Chapter 36: Ke Lin to the Rescue
byChapter 36: Ke Lin to the Rescue
Back at the military base, Captain Kang Long, the team leader, was announcing the training tasks for the next day.
All team members listened attentively. Jiang Yi stood at the back, head lowered, watching stray hairs, blown by the wind, brush against his eyelashes. He really needed a haircut.
Tomorrow happened to be his day off to visit family.
Maybe he'd take Ke Lin with him. Come to think of it, Ke Lin's hair was getting a bit long too. Wonder what style he should go for?
While Jiang Yi was figuring out his plans for tomorrow, Captain Kang Long had already finished speaking and walked over to his side.
"Jiang Yi, don't put too much pressure on yourself. Your psychic ability is a great help to the team."
"Yeah... thanks, Captain," Jiang Yi replied casually.
Seeing Jiang Yi still seeming low-spirited, Kang Long shook his head helplessly and walked away. After all, psychic level was in the genes, essentially fixed from birth. No matter how hard Jiang Yi tried, he couldn't become a high-level esper.
After working out his plan for tomorrow, Jiang Yi looked up at Kang Long's departing figure. Had the captain just been trying to comfort him?
All other members of the Esper Team were A-level. They initially had some reservations about the two specially admitted students, Jia Zheyu and Jiang Yi. Now, seeing Jiang Yi, all they felt was sympathy.
Jiang Yi paid no mind to their gazes. He picked up his jacket and headed for the camp gate.
Jia Zheyu, witnessing this scene, was struggling not to laugh out loud.
A few days ago, Jiang Yi couldn't stand it anymore. Jia Zheyu kept treating him like a D-level esper, tutoring him on missed lessons and even wanting to train with him at night.
Sometimes, having a buddy who's too loyal can be a bit of a hassle.
So, Jiang Yi simply found an out-of-the-way spot with no cameras and told Jia Zheyu about his test results showing he was an S-level esper.
Now, the only ones who knew about this were Professor Bonasen, Xin Ziyu, and Jia Zheyu.
Ke Lin didn't count; he and Jiang Yi were a package deal.
Upon learning this, Jia Zheyu was so shocked his jaw nearly dropped. He grabbed Jiang Yi's shoulders and shook him vigorously. "Damn! My buddy is a once-in-a-century S-level! Why keep it a secret? If you told them, you'd be the team's golden boy!"
Jiang Yi briefly explained Professor Bonasen's concerns and added that he had no plans to stay in the military or the Esper Team.
There was no need to stand out during his military internship.
Jia Zheyu manually closed his gaping mouth. "Alright, buddy, you're something else. You can keep something like this quiet. If it were me, no matter what anyone said, I'd be like, 'Oh, you heard I'm an S-level?'"
So now, when Jia Zheyu saw the captain comforting Jiang Yi, he was holding back laughter so hard his face turned red. It was hard to imagine the expressions on the leader and other team members' faces if they ever found out Jiang Yi's true level.
After Jiang Yi returned home, a call from Hera threw a wrench in his day off plans.
A little wolf rescued from a shelter had gone missing. Hera knew Ke Lin had an exceptional sense of smell and asked if he could help find him.
Jiang Yi didn't agree immediately. Instead, he asked, "Why do you say Ke Lin's sense of smell is particularly good? Wild wolves generally have a good sense of smell, right?"
Hera had no choice but to tell the truth. "During your mission, the one who pushed you off the cliff was my subordinate, Kaiser. Some time ago, Ke Lin suddenly went to his house at night and beat him up. Of course, he deserved it, and I've reprimanded him too. But Ke Lin was able to locate Kaiser from dozens of kilometers away just by the residual scent on the wounds. That's something other wild wolves couldn't possibly do."
Jiang Yi knew Ke Lin's sense of smell was outstanding, but he hadn't realized it was this powerful.
"Ke Lin, are you willing to help them?" Jiang Yi put the call on speakerphone and asked.
Hera's voice came through the communicator. "Ke Lin, my request might involve some danger, but I still hope you'll agree. Xia Fei is a well-behaved and obedient little wolf. I'm really afraid he's been kidnapped and might be harmed."
Ke Lin was the one who rescued the little wolves from the shelter. Although he couldn't remember every fellow pack member's name, he recalled their smiling faces.
At the moment of rescue, they were so happy. No matter how you looked at it, Ke Lin didn't want them to suffer harm again.
After a moment of silence, Ke Lin said to Jiang Yi, "Boss, can you come with me?"
Jiang Yi replied without hesitation, "Of course." That had been his intention all along.
Hera took them to Xia Fei's place. Though the small bedroom was not spacious, it was evident that Xia Fei had taken good care of it—he cherished his new home dearly.
The room was filled with Xia Fei's scent.
Ke Lin stood inside for a while before telling Hera, "I've got it."
Hera had just opened the wardrobe. "So fast? Don't you need to smell his clothes?"
"No, this is sufficient."
As he spoke, Ke Lin walked out of the room. "He probably left on his own. I didn't detect anyone else's scent."
Standing downstairs in the apartment complex, Ke Lin quickly pinpointed Xia Fei's location.
The group followed Ke Lin's lead as they searched.
They finally found Xia Fei under an overpass.
