Su Zhaozhao smiled. "Taking this class won't affect my work at the unit. The unit will definitely support it."
Gu Heng handed her the admission notice. "This is something that brings honor to the unit."
The child who was almost hit was indeed the child of a worker from the industrial zone. When the parent arrived, they spanked the child several times on the bottom, causing the child to wail loudly. The driver and the passengers who had been watching urged the parent to calm down for a moment before getting back on the bus and continuing the journey.
Su Zhaozhao got off the bus and stayed behind. The work at the industrial zone was nearly finished, and Gu Heng would be leaving soon, so she decided to wait and go back with him.
Su Zhaozhao had always been very interested in the industrial zone under construction and had wanted to visit for a long time. This was the perfect chance to check out the site.
From the roadside, it didn't seem like the area was that large, but once she walked in, especially when Gu Heng took her to a hill and showed her the entire planned site of the industrial zone, she realized just how massive it was.
The first thing she realized was how many jobs this would create!
At the construction site, soldiers and workers were busy at work, and several buildings were already completed.
Gu Heng led her towards one of the completed buildings. At the entrance, Su Zhaozhao saw a job recruitment notice.
She went closer for a detailed look. "They're hiring already?"
Gu Heng said, "We're hiring a portion first. Once the factory buildings are completed, work will start immediately."
"They're starting work even as the buildings are still being constructed."
"Yes."
Recalling her chats with the military wives, Su Zhaozhao asked, "How many positions are available for military families?"
Gu Heng smiled. "Almost all of them can be accommodated, it just depends on whether the military families are willing to come out and work."
Su Zhaozhao didn't know about others, but the military wives she had met were quite willing. Even Chunhua Sister wanted to work in the industrial zone since it wasn't far from where they lived.
Employing military families had always been a challenge for the army. The construction of the industrial zone not only provided a large number of job opportunities for the nearby villagers but also solved the issue of employing military families, benefiting both sides.
As they were talking, someone came down from the upper floor.
"Captain Gu, Sister-in-law, what brings you here?" Gao Yue walked over with a smile.
Su Zhaozhao was quite surprised to see Gao Yue there. "I went to the city and passed by on my way back, so I decided to take a look. And what are you doing here?"
"I work here."
Work?
The resettlement had already begun?
Given that her husband worked in logistics, it wasn't surprising that she had been placed so quickly. It seemed like she had been given an office job.
"That's wonderful."
Gao Yue had a constant smile on her face. "When are you heading back? Can you take me with you? We haven't gotten a bike for the house yet, and it's quite inconvenient to go back after work."
The army would send a vehicle to pick up the soldiers when their shift ended. Gao Yue had only been working there for two days and had been commuting via the army's shuttle bus.
The only downside to the ride is that it's too late, and by the time she gets back, it's always dark.
Su Zhaozhao looked at Gu Heng.
Gu Heng nodded, "We'll wait a little longer."
Gao Yue smiled, "Sure, I still have a bit of work to finish. I'll head back to my office for now, just let me know when you're ready to leave."
Gu Heng continued the tour with Su Zhaozhao.
Su Zhaozhao had wanted to ask Gu Heng what kind of work Gao Yue was doing here, but before she could, the broadcast on the construction site came on, and Gao Yue's voice was heard through it.
So, she's the announcer. It seems like a perfect fit for her.
When the music from the broadcast stopped, Gu Heng said, "Let's go, it's time to head back."
Su Zhaozhao nodded.
As they passed by the radio room downstairs, they called Gao Yue.
Xiao Fang was driving, and Su Zhaozhao hadn't seen him for a while, "Comrade Xiao Fang, how's your leg now?"
Xiao Fang cheerfully greeted her, "It's been fine for a while now, thank you for your concern, Sister-in-law."
When he saw Gao Yue following behind, his smile faltered, and he looked awkward.
"Gao... Sister-in-law."
Gao Yue smiled and nodded, "Hello."
Xiao Fang awkwardly chuckled, scratching the back of his head, and hurriedly climbed into the car. Once everyone was seated, he stepped on the gas.
Gu Heng glanced at him, "There are a lot of people around here, drive slower."
The car slowed down a bit.
Xiao Fang used to talk a lot while driving, but today he was as silent as if his tongue had been pulled.
Su Zhaozhao sat in the back, glancing at Gao Yue and then at Xiao Fang in the front.
This poor guy probably still hasn't gotten over her.
It would take about 30 minutes to bike from the industrial area to the residential zone, but by car, it was much faster. In just over ten minutes, they arrived at the residential area, and Gao Yue got out of the car with Su Zhaozhao and Gu Heng, without asking Xiao Fang to drive her any further.
It wasn't until she was lying in bed that Su Zhaozhao brought up Teacher Bai to Gu Heng, "...I tried to talk him out of it, but he wouldn't listen."
Gu Heng rested one arm behind his head and held her with the other, "Once someone chooses a path, they tend to stick to it no matter what. If they don't, they might look back and see nothing but regret and frustration. Teacher Bai is likely one of those people."
"Why go down a dangerous path when you can avoid it and protect yourself first?"
Gu Heng's mouth twitched slightly, and after a moment, he said, "Their debate can't be reduced to a simple black-and-white issue."
Su Zhaozhao nestled tightly in Gu Heng's embrace and softly replied, "This isn't just a debate about art; it's a deeper conflict between progress and tradition."
Her voice carried a hint of heaviness, as if bearing the anxieties of an entire era.
Knowing the future, she could warn others to avoid danger, but for those unaware, they could only rely on their own experiences and instincts. Everyone must make their own choices and follow their own path.
Some things are inevitable.
Only time will tell which path is the right one.
This is the growing pain of an era.
Gu Heng patted her on the shoulder. "Don't talk about this with anyone, especially not at school, especially not with your classmates. Avoid discussing current events whenever possible."
Su Zhaozhao soaked in his warmth, pressing close to him without minding the heat. "I get it. I won’t say a word. I’ll just focus on my studies and stay out of any discussions."
Gu Heng felt reassured by her words.
He held her close, savoring her warmth and softness.
He knew she was sharp and had a keen sense of what was happening around her.
Her sharp insight never failed to amaze him.
Gu Heng felt confident about the future. No matter what challenges they faced, they could lean on each other and move forward together, strong and steady.
Tão fofo Gu Heng!!!
