Chapter 4: Charm Upgrade
byChapter 4: Charm Upgrade
"I may be poor, but I have more class than you."
Ming Yue had no intention of indulging this spoiled young miss any longer. She had seen through the facade: taking a step back might lead to a broader horizon, but retreating further only made one feel more aggrieved. The more she tolerated fools at school, the more she was targeted and suppressed in society.
Now, she would no longer bear it. Everyone was experiencing life for the first time; why should she yield to others?
"Sorry, my girlfriend can be a bit headstrong."
Her boyfriend said with an amiable tone that, under different circumstances, might have been endearing. But given the situation, it came across as insincere.
"If she's so headstrong, keep her on a leash at home. Don't let her out to bark like a dog."
"The bags are ready, Miss. We hope to see you again soon."
As the staff member hurried over with the bags, it was clear they were eager to avoid any further confrontation.
"Zhou Ge, what are you talking to this pauper for? Poverty breeds barbarism, and the poorer they are, the sharper their tongues."
The girl's face flushed red with anger, but she refused to back down.
"Well, compared to those who deserve a scolding and seek it out, I'm still a cut above. Goodbye, and I hope never to see this capricious miss again."
With that, Ming Yue left, phone in hand, not heading home but instead entering a restaurant where she ordered a rice bowl for a dozen yuan.
"Host, eating this really lowers your standards and affects the style of my Get Rich Quick System. Let's go for a feast!"
But Ming Yue continued eating her rice bowl unperturbed. Despite the sudden windfall from the system, she still felt a sense of unreality. With over six thousand yuan in her account, she didn't dare spend recklessly.
A person accustomed to thrift couldn't change overnight.
"Host, let's go shopping for clothes!"
The system suggested.
"No, with just this much money, I haven't even found a job yet!"
Ming Yue hadn't fully adjusted to her new identity as the host of the Get Rich Quick System.
"Host, if you complete the daily basic tasks, you'll earn money. We need to get cracking on the upgrade tasks too!"
The system felt embarrassed being at level zero and was keen on supervising Ming Yue's task completion.
"How do we do that?"
Ming Yue genuinely didn't know how to tackle the upgrade tasks.
"There are four main areas in the tasks, and charm is divided into external and internal charm.
External charm includes appearance, physique, styling, etc.
Internal charm encompasses confidence, self-discipline, kindness, composure, taste, knowledge, etc.
Yueyue, aim for these aspects. If money can solve the problem, it's not a real issue. Go for it!"
Ming Yue agreed with Yuan Bao's logic: using money to gain charm was indeed a worthwhile investment.
She headed to a hair salon,
"What kind of hairstyle would you like, Miss?"
This question stumped Ming Yue.
"Just a straightening treatment, please."
A drastic change might be too much for her to handle, both for herself and others.
Not wanting to skimp, Ming Yue spent a thousand yuan to have the chief stylist cut and style her hair.
Expensive services had their reasons, and she could feel the meticulousness in every strand of her hair.
Satisfied, Ming Yue gazed at her reflection in the mirror. How long had it been since she truly looked at her own face?
"You're truly beautiful, Miss. Don't hide your good looks anymore."
The chief stylist said with a touch of humor.
"Thank you!"
"The transformation after that girl's haircut was remarkable."
Even after she left, the stylists in the salon continued discussing her.
"She has natural beauty. When I washed her hair and she took off her glasses, I noticed her exquisite facial features, especially her eyes."
"A real beauty, yet she made herself look like a country bumpkin."
Feeling lighter, Ming Yue's sleek collarbone-length hair fluttered in the breeze. Her previously long bangs were neatly brushed back, revealing her fair and full forehead. Even her plain black-rimmed glasses added a touch of allure at this moment.
"Step one: changing the hairstyle increases charm by +1. Step two: change the wardrobe."
Ming Yue obediently headed to the mall.
She had never been to such an upscale clothing store before.
Although she attended university in the bustling metropolis of Yan Jing, she found it hard to assimilate into this environment. Her heart was confined within the barren confines of her own world.
"Moon, let's go into this shop; the style suits you well."
Don't underestimate the system—it has absorbed a vast amount of knowledge, so its taste is on point.
Ming Yue entered and walked to a row of display racks as directed by YuanBao.
Just as she reached out to touch the dress that YuanBao suggested she try on, she was met with ridicule.
"How can just any stray cat or dog come in here? Look at her shabby appearance—how could clothes she's touched ever be sold?"
A woman adorned with excessive jewelry, her three bracelets jingling on one arm, spoke up.
Ming Yue was truly speechless—was she cursed to encounter lunatics whenever she stepped out?
"YuanBao, can the system improve my luck?"
"It can't. Your luck might have all been used up when you met me."
YuanBao said proudly, without a hint of modesty.
The salesperson was helpless; how were they supposed to handle disputes between customers?
"I don't need your concern about whether I can afford it. Save your character for something else, since you have so little of it."
Ming Yue gestured to the staff member that she wanted to try on the dress, and the salesperson promptly took down the dress.
"Don't you hear what I'm saying? I'm going to complain about you."
Seeing that Ming Yue wasn't intimidated, she began to bully the staff members.
"Who knows if she's carrying germs? Doesn't your store have any standards?"
Ming Yue couldn't tolerate the foul-mouthed woman any longer.
"If you're so high and mighty, then get a private designer to come to your house. What makes you think you're superior for buying a few thousand yuan worth of clothes? You came in here making such a racket; is this the only place where you can find a sense of superiority?"
Without waiting for her to retaliate, Ming Yue turned and entered the fitting room.
It was a vintage, color-blocked sleeveless dress. When Ming Yue emerged after changing, everyone present held their breath.
Even the woman who had previously spewed venom had to admit that Ming Yue looked good.
Ming Yue turned to look at herself in the fitting mirror. The crisscross straps on her fair back added a touch of sexiness to the vintage style, and the colors were a refined blue contrast. The sleeveless vest design added a playful touch.
As YuanBao had said, this dress was very suitable for Ming Yue, especially now that she had short hair.
Her collarbone was accentuated by her short hairstyle and the sleeveless dress, revealing her sexy collarbone clearly. Occasionally, her hair playfully brushed past, adding to the allure.
"It's just her face that looks good."
The slightly overweight girl muttered. Ming Yue gave her a cold stare, and she instantly fell silent.
Remembering her wealth, the woman suddenly felt emboldened.
"I want that dress."
She raised her chin haughtily and pointed at Ming Yue.
"Miss, there's only one of this dress, and that lady tried it on first."
The salesperson explained gently.
"I'll pay double the price for it."
Ming Yue encountered someone with more money than brains for the first time. Had she watched too much TV? These clothing stores had fixed prices; there was no bidding, unlike an auction.
