Chapter 29 Caught in the Act
byChapter 29 Caught in the Act
Hearing Mo Xiu finally agree to Xie Wu joining them, Cheng Cheng was so excited he almost jumped for joy.
Perhaps it was fate between people, but Cheng Cheng felt that Xie Wu really clicked with him. Just as he was about to leap halfway, Mo Xiu pressed him back down.
"I know you're happy, but hold off on celebrating for now," Mo Xiu said. Although Cheng Cheng had always been a live wire, they were still in the middle of doing something shady.
Even if they weren’t afraid of being seen carrying shovels to this sparsely populated and somewhat desolate place, it would still look suspicious.
And right beside them was the spot where they had just buried the body. Celebrating by a fresh grave somehow felt inauspicious.
When they returned near the RV, to create the illusion that Xie Wu hadn’t returned today, Mo Xiu checked the surrounding area once more.
He didn’t let Xie Wu drive the RV back to their apartment building today but instead chose for the three of them to walk back.
With Mo Xiu’s Wind Superpower assisting them, they moved quickly. But the fact that they didn’t run into anyone along the way made even Cheng Cheng remark on their luck.
The uses of spiritual sense were actually many—not only could it be used for reconnaissance, but it could also shield perceptions and even plant suggestions in people’s minds. Although Mo Qi’s men hadn't appeared, they had essentially been working alongside this group for half the night.
When they reached the doors of the two apartment rooms, Mo Xiu didn’t think twice before telling Xie Wu to go with Cheng Cheng.
Although compared to Cheng Cheng and Xiao Wan, he and Mo Qi lived in the same room, there was actually a spare room in their unit.
But remembering how Mo Qi had said he was unhappy about Bian Tai bringing those people by, Mo Xiu didn’t want to lead Mo Qi to think that he didn’t care about his feelings because of Xie Wu.
More importantly, he also didn’t like anyone disturbing the time he spent alone with Mo Qi. Only when the two of them were together did he feel most relaxed and comfortable.
Cheng Cheng didn’t read into it. He didn’t know that even after arriving at the base and having a two-room apartment, Mo Xiu and Mo Qi still hadn’t separated and continued to share a room. He very enthusiastically invited Xie Wu over.
Cheng Cheng had grown up in an orphanage, where many children slept in the same room from a young age. Later, when he grew older and went out to work, he stayed in construction site bunkhouses.
Now, having a room to himself, he actually felt rather lonely.
"Xie, just stay with me. Our apartment is really spacious. Especially the room I sleep in—the bed is two meters by two meters, massive. The two of us will definitely fit!"
Xie Wu smiled and nodded, thanked Mo Xiu, and then left with Cheng Cheng.
Leaving Mo Xiu standing alone at the door of his room, hesitating for a moment before opening the door and going inside.
Somehow, the thought of bringing Xie Wu back tonight made him feel guilty for no reason.
But he had left quietly, and Mo Qi should still be asleep by now. He could explain everything properly tomorrow morning. He believed Mo Qi, being so understanding, would accept his decision.
Of course, if the other didn’t understand… well, at worst, he could give Xie Wu some benefits and let him leave once things cooled off.
Mo Xiu thought this as he opened the door, only to find that the person he expected to be sound asleep in the room was actually in the living room, sitting quietly on the sofa.
When Mo Xiu entered, the man turned his head and stared at him calmly.
The feeling of guilt grew stronger. Mo Xiu even felt like a husband who had been cheating, returning home after sneaking around, only to be caught red-handed by his partner.
Mo Xiu knew this illusion was absurd, but he genuinely felt that way.
Clearing his throat awkwardly, Mo Xiu finally asked Mo Qi, "It’s so late, why are you up? Did you have a nightmare? You can't sleep?"
Upon hearing this, Mo Qi arched an eyebrow, folded his arms, and just stared quietly at Mo Xiu without saying a word.
Mo Qi's attitude gave Mo Xiu a weird feeling. After hesitating for a few seconds, he decided to be upfront.
He walked over to the man and sat down beside him, saying, "Mo Qi, I went out earlier to handle some business."
Seeing that the other person nodded and finally reacted after he said this, Mo Xiu continued, "I took out Bian Tai, and along the way, I saved Xie Wu and Cheng Cheng. Actually, it was like this..."
He gave a rundown of the whole story from start to finish, not intending to hide anything from Mo Qi. Of everything that happened tonight, the only thing that worried him was that I brought Xie Wu back.
"I was worried you’d overthink things or worry about something that wasn’t worth it, so I didn’t say anything. I waited until you were sound asleep before leaving. I didn’t expect you to wake up.
And as for Xie Wu, I know you don’t like him. If you’re unhappy, I’ll send him away."
Mo Xiu gave Mo Qi a pleading look and squeezed his palm.
Seeing this, Mo Qi sighed softly and said, "I understand."
