Chapter 81: Yi Yang, I Dislike You.
byChapter 81: Yi Yang, I Dislike You.
It started raining outside, and the rabbit could tolerate strong winds but not rain and wind together. The damp, cold air sneaked in through her neck, sleeves, and ankles, dissipating the warmth accumulated in the car.
Shivering from the car to the restaurant, Le Yan felt exhausted. Yi Yang considered buying her a knitted hat on the spot, as her nose and ears were red and pitifully cold.
"Le Yan!" Yan Jinjin hurried after them and caught up with a few quick steps. Still shaken from the police station the other day, she looked cool and dashing today, seemingly in good spirits.
"Sister Jinjin," greeted Le Yan, admiring how she always wore a different necklace each time they met. "They're all so unique, handmade by you. I'm really envious; I can't do that!"
"Did Yan Jiansheng come looking for you afterwards?" asked Yi Yang.
"No, he hasn't come looking for me recently. Officer Yi, I really want to thank you." Yan Jinjin, usually carefree, felt much more uneasy than Le Yan at this moment.
After all, she had often badmouthed him in front of Le Yan when he wasn't around... Feeling guilty, she added, "Officer Yi, about that money—"
"Let's not talk about that today. Let's order first. Le Le was saying she was hungry on the way here."
After ordering, Le Yan went to the restroom. Yan Jinjin, too embarrassed to sit face-to-face with Yi Yang, also excused herself to the restroom. Not to use it, but to wait outside for Le Yan and then take her to a glass terrace nearby for a private chat.
"Le Yan, about what I said before, I take it all back. Your husband is the best man I've ever met in my life!"
"Ah?"
Le Yan thought she was just overwhelmed by the meal, not realizing that if she were in Yan Jinjin's shoes, she would have felt nervous about such an invitation too. But the person inviting was the gentle Yi Yang, so there was no need to worry.
"Sister Jinjin, Yi Yang knows you're a good friend of mine, it's alright!"
"It's not about that." Yan Jinjin hadn't told Le Yan about her father's issues, assuming Officer Yi hadn't either. She had thought things through before coming today, ready to apologize and clear things up.
"Le Yan, my dad's a gambler. Even before that day, he often took money from me. But this month I didn't want to give him any. I ignored his messages and calls. Then he, unable to pay off a debt, came looking for me in a rage..."
"How much?"
"Five... over five million." Yan Jinjin said, "Usury. The interest compounded. I have no idea how he racked up so much debt..."
"Five million!" Le Yan's mouth hung open in shock.
Even if she emptied all her possessions, she couldn't pay off such a huge sum...
Le Yan asked, "Does that mean he might come to hit you again? Ask you for money?"
"Probably not." Yan Jinjin looked down, a bit embarrassed, "Le Yan, Officer Yi said this situation is grounds for a lawsuit, and he's willing to help me find a lawyer. But no matter how awful Yan Jiansheng is, he's still my father. If I really send him to prison, I don't know how I'd face our relatives, especially my grandmother who loves me the most; she might hate me. So, Officer Yi lent me a large sum of money. I might not be able to pay it back soon... but I will, for sure!"
"Is that enough, Sister Jinjin? I can lend you some too."
"No need, it's enough." Yan Jinjin's face showed mixed emotions of worry and relief. These past few days, her heart had been in a state of suspense, never feeling grounded. She said, "There's one more thing, Le Yan, don't be misled by what I told you that day. There must be many things I got wrong..."
Later, Yan Jinjin had several conversations with that Officer Bai. When discussing whether Officer Yi was a 'jerk', Bai Wei laughed for a full ten minutes. She then realized that the so-called jerk behavior was just part of solving a case.
She had only heard one side of the story from Le Yan and had been misled...
"Le Yan, that guy called Guangguang is not a love rival at all, but a societal scum involved in forbidden experiments!"
"What?"
—
When they returned to the table, the dishes were all served. Yi Yang was picking bones out of the fish for Le Yan, and had already picked several pieces, placing them on a small round plate. Le Yan, either too hungry or having lost her appetite, ate slowly and not much.
"Officer Yi..." Yan Jinjin started to apologize.
"No need for formalities when I'm off duty, just call me by my name." Yi Yang smiled, a stark contrast to his serious demeanor at the station. "During the time you were at the zoo, Le Le told me how much you took care of him. This meal is my belated thanks."
"No, it's just colleagues helping each other, as it should be." Seizing the moment, Yan Jinjin honestly confessed how she had instigated Le Yan that day, feeling guilty with every word and not daring to hide anything.
Yi Yang listened attentively, nodding occasionally, always composed like a seasoned police officer. Yan Jinjin took a sip of cold water, "I was afraid Le Yan would be wronged, he looks... naïve and easily deceived." Kind of clumsy.
"I understand your concern and can appreciate why you did it." Yi Yang served Le Yan some vegetables, noticing his lack of appetite and got him a bowl of lightly sweetened rice porridge.
He said, "I'm Le Yan's boyfriend, and you're his closest friend. Regardless, I think it's important that we don't harbor any prejudices or misunderstandings. It puts Le Yan in an uncomfortable position in the middle."
"Yes, I understand, that's also what I mean," said Yan Jinjin. "It's my bad habit, always advising people to break up rather than stay together..." Her attitude of admitting fault was as sincere as if she were under interrogation, earnestly confessing and promising never to repeat it.
Yi Yang suddenly understood why she got along well with Yue Yan; their personalities were similar in many ways.
The meal was generally harmonious. Yi Yang drove Ban Jinjin home himself. Yue Yan's smile was exceptionally bright when she got out of the car, but once she was inside, her expression could no longer be maintained.
