    Chapter 32

Yang Bai stared in terror at the frenzied Yan Gui.

    “Se... Senior Yan?”

Senior Yan looked at him as if he were already dead, his spear thrust forward with lightning speed.

Yang Bai’s mind went blank; he even forgot to run.

Peony, furious, grabbed Yang Bai by the scruff of his neck and bolted away. The spear narrowly pinned itself between his legs, threatening to leave him unable to stand ever again.

Yang Bai’s hair stood on end, and he scrambled after Peony on all fours.

“How did Senior Yan get like this?” Yang Bai wailed in horror, turning just in time to see Yan Gui’s father conjure a fireball bare-handed, streaking toward them.

Peony cursed under her breath. The moment she heard Chen Shenzhi’s retreat order, she had immediately dashed toward Exit A8, only to collide face-to-face with Yang Bai, who had just regained consciousness, the instant the door opened.

In that split second, she figured out exactly what Chen Shenzhi intended.

He wanted Yan Gui to kill Yang Bai.

Damn it, since when are men so scheming?!

As the fireball was about to catch up to Yang Bai, she yanked him into a corridor fork, narrowly avoiding the relentless scorching sphere.

Exhausted, the two leaned against the wall, gasping for breath. Yang Bai’s gaze involuntarily fell on their clasped hands—this was the first time he had held hands with an omega, and it was with the girl he liked.

But soon, any romantic thoughts vanished when he noticed Peony’s palm was clammy and bloody.

He quickly realized it wasn’t just her hand—Peony was soaked in blood from head to toe.

“Did... Senior Yan do all this?”

    Yang Bai’s voice trembled.

“Shut up, it’s not time for chit-chat.” Peony kept her eyes fixed firmly in Yan Gui’s direction. He stood still, not pursuing them.

    Had he regained his senses?

“L-look...” Yang Bai stammered in horror, urging Peony to look toward the corridor’s end.

“Keep still!” Peony hissed softly. “If he catches up, neither of us will escape!”

“But... the hallway is melting...” Yang Bai sounded as if he’d seen a horror movie. Peony immediately looked and saw that the steel-and-concrete underground fortress at the end of the passage had melted into red-hot lava under the extreme heat, flowing menacingly toward them.

Shit! He hadn’t calmed down—the fire from his pheromone outburst had gone completely out of control. The entire underground lab was melting!

How could anyone be this monstrous?!

If they ran even a second slower, they’d be melted into puddles of blood!

“What are you eating?” That little pill gave Yang Bai a very bad feeling.

Peony closed her eyes. Under Yang Bai’s stunned gaze, her hair began to lighten and grow longer, her fingers elongating into wolf claws, and her combat suit ripping apart as her frame expanded.

Yang Bai stared at the white wolf before him—over three meters long and tall as one and a half men—feeling his worldview shatter completely.

“Hop on!” The white wolf tossed her gear pack to Yang Bai, speaking in Peony’s voice, though it now carried a low, bestial tone.

Seeing Yang Bai frozen in place, it grew impatient and snatched him by the collar, throwing him onto its back. “Hold on tight!”

Yang Bai immediately wrapped his arms tightly around its neck.

Without another word, the white wolf bolted toward the exit. It moved with astonishing agility, swift as lightning, and was very familiar with the lab’s layout.

The intense heat had melted most of the supporting structures, and the lab began to collapse, sand streaming in from above. The white wolf raced through the chaos, its breathing growing heavier, until finally, just before being buried alive, it found the last exit leading to daylight.

They both felt a surge of hope; propelled by the collapsing lab behind them, they sprinted desperately toward the exit.

But as they approached, a steel spear came shooting through the air!

The white wolf’s reflexes were faster than humanly possible—its body twisted mid-air at an impossible angle, the spear grazing its belly as it flipped, then getting swallowed by the collapsing lab.

“Senior Yan, how is he so fast?!” Yang Bai exclaimed, staring horrified at the silhouette silhouetted against the exit.

The white wolf’s eyes narrowed, and instead of slowing, it accelerated toward the exit.

