating chest, he concluded that Wen Zhaofu had been holding back before. Just this one day had completely enthralled him.
"Sir, you're such a scoundrel." Yun Fan clenched his fist and lightly punched the wall facing Wen Zhaofu's bedroom.
His finally powered-on phone lit up. Yun Fan grabbed it and saw it was Wen Zhaofu again.
Mr. Zhaofu: Xiao Yun, can't sleep, miss you so much, what should I do? / Cloud emoji
Yun Fan was so startled he threw the phone, clutched his chest, and rolled over onto his pillow. After calming down for a moment, he resignedly picked up the phone again.
Xiao Yun: Sleep! Sleep! Sleep!!!
On the other side, Wen Zhaofu looked at the screen and chuckled, then let out a long, relieved sigh.
The next morning, when Yun Fan woke up, Wen Zhaofu was no longer at the estate. Just as he was feeling a bit empty inside, he noticed the note Wen Zhaofu had left for him on the table.
"Urgent matter at the London company. Will return after handling it. Make sure to eat well."
Seeing the little heart after Wen Zhaofu's signature, Yun Fan smiled and picked up the envelope on the table. The weight felt familiar. He opened it and, sure enough, found a shiny big gold brick inside.
Yun Fan immediately beamed, laughing so much that the estate butler frowned. Others might think Wen Zhaofu was throwing money at him, but Yun Fan knew that wasn't the case.
Wen Zhaofu was saying, "I'm trying to win your affection. Surely giving gold is acceptable?"
And it was more than acceptable! Yun Fan hefted it in his hand and suddenly felt his appetite surge.
What surprised Yun Fan, however, was that after waiting all morning, he didn't see Wen Zhaofu return. Instead, he was met by a hurried Cheng Yu.
"Butler Yun, I need you to fill in."
*
Well, so much for coming here to relax. Yun Fan was once again roped into playing the piano.
"Who recommended me?" Yun Fan asked with a frown.
Cheng Yu straightened his collar. "Yours truly."
Yun Fan rolled his eyes at Cheng Yu, and Liu Erxing, who saw it, shook with laughter. When Yun Fan went to rehearse with the band, Liu Erxing patted Cheng Yu's shoulder and said, "You're sucking up to the wrong person."
"Are you calling Yun Fan a donkey?" Cheng Yu glared at Liu Erxing.
"Donkey meat sandwiches are delicious," Liu Erxing said with a laugh. "Don't you like them?"
Cheng Yu made a face and turned away, wanting to go check on Yun Fan's preparations. Liu Erxing grabbed him. "Yun Fan isn't in the mood to see you now. Don't go and annoy him."
"Since when do you know everything?" Cheng Yu said dejectedly.
Meanwhile, when Wen Zhaofu received the news, he was also a little frustrated. He had originally planned to return to the estate early to spend more time with Yun Fan, but who would have thought Yun Fan would be whisked away at the last minute.
Once again, Wen Zhaofu felt that the owner of Shengken was simply pretentious. Clearly knowing nothing about music, yet insisting on hosting a concert. It was the same at Shengken Academy, and now at Shengken Manor, he had to do it again.
What's the point? It just gets in the way of dating!
Since Yun Fan was performing, Wen Zhaofu naturally had to attend. He arrived at the manor and asked for the rehearsal location. The butler initially didn't want him to go, implying he was an outsider and shouldn't interfere with the host's affairs.
Wen Zhaofu gave a cold look, sitting in his wheelchair, tapped the armrest, and pointed ahead: "Go ask your employer if he got my permission before inviting my family to perform."
With that, no one dared to stop him. Wen Zhaofu entered the rehearsal room.
Yun Fan sat at the piano, frowning deeply, staring at the sheet music with a troubled expression. Others in the room were fiddling with their instruments, and he didn't notice Wen Zhaofu's arrival.
"Xiao Yun." Wen Zhaofu maneuvered his wheelchair closer to Yun Fan and gently patted his shoulder.