"Yi Yang, I hate you!"
During the meal, Yi Yang noticed that Rabbit was upset. He couldn't guess what it was about, focused on driving all the way home. Once there, he carried the sulking Rabbit to the elevator, saying, "You just take advantage of my good temper. A simple 'I hate you' and that's it. Do you want me to guess why you're mad? Do rabbits also like making others guess?"
"I don't like it." Yue Yan sat cross-legged on the sofa, staring at Yi Yang moving around the living room, "Husband, I want to talk to you."
"Okay, wait a moment." Yi Yang had a phone call to return and had already walked into the study.
Rabbit on the sofa immediately followed, unabashedly eavesdropping on his phone call, breathing quietly, afraid of missing anything.
"Old Yi, Zhao Jiang's first trial is the day after tomorrow. Lei Ge left the documents on your desk," said Bai Wei while eating, making smacking sounds...
"Hmm, I'll look at it tomorrow."
Yue Yan listened intently, tilting his head. Yi Yang simply let him sit on his lap, steadied him, and continued, "If you're still at the office, can you deliver the document on my desk to Director Zhou?"
Rabbit's ears perked up, 'The document on the desk'?
Could it be... a resignation application?
Bai Wei's smacking sounds could be amplified, "Eating barbecue. If you'd told me five minutes earlier, I would have been there. You can deliver it yourself tomorrow."
Bai Wei called just to say one thing. After hanging up, Yue Yan looked into Yi Yang's eyes so intently that he could count every eyelash.
Yi Yang lifted him up, letting him stand on his own, "So, what does my wife suddenly want to talk about?"
Rabbit paused for several seconds, silently switching his mood. When he finally found it, he repeated, "Yi Yang, I hate you!"
"Can you give me a hint? What exactly did I do to make you hate me?"
"I already know what's going on with Guang Guang. You can't hide it from me anymore!" Yue Yan turned his face away, pushing off the hand on his waist, and sat cross-legged, "He's so bad, why did you lie to me?"
Yue Yan was very upset at that time. He had decided, no matter which city Guang Guang lived in, he would find a suitable time to visit. After all, they were of the same kind; why the rush to conflict? Rabbits generally don't trouble their own kind.
But Guang Guang was not a lop-eared rabbit at all, but a crazed rabbit killer!
"I thought I could keep it a secret for a very long time." Yi Yang sighed, showing no remorse for deceiving someone.
Reality couldn't be hidden anyway. The case made the news, attracting lots of attention due to its unprecedented nature. The little rabbit was bound to find out sooner or later.
"I'm really angry!" Yue Yan gritted his teeth, "I could have beaten him up myself, but you didn't tell me!"
"You..." Yi Yang couldn't help but laugh.
It's all over now, the dwarf rabbit is becoming more and more rogue.
And the worst part is, it's not over yet.
The next morning, just as Yi Yang left for work, Rabbit followed out, arriving at the police station only about ten minutes later than Officer Yi. Sneaking around, he went to the desk again and saw the resignation letter once more.
Yue Yan didn't even avoid the cameras this time, tearing and crumpling the paper before stuffing it into his pocket. Bai Wei came in looking for tea and suspiciously asked, "What did you tear up?"
Yue Yan pushed him out, avoiding everyone, and asked secretively, "Is Yi Yang resigning?"
"What?" Bai Wei fiddled with his thermos, opening and closing it, "Where did you hear that? Is it reliable?"
Rabbit pulled out the crumpled paper from his pocket, unfolding it to reveal the torn 'Resignation Application'.
"Hiss..." Bai Wei took it, examining it back and forth to determine its authenticity, "It really is a resignation application..."
Yue Yan frowned, "You really didn't know?"
"I had no idea!"
"Neither did I," Yue Yan sighed, "No, that's wrong. I knew a few days before you."
At that moment, Yi Yang and several colleagues were in the interrogation room, dealing with the accomplices in a serial murder case, who were confessing the details of their crimes.
Bai Wei quietly led Yue Yan there, and they crouched under the waist-high transparent glass, sneaking a peek at the people talking inside. They couldn't hear a thing, only seeing mouths moving.
Bai Wei pondered for a few seconds and shook his head, "Look, with such a serious attitude, he doesn't seem like someone about to resign, does he?"
"Right, it doesn't seem like it." Yue Yan was a bit afraid of being discovered, shrinking his head down a bit, "Last night, the document you were supposed to deliver to Director Zhou, what was it?"
"I didn't see it, I don't know." Bai Wei asked, "Do you think it was the resignation application?"
"Huh?!"
Bai Wei continued observing Yi Yang, "Can't be, right? Yi Yang said he might not even want a promotion after this case is completely resolved, it doesn't make sense..."
Yue Yan mimicked him, resting his chin on his hand, and as he looked inside, he saw his husband slamming his hand hard on the table. Though he couldn't hear anything, Rabbit still flinched.
"Such a fierce person."
Bai Wei agreed, "Yes, fierce, probably tough too."
Yue Yan had no reaction, but he felt like people around him were looking at him.
"Why are you looking at me?"
--------------------
Rabbit handed Bai Wei the shredded resignation application, pleading, "Officer Bai, if Yi Yang asks, could you say you tore it?" (Innocent face)
Bai Wei, confused, asked, "Why?"
Rabbit earnestly replied, "My relationship level with him is 100, but knowing this might drop it to 90..."
Bai Wei retorted, "What about my brotherhood level then!"
Rabbit, feeling scolded, pocketed the shredded paper, "I'll go ask Officer Xiao Cen." (Feeling wronged)