Yan Gui watched the bold wolf with a sinister, approving grin, letting it brush past him on purpose. Just as half its body emerged into the daylight, he suddenly reached out and grabbed its tail.

Yang Bai was thrown off without warning, tumbling clumsily across the sandy dunes under the night sky. When he looked back, he saw the white wolf being dragged back into the tunnel, Yan Gui about to snap its neck.

Peony, however, was a survivor hardened through countless trials, with fighting skills far beyond ordinary fighters. In the blink of an eye, she shifted back to human form, slipped nimbly from Yan Gui’s grasp, and ducked low to sprint away.

As long as she could escape and find Chen Shenzhi, that guy would definitely be a bigger target than her.

That thought had barely formed when she caught Yang Bai’s horrified expression—followed immediately by excruciating pain in her chest.

Slowly, she looked down to see a bloody hand piercing through her chest, gripping her still-beating heart.

Yan Gui withdrew his hand without hesitation, crushing the warm heart in his grip. “Disgusting stench,” he said coldly.

    The smell of Chen Shenzhi.

Peony collapsed slowly under Yang Bai’s shocked and terrified gaze, tumbling down the sandy dune.

“Peony!” Yang Bai crawled on hands and knees, following the trail of blood to catch her and stop her fall. The sight of the gaping hole in her chest devastated him.

“What do I do... I’ll take you to a doctor!”

Struggling, he lifted her onto his back, desperate to find help, but all around them stretched only endless yellow sand and the whispering night wind.

For the first time, he hated his own helplessness and weakness; even his tears felt worthless.

“I’m not dead yet, stop crying!” Peony’s voice was faint as a breath. “Has your brother not shown up?”

Why was the only reliable person also unreliable?!

If he didn’t come soon, she would really die here!

Just then, the tunnel behind Yan Gui collapsed completely, taking large sections of the dunes down with it in a thunderous roar. Yet he only frowned, staring at his palm stained with Peony’s blood—blood carrying that unbearably repulsive alpha scent.

Before he could react, the blood seemed to come alive, carrying an overwhelmingly dominant presence that invaded his veins. Yan Gui tried to burn it away, but the moment their pheromones made contact, that foreign energy merged with his own, acting like a key that violently unlocked the final genetic shackles within the alpha.

A primal, untamed force surged from the deepest parts of his being, sweeping through his body like a tsunami. Every muscle, every bone felt shattered and remade under its power.

The excruciating, dismembering agony tore a beast-like roar from his throat. A powerful shockwave erupted from his body, howling like a wolf and flattening countless dunes around him. Sand flew everywhere, shrouding the sky like a raging dust storm.

Yang Bai immediately stood in front of Shaoyao.

Shaoyao, however, knew exactly what was happening—Yan Gui had absorbed the fusion project components from her blood and was about to evolve into a beast form!

Back then, out of so many fusion subjects, only Subject One and herself had survived. How could he mutate just by being stained with her blood?

Just how terrifying was Subject One, really?

Yang Bai looked back at Yan Gui, but what stood there was no longer human. As the sandstorm dissipated, a black wolf stood in its place.

He could hardly believe his eyes. The wolf was two stories high, with thick, pitch-black fur that was even denser than the night. Its eyes were blood-red as it threw its head back and howled. A scorching breath swept out, nearly turning the sand into glass!

    Even Senior Yan can shift?!

"Stop spacing out! Run!" Shaoyao popped another pill from her combat pack into her mouth. Ignoring the bloody hole in her chest, she transformed back into the white wolf, grabbed Yang Bai in her jaws, and sprinted away.

But she was too heavily injured; she was no match for the newly awakened Wolf King.

In the blink of an eye, the Wolf King had locked onto them, extending its sharp claws as if to crush an ant.

The white wolf had no strength left to dodge. Before death descended, she gritted her teeth, shielded Yang Bai beneath her body, and closed her eyes in resignation.

But the expected pain never came. Instead, she heard Yang Bai’s startled voice: "Brother?"

