Chapter 89
byChapter 89
Feng Chen, with Black Lion, had reached the lowest level of Haiyun Tower.
This floor was vast, almost half the size of a basketball court. Standing in the center of the tower, Feng Chen looked around blankly. Chu Shi and his men, panting heavily, arrived at the staircase entrance.
"Run, keep running. Let's see what tricks you can pull off now," one of the subordinates angrily taunted Feng Chen.
Chu Shi, with a sinister gaze, took off his beast fur coat and flexed the joints of his metallic arm, slowly approaching the center of the tower amid clicking sounds.
A grey wolf materialized at his feet, staring at Black Lion with eyes as cold as Chu Shi's.
Black Lion emitted a menacing growl, its body slightly lowered, ready to attack.
All the subordinates, along with their quantum beasts, followed suit.
"Kid, let me tell you, no one dares to make a fool of me, Chu Shi, especially not twice," Chu Shi extended two metal fingers and waved them in the air, "I really hadn't planned on killing you, but now I'm angry."
"If you had just handed over the password box willingly, maybe it would have improved my mood," Chu Shi said, shaking his head.
Feng Chen watched them silently, slowly retreating step by step.
"Enough talk, Chief. Let's just grab this brat. If he won't talk, we kill him," a subordinate said viciously, his yellow mongoose beside him drooling incessantly.
As they advanced step by step, Feng Chen retreated, until his back hit the wall, leaving no room to move back.
"You've got nowhere to run, hand it over," Chu Shi said, looking at Feng Chen's pale face, and slowly extended his hand.
Just then, Chu Shi saw the previously fearful young man suddenly calm down and curve his lips into a mocking smile directed at him.
A chill ran through Chu Shi's heart, and just as he internally uttered a warning, he saw the youth swiftly press a button on the wall beside him.
"Run!"
Before he could finish speaking, there was a thunderous rumbling beneath their feet as the floor split open, revealing a dark, murky pool of water below.
The floor slid apart too quickly, and the base of the tower was too vast. They had only managed a few steps towards the edge before splashing into the water.
As Feng Chen pressed the button, he grabbed onto an iron bar on the wall, and with the tower's half-foot-wide cement ledge, he was perfectly positioned on it.
The people who fell into the water swam towards the shore, but Feng Chen continuously hurled psychic energy to hinder their progress and pressed the wall button again, intending to trap them beneath the partition doors.
The two door panels retracted with a crash, closing halfway in an instant. Chu Shi, realizing the danger, instantly raised his metallic arm and shot a steel claw towards the cement ledge.
The steel claw lodged into the cement, jamming one of the closing doors.
Black Lion lunged at the spot where the door was jammed, but Chu Shi's grey wolf leaped high to block it. The two quantum beasts collided mid-air, clawing at each other before falling into the water and continuing the assault.
Feng Chen continued to unleash psychic energy towards the water's surface, but then heard two gunshots.
His heightened senses alerted him to the bullets' trajectory, and he leaned back just in time, as the bullets embedded into the wall above his head, sending stone chips flying.
Ah Dai surfaced, half of her face wrapped in bandages, her eye visible beneath the mask, continually shooting at Feng Chen.
Feng Chen dodged on the narrow cement ledge, but his psychic energy attacks did not cease.
The subordinates who had fallen into the water swam towards the edge, cursing continuously.
"Thinks he can drown us, huh? Just wait till I get up there and deal with him."
Suddenly, one of the subordinates screamed: "Damn, something bit my leg, I swear—"
Before he could finish his sentence, he abruptly sank into the water, disappearing without a trace. As the others tried to pull him out, the water surface churned violently, indicating something emerging from below.
"Get out of the water! There's something in there!" Chu Shi saw it clearly: many shadowy figures were swimming around, many missing arms or legs, "It's zombies."
Following Chu Shi's words, everyone desperately swam to the shore, while their quantum beasts pushed them forward.
While dodging Ah Dai's bullets, Feng Chen sent psychic energy into the water, preventing them from reaching the shore. Chu Shi had no choice but to create psychic shields to block these attacks.