The space was more than thirty feet above the ground, and the original work ladder had broken. Xia Fei was huddled inside, unable to climb down.
He had been trapped there for a full day and night, without a communicator and too afraid to call out loudly, so he could only hold his knees and cry silently.
Upon hearing Hera's voice, he happily poked out his little head, his furry wolf ears instantly perking up.
Jiang Yi looked over—what a coincidence. It was the same little wolf who had intended to take a swipe at Caston but stopped when Caston suddenly woke up.
"Deputy leader, I'm here! Save me!"
A good thirty feet was a real challenge. Without a ladder, it was difficult for anyone to climb up.
"Wait here, I'll go find a rope," Hera said, glancing around.
They had expected to follow the scent to some camp or even the Federal Military, so they were armed. But who would have thought they'd end up near a nearly deserted highway?
"I'll go up. In wolf form, I should be able to jump that high," Ke Lin suggested.
As a wolf, Ke Lin's physical abilities were greatly enhanced. Last time, he had jumped from the fourth floor of Kaiser's house without a scratch.
"That could work. Thank you," Hera said gratefully. "You didn't bring extra clothes, right? I'll step aside so you can undress before transforming."
This was also why Hera hadn't considered transforming herself.
"Ah, right." Ke Lin only remembered the clothing issue after speaking. His sense of smell had improved recently, but his mind seemed less sharp.
Fortunately, they were in a remote wilderness area with few people around.
Ke Lin quickly undressed in the shadow beneath the bridge.
With a thought, he transformed into a tall, young, and robust wild wolf.
His fur was exceptionally fluffy and smooth, and the fiery red tips of his ears and tail shimmered like burning flames in the sunlight.
He first jumped to the side, using the arch bridge for leverage, then leaped directly into the underpass where Xia Fei was.
"Come on, don't be afraid. Get on my back and hold tight," Ke Lin said.
"Yeah!" Xia Fei obediently climbed onto Ke Lin's back, her small hands gripping his fur tightly.
Ke Lin adjusted his posture and leaped down, his distinctive fur cutting a sleek arc through the air.
After completing the task, Ke Lin ran back to the shadows to change back.
Undressing and dressing outside in broad daylight was a bit embarrassing, but thankfully, his master did his best to shield him.
Of course, it would have been even better if his master's gaze hadn't been so intense.
Jiang Yi watched as his Little Wolf kept "teasing" him right before his eyes, thinking about how to continue enjoying his vacation once they got home.
But the Little Wolf had indeed put on a little weight—his little belly was noticeably rounder when he bent over to put on his clothes.
What did that mean? It meant Jiang Yi was taking good care of him.
Xia Fei wiped her tears as she recounted her experience.
There was no conspiracy or danger as imagined—it turned out to be a big mix-up.
Xia Fei's best friend's birthday was approaching, and she wanted to secretly prepare a gift for her friend. Unexpectedly, she got lost after leaving home, straying further and further until she wound up near the highway.
Suddenly, an Esper appeared, frightening her into hiding in the underpass. The Esper seemed to be carrying out a task, fighting from the bridge all the way down below and accidentally breaking the ladder.
This left Xia Fei trapped in the highest section beneath the bridge, unable to climb up or get down.
Xia Fei nodded vigorously. "Deputy Chief, I understand."
On their way back, Jiang Yi and Ke Lin still followed their original plan and went to the barbershop first.
Jiang Yi had no specific requirements for his hairstyle—just clean, neat, and not obstructing his vision—so he declined the stylish cut recommended by Tony.
Tony was quite disappointed. Although Jiang Yi's current hairstyle was fine, if he could have worked his magic and given him a fashionable look, it would have been absolutely stunning!
When it was Ke Lin's turn, he said he would leave everything to his master's discretion.
Tony thought in despair, "Don't tell me they want the same haircut."
Could these two handsome guys not waste their looks and figures? Wouldn't it be great to get a trendy hairstyle and bless the eyes of passersby on the street?
"Just give him a wolf-cut. Make the bangs a bit shorter, and leave the back hair longer. Make him look as handsome as possible," Jiang Yi said.
Although his Little Wolf was soft and adorable to him, he was actually quite fierce to others!
Upon hearing this, Tony immediately perked up. Finally, he had some room to work his magic.
As Ke Lin sat down, he looked into Tony's eyes, revealing his sharp wolf fangs. He narrowed his eyes slightly and smiled, saying, "Buddy, please do a good job cutting. Don't let any accidents happen or anything."
For some reason, Tony felt a chill run down his spine. He wiped the nonexistent sweat from his forehead and said, "Don't worry, no problem."
No wonder this guy wanted a wolf-cut. That look in his eyes just now was exactly like a wild wolf's.
After Hera and Xia Fei returned to the Wild Wolf Corps camp, Kaiser eagerly ran over.
"Chief, how did it go? Did you confirm it?"
Hera nodded.
You have to admit, bloodline power is truly formidable.
Ke Lin bears little resemblance to their Great Leader in either looks or personality, yet the aura she gets from his beast form is almost identical.
Hera said to Kaiser, "Go ahead and report to the Great Leader."
Author's note:
At the moment, Jiang Yi can't figure out why Ke Lin's put on weight.