"Ah, Mr. Zhaofu!" Yun Fan exclaimed in surprise, his voice a bit loud, but he didn't care.
The look in Yun Fan's eyes now held not only their usual brightness but also a new affection that wasn't there before. Wen Zhaofu confirmed this and felt no more urgency. He knew Yun Fan would make things official.
Wen Zhaofu squeezed his fingers: "You've been working hard, Xiao Yun."
"Sir, you must ask them if they're going to pay me," Yun Fan said indignantly. "I won't work for capitalists for free."
"Don't worry, I'll make sure you get paid," Wen Zhaofu patted his waist. "If there's any problem with the piece, let me take a look."
Yun Fan grabbed the sheet music, shifted closer to Wen Zhaofu, and pointed: "Can the melody be written like this? The rhythm is too strange."
Wen Zhaofu glanced at the composer's name and chuckled. Sure enough, it was that charlatan again, specializing in scamming these pretentious bosses out of their money.
This composer claimed he could tailor pieces for the bosses, suitable for different scenarios like waking up, dining, and socializing. The music's main feature was its strangeness, the kind that baffled those who knew better.
"It's truly awful," Wen Zhaofu said bluntly after reading through the score.
Looking at the other musicians in the room, everyone had the same reaction—their faces contorted as if constipated.
Wen Zhaofu took the pen from the music stand, paused for a few seconds, and began editing the score. After a while, he handed it back to Yun Fan, who glanced at it and his eyes lit up.
"Practice this first," Wen Zhaofu touched Yun Fan's hand again. "I'll go check on the others."
Just like that, Wen Zhaofu revised the scores for each section of the orchestra, and the tense atmosphere in the rehearsal room finally lifted.
"Mr. Wen knows how to do this too?" someone recognized him and exclaimed in admiration.
Wen Zhaofu smiled: "I had to step in. It was so bad it would've ruined my appetite."
*
Oh my, the mysterious owner of Shengken Manor shedding tears at the concert! But since phones weren't allowed, no one captured this bizarre moment.
Wen Zhaofu chuckled to himself, thinking the boss probably felt his money was well spent—if such a humorous piece could move someone to tears, he must be experiencing cognitive dissonance.
If Yun Fan weren't performing, Wen Zhaofu would have left long ago. He always felt these kinds of social events were a pure waste of time. Attendees were just showing off their wealth, and the competition among the wealthy was utterly boring.
This time, Cheng Yu and Liu Erxing sat on either side of Wen Zhaofu, like two bodyguards. They wouldn't publicly contradict each other—whether genuinely or not, they were both part of the Wen family.
Once Yun Fan appeared, all three pairs of eyes closely followed the man in the tailcoat. Cheng Yu thought Yun Fan was most pleasing to the eye like this, while Liu Erxing secretly observed Wen Zhaofu.
Unlike before, Wen Zhaofu now seemed completely relaxed. He paid no attention to Cheng Yu or Liu Erxing, simply smiling as he watched Yun Fan.
This calm and composed demeanor actually made Liu Erxing uneasy. He had a gut feeling that something must have happened these past few days.
"Wow!" Liu Erxing wasn't really listening to the music, but he still cheered loudly and clapped vigorously.
Cheng Yu glanced at Liu Erxing, then turned to speak to the cultured Wen Zhaofu: "It's a good thing that Steward Yun gets to make an appearance in front of everyone."
"What's so good about it?" Wen Zhaofu replied discontentedly. "He could have been resting."
This response surprised Cheng Yu greatly. Wen Zhaofu rarely spoke bluntly to anyone, let alone him. There was only one possibility: Wen Zhaofu was angry.
After the event ended, Wen Zhaofu didn't stay to socialize, nor did he push Yun Fan toward the crowd. Instead, he took Yun Fan's hand and led him away directly.
Cheng Yu burned with envy and unease. He turned to look at Liu Erxing, only to find that the clueless guy, who knew nothing about music, had run over to grab the sheet music from the stand.
"Wow, this is a mess. How can anyone read it?" Liu Erxing clicked his tongue and then brought the sheet music to his nose, took a sniff.