Feng Chen remembered encountering a zombie in the water when he went to the underground settlement for Li Stone. If Haiyun Tower had a temperature control system, then the water beneath wouldn't freeze.
When they escaped Haiyun Tower before, Lin Feng had closed the isolation doors, trapping thousands of zombies below. Since zombies don't die and the water wasn't frozen, Feng Chen led Chu Shi's group here, planning to trap them with the partition doors and let the zombies deal with them.
"There are so many zombies underwater, they're catching up, quick, put up psychic shields to block them!" a panicked subordinate in the water shouted.
"It's useless, psychic shields can only block psychic attacks, not zombies."
"Then kill them, use psychic energy to kill them."
Zombies swarmed from all directions underwater, and several subordinates immediately launched psychic attacks to kill the approaching zombies.
Their quantum beasts also dived into the water to attack the zombies.
Feng Chen didn't stop his assault, launching psychic energy like a rain of arrows at them, forcing Chu Shi to continuously block and deflect these attacks.
After killing the zombies around them, they realized more and more were surrounding them, the water boiling like hot water with zombies breaking the surface, howling and lunging at them.
The foremost subordinate, pushed by his yellow mongoose, was about to reach the shore. Ignoring the others still surrounded, he reached for the cement ledge.
Just as his fingers were about to touch the cement ledge, a psychic force from Feng Chen struck his wrist. Simultaneously, a hand grabbed his ankle, and a zombie burst from the water beside him, biting fiercely towards his ear.
The yellow mongoose sentinel screamed in agony as half of his face was instantly drenched in blood. He quickly used his psychic energy to kill the zombie biting his ear, but instantly, three or four more emerged, opened their mouths wide, and dragged him into the water.
The water churned with red waves as the yellow mongoose gradually disappeared from the surface.
"Don't rush to the shore," Chu Shi barked urgently. "Deal with the zombies around first, I'll block that kid's attacks."
But the zombies were too numerous, especially in the water. Despite their efforts to kill the surrounding ones, more zombies continuously surged from below. Two subordinates were eventually dragged under.
Feng Chen relentlessly attacked the water, his psychic energy falling like locusts wherever they moved, blocking their path.
He unleashed his psychic energy without reserve, creating a net that trapped Chu Shi's group in the water.
"Kill the zombies first, we can only get to shore after clearing them."
"We can't kill them all, they're endless. This way, let's get out here."
"No use, that kid blocked the way again, we need to deal with him first."
"I'm busy killing zombies, can't spare a hand..."
Though Feng Chen successfully trapped them in the water, his psychic energy was rapidly draining, causing discomfort in his chest and dizziness. But he dared not pause or conserve his energy, continuing his relentless and fierce assault.
He had to prevent them from reaching the shore at all costs; otherwise, he and Yan Bubu couldn't dare return to the research facility.
In this weather, leaving the facility meant certain death. With no way out, he decided to gamble and eliminate Chu Shi's group here.
Zombies in the water beside him were also reaching for his ankles, some even leaping out towards him.
He had to momentarily pause his psychic attack to fend off the zombies with his dagger.
With each swift movement, zombies howled and fell back into the water.
However, Chu Shi's group took this opportunity to clear the surrounding zombies, inching closer to the shore.
Ah Dai, blinded in one eye by Bi Nunu and with a weakened spirit, couldn't use her psychic energy and kept firing at Feng Chen.
Feng Chen struggled to cope, needing to fend off zombies, dodge Ah Dai's bullets, and continue blocking their way to shore with his psychic energy.
As the group neared the shore, Feng Chen's head grew increasingly heavy, his vision starting to blur as if he was slipping into a trance.
Knowing he couldn't afford this, he focused on closing the partition door quickly.
Hei Shi, understanding his intent, repeatedly lunged at the jammed door, but the grey wolf clung to it tenaciously, striking and biting, preventing Hei Shi from reaching it.
Both quantum beasts were battered, emitting black smoke from their wounds.
