Chapter 1: Missing the Chance to Meet My Future Husband

"Yangyang, do you have time to come to Grandma's house now? Grandma has something to tell you."

Grandma Lu's voice on the phone was somewhat urgent, but also cautious.

Du Yang looked at his wristwatch; there was an hour left until his scheduled meeting with F.

F had been his top spender in live streaming for two years. Now that Du Yang had fallen from grace and become a social outcast, F still stuck by him.

F was the one who suggested meeting today. Du Yang agreed without hesitation; after all, he had nothing left to lose.

But now Grandma Lu was calling him, and she sounded very urgent.

As if sensing Du Yang's hesitation, Grandma Lu said again, "Yangyang, Grandma has something important to tell you. You must come."

"Alright, Grandma Lu, wait for me a moment. It'll take me an hour to get there from school." Du Yang did not refuse Grandma Lu.

Grandma Lu was a kind and friendly old lady who liked him a lot. Although they had only met a few times, Du Yang genuinely liked her.

"Okay, Grandma will wait for you at the Lu residence."

After hanging up, Du Yang changed his clothes, put on a mask and a cap, and prepared to go out.

He didn't live in the dorms; because of his live streaming, he'd rented a place off campus.

He was six months away from graduation, but he had already been expelled from school.

A month ago, he was a streamer with millions of fans.

Now, photos of him showering and getting dressed were everywhere, and rumors that he had slept with big spenders to get ahead were spreading like wildfire.

From a streamer with millions of fans to having his account banned and becoming despised by everyone, it took just ten days.

In the end, only F stuck by him.

Getting into a taxi, Du Yang sent a message to F, telling F that he was going to Grandma Lu's house and would only be able to meet him afterwards.

F had always been easygoing. Even though he was the top spender, he never asked Du Yang for anything and never gave him a hard time.

This time, F agreed quickly, telling him not to rush.

The taxi raced through the cold wind. Du Yang lowered his eyes and touched the scar under his left wristband. It still hurt a little.

A vivid red scar stood out. Last night, he had unconsciously hurt himself again.

Du Yang blinked hard, looking up, holding back the tears that were about to spill.

At the Lu family villa, the previous few times Du Yang had come to see Grandma Lu, there were many servants in the house. Today, only Aunt Wang took him upstairs.

"Is Grandma Lu the only one home today?" Du Yang asked casually as he followed Aunt Wang.

Aunt Wang glanced sideways at Du Yang with a blank expression as she went upstairs.

"The old lady said she had important matters to discuss with Mr. Du, so she sent all the family and servants away."

Du Yang couldn't help but wonder: what important matter made Grandma Lu so cautious as to send everyone away?

"Madam, Mr. Du is here." Aunt Wang stood at the door without entering.

Grandma Lu sat at the head of the bed with a small blanket over her lap. Seeing Du Yang, her eyes full of tenderness, she beckoned him over.

Du Yang took off his mask and cap, placed them on the table, and walked over and said politely, "Grandma Lu."

Aunt Wang had already closed the door; only Grandma Lu and Du Yang were in the room.

"Yangyang, call me Grandma." Grandma Lu's wrinkled hand grasped Du Yang's, her eyes already glistening with tears.

Du Yang was taken aback, but he called out "Grandma."

"Oh, my good grandson. Grandma has known all along that you are my good grandson Yangyang."

Tears streamed down her wrinkled face. After saying this, Grandma Lu was sobbing uncontrollably, the hand holding Du Yang's trembling.

"Grandma, you... what's wrong? What happened? Can I help you?"

Seeing Grandma Lu crying so sorrowfully, Du Yang's heart ached, and his vision grew blurry without him realizing.

Grandma Lu wiped her tears carelessly with a handkerchief, then reached out to open the bedside drawer and took out a document.

"Yangyang, open it and take a look." Grandma Lu had a smile on her face, but her tears hadn't stopped.

Du Yang took the document; it clearly read "Paternity Test Report."

A thought flashed through his mind. Du Yang immediately flipped to the last page.

The conclusion on the report was that Lu Ting was his biological father.

"Yangyang, Grandma secretly took your hair and blood to run this test. You are my good grandson, Lu Yang."

Grandma Lu hugged Du Yang, her quiet sobs turning into loud weeping.

"Gra...ndma..." Du Yang choked out, "Grandma."

Lu Debao had been extremely cruel to him; Du Yang had also suspected that he was not Lu Debao's biological son.

He never expected that he wasn't Lu Debao's son at all, but a son of the Lu family.

"Grandma, how did I get lost?" Du Yang sat on the edge of the bed, hugging Grandma Lu, and asked in a low voice.

"It's all that bitch Qin Yue! I saw long ago that she was no good!"

Grandma Lu leaned back a little, holding Du Yang's arms with both hands, her gaze firm. "Yangyang, Grandma had already sent the paternity test report to your brother Jin'an. He will be back soon."

    "Mm."

However, before Du Yang could fully feel this joy, a pungent smell of smoke filled the room.

And the smell grew stronger. Sensing something wrong, Du Yang immediately got up to open the door.

As soon as his hand touched the doorknob, he was scalded and jerked his hand back. Du Yang's heart sank. He wrapped his sleeve around the doorknob, pressed it down, and pulled the door open.

The moment he opened the door, blazing flames rushed in.

Du Yang only saw a flash of red and felt a wave of intense heat. In that instant, the fire had spread to the carpet inside the room.

The carpet burned rapidly as if soaked in oil.

    "Grandma, fire!"

Du Yang hurriedly turned around, took two steps back to the bed, picked up Grandma Lu, and ducked into the bathroom.

He placed Grandma Lu in the bathtub, turned on the hot water, and at the same time grabbed several towels from the bathroom cabinet.

After wetting the towels, he stuffed them along the bottom of the bathroom door. After that, Du Yang went back to the bathtub.

"Grandma, don't be afraid. Someone should find us soon," Du Yang comforted her, holding her hand.

Suddenly remembering his phone in his pocket, Du Yang quickly took it out to call the fire department, but there was no signal at all, as if they were completely isolated.

"Yangyang, it's Grandma's fault for bringing you here. It's gotta be that bitch Qin Yue!"

Grandma Lu grabbed Du Yang's hand tightly, her eyes full of pain and reluctance.

"Grandma, don't worry. Maybe help is already here."

Du Yang comforted her with these words, but he felt less and less sure.

The fire inside was too strong; black smoke was pouring in through the door cracks.

The only window in the bathroom was also blocked. Du Yang was sure this was a premeditated murder.

The small bathroom quickly filled with black smoke. Du Yang crouched by the bathtub, and his last consciousness faded into the smoke.

When Du Yang woke up again, he was standing in the courtyard of the Lu family villa.

Two bodies lay on the ground. One was held by Lu Jin'an, who was sobbing bitterly.

The other body was cradled by a handsome, elegant man in a dark suit.

The man's face was grim, betraying no emotion. His slender fair fingers were smudged with black ash, and he held a handkerchief, wiping the black ash from the corpse's face.

    Du Yang: "?"

Is this how they pick up bodies? So... gently, lovingly?