Of course, he knew Mo Xiu hadn’t meant to hide it from him, but he still couldn’t help worrying.
He just felt that if he had known in advance that the other was going to do something dangerous, he could’ve been ready. Even if he couldn’t move around easily right now, he could have used his spiritual sense to keep an eye on and protect him.
Although he had sensed it both times Mo Xiu left and used his spiritual sense to follow and guard him, what if one day he didn’t notice?
"I know you had my best interests at heart, but I still hope you’ll tell me if something like this happens again. Or do you think I can’t help you at all, that I’m useless..."
As he spoke, Mo Qi kept his eyes fixed on Mo Xiu’s face. He knew this person was tenderhearted and deliberately let a touch of hurt show in his eyes.
Sure enough, upon hearing this, Mo Xiu immediately shook his head vigorously. "No way I’d think you’re useless! Don’t overthink it. Just having you by my side is the biggest support I have!"
Mo Xiu tightly held the man’s hand, hoping to convey his feelings through the gesture.
Mo Qi was the most important person in the world to him. If Mo Qi weren’t important, what meaning would his rebirth even have?
Mo Xiu was certain that without Mo Qi, after he had killed everyone who had once caused his death, he might have lost all purpose to continue living in this apocalyptic world.
But because Mo Qi was here, this crumbling world still had at least one person he cared about. There was still hope to keep living.
"Then why don’t you ever tell me? Promise me you’ll let me know in advance next time, and I’ll believe you."
The man gazed at Mo Xiu expectantly, as if he wouldn’t drop it without a promise.
Faced with such a gaze, Mo Xiu couldn’t say no. After a moment’s hesitation, he finally nodded.
Only then was the other satisfied.
"I knew you’d always be the best to me!"
As he spoke, Mo Qi hugged Mo Xiu, burying his head in the other’s shoulder and breathing in his familiar scent deeply.
Mo Xiu was already used to this affectionate clinginess. He instinctively hugged back, gently patting the man’s back, enjoying the warmth and tranquility of the moment.
After the two held each other for a while, Mo Xiu said softly, "Don’t say such nonsense again. Believe me, you are the most important to me.
It’s still early—it’s still dark out. Let’s go back and rest a bit more."
Hearing Mo Xiu’s words, Mo Qi felt warmth in his heart and without another word, pulled him back to the bedroom.
Mo Xiu was right—it was indeed still early. So not only should he rest, but the other should get some decent rest too.
Seeing the other person unusually quick to put on Mo Xiu’s jacket, Mo Xiu smiled and cooperated, soon undressing as well until he was in just a tank top and shorts. After lying down, he was immediately embraced by the person beside him.
He felt a warm kiss on his forehead.
Hearing the other say "good night," Mo Xiu couldn't help but curl his lips into a smile.
The warm body temperature and familiar scent of the person beside him filled him with immense comfort, and before he knew it, he drifted off to sleep.
That night, Mo Xiu slept deeply. The next day, it wasn’t until the sun was well up that Cheng Cheng—who’d made breakfast—knocked a few times before Mo Xiu finally woke up.
Opening the door, he saw Cheng Cheng and Xie Wu outside. The door to the opposite room was open, and the smell of food wafted out from inside.
Soon after, Cheng Cheng's loud, energetic voice rang in his ears.
"Brother Mo, you're finally awake! Today's breakfast was made with Xie Wu's help—he and Xiao Wan cooked it together. It's such a feast! You and the boss should come out quickly and eat with us! I’m drooling already!"
"I can tell you're really craving it." Mo Qi emerged from the room as well, rubbing his head sleepily and wearing loose pajamas.
He slung an arm around Mo Xiu's shoulder, yawned not caring how he looked, and said with a smile, "It does smell really good. Let's go."
After saying that, he took Mo Xiu's hand.
Although Mo Xiu was often pulled into hugs or held by Mo Qi, they rarely held hands. For a moment, he felt a bit shy and awkward, but he didn't refuse.
The man's palm was broad, his fingertips slightly cold.
Instinctively, Mo Xiu held the other’s hand tightly in his own and said worriedly, "Why are your hands so cold? Are you not wearing enough? Don’t get chilled."
After speaking, he hurried back into the room to fetch a jacket for Mo Qi, and only then did the two head next door together.
As the man passed by Xie Wu, he gave him a deliberate look.
Their eyes met for a moment, and Xie Wu instantly felt an overwhelming sense of pressure—a primal, instinctual fear he had never experienced from another human being.
Xie Wu instinctively lowered his head, avoiding the other's gaze.
At that moment, he was almost certain that this man named Mo Qi was far from the useless pretty boy who mooches off Mo Xiu, as Xu Liang and the others had described.
Having witnessed Mo Xiu's skills and the brutal efficiency with which he had killed the night before, Xie Wu even began to entertain a thought:
The man standing before him now might be an even more formidable and terrifying presence than Mo Xiu!
