Chapter 59
by 侬无忧Chapter 59
Mother Huo watched him seething with rage, her heart turning cold.
Back when Gao Mingzhu had proposed splitting the family, Old Man Huo hadn’t said a single word, silently allowing it.
Why wasn’t he afraid of the family falling apart then?
Now that it came to his two biological sons from his first marriage, she only mentioned splitting up once, and he exploded.
It turned out that in his heart, she and her son were worth nothing.
What he cared about was always only those two sons from his first marriage.
Mother Huo hardened her heart and said bitterly, “Fine, then split! I’ll split off by myself. Who wants to stay here anyway?”
Old Man Huo pointed at the door and shouted, “Then get the hell out of this house!”
He couldn’t take it anymore!
Over this period, Gao Mingzhu and Mother Huo had turned the whole house upside down, and even Mother Huo, who had always been docile and obedient, no longer listened to him.
All his anger burst out at that moment.
But Mother Huo was even more furious than him: “Like hell I will! Why should I leave just because you tell me to?”
With that, she turned around, grabbed an axe from the corner, her eyes fierce: “I’ve worked hard in this family for so many years. Without me, would you have anything today? You want to kick me out? Fine, pay me compensation, build me a new house, or else no one's getting off easy!”
The Huo family members’ faces changed. Who dared to drive her away now? They backed off repeatedly, watching Mother Huo warily.
Old Man Huo was so angry he nearly fell over. “You crazy old hag!”
Mother Huo: “You old bastard!”
“Do you believe I’ll really beat you to death?” Old Man Huo made as if to charge at her.
Mother Huo immediately raised the axe, her eyes fixed on him.
If you dare come, I’ll dare to chop!
Old Man Huo charged halfway but was startled by the look in her eyes—
For a moment, he seemed to see the same ruthlessness in her that Gao Mingzhu had shown when she chopped at Lin Meilan.
He got scared and backed off, glared at Mother Huo, and turned away.
Mother Huo snorted coldly, sweeping her gaze around with the axe raised.
Lin Meilan ducked her head in fear. Huo Weicheng coughed awkwardly.
Sister-in-law Huo steeled herself and urged, “Mother, Mother, don’t be impulsive… If someone really gets hurt, you’ll go to jail…”
Mother Huo ignored her, but didn’t lose her temper. Still carrying the axe, she went into the kitchen, cracked three eggs, steamed a fragrant bowl of steamed egg, and took it back to her room to eat.
Lin Meilan watched with both anger and resentment, but didn’t dare to snatch it. She thought about taking a few eggs to cook, but when she opened the egg cupboard, there wasn’t a single egg left!
—Mother Huo had hidden all the eggs!
…Lin Meilan was about to go crazy!
Mother Huo didn’t care about them. She enjoyed her meal, washed the dishes afterward, then took a nice hot bath, warming her body and relaxing her muscles. She went back to her room, flopped onto the bed, and felt she'd never been so satisfied in her life.
If she'd known acting crazy was this much fun, she'd have done it ages ago!
Remembering something, she went back and locked the door from the inside.
Then she lay down to rest, but with all the racket outside, she didn’t really fall asleep.
Before long, Old Man Huo came and tried the door. Finding it locked, he cursed and left.
Late at night, the racket gradually died down.
Mother Huo thought Old Man Huo had gone to sleep in the main hall again. She didn't bother with him and started to doze off, her eyelids just closing.
Just then, she heard a sound at the door.
At first, she thought it was Old Man Huo coming back to the room, but listening closely, it wasn’t the bedroom door—it was the courtyard gate. Someone was going out!
Who goes out in the middle of the night?
Mother Huo's heart skipped a beat. She suddenly recalled Gao Mingzhu saying Old Man Huo had a mistress on the side.
She scrambled up, tiptoed to the window, parted the curtain a crack, and looked out—
Sure enough, a dark figure was quietly opening the courtyard gate, and even glancing back toward her room.
Mother Huo quickly drew back, and then she heard the soft click of the gate closing.
It was Old Man Huo! He had gone out!
Mother Huo immediately grabbed a flashlight, slipped on her shoes, and quietly pulled open the door. Thinking of something, she turned back, picked up the axe, and stealthily followed him.
…
Old Man Huo was feeling suffocated today. Lying on the lounge chair in the main hall, he thought about things and felt more and more suffocated. He was restless all over; he had to go out and blow off some steam.
He pressed his ear to the door for a moment, thinking Mother Huo was sound asleep, and then sneaked out.
Little did he know that Mother Huo was right behind him.
Only after he got outside did he dare turn on his flashlight, stumbling along the overgrown path.
Then he wound through the village from one end to the other and back.
Mother Huo followed far behind, couldn't help but wonder.
Was this old man going to see a lover, or was he stealing something?
Finally, he stopped under a window of a house, reached out and tapped the window frame, covering his mouth with the other hand and making a “coo-coo—coo-coo—” bird call.
Mother Huo was too far away to hear the details. She only saw Old Man Huo crouch, slip into the fenced yard, and sneak up to the door.
The next second, the door opened from inside. A woman poked her head out to look around. Old Man Huo pulled her inside, and the door closed behind them.
Hiding in the grass, Mother Huo trembled all over!
She recognized the woman’s face—it was Chen Fengniang, the widow of Lin Suanshu, the fourth son of the Lin family and the brigade accountant who had died last month!
It was Chen Fengniang!
How long has Lin Suanshu been gone? And he’s already messing around with Lin Suanshu's widow!
Mother Huo felt like a tidal wave hit her, her whole body going cold.
Then a surge of fury hit her. Without a second thought, she grabbed the axe and charged over!
In those days, every yard had a wicker fence. She tore through it in a few quick tugs and burst into the yard, letting out a blood-curdling shriek: "Huo Weiguo, you shameless old bastard! What are you doing sneaking around a widow's house in the dead of night? Huh? You old pervert! Get out here!"
"At your age, still sneaking around with women—have you no shame?"
"Can you even still get it up, you old thing? You make me sick! I must have been blind to marry you!"
"Come out! Get the hell out here!"
Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!
Mother Huo swung the axe and hacked at the door with all her might.
In the silent dead of night, the noise was especially terrifying.
Many neighbors were woken up, lights turned on, and heads poked out to see what was happening.
Inside the house, Old Man Huo, who had just wrapped his arms around Chen Fengniang and was about to get intimate, jumped in fright. The two of them instantly fell into a panic.
Old Man Huo fumbled to pull his pants up: "How the hell did that damned woman follow me?!"
"Which damn woman?" Chen Fengniang's hands trembled as she threw on her clothes. "Your damn wife?"
"Who else could it be!" Old Man Huo cursed.
"Then get out there and get rid of her! If she keeps making a scene like this, she'll draw a crowd—what do we do then!" Chen Fengniang pushed Old Man Huo urgently.
How could Old Man Huo dare to go out? Outside was a ruckus, flashlights waving all over the place—clearly, they had already attracted a crowd.
He only wanted to escape through the window. He shoved Chen Fengniang aside and rushed toward it.
But as soon as he reached the window, he caught sight of figures moving outside. The villagers drawn by the noise had surrounded the yard too!
It was over—there was really no way out now!
His legs gave way, and he collapsed onto the floor, his mind buzzing, leaving only a few words—completely done for!