Under the moonlight, Shen Hui, having arrived somehow, held his blade with one hand to parry the Wolf King's claws. The ice shards scraped off the blade shimmered like crystalline sparks in the moonlight.

As his calm gaze met the Wolf King's crimson eyes, he felt an eerie sense of familiarity and caught the thick, scorching scent of fire-type pheromones.

An utterly absurd thought crossed his mind. He spoke with uncertainty: "Yan Gui?"

The Wolf King snorted hot breath from its nostrils, enveloping him in thick Alpha pheromones. Shen Hui slowly released his own pheromones to soothe him.

The familiar, cold pheromones of his mate slightly quelled his restless heat. He twitched his nose, seeking more, and impatiently began to lick the man with a rough, barbed tongue.

His already disheveled shirt was reduced to wet tatters in an instant. Fair skin appeared delectable under the moonlight, especially as the Wolf King's burning gaze slid down from the delicate collarbone...

Unable to endure it any longer, Shen Hui struck the Wolf King's snout with the hilt of his knife.

It didn't hurt—it felt like an itch—but it only made the wolf more parched.

Thus, he unhesitatingly pounced, pinning Shen Hui to the ground, pressing his entire body down to rub against him with his belly fur and lick him with his tongue.

    He wanted to devour him.

Shen Hui was suddenly tackled into the sea of sand. With the fine, cool sand at his back and the scorching, thick wolf fur in front of him, his whole body shuddered.

"Let go of me!" He pushed hard against the massive wolf head and scolded him in anger, only to have his arm pinned down by a huge wolf paw.

Yang Bai immediately moved to save him: "Brother!"

The Wolf King let out a wary, low growl, threatening anyone who intended to snatch away his mate.

Shen Hui gasped for breath, releasing a large amount of pheromones to calm the rampaging Wolf King: "You guys go first!"

Yang Bai looked at his brother, who was about to be "eaten," and then at the extremely weakened Shaoyao, hesitating.

"I'll be fine. Nathan will be here with reinforcements soon. Head for the rocky flats!"

The fact that his mate's attention was not on him caused the Wolf King extreme dissatisfaction, and he decided to show him who was boss.

"Once I get Shaoyao to the hospital, I'll bring people back to save you immediately!"

The white wolf, carrying Yang Bai, quickly disappeared into the night.

In the vast, cold, and lonely sea of sand, only the Wolf King and Shen Hui remained. The cold and scorching pheromones blended into a heady, fluid heat.

As the Wolf King tried to go further, Shen Hui pressed the blade against his throat and threatened: "Change back!"

The Wolf King tilted his head in confusion. Ignoring his brutal and bloodthirsty eyes, he actually looked somewhat silly and well-behaved.

Shen Hui remained unmoved, because the hard pressure prodding him was hot, large, and ferocious.

"Or I'll chop it off right now." Shen Hui pressed the knife a step closer.

But the Wolf King remained indifferent, completely unable to understand what he was saying.

Shen Hui stared at those vertical pupils for a long while; they showed no sign of changing.

He finally realized the problem: the current Yan Gui had no human reason, only animal instinct.

The Wolf King finally grew tired of the standoff. With one claw, he shattered the blade in Shen Hui's hand and pinned him completely beneath himself.

Author's Note: Shen Hui sits coldly opposite the Author, with a knife held to the Author's neck.

Author: I was wrong! But the little angels want to see it (and I love to see it too... *sound muted*).

    Shen Hui: Why a wolf?

Author: Ah? Because you turn into whatever fusion gene you come into contact with.

Yan Gui, sporting a wolf tail and ears, pushes open the door: "Darling, it's time for the next scene. Come quickly!"

Shen Hui stabs the knife into the table next to the Author's neck and goes to find his husband without looking back: "I like cats."

The Author, feeling bold in his mischief, makes a big move: "Senior Yan, Shen Hui says he likes felines, he doesn't love you!"

Yan Gui narrows his eyes and drags the man into the studio: "It's fine. I'll make sure he likes it."

The Author happily goes to start the next chapter.
