Chapter 30 Pillow Talk
byChapter 30 Pillow Talk
Seeing Xie Wu avert his gaze, Mo Qi continued walking ahead naturally.
Although he sensed Xie Wu likely had no romantic interest in Mo Xiu, a warning was still necessary.
*Trying to compete with me for a meal ticket?* Absolutely not!
This long-term meal ticket, Mo Xiu, belonged to him—to him alone—and could only support him.
As a Demon Lord, once the strongest being in the cultivation world, having to share a meal ticket with someone else would be a total loss of face.
Moreover, the mere thought of Mo Xiu fussing over others, showing them tenderness and attentive care, stirred a surge of violence in the man's heart.
He realized his possessiveness toward Mo Xiu was quite intense.
However, Mo Qi saw no problem with that. Since when did demon cultivators need to follow rules? If he wanted something, it was his.
Besides, it was Mo Xiu who had come to him first.
Thinking this, the man entered Cheng Cheng’s house with Mo Xiu. Seeing the large table full of food, Mo Qi raised an eyebrow.
Lu Pingwan was setting out bowls and chopsticks. When she saw them arrive, she cheerfully greeted them, "You're finally here!
Look, these rice balls were all made by Xie Wu—in all sorts of colors, even little animal shapes! I've never seen anything like this before!"
Hearing this, Xie Wu scratched his head somewhat sheepishly. He wasn't good at cooking, but he knew how to prepare food for the animals he cared for. Making veggie and meat rice balls was something he was quite skilled at, though he had asked Lu Pingwan for help with seasoning.
Worried that plain rice balls might not impress, he had gone out of his way to shape them, hoping to leave a better impression.
"They do look quite good," Mo Qi said with a smile, sitting down beside Mo Xiu.
Hearing Mo Qi's words, Xie Wu finally relaxed and sat down with everyone to eat. It had been a long time since he'd had such a proper breakfast. A warm bowl of soy milk comforted him, and he felt genuinely moved.
Seeing that Mo Qi wasn't upset about Xie Wu's presence, Mo Xiu also smiled. Noticing a cat-shaped rice ball, he immediately placed it in Mo Qi's bowl, saying with a laugh, "Here, this one suits you best!"
"Hmm?"
Mo Qi looked at the cute cat-shaped rice ball in his bowl, gave the young man a puzzled look, and instinctively tilted his head.
He was so big and tough—what did he have in common with this little cat?
Mo Xiu's smile deepened. Seeing Mo Qi's confused, head-tilting expression, he thought even more that Mo Qi was like a big cat.
"What are you laughing at?" Mo Qi muttered under his breath as he picked up the cat rice ball and took a bite. He then narrowed his eyes, finding the taste surprisingly good.
If this was the level of skill, then Xie Wu really could stay—specifically to make these little rice balls for him.
After a few bites, and seeing Mo Xiu smiling happily beside him, Mo Qi didn't push the issue. The reason didn't matter; seeing Mo Xiu happy made him happy too.
While the group at the table enjoyed a harmonious breakfast, on the other side, Xu Liang was swamped with problems.
Early in the morning, someone had discovered Yang’s body. Yang had always been by Bian Tai's side—something many people knew.
Connecting this with Ren Zha's murder in the middle of the night earlier, Xu Liang immediately sent people to find Bian Tai, only to discover his room was empty.
Xu Liang had a bad feeling and quickly dispatched more people to search for Bian Tai, but they found nothing.
Bian Tai had been under his command for so long; given the situation, it was likely something had happened to him.
"Dammit, I told him long ago to lay low for a while and not cause trouble outside," Xu Liang said angrily.
If Ren Zha's death had initially made him suspect it might have been due to a personal grudge or some accident, now that Bian Tai was also dead—along with the henchman always at his side—it was different.
Most likely, the henchman had seen something or learned the identity of the person behind it, leading to him being eliminated as well.
From the looks of it, these recent murders were probably targeting him.
Although Xu Liang's Fire Superpower had reached level three, making him a powerful figure in the Base, the feeling of danger lurking in the shadows, watching him, was unsettling.
After Ren Zha's death, he had increased security but hadn't taken major action. This time was different. Xu Liang went to great lengths, carefully investigating all possibilities around him, determined to uncover the culprit.
But the results were unsatisfactory. Mo Xiu and the others had done a thorough job cleaning up that night, and Mo Qi's spiritual sense had blocked and intercepted anyone nearby. Thus, their actions had gone completely unnoticed.
It was like a sudden cold case. Despite his considerable influence, finding the culprit proved unexpectedly difficult.
With no other options, Xu Liang had to swallow his frustration for now and weigh other options.
However, he couldn't bear this loss alone. So, he went to Base Commander Xiong Mingyuan.
