Chapter 19: The Werewolf Disappearance Case

Recently, several werewolf disappearances have occurred in the eastern district.

Among them was even a werewolf esper.

The government is taking this matter very seriously and has established a special task force to investigate it.

Just then, Jiang Yi received a message from the Wild Wolf Corps.

They hoped Ke Lin could help them rescue the minority species from the Opa Family's detention center.

"Do you want me to go, Master?" Ke Lin looked at the letter on the table, seeking Jiang Yi's opinion.

"I don't want you to face any danger, but what about you? You want to go, don't you?" Jiang Yi asked. Even without using his esper abilities, he could guess Ke Lin's thoughts.

Ke Lin nodded. "Back when I was imprisoned, I thought everything I endured was just the fate a werewolf should accept. But after meeting you, Master, I realized all of that was wrong. Since I've escaped, I hope others in the detention center can also gain their freedom."

Jiang Yi understood Ke Lin very well. From Ke Lin's fragmented memories and recent understanding, Castonopa didn't see the werewolves under him as people at all. If no one stopped him, more werewolves would be plunged into misery.

Moreover, something else had been bothering Jiang Yi.

In Ke Lin's memories, Jiang Yi saw that he had been tied to a bed and forcibly given an injection. Other werewolves around him had similar experiences.

Ke Lin didn't know what it was either. He originally thought it was medicine for the fits he had on rainy nights.

But thinking about it now, Caston probably didn't have their best interests at heart.

"What reactions did you have after being injected?" Jiang Yi asked.

"Some dizziness, but it would pass quickly. No other special reactions," Ke Lin recalled.

    Jiang Yi grew more suspicious.

Finally, Jiang Yi thought they could contact the Wild Wolf Corps. If they could lend a hand without putting themselves in danger, both he and Ke Lin were willing.

"Was the werewolf who delivered the letter this time the same one who appeared on the rooftop last time?" Jiang Yi asked.

Werewolves are very sensitive to scents. Ke Lin picked up the letter, took a light sniff of it, and nodded in confirmation. "It's that unusual female werewolf."

Jiang Yi suddenly thought of something and said quietly, "I think I know who she is."

The next day, Jiang Yi and Ke Lin went to the school's administration building.

On the first floor, in the photo wall, they spotted a familiar face. Jiang Yi pointed at the photo and asked a passing staff member who it was.

"This is our Comprehensive Office Director, Teacher Hera. Student, you're Jiang Yi, the one who won the challenge match the other day, right? Do you need something from Teacher Hera?"

"I need to ask her about something. Could you please tell me which office is hers?" Jiang Yi said.

    "Fourth floor, room 449."

    "Thank you."

When they arrived at the office, Hera stood with her arms crossed, leaning against the window, facing the door and watching them as if she had long known they would come.

Upon seeing her, Ke Lin immediately went on guard. The woman before him was precisely the werewolf who had climbed through the window to try and take him away.

She had already undergone bloodline awakening and could freely control her form. She could take on this form, looking like an ordinary person without a tail or ears, or transform into a full wolf—a true beast.

The moment he saw Hera, Jiang Yi confirmed his speculation.

The person who helped him sabotage the supernatural ability disruptor in the third round of the challenge was none other than the administrative teacher before him.

She was actually an undercover agent for the Wild Wolf Corps embedded in human society.

And she was at Starry Vault Academy, a hub for young talents. Jiang Yi believed that if she decided to make a move, no student in the academy would be a match for her.

Seeing Jiang Yi's reaction, Hera knew he had connected all the dots.

"Student Jiang Yi, no need to thank me. I helped you out of regard for Ke Lin," Hera said as she walked toward them.

"Were the recent wolfman disappearances also your doing?" Jiang Yi asked.

"Not disappearances—we were facilitating their return to their true home. As you've seen, we signed a pact with humans back then, but many of you haven't honored it."

Jiang Yi couldn't argue with that; Caston was a prime example.

"What do you want Ke Lin to help you with?" Jiang Yi cut straight to the point.

"Relax, you two. I just want Ke Lin to tell us the specific location of the containment facility and some details."

Hera wore a black professional suit, her hair tied up in a bun, and a pair of silver-framed glasses. When she spoke, there was a warmth and fondness in her tone, like an elder toward the younger generation.

Looking at Hera like this, no one could imagine she was a being capable of transforming into a wild wolf in the next second.

Jiang Yi glanced at Ke Lin, his eyes asking for input.

Ke Lin nodded firmly. "I can tell you everything I know, but I'm not sure if the information is still accurate after more than two years."

"That's fine. Just recall as much as you can. We'll play it by ear during the operation," Hera said.

Hera took out a piece of paper and asked Ke Lin to stay in the office to draw a map of the facility's layout.

"Student Jiang Yi, I know you have a professional class this afternoon. You can go ahead and attend it."

"I'll stay here with him," Jiang Yi said, unwilling to leave Ke Lin alone. As for the class, a university experience wasn't complete without skipping a few.

Hera shrugged indifferently. "Suit yourself. Although little Ke Lin doesn't want to come back with me, he's still a precious member of our clan. You should trust me."

Jiang Yi gave her a silent glance before standing up and moving to Ke Lin's side.

Hera wouldn't harm Ke Lin, but whether she might try to take him by force was less certain.

As evening approached, Ke Lin finally relayed everything he could remember to Hera.

