    Chapter 6: Mutual Probing

Of course, Shen Xian was also wary of Gu Chen.

Such a massive corporation being helmed by someone as young as him couldn't just be a case of a wealthy playboy with a titular position. How much was he involved in the kidnapping incident from years ago? Was the Shenfei Group truly as peaceful and glorious as it appeared to outsiders?

The two of them exited the elevator, one after the other. Ma Qi approached them, iPad in hand, updating Gu Chen on his afternoon itinerary as she walked.

Shen Xian, holding a stack of documents, was unsure whether to advance or retreat.

"Postpone the afternoon meeting. Prepare some health supplements instead," Gu Chen instructed casually, glancing briefly at the schedule on the iPad. As he spoke, his long legs carried him into his office.

"Understood, Mr. Gu," Ma Qi replied promptly, halting her steps and turning back to her own workstation.

The swift and efficient handling, along with the strict adherence to professionalism, left Shen Xian no choice but to admire it.

With the documents in her arms, Shen Xian glanced at the closed door before turning back to her own office.

These files served as stark evidence of the Shenfei Group's precipitous fall from grace overnight due to the bomb incident.

Scanning through the documents quickly, she began analyzing the contents of the agreements. They were termination contracts for large-scale freight operations, involving sums of money beyond her imagination. If these collaborations were truly severed, the losses Shenfei would incur would be astronomical...

At this point, Shen Xian understood why Shenfei would choose to disclose such information publicly, or perhaps it was Gu Chen's strategic move.

But wouldn't they investigate who planted the bomb and their motive?

The bomber seemed aware that Gu Chen would visit the warehouse yesterday, hence the premeditated planting of the device. The trigger mechanism would be activated if the goods on top were moved. But why target Gu Chen specifically?

    A competitor? An enemy?

No, there were many ways to compete in business, and it wouldn't justify taking someone's life.

That left only one possibility: Gu Chen had an enemy – one who knew his every move!

As Shen Xian was lost in thought, a brief knock on the door interrupted her, followed by the door being pushed open.

It was the charming secretary who had invited Shen Xian to lunch earlier that day.

"The CEO, Mr. Gu, is going to visit Assistant Manager Zhang at the hospital and wants you to come along."

The girl walked in as she spoke, placing several large boxes of health supplements on Shen Xian's desk.

Shen Xian looked down and saw that they were all high-end items like deer antlers and ginseng. It was indeed... quite a generous gesture. However, were these kinds of supplements really suitable for someone like Assistant Manager Zhang, a patient...

"Is Assistant Manager Zhang's injury severe?"

Shen Xian only remembered that Zhang Chi had been trapped under shelves and goods yesterday, but she didn't know the specifics of his injuries.

"It seems quite serious, otherwise, Mr. Gu wouldn't be visiting personally. I hope..."

The sweet girl's eyes started to redden as she spoke.

"Oh, by the way, my name is Chen Nuo."

Regaining her composure, she flashed a sweet smile and introduced herself.

"Shen Xian," Shen Xian nodded slightly, revealing her name.

"I know," the girl paused, as if holding back something, then continued, "Even though that bomb was a fake, I still admire your courage."

Lowering her gaze to the nutritional supplements on the table, Shen Xian didn't know how to respond.

Now that everyone had collectively concluded that the bomb was a prank, it wouldn't be appropriate for her to offer further clarification.

    "Thank you," she said softly.

"There's no need to be too formal. It's understandable that you're still adjusting since you're new here. Although I'm not sure..."

Although she wasn't sure how long she could stay, considering the bomb was fake.

Shen Xian could sense what the girl was implying. Both she and Gu Chen were aware of the true situation, but Shen Xian was unsure of Gu Chen's intentions.

After all, to outsiders, her appointment as the special assistant was a colossal misunderstanding.

As they spoke, rhythmic footsteps echoed from outside. Gu Chen strode towards the elevator hall.

"Quick, President Gu is heading to the hospital. You'd better hurry up."

Chen Nuo stuffed the health supplements into Shen Xian's hands and gently nudged her towards the exit.

Upon hearing the commotion, Gu Chen turned his head slightly but said nothing.

Chen Nuo winked at Shen Xian and made a cheering gesture before gracefully departing as the professional woman she was.

Why would one need encouragement when visiting a patient in the hospital? Shen Xian mused with a smile. Perhaps Chen Nuo wanted her to put on a good show and strive to stay on the 35th floor.

With this thought, she found herself developing a favorable impression of this sweet girl.

Throughout the journey, Gu Chen seemed busy, never closing his laptop, and fielding non-stop phone calls.

Sitting in the front seat, Shen Xian held the large boxes of health supplements with utmost propriety, wondering what other executive assistants might do in such a situation.

Since the boss hadn't given any instructions, she decided not to disturb him.

Gu Chen didn't shy away from the conversation, discussing significant decisions and plans with the other party. He seemed to have entirely overlooked Shen Xian's presence, treating the driver as nothing more than an instrument, silent and focused solely on driving.

Upon arriving at the hospital, Gu Chen was still on a conference call. Shen Xian dared not move, sitting patiently in her seat.

As time passed, Shen Xian, seated rigidly, began to feel uncomfortable. She shifted her body to find a more comfortable position.

Gu Chen glanced at her, ending his call a few minutes later.

The driver promptly got out to open the door for Gu Chen, and Shen Xian followed closely behind. Breathing in the fresh air outside, she involuntarily took a deep breath.

In the bustling hospital, someone like Gu Chen naturally drew attention. His tall, upright posture, his dignified demeanor, and his silent yet intimidating presence made him stand out as he strode ahead.

Shen Xian silently followed behind, wishing she could hide from the curious gazes that fell upon her.

The elevator was somewhat crowded. Uncharacteristically, Gu Chen reached out to hold the door for Shen Xian, who was carrying heavy items.

    "Thank you."

With effort, Shen Xian stepped into the elevator and instinctively expressed her gratitude to Gu Chen.

Gu Chen was genuinely caring towards his own people. When Zhang Chi was ill, he was placed in an expensive intensive care unit with luxurious decorations and facilities on the top floor, making it seem less like a hospital.

    "Boss, it hurts."

One of Zhang Chi's legs was suspended, and upon seeing Gu Chen, he pitifully discarded his iPad and complained.

Gu Chen glanced at his suspended leg and pale face, furrowing his brows slightly, almost imperceptibly.

    "I know."

Following behind, Shen Xian observed Gu Chen's back view and suddenly felt that he was a very gentle person.

    "Who is she?"

Lying on the bed, Zhang Chi noticed Shen Xian standing by the door, momentarily puzzled.

    "Yesterday it was her..."

Before Gu Chen could finish his sentence, Zhang Chi interrupted eagerly, "It was you! I remember you, my savior! Quick... Aah—"

His excitement caused him to move abruptly, aggravating the pain in his injured leg.

    "Try to restrain yourself!"

Gu Chen held onto the oscillating traction rope, feeling exasperated by Zhang Chi's reaction.

Shen Xian stepped forward, placing the pile of boxes she was holding down. Zhang Chi had already seized her wrist, examining it intently.

"Wow, a female bomb-disposal hero! Let me see, you're incredible, not afraid of bombs at all. Thank you for saving me!"

Not accustomed to such close contact with strangers, Shen Xian gently pulled her hand back.

"The bomb was fake, so technically, I didn't really save you."
