Chapter 13: Fever Pitch
byChapter 13: Fever Pitch
The trio left the others speechless, striding away as the remaining villagers gathered to gossip.
Now, Ming Yue's family resided with Uncle Eldest in his home, as their new house was still in its foundational stages. With subsequent renovations and airing out for formaldehyde dissipation, it would require at least three more months.
"Yueyue is back!"
Ming Yue's grandparents lived with Uncle Youngest, as after their two elder sons married and established their own households, it was natural for them to form a household with their youngest son.
Of course, before Ming Yue had money, Uncle Youngest, Ming Feng, was the most well-off among the Mings.
He was the most resourceful, capitalizing on the country's favorable conditions to work outside and earn his first pot of gold. Then, he opened a hotel in the county town, which did quite well.
The hotel no longer required Uncle Youngest's constant supervision, and the elderly were accustomed to staying at home. Besides, with private cars, the round trip took only about forty to fifty minutes, making it convenient.
Thus, Uncle Youngest's family and the grandparents also resided in the village.
Ming Yue returned with numerous gifts, all of which her parents eagerly carried, not minding the weight.
She felt somewhat embarrassed to be empty-handed.
"Little Yue is back!"
Ming Jun, who had heard about Ming Yue's lottery win and subsequent ticket purchases, was surprised to find that the prize-winning household, previously just a rumor, had suddenly materialized.
In Li'ao Village, everyone shared the same surname, and tracing back through the generations, they were all relatives.
"Brother Jun"
Ming Yue greeted him with a smile. The town's introduction of enterprises had resolved employment issues for a large number of young villagers, indirectly alleviating the phenomenon of left-behind children.
Ming Jun worked at the factory in town, receiving decent treatment.
"Little Yue really won a million, what good luck."
He didn't doubt that Ming Yue was lying, but rather felt a sense of admiration and envy.
Ming Father had already warned Ming Yue to claim she won a million yuan to the public.
Ming Yue found this both amusing and exasperating. To prevent her parents from panicking and provide a plausible excuse, she fabricated a lie about winning three million yuan. Her parents, in turn, to protect her from exposing her wealth, falsely claimed to others that she had won a million yuan.
Indeed, one lie necessitated hundreds more to cover it up.
"It was merely a coincidence, just lucky this once."
Villagers nearby, overhearing their conversation, curiously approached.
For rural folk who rose with the sun and retired with the moon, leading regular lives, they lacked many forms of entertainment.
Therefore, events such as a sow giving birth to triplets, someone losing hundreds of thousands gambling, or a family having three consecutive daughters became topics of discussion during their leisure time.
When news broke that Ming Yue had won a million yuan and the Mings were building a new house, the village buzzed with excitement for a long time.
After things finally calmed down and people began to forget about the incident, the fervor was overshadowed by other interesting events.
However, with the arrival of Ming Yue, the protagonist of the lottery win, the fever pitch was reignited once again.
By the time Ming Yue arrived at Uncle Eldest's house, many villagers had already gathered.
Some came to verify the truth, others to join the commotion, and some simply wanted to see how Ming Yue looked now that she was wealthy.
Upon seeing her current appearance, they couldn't help but marvel, "Money can indeed transform a person."
Previously unremarkable and lacking presence, Ming Yue had changed, becoming radiant and captivating.
This transformation was fitting, as Ming Yue, soft and endearing in her youth, had always been beloved by the villagers. Later, she became a golden phoenix that soared out of the mountains.
"Uncle Eldest, I heard you have neck pain; this is a massage device specifically bought for you. It's said to be very comfortable."
"Grandpa and Grandma, these are clothes I bought for you."
"Auntie, this is a silk scarf I bought for you."
She pulled out gifts one by one, having already set aside presents for her own parents and younger brother separately.
Uncle Youngest's family hadn't returned yet. For Cousin Ming Zhao and her younger brother Ming Chen, she bought laptop computers, useful for their studies.
Uncle Youngest's family wasn't short of money, but since they had a desktop computer at home, they wouldn't buy laptops.
Ming Yue's family didn't even have a computer, so now that she had the means, she could purchase one for her younger brother.
Cousin Eldest Brother in Uncle Eldest's family didn't pass the university entrance exam and started working outside after finishing high school. Now, it was rumored that he had become a hotel manager, having been promoted recently.
Perhaps Ming Yue had set a good example, as Cousin Eldest Sister Ming Yun also performed well academically, enrolling in a medical university.
Since she was away at school for extended periods, Ming Yue didn't prepare a gift for her this time but instead gave her eight thousand yuan as a token of sisterly affection.
Whether she wanted to buy a computer, a phone, or something else, it was entirely up to her.