On the way back to the manor, Wen Zhaofu made a call to cancel his schedule for the next morning. Yun Fan quickly insisted he wasn't tired, but Wen Zhaofu was firm.
"Playing the piano is mentally and physically draining, and you were filling in last-minute. You need rest." Wen Zhaofu smiled gently, soothing Yun Fan's unease.
Yun Fan nodded. "Then tomorrow we can just stay at home—well, at the manor."
"Good, just the two of us tomorrow." Wen Zhaofu leaned over and kissed the corner of Yun Fan's eye.
The weather didn't cooperate, and it rained the next day. Yun Fan didn't mind. He and Wen Zhaofu relaxed in the study. Yun Fan read while Wen Zhaofu first attended to some work before joining him in reading.
They sat together on a long sofa, with Wen Zhaofu holding Yun Fan close from behind. At first, Yun Fan was quite focused on reading, but then Wen Zhaofu began planting kisses on him now and then, making his mind wander.
When Wen Zhaofu kissed behind his ear again, Yun Fan turned around and hugged Wen Zhaofu's back.
"Do you like it?" Wen Zhaofu gently pinched Yun Fan's earlobe.
Yun Fan nudged Wen Zhaofu's collarbone with his chin. "Do you like it that much?"
Wen Zhaofu raised an eyebrow, his slender fingers gently cupping Yun Fan's face before breaking into a smile. "Of course, I like it very much."
Yun Fan looked at him, his heart racing, but he could tell it wasn't from panic. Instead, he felt at ease because of Wen Zhaofu.
A moment later, Yun Fan scooted up a bit, held Wen Zhaofu's head, and kissed him.
This kiss was different from before—not just a peck this time. With no one around, they were fully immersed, hearing only each other's breaths.
The entanglement seemed endless, the heat with nowhere to go, so they pressed their lips closer and held each other tighter, wishing they'd never wake up.
When Yun Fan felt his lips starting to ache slightly, he drew back. Looking at Wen Zhaofu, he noticed that the usually composed man looked a little lost, as if unsure what to do next.
Yun Fan laughed first. When Wen Zhaofu came to his senses, he tickled Yun Fan's chin. "I feel like I'm dreaming."
Yun Fan paused, then nuzzled against Wen Zhaofu's neck and said affectionately, "No, it's not a dream. It's me."
"Do you like it?" Wen Zhaofu asked again.
This time, Yun Fan didn't retort but answered earnestly, "Yes, I like it. I really like it."
*
It rained all day, and Yun Fan and Wen Zhaofu spent the day cuddling in the villa. Even just staying like this, they never got bored.
Wen Zhaofu hardly let Yun Fan out of his sight. If he couldn't see Yun Fan for more than a minute, he would call out, "Xiao Yun."
Yun Fan would skip over, hug him, or smile, and Wen Zhaofu would be perfectly happy. If only they didn't have to return to Hong Kong and could just stay here.
But they couldn't. There was still a large company waiting for him, and a big family too.
Ah, truly trapped by responsibilities, Wen Zhaofu thought as he watched Yun Fan blink.
Seeing Wen Zhaofu's spaced-out look, Yun Fan laughed and leaned in to ask what was wrong, but he didn't get an answer—only a kiss that left him even more bewildered.
Wen Zhaofu loved kissing him so much that Yun Fan lost count of how many times they kissed in a day, as if he were a kissing fiend.
"Sir, mm, Wen Zhaofu! Big brother, stop!" Each time, Yun Fan had to put a stop to it for the kissing to stop.
When bedtime came, Yun Fan would hurriedly bolt to his room, not daring to linger because he, too, couldn't resist wanting to take things further with Wen Zhaofu.
If it really came to that, they might not make it back to Hong Kong.
Before bed, Yun Fan, half-asleep, got a call from an unknown number. As soon as he answered, his sleepiness vanished.
"Hello, we are the Royal Declaration Guard. Mr. Cheng Yu has something to say to Mr. Yun Fan."