When she heard that most wolfmen had been injected with a certain drug, Hera's expression turned serious. "Those vile humans! Besides preventing our bloodline awakening, are they plotting something even more sinister?"

"If there's a chance, you could bring a vial of the drug out," Jiang Yi suggested.

"We'll do our best," Hera said as she saw them out. "Thank you both for today. As for my identity, please keep it confidential. If it were exposed, the consequences would be severe."

Before leaving, Jiang Yi asked Hera one more question, "What role do you play in the Wild Wolf Corps?"

"It's fine to tell you. I'm the deputy leader of the Wild Wolf Corps and the leader of the wild wolves in Snow City. So, the moment my identity is exposed will mark the moment Snow City falls to the Wild Wolf Corps." Hera's tone was light, but her words were enough to make anyone pale.

But Jiang Yi was no ordinary person; he even felt a hint of anticipation at the scene Hera described.

As the temperature dropped, the semester's classes gradually came to an end.

While everyone was taking their final exams, they also began preparing for the upcoming field training camp next semester.

"Jiang Yi, have you found a partner yet?" Jia Zheyu leaned in, looking somewhat downcast.

    "Not yet," Jiang Yi replied.

Jia Zheyu sighed. "I asked two enhancement-type students, and both turned me down. What's wrong with Super Vision? Super Vision is awesome too! When you go out to fight mutants, don't you need to see clearly where they are first?"

"Very much so. Their loss for missing out on you," Jiang Yi sincerely comforted.

Jia Zheyu scratched his head, feeling like his brain was short-circuiting, otherwise why did he always feel Jiang Yi was throwing shade at him.

"Alright," Jia Zheyu brushed off his annoyance and started gossiping with Jiang Yi. "Have you heard? Caston's young werewolf has also disappeared. At first, I thought the werewolf disappearances were some sinister incident, but now it seems it might be a werewolf-protection organization rescuing those oppressed werewolves."

Jiang Yi glanced at him in surprise. In a way, Jia Zheyu had guessed it completely. "I genuinely think you're very smart."

    Jia Zheyu: ...

He'd been complimented, but it didn't feel genuine.

"Good thing you're nice to Ke Lin. Those people probably won't kidnap Ke Lin," Jia Zheyu said.

Jiang Yi smiled helplessly. Not necessarily. He could sense that Hera was very interested in Ke Lin.

As they spoke, Ke Lin was obediently eating his meal. Hearing that Xiao Feng had been rescued by Hera and the others, he felt genuinely happy for him.

Just as the group was about to finish eating, Caston stormed over angrily and flipped their table over in one swift motion.

For the first time, he didn't maintain his usual haughty demeanor. Instead, he directly used his "Strength Enhancement" ability, moving fast and with great force.

Jiang Yi and the others didn't have time to activate their abilities to stop him. The table was sent flying, and plates crashed to the floor, shattering loudly.

"Caston, are you insane!" Jia Zheyu shouted, leaping back, but he couldn't avoid getting splashed with soup.

Jiang Yi reacted faster, pulling Ke Lin back in time to avoid any stains. However, Caston's action undoubtedly angered everyone present.

Dak the Treant confronted Caston's bodyguards, while Jia Zheyu stepped in front of Caston and started cursing loudly.

So what if it was some so-called major family? The Jia family had been around for so many years and wasn't any worse than the Opa Family!

Two days ago, Caston's shelter had been discovered. A group of powerful individuals forced their way in and freed nearly half of the werewolves inside.

What was even more infuriating was that these werewolves seemed to have vanished into thin air. No matter how many resources he used, he couldn't find any trace of them.

He ordered a strict investigation into the incident and found that when the shelter guards fought them, the intruders accidentally tore off a piece of paper.

That torn fragment was only about the size of a palm, but you could just make out a hand-drawn map.

Who would know the layout of the shelter and could provide maps and routes to others?

Only Ke Lin, whom he had abandoned!

Caston stared at Ke Lin, his gaze full of unconcealed venom, wishing he could seize Ke Lin and give him a merciless whipping.

Ke Lin hadn't expected to be discovered, but he wasn't afraid. He met Caston's gaze calmly and directly.

"If you want a duel, I don't mind having a match with you," Jiang Yi stepped in front of Caston, looking at him with icy eyes.

"I just want you dead!" Caston's tone was sinister, his voice seeming to come from the depths of hell.

Caston had long wanted to kill Jiang Yi, but when he arranged for someone to do the deed, his father stopped him.

Jiang Yi was under the protection of the Pei family's spoiled young master, and he was also the only psychic in the new class at Starry Vault Academy. That old man Bainasen was extremely protective of his own, and due to a certain top-secret incident, every psychic was a high-priority subject for the Federal Research Institute.

If Jiang Yi were to die just like that, the fallout would be far worse than they imagined.

"Jiang Yi, you'd better pray you make it back from the wilderness training alive!" Caston made his intentions clear.

"I'm afraid I'll have to disappoint you." Jiang Yi flared his psychic power, pushing back with even greater force.

Just as the two sides were locked in a stalemate, some students fetched teachers and nearby security guards.

Caston couldn't do anything to Jiang Yi in the cafeteria, so he glared fiercely at Jiang Yi and the others before turning and leaving with his bodyguards.

Since he couldn't strike in secret, he would openly send Jiang Yi and Ke Lin to their graves.
