    Chapter 186: Electric Fan

One afternoon, Yan Guang picked up Yu Huixin and brought her back home.

On the third day after her return, Yan Guang made a special trip to formally invite everyone to his house for the baby's first month party.

The celebration was held at noon, which happened to be a public holiday.

Su Zhaozhao hadn’t planned to bring Gu Xiang and the others along. She cooked meals for them at home before heading to the Yan family with Gu Heng.

The couple next door, Wang Chunhua and her husband, left at the same time and also left their children at home. Zhou Xiaojun wanted to go with his parents to the banquet but was pulled back by his sister, Zhou Fangfang, who had just returned home for summer vacation.

When they arrived at the Yan family, they were among the last to arrive. Gao Yue had gotten there early and was already helping out in the kitchen.

“Come in and sit down,” Yan Guang said, busying himself pouring water for everyone.

Su Zhaozhao and Wang Chunhua handed over their gifts to Yan’s mother, saying, “We brought a little something.” Yan’s mother’s face beamed like a chrysanthemum. “Just your presence is enough. This is too much.”

Yu Huixin and the baby stayed in the bedroom and didn’t come out. Yan’s mother took the gifts inside and told Yu Huixin who had sent them.

She then invited Su Zhaozhao and Wang Chunhua into the room to see the baby. “Let the aunties take a look at our little flower.”

Wang Chunhua asked, “The baby’s name is Little Flower?”

Yan’s mother lovingly held the baby. “Her name is Jasmine, but we call her Little Flower because she’s like a little bloom.”

“Jasmine, what a beautiful name!” Wang Chunhua praised.

“We’ll thank the aunties on behalf of Little Flower,” Yan’s mother replied with a smile.

The infant, formally named Yan Jasmine but nicknamed Little Flower, slept soundly in her grandmother’s arms, unbothered by the chatter outside.

The child looked like Yu Huixin, with fair and tender skin, dressed in a one-piece outfit with a small hat, looking utterly adorable.

After a while, Yan’s mother handed the baby to Yu Huixin.

Yu Huixin lay on the bed, looking a bit tired, with dark circles under her eyes from sleepless nights. She wore a calm smile as she exchanged polite greetings with Su Zhaozhao and the others before beginning to breastfeed the baby.

Su Zhaozhao and Wang Chunhua went back outside.

After some time, Ye Shulan arrived, followed by Jiang Yuan, the son of Director Jiang. Both were carrying gifts.

Su Zhaozhao raised an eyebrow. Were the female lead and the second male lead together now? Or had they just happened to meet on the way?

Wang Chunhua murmured in a low voice, “My Zhou Jianguo is driving me crazy. He couldn’t hold onto such a beautiful girl. Now, Director Jiang’s son has snatched her away.”

It wasn’t exactly accurate to say “snatched away,” since Ye Shulan and Zhou Jianguo hadn’t confirmed any relationship; they had only met each other.

Su Zhaozhao smiled. “It just means your eldest son’s time hasn’t come yet.”

“I don’t want to rush, but look at Director Jiang. He managed to transfer his son back. If only our Jianguo could be transferred back… The girls in our military compound…”

As she spoke, Wang Chunhua’s eyes lit up. “That Miss He from your unit…”

Su Zhaozhao quickly interjected, “She’s been transferred back to the city and will no longer be working at the co-op next week.”

Wang Chunhua was deeply disappointed. Among the unmarried female comrades in the co-op, she thought He Fang would be a great match.

During the meal, Su Zhaozhao carefully observed Ye Shulan and Jiang Yuan. The two of them were probably really in a relationship, and it looked like they were getting serious and might get married soon.

Su Zhaozhao was happy to see things progressing between them.

Sure enough, not long after, Su Zhaozhao heard the news of Ye Shulan's marriage to the son of Commander Jiang.

Su Zhaozhao wasn't very familiar with Ye Shulan, and she wasn't notified about the wedding. She heard the news so quickly thanks to Gu Heng.

Gu Heng attended the wedding and had a toast when Commander Jiang’s son got married.

Wang Chunhua sighed repeatedly to Su Zhaozhao, hinting that if Zhou Jianguo and Ye Shulan had ended up together, it would be her family celebrating a wedding right now.

She was practically dying to have a daughter-in-law.

As July rolled around, the heat started to intensify. Su Zhaozhao asked Zhū Chūnméi to help her get two electric fans. She left one for Xiao Tang and bought one for herself.

Gu Heng managed to get the electric fan coupons for her.

Back then, electric fans were crazy expensive!

The price was similar to that of a bicycle.

Even a basic table fan cost over a hundred yuan. The larger standing fans were even more expensive, costing three to four hundred yuan each, according to Zhū Chūnméi. They were also hard to find, with no stock available on the market. They were special supply goods.

The ones who were happiest about having electric fans at home were Gu Xiang and Gu Nian.

The day the electric fan was brought home, the siblings opened their mouths and blew air from the fan into their mouths, making "wulla-wulla" sounds.

    They were being so silly.

Su Zhaozhao saw the situation and gently pushed the two kids to the side. "Let me handle it."

    Gu Heng: “……”

    Who’s the real kid here?

The fan was mostly used during the day after they got it, so even with just one fan in the house, it didn’t affect their nighttime rest.

Back then, the weather was much cooler compared to today. Except for the midday heat, mornings and evenings were cool and comfortable.

Old houses made of earth and bricks stayed warm in winter and cool in summer.

You could feel a cool breeze as soon as you stepped inside.

Modern skyscrapers, with their new materials and designs, turned into ovens when the temperature soared.

Without AC, it would’ve been impossible to live through the heat.

But the heat from all those AC units just made things worse outside, creating a never-ending cycle.

Speaking of which, Gu Heng and Su Zhaozhao also used the fan at night.

    Like during those... *intimate* moments.

Gu Heng was especially happy about this.

Because now, when he held her, she didn’t complain about being hot anymore.

    Definitely worth celebrating!

    ...

Shortly before the summer vacation was about to end, Su Zhaozhao went to Sea City University.

She had already made up her mind that she would enroll in a distance learning program, earn a college degree, and continue to coast through her days at her job.

Gu Heng had no objections and fully supported her.

This support, of course, was for her attending university. If he knew she was just coasting, he would definitely criticize her for having a low level of awareness.

Su Zhaozhao easily found her way around Sea City University.

Classes hadn’t started yet, and the campus was nearly deserted. Su Zhaozhao first went to the faculty housing, but Teacher Bai was not in his room. She then headed to Wenhui Hall.

Sure enough, Teacher Bai was there.

When Su Zhaozhao arrived, Teacher Bai was sitting at his desk, holding a fountain pen, deeply engrossed in his writing.

His gaze was focused and determined, with a fiery, passionate light in his eyes. His brow was furrowed in deep thought and determination, as if pouring all his thoughts onto the page.

Su Zhaozhao didn’t want to disturb him, so she waited quietly by the door for a while.

It was only when Teacher Bai finished a segment of his work that she knocked on the door.