Xiong Mingyuan was now the leader at Mountain River Base. Like Bian Tai, he was a strength-based superhuman, but his Superpower level was higher, his methods were ruthless, and he had a group of followers.
Xiong Mingyuan and Xu Liang were rivals in the Base, maintaining surface-level harmony while secretly wanting to eliminate each other.
Though Mountain River Base wasn't exactly official, it had its own order. Ordinary people might overlook it, but when it came to rare superhumans, they couldn't just die for no reason.
Xu Liang found it easy to justify, claiming it was for the Base's safety, and pressured Xiong Mingyuan to cooperate in a large-scale screening. He also took the opportunity to sneak some of his own men onto Xiong Mingyuan's side.
Xiong Mingyuan was naturally unhappy but had no reasonable grounds to refuse, so he had to swallow this injustice. At the same time, he couldn't help wondering: who had killed Xu Liang's two henchmen?
If the target was only Xu Liang, he might come out on top. But if not...
It seemed that besides going through the motions of the screening, he needed to take some action privately as well.
Xu Liang shook things up in the Base once more. Although he didn't find the mastermind, he gained some advantages. With no progress in the case, he had to temporarily set it aside.
He then turned his attention to expanding his influence. Mo Xiu, a dual-ability user, had always been on his recruitment list.
Finally finding the time to inquire about Mo Xiu's recent situation, he learned that Mo Xiu had kept a man named Xie Wu. This convinced him that his idea of sending people over was correct.
He could use Xie Wu to persuade Mo Xiu to join his side. After all, Xie Wu was someone Bian Tai had carefully selected to be an agent of influence.
So, within a couple of days, Xu Liang sent people to "invite" Xie Wu over.
Aside from praising Xie Wu and making grand promises, he naturally urged him to put in more effort, assuring him that benefits would follow.
Xie Wu agreed on the surface, but as soon as he returned, he immediately told Mo Xiu and the others everything.
Everyone gathered in the same room, their expressions varied. Only Cheng Cheng was lost.
After listening, he looked puzzledly at Xie Wu and asked, "*What* do you mean by ‘pillow talk’? Isn't that something said about a couple?
What does whether Brother Mo joins the Deputy Base Director's side have to do with you? Weren't you people sent here to do odd jobs for us?"
Questions came one after another. As soon as he finished, seeing Lu Pingwan's look that said it all, Cheng Cheng suddenly understood.
"So you weren't sent here to work—you were sent to be with Brother Mo? But..." Cheng Cheng paused, scratching his head, his mind racing with the drama of it all.
Given his relatively limited past experiences, his straightforward personality, and his happy, carefree childhood, how could he have ever encountered such things?
“Then what does Xu Liang mean by that? You and Brother Mo aren’t that kind of relationship—so why would he even suggest something like that?”
Somehow, after realizing Xie Wu had been sent over for that reason, Cheng Cheng felt strangely uncomfortable.
“Xie Wu, what are you thinking? You’re not actually planning to follow that guy’s orders and try to seduce Brother Mo, are you?”
Cheng Cheng stared fixedly at Xie Wu, unconcerned about others’ presence, and blurted it out directly.
Hearing this, Xie Wu quickly shook his head. Especially after sensing Mo Qi’s gaze fall upon him, that crushing pressure surged back, and he frantically waved his hands.
“I swear—I never had any such intention! Back then, when I wanted to join this team, Bian Tai had backed me into a corner; I just needed a place to hide.
You all saved me and helped me—I’m already deeply grateful. How could I possibly harbor such improper thoughts? I swear I have absolutely no ulterior motives toward Mo Xiu!”
After saying this, the oppressive pressure finally lifted, allowing Xie Wu to breathe a heavy sigh of relief.
Coming back to his senses, he realized his back was drenched in cold sweat.
Hearing Xie Wu’s words, Cheng Cheng’s face finally broke into a smile again.
After spending some time at this base, he’d come to realize Mountain River Base might not be such a good place after all.
The mastermind behind this situation was none other than Deputy Base Director Xu Liang.
Just the fact that Bian Tai—whose name literally means “pervert”—a man they’d recently taken down, was Xu Liang’s close subordinate, made it clear this man was definitely no good.
“Brother Mo, I think Xu Liang is bad news,” Cheng Cheng concluded quickly.
Mo Xiu nodded upon hearing this—unexpectedly, the kid was quite perceptive. He turned to look at Xie Wu standing nearby and felt satisfied that Xie Wu had honestly disclosed Xu Liang’s approach and instructions.
He could do that—and their help hadn’t been in vain.
After a moment’s thought, Mo Xiu said to Xie Wu, “No rush. If he contacts you again, just brush him off and stall for time.”
