Chapter 67: Stirring Up Trouble

That evening, after his shower, Bai Suizhi found Kahn sprawled on the bed, legs crossed and casually swinging in the air. A flash of bare calf, dazzlingly white, went unnoticed by Kahn himself, who was happily propping his chin with one hand and fiddling with gifts from his friends with the other, his eyes sparkling with unbridled joy.

Bai Suizhi leaned against the doorframe, watching him. "You like them that much?" he asked.

Kahn looked up with a bright smile. "Mm-hmm."

Bai Suizhi teased, "You’re not going to sleep with them tonight, are you?"

Kahn innocently countered, "Why can't I? I’ll just put them here by the bed—they don't take up much space."

Bai Suizhi set his trap. "How is that not taking up space?"

Kahn, unsuspecting, walked right into it. "I only sleep in this small space, so of course it doesn’t take up space." He even gestured to illustrate the area.

Bai Suizhi, having succeeded, flashed a sly grin. "Then where am I supposed to sleep?"

Kahn froze, then asked blankly, "You… you want to sleep with me?"

Bai Suizhi feigned seriousness. "Everyone sleeps together after confirming their relationship."

Flustered, Kahn sat up, clutching a corner of the blanket. "I didn’t know, I’m sorry. Then I…"

Bai Suizhi couldn’t resist any longer. He walked over, stopped in front of Kahn, and gently ruffled his fluffy hair. "Silly, I was just teasing you."

Kahn pouted. "You called me silly?"

Bai Suizhi pinched his cheek. "It’s not an insult."

Kahn was easily appeased, his annoyance vanishing instantly. Then he asked seriously, "So, are we going to sleep together or not?"

Bai Suizhi’s heart pounded—this was too much. "There’s no such rule, but I kind of hope so."

Kahn thought for a moment, then eagerly hopped off the bed, moved the pile of small trinkets to the table outside, patted the spot beside him, and said, "Then let’s sleep together."

Bai Suizhi felt his throat tighten. With zero confidence in his self-control, he changed his mind. "Never mind, I think the bed’s too small for both of us."

Kahn looked confused. "But we slept together yesterday." He was a strange one—sometimes the most ordinary words could make him blush for ages, yet other times he could utter the most suggestive remarks with that innocent, pure face, which was utterly captivating.

Bai Suizhi abruptly looked away, retreating to his own bed as if fleeing. He pulled up the covers and said awkwardly, "Goodnight, time to sleep!" as if someone were whipping him from behind.

Kahn glanced at him, then at the gifts on the table, before muttering softly and bringing them back to bed.

The next day, Lin Xue found them, her face grave. "There’s news."

Bai Suizhi quickly picked up on her tone. "Bad news?"

Lin Xue rubbed her temples. She hadn’t slept soundly in days while investigating this matter, but her efforts hadn’t been in vain—she’d finally found a lead. "We found someone."

"Who?"

"Chi Shuyuan."

Kahn didn’t recognize the name, but Bai Suizhi was clearly surprised. "The singer?"

Lin Xue nodded. "That’s him."

Though Kahn didn’t understand, he could guess from their reactions. "Is he famous?"

Lin Xue confirmed, "A top-tier celebrity in the entertainment industry. My little sister’s biggest idol."

Bai Suizhi asked, "Is he involved in this?"

Lin Xue: "Yes, he… well, he’s partially a victim."

"What do you mean?"

Lin Xue began recounting what had happened yesterday.

She was about to head home after work. Since her family lived in Zone A, she hadn’t applied for staff housing in Zone B and chose to commute home daily.

While passing by the artificial lake, she encountered a figure—it was Chi Shuyuan. His condition was terrible, with whip marks and scars visible all over his exposed skin. Lin Xue immediately stopped him, but before she could ask anything, the man collapsed, unconscious.

After taking him back, Lin Xue didn’t call a doctor. First, she thought the celebrity might not want this known, and second, the location where he appeared was suspiciously close to Qu Baining’s villa.

