Chapter 27: Grandma Lu Is a Bit Strange

Fu Yan finished asking and stared intently at the young man, not blinking, not missing a single expression on his face.

Du Yang lowered his eyelids, and his thick lashes trembled violently. He bit his lower lip until it turned white, then released it.

The young man pursed his lips, breathing lightly. After a moment, he looked up, a hint of a smile in his eyes.

"Chairman Fu, how would a poor student like me know someone like Grandma Lu?" Du Yang paused, tilted his head, and looked up at the man. "Or do you, Chairman Fu, think I’m capable enough to know Grandma Lu?"

"Mm, you're something." Fu Yan's tone was tinged with helplessness.

This kid had clearly panicked a moment ago, but he wouldn't force him to reveal it. He'd find out later.

Just then, his phone rang. Fu Yan took it out of his pocket—it was a call from Lu Jin'an.

Fu Yan swiped the screen, hit the speakerphone button, then casually placed the phone on the shelf by the sink, then spoke flatly. "Old Lu, how's Grandma?"

Hearing this, Du Yang clenched his fists, standing still and listening quietly.

"Old Fu, Grandma's awake. The doctor said there's nothing wrong—just a sudden dizzy spell." Lu Jin'an's voice was clearly joyful. "Nothing serious, just letting you know so you don't have to call and ask again."

Fu Yan washed his hands, then picked up the towel Du Yang had just dried his hands with, slowly and deliberately wiping his own.

"I'm relieved that Grandma Lu is fine. I'll go visit Grandma at the hospital tomorrow."

Hearing that Grandma was okay, the weight that had been on Du Yang's heart all afternoon finally lifted. His whole body relaxed.

He couldn't imagine what he would do if something had happened to Grandma.

Fu Yan chatted a bit more on the phone, then hung up. His gaze fell on the young man, who was clearly much more relaxed.

After all, he was just a kid—couldn't even fake it well.

"Du Yang, it's already six o'clock. Aren't you going to get some food?" Fu Yan urged.

"Ah… I'm going now." Du Yang had lost track of time. If he waited any longer, there wouldn't be much left in the employee cafeteria.

Fu Yan stood by his desk, looked at the coffee spilled on it, rubbed his brow, and carried the tray to the break room himself to wash the cups.

    The next day at noon.

    -

Fu Yan took advantage of his lunch break to visit Grandma Lu. Before stepping into the elevator, he asked Du Yang, who was mopping the floor, again: "Du Yang, I'm going to see Grandma Lu now. Really not coming?"

Du Yang straightened up, leaning on the mop handle, a faint smile on his lips as he politely declined: "Chairman Fu, you and Assistant Chen go ahead. I don't want to be a bother. Besides, I'm not that close with Grandma Lu."

"Mm, see you this afternoon." Fu Yan didn't insist. He stepped into the elevator with Chen Miao.

This kid was so worried about Grandma Lu yesterday—why wasn't he coming to see her today?

Had he misread things last night?

Probably not. He trusted his judgment.

It was almost like the kid was deliberately keeping his distance from Grandma Lu.

Seeing his boss frown, Chen Miao assumed Du Yang's refusal had made his boss unhappy.

    Chen Miao wondered to himself.

They had kissed yesterday—why so distant today?

Had the boss lost control and forced a kiss on Du Yang yesterday?

Chen Miao tightened his grip on the gift bag, as if he had discovered something huge.

The boss was way too impatient—this would only push Du Yang away even more.

He needed to remind the boss.

"Chairman Fu, Du Yang is quite sensitive. You need to take things slow." Chen Miao swallowed hard, thinking he had made his point clearly enough.

Fu Yan looked up and glanced at Chen Miao, nodding in agreement. Then he said, "Yeah, I do need to take it slow."

He'd give Du Yang more time to tell him the secret on his own.

He wanted to know more about Du Yang.

Chen Miao's eyes went wide in surprise.

Was the boss really this open to advice?

If the boss couldn't win Du Yang over, then it would be a crime.

If he had only listened to advice back then, he wouldn't have been dumped by his ex-girlfriend.

When the elevator reached the basement level, the two silently got into the black Maybach, each lost in their own thoughts. Chen Miao automatically took the passenger seat.

Meanwhile, Du Yang stowed the mop, changed into his black winter jacket in the utility room, slung his backpack over his shoulder, and left the company.

He couldn't see Grandma yet—there were bigger things to handle.

Now that he had some money, he could buy a tiny camera and find a chance to go back and install it.

His plan was to rile Du Debao up by not giving him money. Without money, Du Debao would surely go running to Qin Yue.

As long as they interacted, he'd find something to work with.

Fu Yan, accompanied by Chen Miao, pushed open Grandma Lu's hospital room door.

Grandma Lu was leaning against the hospital bed, wearing reading glasses, looking at her phone. When she saw Fu Yan come in, she smiled and motioned for him to come sit.

    -

When she realized it was Fu Yan's assistant who had come, a flicker of disappointment appeared in her eyes, but vanished in a flash.

Lu Jin'an stood up, giving his seat to Fu Yan, and then motioned for Chen Miao to sit on the sofa.

Grandma Lu took off her reading glasses and looked at Fu Yan with a kind expression. "Xiao Yan, you're so busy, yet you still come to see me. I know you came yesterday, even though I wasn't awake—I could hear you."

"Grandma, I always have time to visit you," Fu Yan said. "Grandpa asked about your health on the phone not long ago."

"You're such a thoughtful child." Grandma Lu smiled happily. "Is your grandpa doing well?"

After chatting with Fu Yan for a while, Grandma Lu brought the topic back to her hospitalization yesterday. "You brought someone with you yesterday. He didn't come today?"

"Grandma, his name is Du Yang. He works part-time at my company. He had something to do today, so he couldn't come."

Fu Yan looked at Grandma Lu, who didn't seem to know Du Yang.

"I didn't wake up yesterday, but I could hear. That child has a nice voice and cares about me."

A hint of expectation crept into Grandma Lu's tone. "Next time you come to see me, remember to bring that child along. I'd like to meet him."

Fu Yan nodded. "Alright, Grandma Lu. I'll bring him next time for sure."

Lu Jin'an looked at his grandmother with confusion, feeling she was a bit strange after waking up.

She took his hand and asked about Du Yang. How would he know? He only told his grandmother that Du Yang was Fu Yan's employee, and probably someone Fu Yan liked.

Aunt Wang, who had always been taking care of her at home, wanted to come to the hospital, but she refused and switched to Lin Ma.

By the time Fu Yan returned from the hospital, Du Yang had already returned to the company.

Seeing Fu Yan come in, Du Yang promptly went to the break room, brewed a cup of tea, and carried it into Fu Yan's office.

This time, Du Yang didn't hold back. He placed the teacup on the desk and asked openly and directly, "Chairman Fu, is Grandma Lu doing well?"

Fu Yan looked up from the documents in his hand, looked at the eager young man, and then said cautiously.

"Yesterday, Grandma Lu heard you talking. She asked me to bring you to see her next time. She really likes you."
