    Chapter 82

Weakened after his blood was drawn, Jiang Yao lay on the bed. Half an hour later, he crawled out of the room, ate his first nutrient pack in what felt like ages, and, summoning his strength, slipped past the patrols to emerge above ground.

The city was in chaos. People and wolves from the independent zones, forbidden to relocate due to identity issues, had seized the opportunity to rebel amidst the turmoil. Looting and warfare raged everywhere.

Jiang Yao stood on a long, vintage European-style corridor, willow catkins drifting like snow around him. Dressed in a white shirt, he gazed sideways at the floating fluff, his expression serene and gentle.

    Dawn broke.

Jiang Yao exuded a profound stillness and solitude that made one reluctant to disturb him.

Doug halted, then took two steps back. For that brief moment, he felt like an outsider who had stumbled into a living painting.

    "You've finally returned," Doug said.

A chip implanted by the research institute lay hidden in Jiang Yao's body. The underground prison where Louis had held him was shielded, but the moment he surfaced, Doug could locate him instantly.

A black wolf lay sprawled on the ground, seemingly bothered by the heat, panting with its belly exposed, scratching itself.

Jiang Yao paused, a flicker of almost imperceptible revulsion crossing his face before vanishing.

The black wolf sprang up, circling Jiang Yao's ankles, attempting to playfully knock him over.

Doug remarked, "A wolf pup—a prime research specimen. Soon, it'll be able to speak human language."

The wolf whimpered softly, letting out a few plaintive yips.

Doug led Jiang Yao to a room, offering him temporary rest and some food. The young wolf kept guard outside Jiang Yao's door. Jiang Yao curled up on the bed and slept until the sound of running water from the washroom roused the young wolf.
