Chapter 22
byChapter 22
Rong Yu'an returned to the bedroom to think carefully. If he were really diagnosed with a mental illness, what would happen?
Would he be arrested by the police? Probably not—he hadn't committed a crime, and he wasn't the villain who harmed others.
Would Gu Shenhan divorce him? Even less likely—not only was there no such thing as divorce here, but even if there were, Gu Shenhan wouldn't do that. If he truly intended to do that, he wouldn't have warned him ahead of time to prepare him mentally.
So what was he afraid of? At worst, he'd lose some face, or at least, people would suspect his identity.
But he'd been here for so many days, and no one here thought he wasn't Rong Yu'an. What could suspicion do?
He had to trust Gu Shenhan, had to have faith.
Rong Yu'an took a deep breath, went to the yard for a walk to rest his eyes, came back, washed up on time, and went to sleep.
The next day was his stitch removal day, and he had to get up as early as possible. Luckily, it was Saturday, so Gu Shenhan didn't have to go to the company either. So Gu Shenhan got up early too, they ate breakfast together, packed up, and he took Rong Yu'an out.
The doctor was booked in advance. There was one patient ahead of them, so Gu Shenhan and Rong Yu'an arrived at the hospital and sat on the chairs outside the consultation room waiting.
A little kid was sitting across from them, drinking Want Want milk. Rong Yu'an watched the child.
"Want some?" Gu Shenhan thought he was eyeing the milk. "If you want some, I'll go buy you one."
"No, I don't drink that," Rong Yu'an said. "This little baby is so cute. Such big eyes."
"They're just okay." Gu Shenhan didn't think there was anything special—just a little better looking than the average kid. "Not as big as the 'little friend' next to me."
"Hmm, my eyes are pretty big. So our baby's eyes will definitely be even bigger."
"You're talking nonsense again. Where would we get a little baby?"
"Of course, I'll give birth to one, mmph mmph?" Rong Yu'an's mouth was covered, and he looked at Gu Shenhan in confusion.
"What are you babbling about?" Gu Shenhan let go and lowered his voice. "How can you, a boy, give birth?"
"Of course, if I'm with you, I can have a baby."
What am I, a fertility deity that just being with me gets you pregnant?! Gu Shenhan was at a loss.
Rong Yu'an was full of questions. He was a healthy young man—no illnesses, no pains, in good shape. In the other world, he often did activities like playing polo or practicing swordsmanship. Having a husband naturally meant having a baby.
What was so hard to understand about that?
"Anyway, no more nonsense," Gu Shenhan said seriously. "Being with me won't give you a baby, and you absolutely must never say this sentence to anyone. Got it?"
"Why?"
"It's okay that you don't know Arabic numerals, but if you say you can give birth, everyone will think you're very strange. So this is absolutely forbidden, especially if there's a need for a psychiatric evaluation. If you really say that, even I can't guarantee how things will turn out."
"But I'm being very serious." Rong Yu'an was a little aggrieved and muttered softly.
Why wouldn't these people let him tell the truth? Even if he did tell, no one believed him.
Gu Shenhan saw he was upset and rubbed his head. "You say that because there are some things you don't remember. But this statement really is problematic, so it's forbidden from now on. Alright, don't be unhappy. Once the stitches are out, I'll take you out to eat something good, or go shopping?"
Rong Yu'an wasn't interested and felt listless.
Just then, a nurse came to call them in.
When the stitches were being put in, Rong Yu'an hadn't been that scared. But now that he was about to have them removed, he was a bit nervous.
Gu Shenhan accompanied him inside. Seeing that he was afraid of the stitch removal scissors, he held his head and gently pressed it against his chest, saying to the doctor, "Please be gentle. My wife is afraid of pain."
The doctor said, "Then hold him tight. I'll be quick."
Rong Yu'an clutched Gu Shenhan's shirt, too scared to look.
He had fallen from grace. He had said he wanted to be dignified and proper, but it had only been a short while, and now he was burying himself in Gu Shenhan's arms?
But this place was like a safe haven, as if by doing this, the pain wouldn't really come... Ow!
Rong Yu'an suddenly tensed up, hissing through his teeth in pain and trembling uncontrollably.
Gu Shenhan watched as the doctor unpicked the stitch and cut it. The skin was so delicate that even he couldn't bear to look. He frowned, one hand protecting Rong Yu'an's head, the other stroking his uninjured shoulder.
It took about a few minutes. The doctor finally finished removing the stitches and disinfected the wound again. "Alright, don't shower for two days after you get home. After two days, you can take a shower, but no longer than fifteen minutes. No strenuous exercise for a week. If it itches, try not to scratch it. Come back in one week for a check-up, and we'll decide on scar removal then."
Rong Yu'an put his clothes back on; his whole body was drenched in sweat from the pain. Gu Shenhan wiped his forehead and led him to the parking lot.
On the way, Gu Shenhan spotted a young man. He was about the same age as Rong Yu'an, wearing a sleeveless jersey. On his upper arm, near the shoulder, there was a very obvious scar—the kind most young people of this age have.
It was the scar left by the BCG vaccine given at birth, their first shot. But Gu Shenhan had taken the opportunity to examine the exposed parts of Rong Yu'an's body while he undressed for stitch removal, and there was no such mark on either of his arms.
He suddenly slowed his pace. "An An, wait a second."
Rong Yu'an asked, "Oh, what's wrong, husband?"
Gu Shenhan said, "Let's go see a doctor again. I have something to ask... Actually, let's go back to the car first."
A strange idea suddenly occurred to him. Rong Yu'an's fingerprints were fine, his blood type and facial recognition were fine. But did he have antibodies from all the mandatory vaccines?
If he really didn't, then the hospital environment itself was dangerous. Gu Shenhan quickly took Rong Yu'an outside, then bought a pack of masks from a vending machine, planning to put one on Rong Yu'an if needed.
Rong Yu'an noticed other people wearing masks, but he'd never put one on before. He asked Gu Shenhan, "Husband, is wearing this to stop infectious diseases?"
"Such an old-fashioned word." Gu Shenhan said, "Sort of. It blocks bacteria and viruses. It's safer to have one on. Have you ever come across an infectious disease?"
"I haven't."
He had only heard about it. There was a close friend (like an elder brother) he knew well who worked in the Imperial Hospital and had once gone to an epidemic area to help the people. Later, when he told me about that experience, he mentioned that the first thing to do before entering the epidemic area was to cover their mouth and nose to prevent droplet spread from infected people.
"An An," Gu Shenhan asked at this moment, "had you ever been to a doctor before you fell into the sea?"
"I... I don't remember either. Husband, why are you suddenly asking this?"
"Just a casual question. Then how much do you remember from when you were little?"
"I don't have much memory of it either." After answering, Rong Yu'an looked away, not daring to meet Gu Shenhan's eyes.
Gu Shenhan clearly sensed Rong Yu'an's unease, as if he were lying. He had never picked up on any trace of Rong Yu'an having lived in this world. At first, he thought it was some kind of cognitive impairment from falling into the sea. But recently, the more familiar he became, the more he felt that something wasn't right.
No matter how much memory someone lost, they couldn't have absolutely no impression of the past. But Rong Yu'an truly had none. If that were the case, then where did his current knowledge come from?
Rong Yu'an didn't dare turn around at all, afraid that Gu Shenhan would ask something else he couldn't answer.
And just at that moment, someone suddenly called his name: "Rong Yu'an?"
Rong Yu'an turned around and found an unfamiliar woman.
The woman said, "Don't you remember me? I'm Lin Xiaotang's sister. You went to the beach with my younger brother to take traditional costume photos before. Have you forgotten?"
