Chapter 110: The Famous Vase?
by 清水叶子Chapter 110: The Famous Vase?
Lin Miao, carefree as ever, slept soundly without even a dream.
Upon waking, he found himself back in his own bed, with Gu Yunting already out for his morning run.
The first morning back after the holiday filled Lin Miao with an overwhelming urge to just end it all.
He wasn't so averse to studying before, but things had changed. The foul temper of his former self was really getting to him.
Lin Miao dragged himself out of bed, fumbling around before finally getting dressed. If it weren't for having to report to Xia Che today, Lin Miao would've totally skipped class.
Still, Lin Miao was pretty into this mecha science class. Even though he'd already skimmed through the old lessons, hearing it live would be a whole different experience, especially since mecha science gets updated every year.
Lin Miao finally mustered some energy, grabbed the breakfast Gu Yunting left on the table, and ate it on the go, slouching all the way.
Used to the pampered life of a wealthy young master, Lin Miao had never been this uncouth before. Now, experiencing it firsthand, he found it oddly refreshing.
He finished eating just as he reached the classroom, tossed the wrapper into the trash, and made his way to the seat next to Gu Yunting, all under the watchful eyes of his classmates.
It's kind of funny, but Gu Yunting's grades, while not always top of the class, are consistently near the top.
After all, it's a military academy, and plenty of students had a head start with private tutoring. No matter how hard Gu Yunting studies, he can't compete with the solid foundation of those from elite families.
But even with his stellar grades, not many are eager to sit next to Gu Yunting. After all, Gu Yunting, with no prior foundation, still manages to excel, which makes him stand out in this class. Often, after the teacher calls on him, they'd turn to the person sitting next to him.
Xia Che's classes are all about flaunting her expertise. Sometimes, a paper published just yesterday is already dissected and integrated into today's lesson plan. The students can't even begin to guess what to prep for, and naturally, they don't want to embarrass themselves in front of everyone.
After all, every one of Xia Che's classes is recorded! Talk about a never-ending cycle of embarrassment!
Unfortunately, with so many students auditing the class, there are hardly any seats to spare.
Gu Yunting usually gets to class early, catching up on the news or previewing the material, so latecomers who end up sitting next to him notice the textbooks already laid out on the desk.
Everyone was baffled, wondering if someone had asked Gu Yunting to save a seat, or if he'd deliberately chosen to sit next to the student who'd saved it.
When Lin Miao showed up at the classroom door, many instinctively turned their heads, and then couldn't tear their eyes away.
It's worth noting that while Lin Miao wasn't exactly a star student (before), his looks made him quite the campus celebrity, so everyone knew a thing or two about this so-called 'famous vase.'
Lin Miao was pretty well-known around campus. He'd scraped by on his own merits to get in, but once there, he started skipping classes and causing trouble. When his first-semester grades came out—barely passing—it was enough to deter a bunch of admirers who'd been drawn to his looks.
"Sss... What's he doing here? Does he think mecha science is some kind of trendy accessory?"
"Wow! Is that who I think it is? I think he looks even better than the photos on the confession wall!"
"Come on, good looks are good looks, but he probably can't even make it to the second year. Would you want someone who's repeating a grade?"
"I feel like with that face... it might not be impossible."
"Please, I beg you, eat something better!"
"Just that face alone is a national banquet, okay!"
Amid the whispers of the class, Lin Miao walked straight to Gu Yunting's side and sat down.
He wondered why he couldn't find the textbook he just got, turns out Gu Yunting had brought it over for him.
Lin Miao wanted to make some small talk but found that the breakfast was too much to his liking—even the seasoning was just right. There was nothing to criticize, only to praise.
After he settled down next to Gu Yunting, the surrounding voices grew louder.
Who would have thought this drama could be so exciting! The most famous underachieving pretty boy in their school actually had such a good relationship with Gu Yunting!
They knew Gu Yunting, whose academic performance was so stellar that jealousy was out of the question.
They also knew Lin Miao, whose good looks even appealed to the guys.
But... these two, how could they possibly get along? It felt more unbelievable than breaking through the fourth wall!
A few bold ones couldn’t wait to approach, but due to Gu Yunting’s cold demeanor, they only dared to talk to Lin Miao.
"Hey, buddy, auditors are supposed to sit behind the fifth row." The first five rows were reserved for students registered in the class, while the back rows were for those who didn’t get the course but wanted to listen.
Lin Miao, suspected of being an auditor just there to pass time, wasn’t angry and nodded to the person: "I just transferred in today, so I’ll be joining your classes from now on."
The people around heard Lin Miao’s explanation and were somewhat stunned, as if they had heard a foreign language.
Transfers in this class? No way!
But Lin Miao arrived late, and before others could inquire further, Xia Che had already arrived in the classroom, setting up her presentation and getting ready to take attendance.
The other students in the class immediately stopped chatting and started reviewing their notes.
Lin Miao, with no one to chat with and the surroundings quiet, thought it would be too obvious to whisper to Gu Yunting, so he could only close his mouth dejectedly and fiddle with his new textbook.