Given the reliance of quantum beasts on their master's psychic energy, the grey wolf should have been stronger than Hei Shi. However, Hei Shi fought fiercely, matching the grey wolf blow for blow, yet unable to advance further.
A sudden burst of familiar psychic energy surged into Feng Chen's mind, so familiar that his psychic domain offered no resistance, allowing it direct entry.
His mind cleared instantly, the distorted scenery snapping back to normal, and the heaviness in his chest swept away.
Feng Chen's heart skipped a beat.
It was Yan Bubu!
Yan Bubu had reached this floor!
As Ah Dai aimed her gun at Feng Chen, ready to pull the trigger, a familiar black shadow flashed at the edge of her vision.
The round black shadow filled her with recognition and intense fear. Its speed was too fast, like lightning, leaving her no time to react. Her world plunged into darkness, all light extinguished.
Blood trickled down from beneath her half-bandaged face and the other half covered with a silver mask.
Bi Nunu bit her wrist fiercely, blood spurting out like a fountain, her gun falling into the water with a plaintive splash, followed by her agonized scream.
Zombies and quantum beasts together stirred the water into churning waves, resembling a boiling cauldron. Psychic energies continuously struck the water surface, creating towering waves, with zombies being thrown up and limbs scattering in all directions.
Suddenly, three zombies leaped out of the water towards Feng Chen, causing huge splashes.
The narrow cement edge limited his movements, and his dagger alone couldn't fend off the simultaneous zombie attack. Feng Chen had to redirect some of his psychic energy to deal with the zombies, helplessly watching Chu Shi and his men swim towards the shore unobstructed.
At that moment, Bi Nunu intervened, scratching and clawing at them, causing two more of Chu Shi's men to scream and clutch their eyes.
With Bi Nunu's intervention, the struggle at the water's edge intensified, adding to the chaos and confusion.
The attackers were forced to pause, cursing loudly as they grappled with Bi Nunu and the relentless horde of zombies.
"Bi Nunu, go remove the steel claw jamming the door!"
Feng Chen gripped the neck of one lunging zombie with his left hand, while his right hand wielded a knife, decapitating another. Concurrently, his psychic energy strangled several zombies in the water before him.
But more zombies were crowding around him in the water, scrambling to climb up the cement ledge.
Bi Nunu attempted to remove the steel claw but had to resume its attack as the group began swimming towards the shore, relentlessly tearing at them to prevent their advance.
At that moment, Yan Bubu appeared at the staircase, quickly running onto the cement ledge.
He had been hiding behind the stairs, helping Feng Chen organize his psychic domain. Seeing Bi Nunu occupied, he decided to act himself.
Spotting the half-closed door and the steel claw wedged in the gap, he ran towards it, then quickly turned back, picking up a rock the size of a bun from the ground and clutching it as he ran forward again.
Splashing water soaked his head and face, blurring his vision and making the slippery cement ledge treacherous, nearly causing him to slip into the adjoining water pool.
He had barely taken a few steps when a zombie, with dark, cyanotic skin and bulging black eyes, emerged in front of him, mouth agape and lunging straight at him.
Despite being mentally prepared, Yan Bubu couldn't help but scream in terror.
Whoosh! Whoosh! Whoosh!
The screen in his mind lit up, showing him ducking to avoid the zombie's lunge, then surging forward two steps.
Having already confronted the brown bear, he knew the power of the large screen image and instantly squatted down, ready to charge forward.
At this moment, Chushi also saw Yan Bubu. As a zombie howled and lunged at him from the water, he swung his metal arm without looking, severing the zombie's neck with a blade, its head falling into the water.
He then launched a psychic spike at Yan Bubu's back.
Feng Chen saw Yan Bubu emerge from the stairway and was terrified, his heart almost leaping out of his mouth. Seeing Chushi's psychic attack targeting Yan Bubu, he quickly erected a shield to intercept Chushi’s attack.
Binunu, which had been tearing apart people in the water, suddenly stopped, stepped on the heads of zombies emerging from the water, and leaped onto the concrete edge in a few bounds.