There had long been rumors that Chi Shuyuan was kept by a powerful figure, which was why his career in the cutthroat entertainment industry had been so smooth. Lin Xue had heard her sister mention it a few times, always vehemently denying it as malicious slander against her idol.

But now, it seemed those rumors might not be entirely baseless.

Half of the medical staff in the base were under Qu Baining’s command. Without confirming the person’s wishes, Lin Xue naturally wouldn’t take any rash actions.

Fortunately, Chi Shuyuan’s injuries weren’t severe, or she would’ve had to call a doctor. When he woke up, she cut straight to the point: "What happened to your injuries?" Her tone sounded like she was interrogating a criminal.

Chi Shuyuan wasn’t intimidated. He pushed off the blanket and tried to get out of bed. "Thank you for your concern, but I need to go back now."

Lin Xue remained seated, calmly watching his slow, stiff movements. "Back where? To Qu Baining’s place?"

Chi Shuyuan paused, then replied after a moment, "That’s none of your business."

Lin Xue: "You’re right, it’s none of my business." Then she suddenly brought up another matter. "Do you live in Building 21?"

Building 21 was the villa where Kahn had been kidnapped. They’d immediately looked into the villa’s records, which showed the owner was Chi Shuyuan, but they hadn’t been able to find him anywhere in the base. Unexpectedly, she’d stumbled upon him by chance.

For this reason, they’d once listed Chi Shuyuan as a suspect, but judging from his condition, he seemed more like a victim.

Chi Shuyuan looked bewildered. "What Building 21?" His expression didn’t seem fake.

Lin Xue didn’t press further on that topic and instead asked, "Where do you usually live?"

Chi Shuyuan pursed his lips and didn’t answer.

Lin Xue opened her communicator. "Alright, due to a kidnapping case, I need you to come with me."

Chi Shuyuan turned around in shock. "What kidnapping case?"

Lin Xue gave him a polished version of the entire incident.

Bai Suizhi asked, "How did he react?"

Lin Xue: "He was furious."

"Furious?" Kahn asked, confused.

"Yes, he felt Qu Baining had betrayed him." "Huh?" Bai Suizhi and Kahn couldn’t follow his train of thought.

Lin Xue continued, "After I told him everything, he was quiet for a long moment and then said this."

Bai Suizhi concluded, "So it looks like Qu Baining is our prime suspect now."

Realistically, he's the only one who could've infiltrated so many positions, bribed so many people, and been confident enough not to worry about getting caught.

Lin Xue agreed with his view, "Honestly, the bureau hasn’t assigned anyone to investigate this matter. Aside from me, everyone else is turning a blind eye and trying to sweep it under the rug. Luckily, I haven’t been assigned any field work recently, or I wouldn't have been able to look into it even if I wanted to." She added self-mockingly, "I never understood why they wouldn’t allow an investigation before, but now it’s starting to make sense—it's tangled up with some big shot."

Kahn got worked up, "So what do we do now? What about Mo Mo? He’s still looking for his brother."

Lin Xue promised, "I will get to the bottom of this and get answers for everyone."

Bai Suizhi didn’t know what else to say, only advising, "Just don't push yourself too hard, and be careful."

Yue Shaolin’s face had gotten noticeably tanner, and his cheeks were looking pretty gaunt. Seeing Lin Jiajia looking at him with concern, he joked, "Does losing weight make my features more chiseled? Do you love me a little more now?"

Lin Jiajia smacked his shoulder in mock anger, scolding, "You never take anything seriously!"

Yue Shaolin said to Bai Suizhi and Kahn, "See what I have to put up with?"

Bai Suizhi laughed, "Yue-ge, you seem to be loving every minute of it."

Yue Shaolin sighed, "We’re like Zhou Yu and Huang Gai—one willing to hit, the other willing to take it."

Lin Jiajia suddenly noticed something and asked seriously, "What's with your elbow?"