Others, seeing his behavior, were even more convinced that Lin Miao was just there to play, wasting a seat in class.
"Chares." The instructor at the podium began calling roll, and dozens of people in the class responded.
The roster was sorted alphabetically, but since Lin Miao was a transfer, his name was called after all names starting with Z were finished.
"Lin Miao."
"Here." Lin Miao didn’t bother raising his hand, but everyone in the class was secretly watching him, and Xia Che on the podium could easily find him through the direction of everyone’s gaze.
"Alright, since everyone is familiar, I won’t talk about class records. Today, we have a new student in our class. Make sure to check in with the class representative after class. Let’s start the lesson now."
Xia Che looked young but had been teaching for many years. She knew that the more formal the introduction, the more Lin Miao would be targeted, so she didn’t waste time and started the class directly.
The students, brimming with curiosity, quickly lost interest when they saw the research results published just yesterday enlarged on the screen.
Forget about new students, forget about transfers! They had their own problems to worry about.
The students in this class were all very self-disciplined, anticipating their professor’s style, and had already glanced over the paper last night.
But it was a groundbreaking discovery by mecha science experts—how could college students possibly grasp it so easily?
After Xia Che displayed the paper, she scanned the students below. Instantly, everyone avoided her gaze, too intimidated to meet her eyes.
The woman on the podium wore a long dress, appearing graceful and refined, but her mere presence was enough to silence the entire class.
Xia Che didn’t look around for long before her eyes locked with Lin Miao’s.
Lin Miao saw the woman on the podium give him a slight nod. Although she didn’t call his name, it was clear she wanted him to stand up and share his thoughts.
Lin Miao had just gotten back from vacation and hadn’t even glanced at the material.
He was bold enough to answer directly, "Teacher, I haven't gotten around to reading this paper yet."
Xia Che nodded and then looked at Gu Yunting beside Lin Miao.
Gu Yunting: "I haven't read it either."
The woman didn't seem upset and then turned her gaze to the student next to Gu Yunting.
Here we go!
The surrounding students groaned.
The selection process is supposed to be random, but their professor likes to pick people in order. Next time, they need to snag a seat far from Gu Yunting!
And that Lin Miao!
Without realizing it, Lin Miao was lumped in with Gu Yunting.
Fortunately, those who dare to sit next to Gu Yunting have some skills. This student was well-prepared and launched into a long explanation.
Everyone around let out a sigh of relief.
We're saved!
While listening to this student's insights, Lin Miao also looked at the paper on the big screen.
The paper was lengthy, and one screen wasn't enough. Lin Miao read most of it, pursed his lips, and frowned. He was about to look up the rest when the paper on the big screen flipped to the next page.
Lin Miao saw the woman on the podium smile at him.
She's actually quite thoughtful.
Most of the class had already read the paper, so they didn't notice this detail.
But Lin Miao took a moment to think.
Their professor is likely deeper than she seems. She's even studied psychology.
Lin Miao himself had studied psychology and could see some traces of it.
He quickly finished the paper, nodding as he understood, and was deep in thought when he caught the woman's eye again.
"Go ahead," Xia Che seemed certain that Lin Miao now had something to say and directly asked him to answer.
Even Lin Miao, seasoned as he was, felt the pressure. No wonder the students in the class were so in awe of her.
She's really something else.
Everyone wondered who Xia Che would call on next when they heard Lin Miao speak.
Lin Miao had caught some of the previous speaker's points and skillfully sidestepped the parts he didn't grasp. He corrected the poorly expressed or misunderstood parts.
The class listened to Lin Miao, their eyes widening.
Does this guy even realize who just spoke? Even Gu Yunting wouldn't dare to pick on that person's points. How dare you, a transfer student who barely passed last semester, do this!
But most of the class couldn't even understand the first speech, let alone the corrections and additions Lin Miao made.
They only knew that Taivis had the best grades in their class, sometimes even surpassing Gu Yunting. This paper was published by Taivis's own uncle. His family is a scholarly family, not only his ancestors but most of his relatives are involved in this field of research. Taivis himself had knowledge of mecha science comparable to a college student when he was in elementary school. How could Taivis possibly be wrong!
Didn’t you notice that even their teacher seemed pleased with Taivis’s explanation?
But… there really weren’t many in their class who could see through the teacher’s true thoughts, as they noticed that Xia Che had the same expression in response to Lin Miao’s answer.
This…
Everyone was confused, trying to figure out who was actually right.
Lin Miao wasn’t aware of the complex thoughts running through his classmates’ minds. Just as he was about to finish speaking, Gu Yunting suddenly interrupted and corrected him.
“The experiment conducted by Du Lefeng has some flaws. You should use…”
“No wonder,” Lin Miao thought, finally understanding why his approach felt a bit off. But he keenly sensed something unusual.
The results of Du Lefeng’s experiment were nearly regarded as a theorem at this stage. Lin Miao had studied the related content and hadn’t noticed any errors. How could Gu Yunting be so sure there was an issue with this experiment?