At that moment, Yan Bubu squatted down tightly against the wall, curling into a ball. The zombie lunging at him missed, stumbling forward and accidentally impaling itself on Chushi's psychic spike, its head skewered, neutralizing the spike.
Binunu, initially charging towards Yan Bubu, stopped abruptly upon seeing he was unharmed, its slender feet scraping against the ground and sparking.
However, it didn't pause for long and, like a cannonball, turned and charged back towards the water's surface.
"Binunu, be careful, run if you can't win..." Yan Bubu shouted while running.
Binunu, who had just bitten an ear off one of the men, heard Yan Bubu's words and became even more furious. After tearing off a piece of the man's earlobe, it turned and bit another man's nose.
Yan Bubu's short legs worked furiously, dodging the claws reaching out from the water. His small body clumsily jumped and ducked, each time narrowly but skillfully avoiding the zombies' lunges.
Feng Chen continued to launch psychic attacks at the people in the water while killing the zombies that approached him. Each time he glanced at Yan Bubu, he was frightened, almost getting bitten by the attacking zombies.
"Go back! Get back!" he yelled loudly at Yan Bubu.
Yan Bubu, dodging zombies as he ran forward, responded loudly, "Don’t be afraid... I have magic now, my magic is working again... Brother, I can help you... This time, it's big TV magic..."
Yan Bubu finally reached the door stuck in the jam, lying on the ground, he picked up a stone and started smashing the steel claw.
Bang! Bang!
Although the steel claw's teeth were firmly embedded in the concrete edge and Yan Bubu's strength was not great, the repeated smashing with the stone caused chunks of concrete around the claw to crumble and fall.
Seeing the situation turning bad, Chushi, disregarding the zombies in the water, sent several psychic spikes towards Yan Bubu, while the grey wolf abandoned Black Lion and pounced towards Yan Bubu.
Chushi's psychic power, brimming with lethal intent, surged towards Yan Bubu like a massive wave. He aimed to enclose Yan Bubu from all sides, leaving no room to dodge, intending a fatal strike.
Feng Chen, sensing Chushi's attention on Yan Bubu, immediately mobilized all his psychic power, creating a shield around Yan Bubu before Chushi could launch his attack.
Chushi, a Class A Sentinel, exerted immense pressure even before his power reached them. Feng Chen involuntarily wanted to retract his psychic power and flee, feeling a growing sense of fear.
Knowing the disparity in their sentinel levels, not only in strength but also psychological suppression, Feng Chen struggled to maintain his shield, layering his psychic power over it.
However, he soon felt Yan Bubu soothingly and safely reorganizing his psychic domain, dispelling the fear and bolstering his courage.
Yan Bubu, lying on the ground, saw zombies swimming towards him from the corner of his eye. Although he was screaming in fear, his hands didn't stop, continuously striking the steel claw with the stone.
Bang!
Two psychic forces collided, shaking the tower, and the resulting airflow surged outward, creating towering waves. Some zombies were thrown high into the air, then fell back with the water.
Bunu was also flung out, flailing its thin limbs in the air. The Black Lion leaped high and caught it mid-air.
Inside the shield, Yan Bubu was spared from the impact, but he had to quickly dodge a zombie head flying towards him like a spinning football.
The head hit the wall behind him and then plopped into the water.
Feng Chen's shield held against the impact, but the pressure still wounded him. As the water shot skyward fell back down, he swayed, blood trickling from the corner of his mouth.
Yan Bubu was drenched, his eyes stung so badly he could barely open them.
He raised a rock high and brought it down forcefully, shouting with each strike, "Come on! Little Red Flower! Come on!"
The steel claw gradually descended, hanging precariously on the concrete edge. Yan Bubu lifted the rock again and finally yelled the spell that had once filled him with pride and disappointment.
"Ah Wu Beng Ga Ada Wusiya!"
With a snap, the steel claw and a chunk of concrete fell into the water, and the partition door burst forward, beginning to close.