Yue Shaolin lifted his arm, revealing a bright red scrape, "Nothing, just scraped it on the ground."

This was Lin Jiajia's biggest fear—even a small cut could be deadly. Still worried, she pressed, "You're sure it's just a scrape? Have you had it checked? What did the doctor say?"

They'd had this exchange countless times before. Yue Shaolin patiently replied, "Yes, I’m sure. I’ve already seen a doctor, and there’s no infection. Don’t worry."

After a moment of silence, Bai Suizhi asked, "Yue-ge, you…"

Yue Shaolin knew what he was going to say and cut him off, "Don't try to talk me out of it. I’m doing this voluntarily." He then changed the subject, "Do you know Shi Yunzheng?"

Bai Suizhi replied, "Captain Shi? He’s the one who brought us to the base. Do you know him, Yue-ge?"

Yue Shaolin smiled, "Of course I know him. He's leading my current mission. We haven't worked together much, but we crossed paths this time, and he mentioned you."

Kahn asked curiously, "What did he say about us?"

Yue Shaolin said, "He said you’re talented and brave, gutsy enough to commandeer a helicopter to the base."

Bai Suizhi added self-deprecatingly, "And wound up ditching in the ocean."

Yue Shaolin gave them a thumbs-up, "You two are something else. If it were me, I would've bought it ten times over." He knew about their encounter with mutated animals but avoided mentioning it directly.

Bai Suizhi understood his implication, "We all made it through together."

Speaking of Shi Yunzheng, Bai Suizhi grew curious about someone else, "Do you know Shen Yu?"

At this, Yue Shaolin frowned, "You mean that little guy Shi Yunzheng picked up?"

Kahn sensed his displeasure and asked, "What’s wrong with him?"

Yue Shaolin rubbed his temples, "That kid is a handful. When we’re on missions, forget about him helping—if he doesn’t cause trouble, we’re grateful."

Bai Suizhi asked, "He goes on missions with you?"

Yue Shaolin said, "Yeah, I don’t know what Shi Yunzheng was thinking, letting someone like him join the team."

Bai Suizhi asked, "If he’s so disruptive, how does he stay on the team?"

Yue Shaolin sighed in frustration, "That’s the tricky part. If he were always causing trouble, he’d definitely be kicked out. But he always steps up at critical moments, saving many of our comrades. What can you do? We just have to treat him like a little ancestor."

Bai Suizhi asked, "Can’t Captain Shi control him?"

Yue Shaolin laughed, "He saves all his mischief for Shi Yunzheng; he doesn’t bother with anyone else. Who knows what's between those two. Oh, and they still live together. Must be a circus over there every day."

Kahn asked, "They live together?"

Yue Shaolin said, "Yeah, Shen Yu has family in Zone A, but he refuses to stay with them. He insists on cramming into the dorm with Shi Yunzheng."

Hearing this, Bai Suizhi asked, "Yue-ge, why don’t you live in Zone B?"

Yue Shaolin replied, "There are too many friends here—I can’t bring myself to move. Speaking of which, didn’t you come from Zone A too?"

Bai Suizhi chuckled, "True, I couldn’t bring myself to leave either."

A few days later, Lin Xue appeared before them again, looking even more haggard than last time, like she hadn't slept in days. As soon as she sat down, she hit them with a bombshell: "I found their hideout, but I still can't get that warrant." She said gravely, "I’m planning a raid."

Bai Suizhi jumped right in, "How?"

Lin Xue smirked, "Captain Shi is back. I’ll talk him into it."

Bai Suizhi asked, "Just the two of you?"

"That’s enough," Lin Xue said confidently.

Bai Suizhi asked, "What do you need us to do?" He knew Lin Xue wouldn’t come to them without a reason.

Lin Xue got straight to the point, "I need you to cause a distraction here."

Kahn understood, "As a distraction?"

Lin Xue nodded, "Think you can handle that?"

Bai Suizhi and Kahn replied, "We can."

"Good. Here's to luck," Lin Xue said with finality.
